How Has Interaction Design Been Perceived By Industrial Designers?, Akoglu, Ozyegin, Anna Valtonen

DRS Biennial Conference Series

In this paper, we aim to portray the emergence and growth of interaction design within the practice of industrial design and show how the practitioners of industrial design have perceived this development. To achieve this, we first show the ambitions of the early pioneers, then bring forward how interaction design becomes an optional area for the industrial design professionals and how it is adopted by industrial designers and then finally how it becomes an area on its own within industrial design based organisations. To picture these developments within the professional practice of industrial design, we use the voices of industrial …

Airport Security Screeners Expertise And Implications For Interface Design, Levi Swann, Vesna Popovic, Alethea Blackler, Ben Kraal Jun 2014

Airport Security Screeners Expertise And Implications For Interface Design, Levi Swann, Vesna Popovic, Alethea Blackler, Ben Kraal

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper describes research investigating expertise and the types of knowledge used by airport security screeners. It applies a multi method approach incorporating eye tracking, concurrent verbal protocol and interviews. Results show that novice and expert security screeners primarily access perceptual knowledge and experience little difficulty during routine situations. During non-routine situations however, experience was found to be a determining factor for effective interactions and problem solving. Experts were found to use strategic knowledge and demonstrated structured use of interface functions integrated into efficient problem solving sequences. Comparatively, novices experienced more knowledge limitations and uncertainty resulting in interaction breakdowns. These …

A Framework Of Ethical Nudges In The Design Of Consumer Goods, Anders Haug, Jacob Busch Jun 2014

A Framework Of Ethical Nudges In The Design Of Consumer Goods, Anders Haug, Jacob Busch

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper focuses on the use of nudging in the design of consumer goods. This perspective is different from most existing nudging literature, which tends to focus on nudging as a tool for policy makers. The change of focus to consumer goods has some implications in relation to existing classifications of nudging, namely that the nontransparent aspect of some types of nudges becomes less relevant. Instead this paper introduces a distinction of the nudging ability of a product as decisive or non-decisive for a purchase decision. This dimension is combined with a dimension from an existing framework to produce four …

Evolving A Design Driven ‘Hybrid’ Research Approach To Inform And Advance Sustainable Outcomes In The Built Environment Sector, Kimberley Wilson, Cheryl Desha, Evonne Miller Jun 2014

Evolving A Design Driven ‘Hybrid’ Research Approach To Inform And Advance Sustainable Outcomes In The Built Environment Sector, Kimberley Wilson, Cheryl Desha, Evonne Miller

DRS Biennial Conference Series

A significant reduction in global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is a priority, and the preservation of existing building stock presents a significant opportunity to reduce the carbon footprint of our built environment. Within this ‘wicked’ problem context, and moving beyond the ad hoc and incremental performance improvements that have been made to date, collaborative and multidisciplinary efforts are required to find rapid and transformational solutions. Design has emerged as a strategic and redirective practice, and lessons can therefore be learned about transformation and potentially applied in the built environment. The purpose of this paper is to discuss a pragmatic and …

Design Vs. The Design Industry, Joanna Boehnert Jun 2014

Design Vs. The Design Industry, Joanna Boehnert

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Sustainable design; systems; epistemology; environment crisis; capitalismDesign can be understood as a practice that evolves as new cognitive and perceptual capacities enable a greater understanding of complexity, context and system dynamics. These emergent capacities create greater potential for social and technological innovation. This paper will argue that despite emergent skills, designers are not able to effectively address contemporary problems in a sustainable manner due to the systemic priorities of the design industry. This paper theorises “design” as the professional practice of creating new products, buildings, services and communication as a broader practice than the work that is produced within the …

Service Innovation And Welfare Technology For Sustainable Home Medication: Insights From Social Practice Theory, Ida Nilstad Pettersen Jun 2014

Service Innovation And Welfare Technology For Sustainable Home Medication: Insights From Social Practice Theory, Ida Nilstad Pettersen

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Resource limitations and demographic changes constitute challenges to European healthcare services. Service innovation and welfare technologies are expected to help make services more efficient and increase the autonomy and quality of life of citizens. The field of design is expected to help understand how that may happen. Innovation activity in Norwegian municipalities is however limited. A better understanding of how to support public service innovation is needed. To understand what is to be changed and by taking home medication as its case, this paper explores how to theoretically frame the challenge. It does that by first providing an overview of …

Emerging From The Shadows: Civil War, Human Rights, And Peacebuilding Among Peasants And Indigenous Peoples In Colombia And Peru In The Late 20th And Early 21st Centuries, Charles A. Flowerday Jun 2014

Emerging From The Shadows: Civil War, Human Rights, And Peacebuilding Among Peasants And Indigenous Peoples In Colombia And Peru In The Late 20th And Early 21st Centuries, Charles A. Flowerday

Department of Anthropology: Theses and Student Research

Peacebuilding in Colombia and Peru following their late-20th and early 21st century civil wars is a challenging proposition. In this study, it becomes necessary as indigenous peoples and peasants resist domination by extractive industries and governments in their thrall. Whether they protest nonviolently or rebel in arms, they are targeted for human-rights violations, especially murder, disappearance and displacement. The armed actors, state, insurgency, paramilitaries or drug traffickers, destroy civic institutions (local or regional government) and the civil (nonprofit) sector and replace them with their own authoritarian versions. Therefore, peacebuilding has emphasized rebuilding civic institutions, civil society and local …

It was the intention of this study to enhance the knowledge base of the psychological profession. The research problem, the methodology chosen to answer the research question, and the findings …

The Accordion And The Deep Bowl Of Spaghetti: Eight Researchers' Experiences Of Using Ipa As A Methodology, Chris Wagstaff, Hyeseung Jeong, Maeve Nolan, Tony Wilson, Julie Tweedlie, Elly Phillips, Halia Senu, Fiona Holland Jun 2014

The Accordion And The Deep Bowl Of Spaghetti: Eight Researchers' Experiences Of Using Ipa As A Methodology, Chris Wagstaff, Hyeseung Jeong, Maeve Nolan, Tony Wilson, Julie Tweedlie, Elly Phillips, Halia Senu, Fiona Holland

The Qualitative Report

Since 1996 Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) has grown rapidly and been applied in areas outside its initial “home” of health psychology. However, explorations of its application from a researcher's perspective are scarce. This paper provides reflections on the experiences of eight individual researchers using IPA in diverse disciplinary fields and cultures. The research studies were conducted in the USA, Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and the UK by researchers with backgrounds in business management, consumer behaviour, mental health nursing, nurse education, applied linguistics, clinical psychology, health and education. They variously explored media awareness, employee commitment, disengagement from mental health services, …

Teaching And Learning Qualitative Research ≈ Conducting Qualitative Research, Orit Hazzan, Liora Nutov

The Qualitative Report

This paper presents a teaching framework for a graduate course on Qualitative Research Methods course. The organizing concept of the teaching framework is that teaching and learning qualitative research are similar in essence to conducting qualitative research. The teaching framework is based on ten principles of teaching and learning qualitative research methods that result from the application of ten principles of conducting qualitative research. In other words, teaching and learning a course that deals with qualitative research implements the principles of such research. The teaching framework was constructed during a reflective research that lasted four years. During the course of …

Sabato Rodia's Towers In Watts: Art, Migrations, Development (Appendices B-D), Luisa Del Giudice

Sociology

The extraordinary Watts Towers were created over the course of three decades by a determined, single-minded artist, Sabato Rodia, a highly remarkable Italian immigrant laborer who wanted to do “something big.” Now a National Historic Landmark and internationally renowned destination, the Watts Towers in Los Angeles are both a personal artistic expression and a collective symbol of Nuestro Pueblo—Our Town/Our People. Featuring fresh and innovative examinations that mine deeper and broader than ever before, Sabato Rodia’s Towers in Watts is a much anticipated revisitation of the man and his towers.

In 1919, Sabato Rodia purchased a triangular plot of land …

Teaching To The Test: A Pragmatic Approach To Teaching Logic, Seth C. Vannatta Jun 2014

Teaching To The Test: A Pragmatic Approach To Teaching Logic, Seth C. Vannatta

Education and Culture

The proper goal of an introductory logic course, teaching critical thinking, is best achieved by maintaining the principle of continuity between student experiences and the curriculum. To demonstrate this I explain Dewey’s naturalistic approach to logic and the process of inquiry, one which presents the elements of traditional logic in the context of student experiences. I offer an example of a logic textbook which models the maintenance of the principle of continuity I advocate. Last, I advocate a pluralistic and experimental approach to accomplish this, including methods that rely on the role of the body in learning and reasoning.

2013 Dewey Lecture: College—What Is It Good For?, David F. Labaree Jun 2014

2013 Dewey Lecture: College—What Is It Good For?, David F. Labaree

Education and Culture

In this 2013 John Dewey Society Lecture I examine the history and the structure of the American system of higher education. I argue that the true hero of the story is the evolved form of the American university and that all the things we love about it, like free speech, are the side effects of a structure that arose for other purposes. I tell this story in three parts. First I explore how the American system of higher education emerged in the nineteenth century, without a plan and without any apparent promise that it would turn out well. Then I …

Organizational Leaders’ And Staff Members’ Appraisals Of Their Work Environment Within A Children’S Social Service System, David A. Patterson Silver Wolf (Adelv Unegv Waya) Phd, Catherine N. Dulmus Phd, Eugene Maguin Phd, John Keesler, Byron James Powell Jun 2014

Organizational Leaders’ And Staff Members’ Appraisals Of Their Work Environment Within A Children’S Social Service System, David A. Patterson Silver Wolf (Adelv Unegv Waya) Phd, Catherine N. Dulmus Phd, Eugene Maguin Phd, John Keesler, Byron James Powell

Brown School Faculty Publications

Several studies have demonstrated the effect of an organization’s culture and climate on the delivery of services to clients and the success of clinical outcomes. Workers’ perceptions are integral components of organizational social context, and in order to create a positive organizational culture and climate, managers and frontline staff need to have a shared understanding of the social context. The existing literature does not adequately address that discrepancies in perceptions of culture and climate between frontline staff and managers impact the implementation of policies and services. The purpose of this study is to compare the workgroup-level culture and climate of …

Examining The Role Of Religion In Education And The Effect On Internal Conflict, Christopher Dewayne Harris Jun 2014

Examining The Role Of Religion In Education And The Effect On Internal Conflict, Christopher Dewayne Harris

Student Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the role of religion in education in an attempt to determine whether it has a pacifying or exacerbating effect on internal conflict. Using data from the Religion and State (RAS) project as well as the International Country Risk Guide, several hypotheses regarding the effect of religious education are tested to examine the relationship between religious education and religious and ethnic tensions and resulting incidences of conflict. Employing cross-sectional times-series analysis, I find that an vigilant emphasis on religious education, particularly in the developing world, has a pacifying effect on ethno-religious violence, even when ethno-religious tensions persist. Lastly, …
