Barriers To Mental Health Seeking Among Army Aviation Personnel: A Preliminary Report, Aric J. Raus Feb 2024

Barriers To Mental Health Seeking Among Army Aviation Personnel: A Preliminary Report, Aric J. Raus

National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)

This research explores barriers to mental health seeking, self-reported symptoms, and perspectives on self-help mental-wellness options among U.S. Army Aviation Personnel. Safe aviation operations require constant focus and mental clarity. These requirements expand when considering the implications and added stress of military operations, especially in combat scenarios. Yet, recent studies demonstrate that aviation personnel avoid seeking healthcare due to fears of losing their medical certification. This report provides preliminary results from the first known study on barriers to mental health seeking among U.S. Army aviation personnel. Utilizing an anonymous survey instrument, facilitated primarily through Social Media recruiting of current and …

Elementary Educators' Experiences Implementing Mandatory Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Curricula, Latonsha Diane Pridgen Feb 2024

Elementary Educators' Experiences Implementing Mandatory Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Curricula, Latonsha Diane Pridgen

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a recognized public health problem with lasting adverse impacts on survivors, their families, and society, and three million children are affected by CSA. School-based CSA prevention education is the primary prevention method most commonly used to address this social problem. As such, legislators in 28 U.S. regions have enacted laws requiring CSA prevention curricula be administered in public schools. Although several researchers have studied the efficacy of school-based CSA prevention curricula, there has been limited research exploring the experiences of educators implementing the curricula. The goal of this generic qualitative study was to examine the …

Implementing Motivational Interviewing To Improve Medication Adherence: A Staff Education Project, Marlon Medina

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Medication nonadherence is a major health issue among psychiatric patients as studies show a significantly high rate of medication nonadherence among psychiatric patients. This impacts the health outcomes of patients taking psychotropic medications. Psychiatric nurses have a major role to play in implementing strategies to improve medication adherence among patients. This project proposes the implementation of psychoeducation based on motivational interviewing to improve medication adherence among psychiatric patients. An educational workshop was provided to four nurses over 4 weeks to improve the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of staff members at an outpatient care clinic, ultimately, to improve the patients’ medication …

Photovoice: A Method To Interrogate Positionality And Critical Reflexivity, H. Shellae Versey Feb 2024

Photovoice: A Method To Interrogate Positionality And Critical Reflexivity, H. Shellae Versey

The Qualitative Report

Photovoice is a visual method for interrogating subjective perspectives. Rather than solely relying on investigator-developed tools, photovoice allows participants to inform research by “showing” their lived realities through photographs, resulting in a more collaborative, inclusive, and community-informed process. Though applicable to a wide range of social science research, photovoice remains relatively underutilized, especially as a tool for interrogating reflexivity. Given its power to reveal the unseen, this paper considers the potential for photovoice as a self-reflexive tool by turning the lens towards the investigator. Though typically used by the researcher to enhance transparency and navigate power differentials in community-based participatory …

African American Family Structure Of Caring For A Member With Alzheimer's Disease And Dementia, Sherry Lane Perry Feb 2024

African American Family Structure Of Caring For A Member With Alzheimer's Disease And Dementia, Sherry Lane Perry

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia (ADRD) affect African Americans (AA) more than other ethnic or racial groups. It is common for AA diagnosed with ADRD to be cared for in the home. Historically, family members that provide care consist of significant others, relatives, and extended family. The United States Census Bureau showed an increase in Americans aged sixty and older from 55.7 million to 74.6 million. Due to the increase in the AA elderly population, the need for family caregivers will increase for this minority group. This study explored how AA family caregivers described their experiences and unique family structure …

How To Respond To Racist Patients: Recommendations From A Literature Review, Benjamin Caplan, Jocelyn Mitchell-Williams Feb 2024

How To Respond To Racist Patients: Recommendations From A Literature Review, Benjamin Caplan, Jocelyn Mitchell-Williams

Cooper Rowan Medical Journal

Introduction: Dealing with racist patients is not uncommon, and these interactions can sever the therapeutic alliance, as well as leave providers feeling isolated, dehumanized, and ashamed. Investigation of published recommendations for handling these situations can give victims, peers, and institutions the tools necessary to prepare, protect, and support providers through these challenging encounters.

Methods: This paper is a literature review. For inclusion in this review, studies must have met the criteria of providing recommendations for healthcare providers or institutions on how to deal with racist patients. Excluded articles did not include recommendations on how to handle such situations or did …

Psychology Faculty Publications

Community gun violence disproportionately impacts youth in low-income urban neighborhoods. Integrating trauma informed mental health care in community-based out-of-school time (OST) programs is an innovative method of service delivery for these youth. This article provides justification for integrating evidence-based, trauma-informed services in OST programs within communities characterized by high rates of violent crime to minimize the impact of violence exposure on youth mental health. We describe the initial feasibility of a model program, the Violence Intervention and Prevention (VIP) Initiative, implemented in a small city in southeastern Pennsylvania. Within the first six months of the VIP Initiative, 95 community residents …

Examining The Feasibility And Acceptability Of An Online Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program For Frontline Child Protection Social Workers In England, Oliver Beer, Lauren B. Mcinroy, Jennifer Hefner, Sandra Beer

School of Health Professions

This study explores the feasibility and acceptability of an online mindfulness-based intervention (O-MBI) for stress prevention and reduction among frontline child protection social workers (F-CPSWs) in England. In Phase I, a non-randomized, one-arm feasibility study (N=104) demonstrated post-O-MBI reductions in perceived stress and increased mindfulness. Phase II employed a phenomenological approach using semi-structured interviews (n=7). Participants suggested adjustments to content, delivery, and design, highlighting the need for customization. Despite promising results, the study underscores the importance of tailoring interventions to individual needs and circumstances. Future research should delve into O-MBI effectiveness with a more diverse F-CPSW sample.

Following a rapid literature review about access to supports and services for people with disability from refugee backgrounds, workshops were held with 38 people with disability and family members from Syrian and …

Critical Consciousness Is An Individual Difference: A Test Of Measurement Equivalence In American, Ukrainian, And Iranian Universities, Adam Murry, Mazna Patka Feb 2024

Critical Consciousness Is An Individual Difference: A Test Of Measurement Equivalence In American, Ukrainian, And Iranian Universities, Adam Murry, Mazna Patka

All Works

We live in a world in which we are socially, politically, economically, and environmentally connected with other people. Online communication has facilitated people coming together from different parts of the world. In terms of social justice movements, people have come together to share ideas about how they perceive social inequality and how to address it, which is what academics call critical consciousness. While scholars have explored critical consciousness in the American context, whether it operates on a global scale is under-explored. To address this question, we administered the Critical Consciousness Scale (a validated survey) with students from the United States, …

Impact Of Case Management Models On Congestive Heart Failure Patients’ Length Of Stay And Readmissions, Kyleigh Camp Lesson Feb 2024

Impact Of Case Management Models On Congestive Heart Failure Patients’ Length Of Stay And Readmissions, Kyleigh Camp Lesson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Length of stay (LOS) and readmissions are two metrics that are often at the center of improvement efforts for health care systems. There is a lack of evidence regarding the optimal case management model needed to reduce LOS and readmissions for coronary heart failure (CHF) patients. One initiative that has become nationally recognized as a method to improve LOS and readmissions is effective discharge planning. Discharge planning is conducted by case managers whose primary role is navigating patients’ complex social, physical, and psychological issues. The purpose of this quantitative study focused on CHF patients and compared two case management models …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

BACKGROUND: Ovarian cancer ranks 12th in cancer incidence among women in the United States and 5th among causes of cancer-related death. The typical treatment of ovarian cancer focuses on disease management, with little attention given to the survivorship needs of the patient. Qualitative work alludes to a gap in survivorship care; yet, evidence is lacking to support the delivery of survivorship care for individuals living with ovarian cancer. We developed the POSTCare survivorship platform with input from survivors of ovarian cancer and care partners as a means of delivering patient-centered survivorship care. This process is framed by the chronic care …

Descriptive statistical analysis assessed the public availability of program statements and their alignment with APTA core beliefs.

Results. Among the programs, 95.6% had …

Storytelling As A Cultural Context For London-Irish Writing In Donall Macamhlaigh’S Schnitzer O’Shea, Jimmy Murphy’S Kings Of The Kilburn High Road And Enda Walsh’S The Walworth Farce, Niamh Macgloin Feb 2024

Storytelling As A Cultural Context For London-Irish Writing In Donall Macamhlaigh’S Schnitzer O’Shea, Jimmy Murphy’S Kings Of The Kilburn High Road And Enda Walsh’S The Walworth Farce, Niamh Macgloin

Critical Inquiries Into Irish Studies

The oral tradition of storytelling is culturally significant to Irish literature and important for immigrant communities as a way to connect with their home culture and share stories without the necessity of literacy. This essay considers the motif of storytelling and the importance of voicing the community in much London-Irish literature. In Walsh’s The Walworth Farce, a play within a play, the main character obsesses over retelling the story of their emigration from Ireland but corrupts its purity as he pushes his narrative of innocence too far, and the cycle of storytelling begins again. Similarly, in Murphy’s Kings of the …

Lived Experiences Of Young Adults Raised With A Sibling With Autism, Lamika Demitris Thomas Feb 2024

Lived Experiences Of Young Adults Raised With A Sibling With Autism, Lamika Demitris Thomas

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

When a child has autism spectrum disorder (ASD), the family structure is affected. Although researchers have documented increased stress and depression among parents of children with ASD, they have not adequately explored siblings’ perspectives on the emotional, physical, and/or psychological implications of having a brother or sister with ASD. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore siblings’ lived experiences of growing up in a household with a sibling with ASD. The conceptual framework for this study was grounded in the siblings embedded systems framework (SESF), which helps contextualize siblings’ experiences, including interacting factors, and how these experiences …

Foster Care, Aces, And Social Communication Development: A Mixed Methods Study, Caroline Marie Giuffre Feb 2024

Foster Care, Aces, And Social Communication Development: A Mixed Methods Study, Caroline Marie Giuffre

Theses and Dissertations

A childhood spent in foster care has been linked to various adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) including neglect, maltreatment, and physical abuse. The presence of ACEs has the potential to negatively impact neurological development. Our study seeks to inform practicing speech-language pathologists on the potential risks of a history of foster care on the pragmatic domain of language: social communication. The current literature focuses more on general language development, such as expressive language or the prevalence of language delays. This article details our use of a survey study given to adoptive parents of foster children on their child’s social communication abilities. …

Relational Health, Minority Stress, And Psychological Well-Being Among Sexual Orientation And Gender Minority Counseling Students, Jinnelle V. Powell Feb 2024

Relational Health, Minority Stress, And Psychological Well-Being Among Sexual Orientation And Gender Minority Counseling Students, Jinnelle V. Powell

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Sexual orientation and gender minority (SGM) counseling students in the United States are exposed to minority stress, which has been linked to psychological distress, during counselor training. There is an expectation that counseling students are well so that it does not interfere with their helping role. Scholarship in other disciplines shows that a sense of belonging and community can serve as protective factors against minority stress for SGM individuals. The purpose of this quantitative, correlational study was to investigate the influence of minority stress and relational health (in counselor education and broader communities) on SGM counseling students’ psychological well-being, a …

A Tale Of Two Low-Income, First-Generation Engineering Students: Well-Being, Belonging, And The Role Of Chosen Family, Justin C. Major

First-Generation Symposium

Belonging has been identified as an important, if not the most important, factor impacting the success of college students, especially (multi)marginalized students in engineering programs. Well-being and belonging are deeply entwined, helping to explain how the strength of students affinities lead them to feel a sense of true happiness that guide their holistic success. In this presentation, I present two differing narrative stories from Samantha and Rocky, two non-white, low-income, first-generation women in engineering. At the time of their narratives, both women were in the fourth year of their engineering degrees; however, Samantha was graduating and Rocky was not. In …
