In the United States, smoking rates increase with greater acculturation among Mexican-origin women, but not among men. Conversely, greater acculturation is associated with higher likelihood of quitting among Mexican-origin men who smoke, but not among women who smoke. Long-standing speculation is that adoption of smoking social norms in the U.S. that are less restrictive for women and more restrictive for men compared to smoking social norms in Mexico may account for these patterns. However, it is unknown whether persons who smoke actually perceive such differential norms. The current study characterized smoking social norms in the U.S. and Mexico among Spanish-speaking …

Introduction: Clinical assessment in emergency departments (EDs) for possible acute myocardial infarction (AMI) requires at least one cardiac troponin (cTn) blood test. The turn-around time from blood draw to posting results in the clinical portal for central laboratory analysers is ~1-2 hours. New generation, high-sensitivity, point-of-care cardiac troponin I (POC-cTnI) assays use whole blood on a bedside (or near bedside) analyser that provides a rapid (8 min) result. This may expedite clinical decision-making and reduce length of stay. Our purpose is to determine if utilisation of a POC-cTnI testing reduces ED length of stay. We also aim to establish an …

Does Suicide Prevention Knowledge Predict Suicide Prevention Behaviors Among Hope Squad Members?, Angie S. Bledsoe
Theses and Dissertations
This was one of the first studies that looked at the effect that suicide prevention knowledge acquired through suicide prevention training (QPR training and Hope Squad curriculum) may have on suicide prevention behaviors (gatekeeping behaviors) in an adolescent population (Hope Squad members). Additionally, this study looked at how Hope Squad members' intent to intervene may mediate the relationship between suicide prevention knowledge and suicide prevention behaviors. The current study found that on average Hope Squad members' suicide prevention knowledge, gatekeeping behaviors, and intent to intervene increased from prior to starting the Hope Squad program's curriculum to the end of the …

The Internet of Things revolutionizes parking systems and efficiently identifies available spots to reduce search time, traffic congestion, and accidents. With the increasing number of vehicles driven by visitors and residents in the City of Baguio, parking accommodation has become insufficient. Although Internet-of-things has shown its benefits to other communities, its functionality in the City of Baguio remains unclear. To promote sustainable and effective urban transportation, the suggested solution of an IoT-based parking system addresses Baguio City's parking issues. The significance of this study lies in its ability to reduce time spent looking for parking areas while providing recommendations for …

The Significance Of Nyerere’S African Socialism Today: Embracing ‘Utu’ For Promoting Good Governance, Eric Clement Mgalula
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
This paper examines the enduring application of Nyerere’s African socialism, focusing on ‘utu’ (humanness) as a transformative principle for governance. By emphasizing values such as gender equality, rule of law, and accountability rooted in Bantu traditions, the study positions ‘utu’ as essential for fostering justice and ethical leadership. Utilizing a library-based research methodology, it critically analyses secondary literature and employs philosophical analysis and deductive reasoning to evaluate Nyerere’s ideology. The research critiques the limited success of neoliberal reforms in Africa. Critics linking African socialism’s shortcomings to ideological flaws are challenged with evidence highlighting external factors like global economic shifts and …

Who Gets To Decolonize: A Reflection On The Importance Of Positionality In The Decolonization Of Digital Learning Spaces And Learning Design, Rebecca Y. Bayeck, Tutaleni Iita Asino
Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications
Decolonization as a term and concept gained prominence in the 20th century as new nations emerged from the cessation of the global colonial project which primarily saw European countries occupying different parts of the world. In modern times, interests in decolonization have taken different forms, particularly in learning design and digital learning spaces. In the digital space, researchers mainly suggest introducing indigenous perspectives and cultural lenses in the design of digital learning environments and the design of emerging technologies that embed indigenous perspectives (Nede, 2023). This reflexive essay discusses the importance of positionality in digital learning spaces and learning/instructional design. …

Replication Study On Ostracism And Self-Isolation The Role Of Shame And Guilt, Zhi Quan Lim
Theses and Dissertations
This study explores the ostracism and solitude-seeking link by conceptually replicating the two studies (Ren et al., 2016; 2022) using different methods of inducing the feeling of being ostracized in the participants. In this study, I asked participants to recall a memory of being ostracized to induce the feeling of being ostracized. I am also interested in if shame and guilt mediate this connection. One hundred and thirty-two participants took part in the study. I divided the participants into two groups (the ostracized group and the control group). After finishing the first task, the participants took a modified version of …

Communicators often find it challenging to prioritize the public and manage their comments during risk communication. This study explored the effects of comments as interactivity cues on news diffusion while considering situational factors under the framework of the Situational Theory of Problem Solving in the context of the US-China trade conflict. For this purpose, the researchers conducted an experiment to investigate the effects of interactivity cues and public segmentations on news sharing. The findings suggest that comments elicit different news-sharing behaviors among different segments of the public. The aware public shares more news than the activists/active public who are more …

Increasing Pre-Service Teachers' Awareness Of Children Experiencing Homelessness, Rachael Waller, Melissa Sullivan-Walker
Increasing Pre-Service Teachers' Awareness Of Children Experiencing Homelessness, Rachael Waller, Melissa Sullivan-Walker
The Reading Professor
As homelessness becomes a growing issue in the United States, children experiencing homelessness can be educationally at risk. However, teachers can make a significant difference for these children. In this study, we sought to increase empathy and understanding for children experiencing homelessness for the pre-service teachers whom we teach. Using the windows, mirrors and sliding glass doors framework (Bishop, 1990), we implemented an activity in which pre-service teachers read and discussed children's books portraying different types of homelessness. This paper will articulate how students made connections with the texts and deepened their understanding and empathy about children experiencing homelessness.
