Marta (Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transportation Authority) And Me: A Tale Of Regional Engagement, Tamra Ortgies-Young, Jonathan Harris

PRISM: A Journal of Regional Engagement

In a world of exponentially changing and disparate economic realities, college professors strive to create course projects that help inspire and transform student-learners into informed and active citizens who are prepared for the global workplace, and who have a growing awareness of how various issues impact their region. This paper scrutinizes the design, process, and outcomes of a student media project and refl ects upon the best practices for encouraging media literacy and student engagement with course projects in higher education. This article focuses on student media projects created by a global issues course at a two-year college. The project …

Using Experiential And Collaborative Methods With Undergraduates And Older Persons As Part Of An Introduction To Gerontology Course, Amy Ramsey, A. Nancy Mendoza, Joyce Weil

PRISM: A Journal of Regional Engagement

This study examines an Introduction to Gerontology course for undergraduate students that integrates experiential and collaborative learning experiences as part of a general course requirement. Experiential learning encourages students to go outside of the classroom and learn about aging from an older person in a field setting. The collaborative group approach is designed to have peers work together in the course. This study used qualitative methods to examine undergraduates’ learning experiences as a result of participation in a multiple-interview and groupwork-based project through their enrollment in the Introduction to Gerontology course. Content analysis was used to analyze multiple sources of …

Masculine Status, Sexual Performance, And The Sexual Stigmatization Of Women, Brian N. Sweeney Jul 2014

Masculine Status, Sexual Performance, And The Sexual Stigmatization Of Women, Brian N. Sweeney

Faculty of Sociology/Anthropology Publications

Collegiate hookup culture advances ideas of masculinity but contradicts notions of appropriate feminine sexuality. Drawing on focus group and interview data with college students, I examine how a group of class- and race-privileged fraternity men face dilemmas as they enact a group constructed masculinity focused on sexual performance and the objectification of women. I employ a symbolic interactionist framework to illustrate how men, attentive to peer status yet anxious about the sexual stigmatization of women, draw on cultural ideas about appropriate feminine sexuality as they account for their approaches to sex and women (both with whom they interact sexually and …

Growing Up Beside You: A Relational Sociology Of Early Childhood, Nr Gabriel Jul 2014

Growing Up Beside You: A Relational Sociology Of Early Childhood, Nr Gabriel

Plymouth Institute of Education

This article will begin by outlining influential attempts by historians and sociologists to develop a more adequate theoretical understanding of past and contemporary childhoods, focusing on the major problems that stem from the pivotal role that ‘developmentalism’ plays in their arguments. I will argue that sociologists can overcome some of their deepest fears about the role of developmental psychology by developing a relational approach that integrates the biological and social aspects of children’s development. In the development of a relational sociology of early childhood we need to make important connections with closely related disciplines, but at the same time draw …

Problematic Eating Behaviors Among College Women: Suggesting A Subgroup, Danielle Genovese Jul 2014

Problematic Eating Behaviors Among College Women: Suggesting A Subgroup, Danielle Genovese

Theses and Dissertations

Problematic eating behaviors and attitudes are a major problem for men and especially women across the country. A particularly vulnerable group of women to eating disorders and skewed perception of their bodies are college women with 86% of women reporting onset of their eating disorder by the age of twenty (ANAD, 2000). Previous research suggests that women in sororities report higher insistences and experiences with eating behaviors and attitudes associated with eating disorders. The current study hypothesized that sorority women will have higher reported levels of problematic eating behaviors and attitudes associated with eating disorders than non-sorority women. The participants …

Building Social Change Through Interactive Webcomics, Sarah Shelton Jul 2014

Building Social Change Through Interactive Webcomics, Sarah Shelton

Research Papers

Comic books are a popular form of creative storytelling. Through sequential juxtaposed panels, comics have the unique ability to interact with the reader through time and space. The context within comics is the constrained amount of panels a typical comic book page allows, and the space that exists between the panels encourages the reader to manipulate meaning. Through this unique process of interaction between the narrative and the reader, comics have proven to be a creative medium to promote meanings of social change. Throughout history, comics have utilized their entertaining guise to mask underlying themes of social injustices and political …

Police Officer Job Satisfaction And Officer-Sergeant Educational Levels: A Relational Demography Perspective, Sung Uook Lee Jul 2014

Police Officer Job Satisfaction And Officer-Sergeant Educational Levels: A Relational Demography Perspective, Sung Uook Lee

Theses and Dissertations

One immediate component of officers' work environment that has the potential to have a significant influence on officers' job satisfaction is front-line supervision. Frontline supervisors have been found to impact officers' attitudes in general (Engel, 2000). Additionally, Van Maanen (1983) found that supervisors may impact officers by rewards or punishment. Although it has been researched that supervisors impact officers' attitudes or behavior (Terrill, 2001; Davis & Mateu-Gelabert, 1999), Walker (2007) concluded that there is still little research on the impact of supervisors on officer job satisfaction. As aforementioned in this thesis, police officers' job satisfaction has largely been studied in …

Deconstructing Pre-Service Teachers’ Field Experience Narratives: The Role Of Epistemological Beliefs, Rebecca B. Bays, Carol Ashong, Teresa E. Ward Phd, Nannette E. Commander Jul 2014

Deconstructing Pre-Service Teachers’ Field Experience Narratives: The Role Of Epistemological Beliefs, Rebecca B. Bays, Carol Ashong, Teresa E. Ward Phd, Nannette E. Commander

i.e.: inquiry in education

Teacher development programs incorporate field experiences for pre-service teachers (PTs) to gain first hand teaching experiences. The purpose of this study is to examine PTs’ perceptions of field experiences, and more specifically, to investigate whether these perceptions relate to PTs epistemological beliefs. A sample of 115 undergraduate educational psychology students completed the Epistemological Beliefs Inventory (EBI) and a Field Experience Questionnaire. Results indicated that PTs’ beliefs about teaching and learning influenced their perception of teaching. Students holding more sophisticated epistemological beliefs, as measured by the EBI, reported more positive perceptions of field experiences, while students holding more naïve epistemological beliefs …

"No Goin' Back": Modernity And The Film Western, Julie Anne Kohler Jul 2014

"No Goin' Back": Modernity And The Film Western, Julie Anne Kohler

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is inspired by an ending—that of a cowboy hero riding away, back turned, into the setting sun. That image, possibly the most evocative and most repeated in the Western, signifies both continuing adventure and ever westward motion as well as a restless lack of final resolution. This thesis examines the ambiguous endings and the conditions leading up to them in two film Westerns of the 1950s, George Steven's Shane (1953) and John Ford's The Searchers (1956). Fascinatingly, the tension and uncertainty conveyed throughout these films is also characteristic of life in modernity, a connection which has previously gone …

A Thematic Plan To Promote College And Career Aspirations For Low Socioeconomic Status Students, Althea Kelsey-Chism Jul 2014

A Thematic Plan To Promote College And Career Aspirations For Low Socioeconomic Status Students, Althea Kelsey-Chism

Theses and Dissertations

Research has suggested higher education is the most prominent way to ensure mobility from one socioeconomic status to another (Siff, 2006). Just as important is the development of the educational aspirations of low socioeconomic status (SES) students; this is called the predisposition stage (Brown v. the Board of Education, 1954; Perna & Swail, 2001; Walpole, 2003; Wilt, 2006). While much has been written on the subject of higher education of low SES student, Hossler and Gallagher (1987) discuss a three-phase college choice model that precludes the higher education of low SES students. The predisposition stage, as the first stage is …

Issue 07: The Need For Local Reintegration Policy/Programs In Rural Mexico, Meredith Giel Jul 2014

Issue 07: The Need For Local Reintegration Policy/Programs In Rural Mexico, Meredith Giel

International Migration Research Centre

Since 2007, a growing number of Mexican immigrants in the United States have been returning to Mexico. For the first time since the 1960s, net migration in Mexico is zero, implying that just as many Mexicans are returning to Mexico as are going to the United States. There are a number of factors contributing to this return migration by Mexican nationals. This current situation presents the Mexican government with new priorities and responsibilities. Upon return, many of these unskilled workers face barriers preventing proper reintegration back into Mexican society, including a lack of support networks, potential language and cultural barriers …

You've Gotta Read This: Summer Reading At Musselman Library (2014), Musselman Library

You’ve Gotta Read This: Summer Reading at Musselman Library

Each year Musselman Library asks Gettysburg College faculty, staff, and administrators to help create a suggested summer reading list to inspire students and the rest of the campus community to take time in the summer to sit back, relax, and read.

In addition to a plethora of fiction, non-fiction, and film picks, this year's edition includes the following special sections:

  • Nordic Noir (recommendations by Sunni DeNicola)
  • Great Reads from Guelzo (history recommendations by Dr. Allen Guelzo)
  • Isherwood's Insights into World War I (by Dr. Ian Isherwood)
  • Udden's Outtakes (Dr. Jim Udden's film and TV recommendations)

Individualized Health Care: The Utilization Of Individual Design In Traditional Medicine In Madagascar, Simone R. Jacobs Jul 2014

Individualized Health Care: The Utilization Of Individual Design In Traditional Medicine In Madagascar, Simone R. Jacobs

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This project explores the application of individual design to the treatment of patients within the traditional medical system in Madagascar. I hypothesize that traditional medicine has remained prevalent in Madagascar alongside the allopathic system because of its predisposition to human centered, or individual design. Individual design is an increasingly popular approach to designing new technology with the total consumer experience in mind. Instead of focusing solely on functionality, this approach attempts to also address how the consumer experiences a technology physically, emotionally, and socially. When applied to health care, individual design addresses all aspects of how individuals experience illness and …

Transnational Companies And Radical Transformation Processes: A Study Of Performance In Comparison To Other Multinational Companies, Jorge Alejandro Palacios Jul 2014

Transnational Companies And Radical Transformation Processes: A Study Of Performance In Comparison To Other Multinational Companies, Jorge Alejandro Palacios

HCBE Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this study was to answer the following question: Do organizations that were defined as having successfully adopted the transnational model, as per Bartlett and Ghoshal (1989), and labeled as transnational companies (TNC), perform significantly better than other multinational companies (MNC) when going through radical transformation processes?

This research question was answered through a mixed method research design. The first part used a quantitative research approach and evaluated the financial performance of TNCs selected from the Bartlett and Ghoshal (1989) research, using secondary data sources from 6 TNCs and 20 MNCs. The second part used a qualitative approach …

Rethinking Utopianism, International Relations Theory, And Marginalization Of Africa In Global Politics, Kwame B. Antwi-Boasiako Jul 2014

Rethinking Utopianism, International Relations Theory, And Marginalization Of Africa In Global Politics, Kwame B. Antwi-Boasiako

Faculty Publications

Many studies on utopianism tend to critique known political models such as capitalism, democracy, socialism, and dictatorship. While none of these models provide a perfect political environment, utopianism seems to be the answer to prevent all political abuses. From public administration point of view, the harmonious co-existence of all political models without any interference may help to conceptualise a potential change in our current hostile global political environment and limit the marginalisation of other societies as presented in the international relations literature. Modernisation theories, debatably, have assumed that the principles of modern political administration will become more important than other …

Hybridity And Dynamics Of An Individual’S Learning Styles, Quintana Marie Clark Jul 2014

Hybridity And Dynamics Of An Individual’S Learning Styles, Quintana Marie Clark

Open Access Theses

Based on Kolb Learning Style Inventory 4.0, the objectives of this research were to demonstrate the existence of hybrid learning styles and demonstrate the existence of dynamic learning styles between subject matters (mathematics and English). Understanding an individual's dynamic distribution of learning styles might be used to further improve the quality of instruction, learning, and educational materials. Optimizing the quality of instruction, learning, and educational materials is important because careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields are increasingly needed. Personalized learning has been identified as an area that could improve the quality of STEM education. Exploiting individuals learning …
