Unveiling The Silence: Examining Mental Health Treatment In Japanese American Incarceration Camps And Its Legacy On Subsequent Generations, Katie Masano Hill

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

The Japanese American incarceration during World War II under Executive Order 9066 signed by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt remains a poignant chapter in American history. Unknown and not appropriately understood for so long, this research paper delves into the psychological repercussions of this dark period, exploring the mental health treatment within the camps and the enduring legacy on subsequent generations. Drawing from primary archival records, medical documents, oral histories, statistical analyses, and personal accounts, this research hopes to shed light on the emotional distress, institutionalizations, suicides, and the silent yet profound psychological scars left by this traumatic experience in order …

The Black Maternal Mortality Rate: Furthering The Discussion On The Deadly Symptomatic Reflections Of Structural Racism On Black Mothers And Analyzing State-Level Policies' Effectiveness In Lowering The Black Maternal Mortality Rate, Allison Howard Apr 2024

The Black Maternal Mortality Rate: Furthering The Discussion On The Deadly Symptomatic Reflections Of Structural Racism On Black Mothers And Analyzing State-Level Policies' Effectiveness In Lowering The Black Maternal Mortality Rate, Allison Howard

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

In the US, Black women are more likely to die during pregnancy when compared to their White counterparts. Black Maternal Mortality is not only a vast issue nationwide but a challenging one to solve. Previous research has identified structural racism as a primary factor in the Black Maternal Mortality Rate. This form of racism in the preconception, prenatal, and postpartum periods can turn into deadly symptoms that are problematic to the mother's health. Most existing research has developed from this root cause and turned to national-level policies as key to rectifying this problem. However, there has been little focus on …

Professionals, Not Laborers: Historical Contingencies Impacting Faculty Prestige And Unionization, Camden M. Webb Apr 2024

Professionals, Not Laborers: Historical Contingencies Impacting Faculty Prestige And Unionization, Camden M. Webb

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Some higher education faculty believe that unionization is beneath their status, despite lacking ownership of the means of production. While higher education experienced increasing importance in the United States during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, faculty unionization saw periods of both growth and decline. From a macro-level framework in social structures of accumulation (SSA) theory, with additions from Marx, the Ehrenreichs, Bourdieu, and Simmel, my research develops a theory to explain the impact of changing social structures on status reproduction and faculty unionization. SSA theory explores the historical contingencies that impact relationships between institutions and capital accumulation. Marx’s class relationships, …

“There’S A Term For That?”: Moral Injury In K-5 Teachers, Grace Ahn Apr 2024

“There’S A Term For That?”: Moral Injury In K-5 Teachers, Grace Ahn

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine how changes in the nature of teacher work due to factors such as high-stakes accountability systems and teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to teachers’ experiences of moral injury. Understanding moral injury is important because it is an issue for teachers who remain in the profession and for those who decide to leave. Moral injury has been examined in the context of American Public Education and scholars have contributed to the growing body of moral injury in teachers. However, a review of the literature reveals the need for more empirical data to …

The Perceived Impact Of An "Awareness Toolkit" On Alzheimer Caregivers' Preparedness, Burden, And Posttraumatic Growth, Ann Rivers

Social Work Doctoral Dissertations

Over 7 million Americans age 65 and older live with Alzheimer’s in the United States, and more than 11 million caregivers of people with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias provided an estimated 18 billion hours of unpaid care valued at $340 billion (Alzheimer’s Association, 2023). This study implemented a new intervention called an "Awareness Toolkit" for Alzheimer's caregivers comprised of Alzheimer’s disease-related education, community resources, and support tailored to the county where care was provided, including caregiver self-care and coping tips. The aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of an Awareness Toolkit intervention and examine its influence …

AimTo assess student nurses understanding and skills in the application of antimicrobial stewardship knowledge to practice.DesignQuantitative.MethodsCross-sectional survey.ResultsFive hundred and twenty three student nurses responded across 23 UK universities. Although students felt prepared in competencies in infection prevention and control, patient-centred care and interprofessional collaborative practice, they felt less prepared in competencies in which microbiological knowledge, prescribing and its effect on antimicrobial stewardship is required. Problem-based learning, activities in the clinical setting and face-to-face teaching were identified as the preferred modes of education delivery. Those who had shared antimicrobial stewardship teaching with students from other professions reported the benefits to include …

Charismatic Leadership And Vulnerability: A Comprehensive Study Of Cult Dynamics, Danielle Santana Denrich Apr 2024

Charismatic Leadership And Vulnerability: A Comprehensive Study Of Cult Dynamics, Danielle Santana Denrich

Psychology Presentations

The term "cult" has various definitions in academic discourse, including religious or quasi-religious groups and small, ideologically aligned communities. This paper explores the complexity of the term, its alternative labels, and the influence of media portrayal on public perception. It examines cult leaders' attributes, focusing on the "dark triad" personality traits—narcissism, machiavellianism, and psychopathy—and their manifestation in charismatic leaders. The functionality of cults is scrutinized, highlighting their appeal as a familial structure and promises of intellectual, spiritual, and political power. However, the darker side of cult functionality involves manipulative recruitment tactics and thought-stopping techniques. Additionally, the paper examines susceptibility to …

Financial Exclusion, Gender, And The Lure Of Boko Haram (Chapter From Gender-Responsive Budgeting In Africa: Access And Future Measures), Vesna Markovic, Sven Botha

Justice, Law, and Public Safety Studies Department Faculty Books/Book Chapters

There is a large disparity in financial inclusiveness for those people living in northern Nigeria in contrast to those living in southern Nigeria. According to a 2019 report by the Central Bank of Nigeria and Enhancing Financial Innovation and Access (EFInA), Nigeria has more people living in extreme poverty than any other country in the world. Access to education and lower levels of income all contribute to the lack of financial inclusion for both men and women in the North, but particularly for women. These gender barriers have acted as an enabler for the recruitment of women into the Boko …

How Witnessing Domestic Violence Affects The Future Of Children: An Exploratory Study, Victoria Cleckler Apr 2024

How Witnessing Domestic Violence Affects The Future Of Children: An Exploratory Study, Victoria Cleckler

Honors Theses

Domestic violence (DV), also known as Intimate Partner Violence (IPV), is a widespread issue that affects many people, families, and communities, with one in four women and one in nine men falling victim to domestic violence each year in the United States. However, these statistics only consider what has actually been reported. More than 44% of domestic violence cases go unreported each year. It can be inferred that a drastic number of children are also affected. Children who witness domestic violence are indirect victims of DV, as they experience psychological and emotional turmoil simply by witnessing the abuse. However, there …

Can Volunteer Fire Companies Improve Recruiting?, David T. Button Apr 2024

Can Volunteer Fire Companies Improve Recruiting?, David T. Button

Helm's School of Government Conference - 2021-2024

The accelerating inability of volunteer fire departments to attract new recruits presents the public sector with both above and below-the-line costs. Finding replacements for members aging out is the single greatest challenge that volunteer departments face. If this problem persists, the cost of replacing volunteers with paid staff would have a significant and negative impact on the tax base. Pay and benefits for professional staff (as well as capital costs associated with this conversion) would cause property taxes to escalate significantly in communities where volunteers have historically managed emergencies. Much research has been conducted in an attempt to determine how …

Smart Decarceration In The U.S And Our Communities, Brooke Freeland, Andrea Dehler, Jessica Rojas, Ethan Thompson, Emily Seaberg

Student Academic Conference

The rate of incarceration in the United States is one of the highest in the world and frequently affects members of vulnerable populations. The ineffectiveness of incarceration can be displayed by the following statement, “Prisoners often carry additional deficits of drug and alcohol addictions, mental and physical illnesses, and lack of work preparation or experience” (n.d.). In response, The Grand Challenges for Social Work poses smart decarceration as one solution to address high rates of incarceration. Our findings reveal the effects of decarceration policies on incarcerated persons and the community, as well as the effects of how resources are allocated. …

Interventions To Modify Negative Perceptions Of The Need For Behavioral Health Care For African American Patients, Tiffany Jones Apr 2024

Interventions To Modify Negative Perceptions Of The Need For Behavioral Health Care For African American Patients, Tiffany Jones

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Background: African Americans underutilized mental health care services, compared to other population groups, in the past decades. While African Americans have the same mental health needs and rates of mental health diagnosis as other races, for some groups, there are additional cultural or environmental factors that create additional barriers to utilizing care (Alang, 2019). Methods: This project will be a cross-sectional study using an online survey of behavioral health practitioners. Results: Respondents were predominantly females (69%) and African Americans (69%). Their work medical specialties included: licensed counseling social workers and clinical social workers, mental health therapists, and psychiatrists. The average …

Ensure Healthy Development For Youth, Myrla Villa, Roseline Nehlar, Victoria Sharp, Audrey Welle, Kelly Zak Apr 2024

Ensure Healthy Development For Youth, Myrla Villa, Roseline Nehlar, Victoria Sharp, Audrey Welle, Kelly Zak

Student Academic Conference

Mental health-related concerns for youth continue to rise in the United States. Currently 20% of youth between ages 3 to 17 deal with behavioral health-related issues. These issues can have long-lasting impacts on various aspects of a youth's life. Public policies have historically focused on treating these issues after they have been identified, resulting in high costs for young people, families, and communities. To tackle this issue, policies should support universal preventive interventions to raise awareness about mental health needs, thereby removing barriers for youths seeking treatment.
