In Search Of The Artist: The Influences Of Commercial Interest On An Art School - A Narrative Analysis, Michael Leonard Sette Jun 2014

In Search Of The Artist: The Influences Of Commercial Interest On An Art School - A Narrative Analysis, Michael Leonard Sette

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The current study will investigate how identities and roles of the artist converge with competing identities and roles fostered at the institutional level within an art college as revealed through the marketing literature that they produce to attract students and business partnerships. The sociological focus for this proposal is the tension between art as a creative expressive endeavor and art as a commodity that has entered into social transactions unintended by the original expression of the artist. The researcher documents and describes (via narrative analysis) how an art school negotiates competing relationships between the pressures to teach and promote art …

Between A Rock And A Hard Place: Role Dissonance In Female Non-Traditional Students, Jane E. Marsman Jun 2014

Between A Rock And A Hard Place: Role Dissonance In Female Non-Traditional Students, Jane E. Marsman

College Student Affairs Leadership

This paper reviews literature on non-traditional students, role dissonance, and the unique challenges faced by individuals who must balance the role of postsecondary student with a multiplicity of other roles. From the foundation of Erikson’s (1959/1980) identity development theory; Gilligan’s (1982/1993) theory of moral development; and other research on role identities, the author proposes a theoretical framework for examining role dissonance and its effect on the postsecondary educational experiences and persistence of female non-traditional students. A developmental task central to the academic and personal success of the female non-traditional student is her progression from a belief that she must sacrifice …

Qualitative Engagement Of Nigerian Students And Librarians In The Analysis Of Deviance In Library Utilization, Adediran D. Ikuomola, Rashidi Akanji Okunola, Samuel Olabode Fabunmi

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Research on library deviance in Nigeria has largely relied on librarians’ accounts, which often portray students as ‘deviants’ and the libraries as ‘victims’, however we focus on a holistic account which incorporates both students’ and librarians’ narratives in the analysis of deviant behaviours in library utilization. Through observations and interviews the paper highlighted some common trends of deviance and the implication on library utility in selected universities. The study reveals a gap in the security of students’ personal effects, inadequate electricity supply and a wide range of deviant behaviours associated with the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) in …

Income, Program Participation, Poverty, And Financial Vulnerability: Research And Data Needs, James P. Ziliak

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

The aim of this paper is to assess the adequacy of the data infrastructure in the United States to meet future research and policy evaluation needs as it pertains to income, program participation, poverty, and financial vulnerability. I first discuss some major research themes that are likely to dominate policy and scientific discussions in the coming decade. This list includes research on the long-term consequences of income inequality and mobility, issues of transfer-program participation and intergenerational dependence, challenges with poverty measurement and poverty persistence, and material deprivation. I then summarize what information we currently collect in the U.S. that is …

Fiduciary Discretion, D. Gordon Smith, Jordan C. Lee Jun 2014

Fiduciary Discretion, D. Gordon Smith, Jordan C. Lee

Faculty Scholarship

Discretion is an important feature of all contractual relationships. In this Article, we rely on incomplete contract theory to motivate our study of discretion, with particular attention to fiduciary relationships. We make two contributions to the substantial literature on fiduciary law. First, we describe the role of fiduciary law as “boundary enforcement,” and we urge courts to honor the appropriate exercise of discretion by fiduciaries, even when the beneficiary or the judge might perceive a preferable action after the fact. Second, we answer the question, how should a court define the boundaries of fiduciary discretion? We observe that courts often …

From Digits To Diagrams: Using Infographics To Inform Database Retention And Cancellation Decisions, Calida A. Barboza Jun 2014

From Digits To Diagrams: Using Infographics To Inform Database Retention And Cancellation Decisions, Calida A. Barboza

Charleston Library Conference

This paper describes a poster presentation about how Ithaca College librarians used an infographic displaying the relationships among databases to make retention and cancellation decisions for the 2013–2014 fiscal year. The diagram, which was created to help selectors more easily understand how canceling one database would affect subscriptions to other databases, also shows the impact of the resources’ interconnectedness on cost. A modified sample of the illustration is reproduced in this report. Design considerations and the tools used to create the image will also be discussed.

Metadata And Open Access: Reliably Finding Content And Finding Reliable Content, Sommer Browning, Jean-Claude Guédon, Laurie Kaplan Jun 2014

Metadata And Open Access: Reliably Finding Content And Finding Reliable Content, Sommer Browning, Jean-Claude Guédon, Laurie Kaplan

Charleston Library Conference

Metadata and open access publishing continue to be topics of debate and discussion in the popular media, blogs, and listservs. Different points of view exist among librarians, researchers, publishers, and others, and several examples will be presented regarding open access journals and articles and digital data from the perspective of metadata and accessibility. Open access content is the utmost accessible content, if students and researchers know how to find it and know how to judge whether what they find is worthy of inclusion in their research. The discussion will focus on how to make open access publications and articles more …

Support When It Counts: Library Roles In Public Access To Federally Funded Research, Kristine M. Alpi, William M. Cross, Hilary M. Davis

Charleston Library Conference

In November 2012, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced it would begin enforcing its April 2008 mandate of public access to NIH-funded research by delaying processing of investigators’ grants reporting noncompliant publications. In response, the North Carolina State University (NCSU) Libraries offered to assist the University’s sponsored research administration in supporting NCSU researchers who had publications stemming from NIH funding and had not achieved compliance. Since the 2008 NIH mandate, over 1,000 articles based on NIH-funding have been published by NCSU across research areas including veterinary medicine, life sciences, physical sciences, social sciences, engineering, textiles, design, math, and statistics. …

Beyond Demand Driven: Incorporating Multiple Tools In A Consortial Collection Strategy, Karen H. Wilhoit Jun 2014

Beyond Demand Driven: Incorporating Multiple Tools In A Consortial Collection Strategy, Karen H. Wilhoit

Charleston Library Conference

OhioLINK has a long history of sharing print resources among its members. When e-books began to enter the market, OhioLINK was an early adopter of the new format. However, as e-books grew in importance and OhioLINK institutions began buying them individually in large numbers, we realized that our existing methods of acquiring e-books for the consortium were not completely meeting our needs. In April 2013, OhioLINK began a pilot project with Yankee Book Peddler (YBP), ebrary, Ashgate, Rowman and Littlefield, and Cambridge University Press to purchase e-books for our members. The pilot combines automatic purchase of titles that fit two …

Four Years Of Unmediated Demand-Driven Acquisition And 5,000 E-Books Later: We Gave ‘Em What They Wanted, Karen S. Fischer, Chris Diaz

Charleston Library Conference

As one of ebrary’s largest academic library DDA customers, the program at the University of Iowa Libraries has been highly successful, though not without challenges. This presentation will present detailed findings from analyzing Iowa’s demand-driven acquisition e-book usage data from over 5,000 titles purchased over 4 years, including examining subject areas, prices, publishers, and other relevant metrics. This presentation will serve as update to a popular session at Charleston in 2010 (Give ‘Em What They Want: Patron-Driven Collection Development), where the University of Iowa Libraries presented data from a 1-year pilot program. Now, with 4 years of experience under our …

The Women’S Library Moves: Deeds Not Words, Elizabeth Chapman

Charleston Library Conference

The move of The Women's Library Collection to the Library of the London School of Economics (LSE) has been a long project with a high public profile. Building academic and financial support and withstanding public protest, the collection finally moved in summer 2013. Managing building works, staffing transfers, and more, the project reveals the riches of this UNESCO-listed collection on Women's History which, combined with LSE's existing campaigning collections, makes a rich resource for students, researchers, and the public. The paper sets out some of the lessons learned in such acquisitions and reveals some of the stories in the collection, …

Is The Library Ready For An Emerging Field? The Case Of Veterans Studies, Marc D. Brodsky, Bruce E. Pencek Jun 2014

Is The Library Ready For An Emerging Field? The Case Of Veterans Studies, Marc D. Brodsky, Bruce E. Pencek

Charleston Library Conference

How can libraries and archives prepare for emerging scholarly fields that have not yet emerged? How do we know when such a “discipline” is emerging, and how might we support it?

An archivist at Special Collections and the history/social science librarian at the Virginia Tech Libraries saw signs of research interest about veterans on their campus and elsewhere. With an interest in supporting what might be considered an emerging field, both were aware of the risks of investing in materials that do not attract users. This presentation will examine their process of evaluating those risks while assessing evidence of a …

“Lifelong Learning” In 6 Minutes And 40 Seconds, John Dove

Charleston Library Conference

In the spirit of “anything worth doing is worth doing superficially,” the author provides, in classic “PechaKucha” style, a presentation on Lifelong Learning. Tasked with describing how Credo Reference can affect the quality of teaching and learning, the author presents examples of inspiration for this topic in a “shotgun” presentation, encouraging presentation attendees to learn more about MOOCs and the opportunities they present for education, educators, libraries, and students.

Corporate Governance In Microfinance Institutions: Board Composition And The Ability To Face Institutional Voids, Subrata Chakrabarty, A. Erin Bass Jun 2014

Corporate Governance In Microfinance Institutions: Board Composition And The Ability To Face Institutional Voids, Subrata Chakrabarty, A. Erin Bass

Marketing and Management Faculty Publications

Manuscript Type: Empirical

Research Question/Issue: We utilize institutional theory to examine corporate governance in microfinance institutions (MFIs). Many MFIs operate at the bottom of the economic pyramid (BOP), which is usually agrarian, impoverished, and plagued with institutional voids. We investigate the link between the composition of the boards of MFIs and the ability of the MFIs to face institutional voids to ensure organizational viability.

Research Findings/Insights: We find that MFIs with boards that have more socio-economic expertise and female representation are better able to lower the MFI’s costs of operating at the BOP. However, this relationship weakens when the effectiveness …

How Sexism Makes The Man: Examining The Relationship Between Masculinity, Ambivalent Sexism, And Gender Stereotyping, Mariah L. Wilkerson Jun 2014

How Sexism Makes The Man: Examining The Relationship Between Masculinity, Ambivalent Sexism, And Gender Stereotyping, Mariah L. Wilkerson

Lawrence University Honors Projects

Masculinity is a precarious social status, meaning it can be lost through social and gender transgressions (Bosson & Vandello, 2011). Men often act in stereotypically masculine ways to reassert their masculinity and restore their social status after it has been threatened. The current study also examines masculinity in a new way, as a collective gender identity (e.g., Tajfel, 1982). I hypothesized that threatened men and men who identify as more masculine will display masculinity through more polarized attitudes towards traditional and nontraditional groups of men and women, endorsing traditional gender stereotypes, and intensified ambivalently sexist attitudes. Two empirical studies tested …

Material Culture: A Review Of The 2013 Oxford Symposium On Food And Cookery, Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire

Articles

The focus of this year’s Oxford Symposium on Food and Cookery was on the stew stove not the stew; the knives not the meat; the salt pots or ‘nefs’ rather than the salt; the ‘chasen’ not the tea; the plates (whether pewter, ceramic, delftware, china, silver or gold) but not their food contents. We were gathered to discuss associated material culture of food and cookery rather than the perishable ephemeral substance that usually concerns this gathering now in its thirty-first year.

So, what did the 220 chefs, food historians, writers, scientists, anthropologists and general foodies learn from the weekend’s discussion …

Lessons From Lived Experience: From Fresh Insights To Effective Action, Lisa Deangelis, Maureen A. Scully, Andrea Wight

Emerging Leaders Program Team Projects

The 34 fellows in the 2014 Emerging Leaders Program worked with community partners to generate the theme, “Learning from Lived Experience: From fresh insights to effective action." Each year, the projects draw upon a theme or lesson from the prior year. Last year and this year, fellows saw how the lived experiences of both their stakeholders and themselves generated nuanced and appropriate approaches to problem-solving. The fellows worked with six community partners, giving their time and professional skills to understand how to frame complex social challenges, engage new partners and resources, and sharpen strategic plans. They conducted surveys, interviews, open …
