Storytelling Pedagogy To Promote Musical Expression Through Community Building In The High School Ensemble Class, Hector E. Ayerdiz Aug 2025

Storytelling Pedagogy To Promote Musical Expression Through Community Building In The High School Ensemble Class, Hector E. Ayerdiz

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Despite research on technical pedagogical techniques to improve musicianship in students, there are still some non-conventional pedagogical approaches that educators have not researched in detail. Among these is purposeful storytelling to develop community and vulnerability in students to enhance musical expression and technique. This study sought to understand the impact of the music teachers' use of storytelling on high school music ensemble students. It also investigated storytelling's usefulness in developing music skills and techniques in students by forming positive learning environments. Guided by narrative design, this qualitative research study looked at the phenomenon of storytelling in the high school music …

Examining Literacy Habits, Reading Attitudes, And Literacy Perceptions Of College-Educated Black Men: A Case Study, Turkesshia D. Moore Aug 2025

Examining Literacy Habits, Reading Attitudes, And Literacy Perceptions Of College-Educated Black Men: A Case Study, Turkesshia D. Moore

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this multiple-case qualitative study was to explore the literacy attitudes, reading habits, and literacy perceptions of college-educated Black men in North Carolina. The theory guiding this study is Freire’s Critical Literacy Theory (CLT). CLT supports educators in providing critical pedagogy, which includes critical thinking and critical text analysis. Participants in this study viewed literacy as a valuable life skill. They felt they would have had more positive literacy experiences during their K-12 schooling if they received culturally relevant and culturally responsive instruction. The central research question for the case study was: How do college-educated Black men describe …

Investigating Black Students’ Perceived Motivations For Degree Attainment At A Community College: A Case Study, Kacie Rene Birdsong

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this case study is to discover the motivation that influences the retention for Black student graduates at a local community college in southern Mississippi. The practical implications of this research are significant, as college graduation rates directly reflect the financial health of a higher education institution. Understanding why Black students are particularly motivated to complete their degrees is not only academically intriguing but also has practical implications for the future of higher education. As enrollment rates are on the decline, graduation rates become even more critical. When it becomes an issue of many students dropping out of …

A Qualitative Study On Retention And Engagement At A Private Historically Black College And University Among First-Year African American Students From Rural Communities, Miquelle Latoine Fields

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand how the intersection of rural culture and race influences the lived experiences of first-year African American students at a private Historically Black College and University (HBCU). Moustakas's theory on phenomenological research methods, based on Husserl's transcendental phenomenology framework, guided the study. The research focused on how cultural context intersects with the lived experiences of first-year African American students from rural areas. It examined how this diversity affects their retention and engagement at a private HBCU. The central research question was: How do the lived experiences of first-year African American college students …

Recognising The Unseen: Emotional Labour In Teenage And Adolescent Care, John Bowe Aug 2025

Recognising The Unseen: Emotional Labour In Teenage And Adolescent Care, John Bowe

Journal of Social Care

This study delves into the often-overlooked aspect of Emotional Labour (EL) within social care work, specifically focusing on its impact on social care workers who support teenagers and adolescents. EL, defined as managing emotions to meet organisational objectives, is crucial in shaping best practices within care professions. While EL can yield positive outcomes, this study primarily examines its negative repercussions, particularly in relation to professional burnout among social care workers. The study explores the organisational barriers that may compel social care workers to emotionally detach from their roles as a protective measure through quantitative analysis. Drawing on Hochschild's EL concept …

Opening The Black-Box Of Mental Disorders: An Actor-Network Theory Analysis Of Schizophrenia, Brandalyn Morris Aug 2025

Opening The Black-Box Of Mental Disorders: An Actor-Network Theory Analysis Of Schizophrenia, Brandalyn Morris

McNair Scholars Manuscripts

Schizophrenia is a poorly understood mental dysfunction. It is culturally specific and encompasses several disease entities that defy robust classification. Using a few of the methodological notions from Bruno Latour’s Actor-Network Theory (ANT), this research seeks to disambiguate schizophrenia. The scope and focus of this examination will be restricted to three actors/actants within the assemblage of this mental disorder. By appropriating tools and terminology from ANT to reveal human and non-human actors and actants within the DSM classification system, the medical model of mental illness, and psychopharmacology, the objective of this research is to describe how the current concept of …

Examining The Active Ingredients In An Anti-Stigma Intervention For Individuals With A Criminal History, Kaylee Cook Aug 2025

Examining The Active Ingredients In An Anti-Stigma Intervention For Individuals With A Criminal History, Kaylee Cook

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Obtaining employment is key to successful reintegration for people who have been incarcerated. However, employers are often hesitant to hire formerly incarcerated persons due to general negative attitudes toward them and concern that they will not exhibit positive work behaviors. Interventions to reduce general types of stigma exist, with primary strategies involving education and/or contact. Most research examining the effectiveness of stigma-reducing strategies largely focus on reducing identity-based stigma (e.g., race, mental illness), with limited research on reducing choice-based stigma, such as those with criminal histories. However, regardless of targeted stigma, there is no consensus regarding which intervention format (i.e., …

Predictors Of Sanction Length Following Correctional Disciplinary Hearings: The Role Of Individual Characteristics, Misconduct Type, And Placement In Segregation, Jade Renee Horton Aug 2025

Predictors Of Sanction Length Following Correctional Disciplinary Hearings: The Role Of Individual Characteristics, Misconduct Type, And Placement In Segregation, Jade Renee Horton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Misconduct by incarcerated individuals is a significant threat to institutional safety. While research has highlighted discrepancies in who engages or who is reported as engaging in misconduct and suggests staff biases may impact disciplinary decisions, available research tends to narrowly focus on the use of disciplinary segregation as an outcome and often neglects other potential disciplinary outcomes that are less serious and the predictors of those outcomes. The current study examined predictors of the seriousness of outcomes, measured in length (weeks) of imposed sanction, of disciplinary hearings. It was hypothesized that those who are identified as Black, with a serious …
