Analysis Of Rankings Of Causal Factors Of Substance Use, Elizabeth Mathews
Liberty University Research Week
This study investigates and compares causal factors associated with substance use among both students and professionals. This study focuses on a range of biological, environmental, and psychological evidence-based causal factors for substance use and misuse. The goal of this research is to explore how novices and experts conceptualize factors related to substance use. Forty-seven residential undergraduate psychology students from Liberty University participated in evaluating 18 evidence-based causal factors using concept mapping to explain how implicit cognitive processing – rather than just explicit processing – informs substance use risk. Additionally, professionals in psychology, counseling, and social work in the general Lynchburg …

Why Do We Serve?: Motivators And Barriers To Volunteering Among Undergraduate Students., Adam Bellis, Geneva Ferro, Kyla Slaughter
Campus Research Month
Volunteerism during an individual’s college years can potentially influence a lifetime of service. This research focuses on the motivators and barriers undergraduate students at a private Christian university face, focusing on differences between helping and non-helping majors. Data is gathered through convenience sampling via surveys administered to current undergraduate students at Southern Adventist University. With the importance universities place on service learning, this research will show ways in which students can be motivated to engage in service opportunities. It will additionally showcase potential barriers that can be addressed to further service engagement among students leading to a lifetime of service.

Bullying is a complex public health concern, with Research suggesting that prevention is dependent on school and local demographics. Bully victimization is also heavily associated with students who have adverse childhood experiences. Additionally, Research supports the use of positive behavior supports and interventions as well as the involvement of the greater community to prevent bullying. Forest Hills Public Schools has yet to adopt this Research within their policies and anti-bullying programs. They also do not offer professional development regarding this topic. This project addresses current anti-bullying prevention curriculum, programs, and interventions while also considering the impact that adverse childhood experiences …

Implementation Of Psychiatric Collaborative Care Management In Rural Primary Care Practices, Ryan Dean Kruis
Implementation Of Psychiatric Collaborative Care Management In Rural Primary Care Practices, Ryan Dean Kruis
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Behavioral health (BH) disorders are highly prevalent in the United States and especially concerning in rural communities which disproportionately lack access to BH services. While models for integrating BH into primary care, such as psychiatric collaborative care management (CoCM), have shown promise in mitigating the BH crisis, implementation in rural communities has proved challenging.
This dissertation examines implementation of CoCM nationally and in rural settings through three distinct aims. First, a claims-based retrospective cohort study was used to determine whether commercially insured patients receiving CoCM had lower acute BH care utilization and cost as compared to similar patients not receiving …

Family Medicine’S Role In Addressing The Intersections Of Redlining And Climate Change, Daryl O. Traylor, Eboni E. Anderson, Brianna Clark, Alex M. Smith, Cooper K. Allenbrand
Journal of Sustainable Social Impact
Redlining, the practice of discriminating against specific neighborhoods based on race and socioeconomic status, leads to persistent environmental hazards and socioeconomic inequalities that have lasting adverse health effects on their populations. Health disparities are further exacerbated through the concentration of environmental hazards, as well as the escalating impact of climate change, which poses an increased risk of respiratory illness, cardiovascular disease, mental health issues, heat-related illness, infectious diseases, food insecurity, and socioeconomic difficulties in redline neighborhoods.
This paper examines the interplay of redlining, climate change, and health disparities, with an emphasis on the enduring consequences for these marginalized communities. Through …

Psychometric Analysis Of The Geses, Anthony Robert Eldridge
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Research suggests a surge in the number of students attending a college or university. However, whether first-generation students complete their degree program remains a problem. Approximately thirty-three percent of first-generation students who began postsecondary education in 2003–04 left postsecondary education without earning a postsecondary credential. The current study investigated the psychometric properties of a revised version of a measure of academic, research, and social self-efficacy. Specifically, a sample of 403 Mturk participants ’completed the Graduate Education Self-Efficacy Scale (GESES). There were three primary research questions: 1) For a revised version of the GESES, is the original three-factor structure supported, 2) …

The Trauma-Informed Church: An Investigative Study On Congregational Community In Trauma Recovery, Joel Ogle
Liberty University Research Week
This study explores the importance and impact of congregational community within the framework of the local church in supporting individuals through trauma recovery. Through the application of Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) (2014) key principles of trauma-informed practice into current empirical literature, a faith centered approach is identified and analyzed (Singer, 2024). This research addresses important psychological principles such as trauma response and trauma-informed care. Studies such as Simpson (2021) and ter Kuile and Ehring (2014) show that a majority of pastoral care revolves around trauma issues. Therefore, it is imperative that the local church structure ministry …

Cultivating Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Approaches To Social And Emotional Learning For Students With Or At-Risk For Emotional And Behavioral Dis/Abilities, Sharde Theodore, Lindsay Romano, Fanica Young, Danica Moise, Tahnee Wilder
Excelsior: Leadership in Teaching and Learning
School policies are largely driven by perceptions and expectations for how students should behave academically and socially, yet these practices often lack the cultural relevance and sustainability required to support racially, ethnically, and linguistically diverse (RELD) students with or at risk for emotional and behavioral dis/orders (EBD). Similarly, many evidence-based practices for behavior do not consider internalizing behaviors (e.g., anxiety, toxic stress), exemplifying a critical need for equitable practices aimed at supporting the prosocial and emotional needs of RELD students with or at risk for EBD. Given the multifaceted social, emotional, and behavioral needs of RELD students with or at …

Examining The Relationship Between Gender And Anxiety Levels, Lacey Estep, Monica Himes
2024 Celebration of Student Scholarship - Poster Presentations
Anxiety is a prevalent problem in our society, and it negatively affects many adults in the United States every year. The National Health Survey, which was conducted in 2019, found that 15.6% of adults experienced anxiety symptoms within the past two weeks of when the survey was given (Terlizzi & Villarroel, 2019). That means that approximately 1 in 6 adults aged 18 and over in the United States are experiencing psychological impairment. This large population of adult Americans experiencing anxiety raises the curiosity about the factors that play a role in anxiety, including whether or not gender has an effect …

According to data collected by BMC Public Health, from a total of 211,376 across 34 states, 5 7 .8% of people have experienced at least 1 adverse childhood event (Giano et al., 2020). Trauma affects many aspects of an individual's life including emotional regulation, relationships with others, and even their sense of self (Ayers, 2020). The current study evaluated the correlation between adverse childhood experiences and the future onset of substance use disorder with a particular focus on opioid use disorder: This study used the results of self-reporting surveys completed by 44 participants to examine the possible relationship between people …
Worth Its Weight In Gold: Compassion Fatigue In Kentucky Animal Shelter Workers, Matthew Fitch, Elizabeth Perkins, Suzanne Tallichet
Worth Its Weight In Gold: Compassion Fatigue In Kentucky Animal Shelter Workers, Matthew Fitch, Elizabeth Perkins, Suzanne Tallichet
2024 Celebration of Student Scholarship - Poster Presentations
Compassion fatigue is a term that describes the physical, emotional, and psychological effect of helping others in times of need. Stressful or traumatic experiences can trigger compassion fatigue, especially after the action of giving care or treatment to something only for it to fail expectations of recovery. Compassion fatigue is often compared to burnout, however, burnout is related to occupational stress and being overworked, while compassion fatigue comes from working with victims of trauma. Animal shelter workers consistently deal with animals who need care or treatment, causing compassion fatigue to become statistically higher in these individuals.

Gender Inclusive Restrooms At Morehead State University, Stephanie Perry, Bernadette Barton, Constance Hardesty
2024 Celebration of Student Scholarship - Poster Presentations
While attending Morehead State University, we observed a lack of accessible all-gender restrooms for transgender and nonbinary people on our campus. We want to ensure that our campus cultivates an environment of inclusion for every student who attends the university. To make our initiative happen, we have been engaging with the community of our campus through conversations and the use of a petition. Our goal is to see inclusive restrooms spread over our campus, as well as a more inclusive environment for faculty staff and students. We hope to see this happen through advocating for getting nongender specific signs for …
Strategies For Coping With Racial Microaggressions Among African American Medical Social Workers, Robert Ebot Tambe Ebot
Strategies For Coping With Racial Microaggressions Among African American Medical Social Workers, Robert Ebot Tambe Ebot
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Racial microaggressions are prevalent in the field of social work. Social workers have reported experiencing racial microaggressions from coworkers, patients, and patients’ families. However, little is known about coping strategies that African American medical social workers use to mitigate the effects of racial microaggressions in the workplace. Therefore, the purpose of this generic qualitative study was to increase understanding of how African American medical social workers perceive and cope with racial microaggressions in the workplace. A generic qualitative approach was used to explore this topic, as well as how these social workers subsequently cope with perceived racial microaggressions. Twelve African …
The Need For Standardized Training For Volunteer Healthcare Chaplains, Dominic Anthony Korzecki
The Need For Standardized Training For Volunteer Healthcare Chaplains, Dominic Anthony Korzecki
Masters Theses
For the past 50 years, many studies have examined the effects of Spiritual Care in medical environments. Though these studies have helped support the legitimacy and necessity for the presence of spiritual care in medicine, a lack of attention has been given to the level of professionalism of those who have been granted permission to administer care. The objective of my thesis is to determine the following: 1) if medical organizations that utilize volunteer-only spiritual care programs for their patients, and families, provide the same level of care as ones staffed by trained professionals, 2) if volunteer-only chaplaincy programs generate …
