The Idea Of Ethiopia: Heritage Tourism In The Land Of Origins, Hosaena T. Tilahun
The Idea Of Ethiopia: Heritage Tourism In The Land Of Origins, Hosaena T. Tilahun
Geography Undergraduate Senior Theses
Hosaena Tilahun's "The Idea of Ethiopia" explores how heritage tourism in Addis Ababa cultivates Ethiopian patriotism and exceptionalism. Through an in-depth, close reading of the National Museum of Ethiopia, Unity Park, and the Oromo Cultural Center, supplemented by observations at the Red Terror Memorial Museum and Dergue Prison, Tilahun examines how heritage sites shape the political memory of national resistance, revolution, and Black internationalist thought. Tilahun discovers omissions of Menelik II's role in the Red Sea Slave network, encountering museum and archival silences about the internal conquest of peoples peripheral to the northern Abyssinian empire. As these heritage site renovations …

The Impact Of Hazard Naming In Wireless Emergency Alerts: Enhancing Protective Action Decision Making And Organizational Attitudes, Micki Olson, Hugh Walpole, Jeannette Sutton, Lauren B. Cain, Nicholas Waugh
Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security, and Cybersecurity Faculty Scholarship
Wireless Emergency Alerts are an important way people learn about impending threats. Yet, these messages typically lack information about the hazard that will endanger people. In this study, we examine how naming the hazard and its associated cues in a Wireless Emergency Alert influences people’s perceptions that help them make protective action decisions, including understanding, belief, personalization, deciding, response efficacy, and self-efficacy. We also measure the extent to which naming the hazard and its cues affects an organization’s reputation and perceived transparency. To do so, we conduct a 2 (message type: named hazard vs. unnamed hazard) × 3 (hazard type: …

A Veblenian Approach To Chaos Theory, Isaiah Henry
Hatfield Graduate Journal of Public Affairs
This paper provides a comparative analysis of Veblen's belief in disequilibrium, the field of chaos theory, and how these two frameworks connect. We explore the similarities and differences between Veblen's theories and the principles of chaos theory, including their shared emphasis on complexity and unpredictability. By analyzing the connections between Veblen's economic theories and chaos theory, we can gain a deeper understanding of the nature of disequilibrium and the complex forces that shape our world.

Objectives: Alzheimer's disease and related dementias significantly affect older adults' quality of life. The clock-drawing test (CDT) is a widely used dementia screening tool due to its ease of administration and effectiveness. However, manual CDT-coding in large-scale studies can be time-intensive and prone to coding errors and is typically limited to ordinal responses. In this study, we developed a continuous CDT score using a deep learning neural network (DLNN) and evaluated its ability to classify participants as having dementia or not.
Methods: Using a nationally representative sample of older adults from the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS), we …

One Health Integration To Control And Prevent Zoonoses: Application Of Organizational Theory Literature, Lisset M. Dumet Poma, Sherril Gelmon, Julia M. Goodman, Seth E. O’Neal
Hatfield Graduate Journal of Public Affairs
Zoonoses are infectious diseases transmitted between animals and people that disproportionately affect low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The One Health (OH) approach aims to integrate systems, incentivizing collaboration among animal, human, and environmental systems to address zoonoses and improve health. Innovative solutions for effectively and sustainably achieving systems integration are needed. Organizational theories can facilitate the study of the context of OH implementation, applying comprehensive approaches that recognize the interconnections among organisms, the environment, and social systems, including the diverse entities needing integration (e.g., policy, community, public organizations). This narrative review examines organization and systems literature to provide recommendations for …
The Rhetoric Of Responsibilization: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Campaigns For Hiv Prevention, Catherine M. Pabalate
The Rhetoric Of Responsibilization: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Campaigns For Hiv Prevention, Catherine M. Pabalate
Kentucky Undergraduate Journal for the Health Humanities
Responsibilization refers to the process by which patients are made accountable for their health and wellbeing, which is determined by their habits and behaviors. Though responsibilization affords greater agency to patients, it can also result in anxiety and guilt when the patient appears "deviant" or "noncompliant." Because sexual behavior is attributed to the causality of HIV/AIDS, patients’ sexual patterns and choices are included within their medical decision-making. This rhetorical analysis focuses on pharmaceutical campaigns and commercials for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), which were released between 2012 and 2024 and are targeted towards patients at-risk for HIV/AIDS. Findings suggest that specific rhetorical …

In recent years, the gap between traditional education and the current labor market has widened dramatically: in 2024, 11. 5 % of California’s 16-24 year olds were neither in school nor employed, alongside a net decline of roughly 3 million students nationwide in the last decade and more than 4 million members of Generation Z left the job despite having conventional degrees. These trends underscore a growing disconnect between academic credentials and market-ready skills and a pressing need for alternative pathways to gainful work. We introduce SIDEQUE$T, a secure, user-friendly online marketplace engineered to bridge this divide. By allowing job …

This dissertation develops a comprehensive framework for creating indicators to evaluate transportation equity effectively. It begins with a literature review to comprehend the theoretical background, followed by expert interviews highlight gaps in current evaluation practices. Statistical modeling and machine learning analysis was conducted to first explore indicators’ impact on transportation equity, and then investigate transportation safety disparities in underserved communities. Findings from literature review, interview with professionals, and analysis results are used …
Creativity And Crisis. Case Studies Of Bureaucracy Under Pressure – Determining Factors Affecting Creativity, Andrew Lee Carlson
Creativity And Crisis. Case Studies Of Bureaucracy Under Pressure – Determining Factors Affecting Creativity, Andrew Lee Carlson
Theses and Dissertations
I studied creativity and how it interacts with the crisis environment to devise a way of determining if future situations are amenable to creativity. Through studying creativity theories and crisis responses, I developed a framework and instrument that answers the following questions, semi-quantitatively and qualitatively: 1) Is the future situation or problem amenable to creativity? 2) How much “energy” needs to be expended in solving the problem or situation? 3) Where best can I use creative energy as it relates to the subject matter or process of the situation? I studied situations ranging from personal (pursuit of this PhD), critical …

Couples And Pornography: A Dyadic Latent Profile Analysis Of Romantic Partners And Pornography Use, Michelle E. Haddock Edwards
Theses and Dissertations
Research on the outcomes of pornography use for romantic couples has been extensive yet inconclusive. Studies have examined pornography use in a wide variety of contexts, leading to a wide variety of outcomes and well-being. The current study uses latent profile analysis to account for many contextual factors at once, dyadic data to examine the perspective of both partners simultaneously, and a range of individual and relational well-being outcomes to understand how different relational pornography use patterns lead to well-being. Results provided evidence for six unique profiles of couples based on pornography use patterns (personal use frequency, perceived partner use …

Risky Business: Organizational Challenges In International Support For Civilian Self-Protection, J. M. Welsh, Emily Paddon Rhoads, J. Masullo
Political Science Faculty Works
Over the last decade, a range of international actors has moved away from direct forms of intervention to protect civilian populations in favor of “bottom-up” approaches that emphasize external support for civilian self-protection (CSP). While this indirect action is often perceived to be less costly, more legitimate, and potentially more effective, we argue that external support for CSP is a “risky business” that presents a significant dilemma for international governmental and nongovernmental organizations. Drawing on literature from sociology, economics, and civil war studies, we conceptualize and categorize the risks of unintended consequences that could accompany external support for CSP and …

Configurational Analysis Of Comprehensive Healthcare Quality: A Neutrosophic Set And Fsqca Approach, Jasson Humberto Ruiz Silva, Sandra Dayanara Correa Solis, Manuel Richard Naranjo Rodríguez, Fatima Lissett Zambrano Coello
Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
This study employs a nonlinear, neutrosophic approach to examine gaps in comprehensive healthcare by analyzing the interplay of Health Resource Availability (HRA), Professional Competence of Health Personnel (CPPS), and Accessibility and Response Time (ATR). Traditional statistical methods often fail to capture the uncertainty inherent in healthcare evaluations; this research addresses this by applying neutrosophic set theory to data from a survey of 15 professionals. fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) indicates that CPPS is a highly consistent (≈0.98) necessary condition for quality care, with HRA also being a strong necessary condition (≈0.89). As sufficient pathways, HRA individually (consistency ≈0.98, coverage …

Modeling Barriers And Facilitators Of Access To Sport Through Neutrosophic Cognitive Maps., Carlos Alcívar-Trejo, Karem González-Palma, Fidel Márquez-Sánchez, Fátima Campos-Cárdenas, Adriana María Estupiñán Sera
Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
This study's objective was to assess barriers and facilitators to access to sport utilizing neutrosophic cognitive maps to identify variables contributing to sports participation. Therefore, a qualitative neutrosophic theory ap-proach was taken—this approach allows for mapping of such relationships even in uncertain situations. Data col-lection efforts consisted of expert interviews and surveys of current and former athletes, which were analyzed to create cognitive maps representing interdependent positional relationships of variables such as resources, moti-vation, and governmental resources. Among the major results are that the most prominent barriers are lack of adequate resources, fiscal resources, and socioeconomic equity while the most …

Multicriteria Analysis Of Peruvian Salad As A Tourism Product Using Plithogenic Offsets, Adán Humberto Estela Estela, David Chacón Chacón, Carlos Fretel Martínez
Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
This study is relevant to the evaluation of Peruvian salad as a tourism product, filling an unexamined research gap as the literature does not currently possess a sound evaluation of gastronomic products by valuing the cultural element generated by and for the tourists. This is especially important in today's world where gastronomic tourism is the wave of the future socio-economically and as a cultural signifier in Peru. Where salads could be considered a secondary plate, for example, it may be the perfect avenue to supplement variety in culinary projects from within the scope of Peru. Yet there is no reliable …

Evolution And Application Of Lean Manufacturing In The Production Industry: Advances And Trends (2015-2025) Through Neutrosophic Cognitive Mapping Analysis Of Crit-Ical Success Factors, Eluard Alexander Mendoza Zenozain
Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
This article examines how Lean manufacturing evolved between 2015 and 2025—a decade marked by rapid technological disruption and the rise of artificial intelligence (AI). The research identifies critical success factors of Lean and analyzes how AI has reshaped its implementation. To address the uncertainty and complexity of expert evaluations, Neutrosophic Cognitive Mapping (NCM) is used as a methodological tool. NCM not only maps interrelated success factors but also incorporates the ambiguity inherent in human and technological as-sessments. Results show that AI boosts Lean’s effectiveness through predictive analytics and inventory optimi-zation but reveals limitations when workforce training is insufficient. This intersection …

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
This study systematically examines the applications of neutrosophic logic in Ecuadorian medicine, focusing on its role in improving medical decision making and preventive healthcare. By conducting a structured literature review selected articles, the research highlights how neutrosophic methods—such as Single-Valued Neutrosophic Sets (SVNS) and Neutrosophic Cognitive Maps (NCMs)—address uncertainty, indeterminacy, and contradictions inherent in clinical and public health data. Key contributions include improved diagnostic accuracy in maternal health, risk assessment for chronic diseases, and ethical decision making in telemedicine, demonstrating neutrosophic logic’s superiority over traditional binary approaches. The findings advocate for a broader implementation of neutrosophic frameworks in Ecuador’s healthcare …

Neutrosophic Causal Analysis Of Gamification Strategies For Promoting Reading Habits In Eighth-Grade Students, Roger Martinez Isaac, Gladis Narciza Vargas Azuero, María Narcisa Carrillo Suárez, Elsy Rodríguez Revelo
Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
This study explores the connection between gamification elements and the development of reading habits among eighth-grade students through neutrosophic set theory and fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA). This investigation is different from previous ones because most studies focused on gamification fail to embrace the uncertainty and complexity of real life when it comes to generalizability. As a result, a neutrosophic framework was established for this study. To this end, 15 individuals answered a neutrosophic Likert scale questionnaire which resulted in a conglomerate of ratings that depicts their opinion on the gamified elements, technology use, and feedback loop systems afforded to …

Thinking About Complexity In Latin America: Contributions Of Neutrosophy In Dialogue With Edgar Morin, Noel Batista-Hernández, Maikel Yelandi Leyva-Vázquez, Alenna Rosa Batista-Barallobre
Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
Smarandache’s neutrosophic logic—and its broader philosophical umbrella of MultiAlism, which insists that any assertion must be considered together with its neutral and anti-assertive counterparts—offers powerful methodological tools to operationalize Edgar Morin’s complexity thinking. While Morin contributes the principles of dialogic, recursiveness and the hologrammatic approach, his continental framework can be difficult to apply empirically. Neutrosophy and MultiAlism formalize contradiction, uncertainty and multidimensionality, thereby bridging theory and practice. In Latin America, where complexity thinking is widely adopted to address realities marked by inequality and instability, this integration enables rigorous modelling of non-linear phenomena. Applications such as Neutrosophic QCA (NsQCA), Neutrosophic Cognitive …

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
This paper investigates the efficacy of emerging technologies in protective forest conservation—artificial intelligence, drones, remote sensing, and blockchain—and whether such tools foster threat detection and enhanced biodiversity and human interaction. As deforestation and climate change continue to plague the planet, protected areas become more critical, and although successful conservation efforts exist, traditional tools fail to adequately provide the granularity and scalability required for nuanced action such as illegal logging or forest fires. The emerging abilities of these innovations have been published in scientific literature. However, there exists a translational gap in a systematic determination of their efficacy since levels of …

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
The effective implementation of inquiry strategies in higher education is hampered by multiple interconnected fac-tors, from institutional constraints to pedagogical barriers, creating a complex scenario that traditional analysis methods fail to fully capture. This problem takes on particular relevance in the current context, where the devel-opment of critical thinking has become a fundamental competency for facing the challenges of constantly changing societies. While numerous studies on active pedagogies exist, there remains a notable lack of approaches that can adequately manage the ambiguity, contradictions, and uncertainty inherent in real-life educational systems. To ad-dress this limitation, this research proposes an innovative analytical …
