The purpose of this study was to determine the difference between Nebraska administrators’ and Nebraska secondary English teachers’ perceptions of the teacher evaluation. Capitalism, Socialism, And Biblical Ethics, Clive Beed, Cara Beed Oct 2014

Capitalism, Socialism, And Biblical Ethics, Clive Beed, Cara Beed

Journal of Religion and Business Ethics

Capitalism versus socialism has raised its head again in biblical ethics. Debate has re-ignited among Christians on whether capitalism is compatible with Christianity. In the US, a majority view is that held by conservative evangelicals who are ready to maintain capitalism as it is. Conversely, a minority position is put by the Radical Orthodoxy School, more inclined to socialism. Other positions also exist, for example, that neither capitalism nor socialism is compatible with Christianity. This paper tries to pick its way through these contentions, emphasizing the arguments of contemporary Christian supporters of capitalism. It focuses on three Christian qualities the …

Grit And Academic Performance: Is Being Grittier Better?, Winnie Chang

Open Access Dissertations

Completing a college degree benefits both the individual and society and as data show, students are starting college, but not persisting through graduation. The purpose of this study was to examine the importance of a non-cognitive trait, grit, in predicting first year academic performance, as academic performance has been found to be the best indicator of students persisting through graduation. The secondary data obtained from the first year students at a private highly selective institution was analyzed using Hierarchical Multiple Regression analysis. The results of the study showed that gender, SAT scores, race, and the perseverance subscale score of grit …

At its best, a university is a collection of individuals ‐‐ students and faculty ‐‐ focused on learning and discovering new knowledge. For this goal to be realized, a critical element is having faculty members deeply engaged in such discovery within their disciplines. Scholarship, in the form of journal articles, book chapters, monographs and similar endeavors, creative activity which can take an even wider range of forms, and funded research which explores the boundaries of disciplines all contribute to such engagement. Through such participation, faculty members stay at the growing edges of their fields, and in so doing, they enrich …

An Investigation Of Methodologies For Determining Walkability And Its Association With Socio-Demographics: An Application To The Tampa - St. Petersburg Urbanized Area, Oana A. Mckinney Oct 2014

An Investigation Of Methodologies For Determining Walkability And Its Association With Socio-Demographics: An Application To The Tampa - St. Petersburg Urbanized Area, Oana A. Mckinney

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Walkability research has broadened in the past few years, being performed by researchers in different fields such as urban planning, public health, and transportation planning. Definitions of walkability and methods of operationalizing the concept vary widely. Since the results of studies that incorporate walkability may well have policy implications, it is important to consider the potential impacts of different definitions and methods of measurement.

This thesis investigates to what extent walkability indices may differ when either the composition of the indices is changed or when different quantitative methods of standardization are used to summarize their component measures. The association of …

Schism As Collective Disaffiliation: A Quaker Typology, Pink Dandelion

Quaker Studies

This research note builds on a study of British Quakers who have resigned their Membership in the last five years (Dandelion 2002). Quakers leave either because they are 'de-convinced' or because, in a group which places emphasis on continuing revelation, they are grieving the loss of what has passed before. A third type resigns because they feel the group is too slow to support new revelation. In these latter two cases, the disaffiliated feel left by the group. This typology is placed across the concept of the 'double-culture' to give six types of ex-Quaker. It is suggested that this extended …

Incontinentia, Licentia Et Libido: The Juxtaposition Of Morality And Sexuality During The Roman Republic, Robert Sharp Oct 2014

Incontinentia, Licentia Et Libido: The Juxtaposition Of Morality And Sexuality During The Roman Republic, Robert Sharp

James Madison Undergraduate Research Journal (JMURJ)

Sex and sexuality are important elements of the human experience but are surrounded by various taboos. Roman sexuality has traditionally been viewed in a modern context as being licentious and obscene in nature, and seemingly incongruous with the elements of propriety that are expected in an honor-shame culture. What would be considered to be moral, immoral, or obscene in a modern context would not apply to the Romans as we would understand it in a modern context. This paper examines Roman sexuality during the Republic period (509 - 27 BCE) and how they can seemingly exist alongside what can be …

Reassessing The Effects Of Unemployment Insurance Generosity On Search Intensity: New Evidence From Earnings Histories, Lewis Warren Oct 2014

Reassessing The Effects Of Unemployment Insurance Generosity On Search Intensity: New Evidence From Earnings Histories, Lewis Warren

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

This paper provides the first nationally representative estimates of how unemployment insurance (UI) generosity in the United States affects the search intensity of unemployed individuals using individual level variation in UI generosity. The paper expands the current literature through fully simulating monetary eligibility and entitlement to unemployment insurance at the individual level where past studies have been unable to examine monetary eligibility and have relied on state variations in the maximum weekly benefit amount which can differ significantly from an individual’s actual benefit amount. To simulate monetary eligibility and entitlement, work histories of unemployed respondents were obtained through fully matching …

Restraint And Seclusion Of Students With A Disability Continue To Be Common In Some School Districts Patterns Remain Relatively Consistent Despite Recent Policy Changes, Douglas J. Gagnon, Marybeth J. Mattingly, Vincent J. Connelly Oct 2014

Restraint And Seclusion Of Students With A Disability Continue To Be Common In Some School Districts Patterns Remain Relatively Consistent Despite Recent Policy Changes, Douglas J. Gagnon, Marybeth J. Mattingly, Vincent J. Connelly

Carsey Publications

In 2013, Carsey released a brief that analyzed rates of restraint and seclusion using a large, nationally representative data set of U.S. school districts. This brief, which analyzes a more comprehensive data set and the most current Civil Rights Data Collection, serves as a follow-up to the previous brief. Authors Douglas Gagnon, Marybeth Mattingly, and Vincent Connelly report that, despite numerous states with revised policies related to seclusion and restraint in schools between 2009 and 2012, trends in the rates of restraint and seclusion of students with a disability in the United States remained relatively consistent between survey years. Low-poverty, …

In Defense Of The Ivory Tower: Why Philosophers Should Stay Out Of Politics, Bas Van Der Vossen Oct 2014

In Defense Of The Ivory Tower: Why Philosophers Should Stay Out Of Politics, Bas Van Der Vossen

Philosophy Faculty Articles and Research

Many political theorists, philosophers, social scientists, and other academics engage in political activism. And many think this is how things ought to be. In this essay, I challenge the ideal of the politically engaged academic. I argue that, quite to the contrary, political theorists, philosophers, and other political thinkers have a prima facie duty to refrain from political activism. This argument is based on a commonsense moral principle, a claim about the point of political thought, and findings in cognitive psychology.
