Book Review: College Sports And Institutional Values In Competition: Leadership Challenges, Kirsten Hextrum
Book Review: College Sports And Institutional Values In Competition: Leadership Challenges, Kirsten Hextrum
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
In The Price: What It Takes to Win in College Football's Era of Chaos Armen Keteyian and John Talty have written the first comprehensive post-NIL examination of college football’s new landscape for coaches, athletes, agents, and athletic departments. The authors explore the newly disrupted landscape of college football, likening it to the "Wild West" where traditional structures have been upended. The authors detail the profound impact of recent upheavals, including the COVID-19 pandemic, the transfer portal, and name, image, and likeness (NIL), which have collectively struck the sport like a nuclear bomb, leaving coaches and administrators grappling with unprecedented challenges. …

The Farm Worker: His Need For Legislation, Susan Calkins
The Farm Worker: His Need For Legislation, Susan Calkins
Maine Law Review
Of America's ignored and invisible people, the farm worker is one of the most ignored and least visible. He is hidden by the crops as he works his way down the endless rows. Far from the cities where the laws are made and the issues of the day are debated, his voice is not heard. He is vitally necessary to this well-fed nation, and yet his needs are seldom considered. The legislators have not ignored the industrial worker. They have provided him with laws insuring a minimum wage, workmen's compensation and other such benefits. The farm worker, however, is expressly …
Bankruptcy Courts In Transition Toward Debtor Rehabilitation, Conrad K. Cyr
Bankruptcy Courts In Transition Toward Debtor Rehabilitation, Conrad K. Cyr
Maine Law Review
This article attempts primarily to cope with the so-called debtor relief provisions of the Bankruptcy Act rather than with its ordinary or straight bankruptcy provisions. The different emphasis upon liquidation in ordinary bankruptcy and rehabilitation in debtor relief proceedings justifies their separate treatment. It must be cautioned, however, that not only the philosophy but many of the administrative and procedural precepts of chapters I-VII of the Bankruptcy Act are incorporated, either by word or implication, into the debtor relief chapters. Moreover, most types of cases filed under the Bankruptcy Act are administered by the same personnel in the same court …
Greenlining: A Policy Response To Environmental Racism, Adynn L. Kitchin
Greenlining: A Policy Response To Environmental Racism, Adynn L. Kitchin
Thinking Matters Symposium
Redlining describes the deliberate actions made in the 1930s by the U.S. Government’s Home Owners’ Loan Corporation(HOLC), in which the race of a neighborhood’s residents was used to measure its degree of desirability. This information was produced through maps, which consequently denied these individuals’ access to mortgages and other financial services. Although redlining was outlawed by the 1968 Fair Housing Act and the 1974 Equal Credit Opportunity Act, the legacy still lingers today. The United States’ Department of Justice launched the Combating Redlining Initiative in 2021, which has since received $107 million in settlements for neighborhoods of color across the …
The Dynamics Of Human Society Evolution: An Energetics Approach, Ram Chandra Poudel, Jon G. Mcgowan
The Dynamics Of Human Society Evolution: An Energetics Approach, Ram Chandra Poudel, Jon G. Mcgowan
Seatific Journal
Human society is an open system that evolves by coupling with various known and unknown (energy) fluxes. How do these dynamics unfold precisely? Energetics may provide further insights. We expand on Navier-Stokes’ approach to study non-equilibrium dynamics in a field that evolves over time. Based on social fi eld th eory, an induction of th e cl assical fie ld theories, we define social force, social energy, and the Hamiltonian of an individual in society. The equations for the evolution of an individual and society are sketched out based on the time-dependent Hamiltonian that includes power dynamics. We demonstrate in …

Pathways To Physical Education Teacher Education: Understanding Pete Faculty Careers And Lives, Alexander Eugene Kurtzman
Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs
Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) faculty play a critical role in shaping the future of physical education through teaching, research, and service. However, their career trajectories and professional experiences remain underexamined in the PETE literature. This dissertation combines two studies, one is a mixed-methods study and the second is a qualitative study which explore the complex pathways and socialization processes of PETE faculty. Study 1 investigated PETE faculty members’ perceptions of how prior K–12 physical education teaching experience influences their work in higher education. Drawing on Occupational Socialization Theory (OST) and the Faculty Role Socialization Model (FRSM), data from 53 …

A Clinical Review Of Suicide Risks In Dermatology, Rahib K. Islam, Victoria T. Tong, Shari R. Lipner
A Clinical Review Of Suicide Risks In Dermatology, Rahib K. Islam, Victoria T. Tong, Shari R. Lipner
School of Medicine Faculty Publications
Patients with visible skin diseases, including acne, psoriasis, and atopic dermatitis, face heightened risks of psychological distress, depression, and suicidal ideation, often exacerbated by social stigma and reduced quality of life. This review explores the intersection between dermatology and suicide, highlighting the psychosocial impact of visible skin conditions and the controversies surrounding treatment-related risks, including isotretinoin and biologic exposure. Current evidence suggests that while isotretinoin has been historically linked to mood changes, robust studies do not support a direct association with suicide. Incorporating mental health screenings into dermatological practice is essential for early identification and management of at-risk patients. By …

Gender Employment Gap Within Professional Sports Team Front Offices, Reilly E. Fitzpatrick
Honors Theses
This research paper analyzes the causes of the gender employment gap, or the underrepresentation of women, within professional sports team front offices. The research question, What are the effects on female employees working in the sports industry with the prevalent difference in the number of women employed, analyzes the female experience in the industry. To answer this question, a group of female employees were surveyed on their experiences in the industry. An emphasis was placed on if a woman had at least one negative experience in the industry and also if that negative experience led them to have a decline …
“Let Me Be A Bridge”: Language Brokering Among Emerging Adult Latina Professionals In The Midwest, Elise M. Dubord
“Let Me Be A Bridge”: Language Brokering Among Emerging Adult Latina Professionals In The Midwest, Elise M. Dubord
Faculty Publications
In immigrant families, bilingual children and adolescents regularly act as translators and interpreters for family and community members who are not fluent in the dominant language. These childhood language brokers later shift the focus of their translation activities as they transition into adulthood and develop professional skills. This research explores narratives of language brokering trajectories of three bilingual Latinas who were emerging adult professionals in three cities in Iowa. Based on a series of interviews collected over a 15 month period, this analysis examines how participants described realigning their family language responsibilities while simultaneously transferring their language brokering skills to …

BACKGROUND: Social network data are essential and informative for public health research and implementation as they provide details on individuals and their social context. For example, health information and behaviors, such as HIV-related prevention and care, may disseminate within a network or across society. By harmonizing egocentric and digital networks, researchers may construct a sociocentric-like "fuzzy" network based on a subgroup of the population.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to generate a more complete sociocentric-like "fuzzy" network by harmonizing alternative sources of egocentric and digital network data to examine relationships between participants in the Neighborhoods and Networks (N2) cohort study. Further, we …
Doctors Playing Lawyers: Lessons For Professional Regulation In Crisis, Rebecca H. Allensworth
Doctors Playing Lawyers: Lessons For Professional Regulation In Crisis, Rebecca H. Allensworth
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
When someone gets in legal trouble in America, their case is almost invariably decided by a lawyer (a judge), lay people (a jury), or a combination of the two. Professional discipline, however, is a giant unexplained exception. In professional discipline matters, accusations of dangerous or incompetent practice are decided, usually in the first instance but always in the last, by state licensing boards composed of other members of the accused’s profession. These licensing boards wield immense power as labor regulatory institutions, covering ten times as many American workers as the minimum wage and more workers than private and public sector …

Background: Hispanic/Latino individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS) face greater disease burden and comorbidity due to limited healthcare access, underrepresentation in research, and social determinants of health (SDOH). Exercise training could manage health outcomes, but existing intervention research lacks Hispanic/Latino representation.
Methods: We propose a feasibility and efficacy study of a theory-based, remotely delivered exercise training intervention for enhancing health outcomes in Hispanics/Latinos with MS. This study involves a randomized controlled trial (RCT) design and compares an MS-specific exercise training program with an active control condition over a 4-month period in a sample of 50 individuals who self-identified as Hispanic/Latino with …
African American Men’S Perception Of Fear Of A Deadly Encounter With Police During Traffic Stops In Detroit, Delshawn King
African American Men’S Perception Of Fear Of A Deadly Encounter With Police During Traffic Stops In Detroit, Delshawn King
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This qualitative, phenomenological study is an examination of the fear of deadly encounters during traffic stops as experienced by seven African American men in Detroit. This fear is rooted in the historical context of slavery, where laws permitted the use of force to control African Americans. Using the critical race theory framework, the impact of traffic stops on African American men was explored, including how these encounters contribute to fear, psychological distress, and potential escalation of violence in interactions with law enforcement. The study shows that the fear of police encounters significantly impacts the psychological well-being, trust, and security of …

Investigating The Association Between Metabolically Healthy And Metabolically Unhealthy Obesity With Disease, Colleen Marie Cohick
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Obesity is a global health concern, affecting individuals of all ages and ethnicities worldwide. A key factor in health concerns related to obesity is metabolic health: Obese individuals are either metabolically healthy obese or metabolically unhealthy obese, leading to different degrees of risk for cardiovascular disease and diabetes.. There is a lack of comprehensive research examining the association between metabolic health status among obese individuals and kidney, liver, and stomach diseases. This quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted to examine whether metabolic health status is a significant predictor of kidney, liver, and stomach diseases among obese individuals when lifestyle is a …
Exposing Lived Experiences: Eudora Welty's Intersectional Approach To Writing And Photography, Caroline Mccutchen
Exposing Lived Experiences: Eudora Welty's Intersectional Approach To Writing And Photography, Caroline Mccutchen
Honors Theses
This thesis examines how Eudora Welty employs an intersectional approach in her writing and photography to represent the complex identities of elderly Black women in the American South during the Great Depression. Using intersectionality as a framework, this project analyzes how Welty’s work acknowledges the overlapping forces of race, gender, age, and class that shape her subjects’ lived experiences. While documenting adversity, Welty also highlights resilience, agency, and communal empowerment. The study focuses on Welty’s literary works “A Worn Path,” “Ida M’Toy,” “A Pageant of Birds,” and “Cindy and the Joyful Noise,” alongside her Depression-era photographs from One Time, One …
Bridging The Justice Gap: Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic At North Mississippi Rural Legal Services, Emma-Kathryn Bond
Bridging The Justice Gap: Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic At North Mississippi Rural Legal Services, Emma-Kathryn Bond
Honors Theses
Over the course of two years, I spent more than 130 hours completing on-the- ground volunteer work with the Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC), a clinic within North Mississippi Rural Legal Services that provides free legal assistance to individuals navigating disputes with the IRS. While the Sixth Amendment guarantees legal representation in criminal cases, no such guarantee exists for civil matters such as tax disputes, housing instability, or loss of public benefits. Clinics like LITC fill a crucial gap by offering support in areas that are often overlooked, such as tax law, where clients risk audits, wage garnishments, and court proceedings …

Enhancing Strategies For Government Partnerships To Meet Organizational Goals And Objectives, Nuela Uche Umeh
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Organization X’s mission to strengthen legal rights and rehabilitate inmates involves effective collaboration with government entities. Organization X struggled to build strong partnerships with government agencies, limiting its ability to provide legal aid and rehabilitation services to marginalized inmates and victims of human rights violations. The purpose of this study was to use a SWOT analysis to explore the challenges and opportunities in government partnerships, aiming to identify barriers and recommend strategies to strengthen collaboration, build staff capacity, and enhance service delivery. Guided by four research questions, the study examined barriers and opportunities in government partnerships. Data were collected through …
Tackling Social Stigma: An Ethical Obligation In Healthcare Intervention To Involuntary Childlessness, Persis Naumann
Tackling Social Stigma: An Ethical Obligation In Healthcare Intervention To Involuntary Childlessness, Persis Naumann
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The stigma associated with involuntary childlessness has negatively affected health and well-being for several decades. This situation is particularly exacerbated for women within the Tamil socio-cultural context, resulting in feelings of shame, neglect, denial, isolation, and constituting a significant barrier to long-term access to healthcare services. Although advancements have been made in the provision of biomedical care, the psychosocial support remains inadequately addressed. Moreover, there are currently no healthcare interventions that specifically target the stigma associated with this issue, which hinders open communication with healthcare providers, delays necessary treatments, and adversely impacts overall health outcomes. The central thesis of this …

"Significant Bodily Intrusions": Investigations Into Law Enforcement Phlebotomy, Anne Kathleen Johnson
Dissertations and Theses
This three-paper dissertation explores law enforcement phlebotomy, the ability of law enforcement officers to draw blood. Phlebotomy is both a ubiquitous, invasive diagnostic tool as well as a social site with complex relational dynamics at play between phlebotomist and patient. Through law enforcement phlebotomy, the blood draw is co-opted from the medical field into the policing field, and the normative framework through which it is used changes: whereas medical edicts instruct providers to work with patients through an ethics of care--respecting consent and refusal--policing is not similarly bound, instead operating through a prioritization of security and efficiency. In the articles …

Women And Men In The Media, Margaret Gallagher
Communication Research Trends
Since the time of Adam and eve no theme has held the attention of storytellers and their audiences more consistently than that of sexuality and the relationship between the sexes. It is multifaceted, ever-changing, and so deeply involves everyone emotionally that few other subjects present such a challenge to sociological analysis. All would have to admit, however, that the past century has seen unprecedented changes in the role and status of women in relation to men. The mass media have played their own part in this evolution, creating images which have helped to delineate and define its shifting currents.

Toward The Wired Society: Prospects, Problems, And Proposals For A National Policy On Cable Technology, Gary H. Gerlach
Toward The Wired Society: Prospects, Problems, And Proposals For A National Policy On Cable Technology, Gary H. Gerlach
Maine Law Review
The city is already encroaching on the countryside in a modest cultural sense. Today many remote New England villages receive more channels of New York City television, and receive them more clearly, than do most residents of the five boroughs of the great city. This anomaly is because of a relatively new and still evolving technology, popularly called cable television. This article primarily addresses the broad problems now confronting the American people on how to devise wise national policies that will put this technology of the new communications to its best uses for the most people. In short, how is …
Homicide And Suicide In Latin America And Europe: A Spatial Interpretation, Kenneth G. Thompson
Homicide And Suicide In Latin America And Europe: A Spatial Interpretation, Kenneth G. Thompson
The Geographical Bulletin
To an increasing extent geographers are becoming interested in spatial variation of crime because criminal patterns in many cases tend to mirror other social and cultural characteristics. The task of analyzing spatial distribution of crime is made formidable, however, because many times data are woefully inadequate, especially on a world basis. Thedearth of international criminal statistics is reflected in the fact that not one single world map showing criminal patterns was available for reference in this study. To be sure, data exist. But many of them cannot be used for comparative purposes because of regional differences in both definitions and …
