Community Reintegration After A Psychiatric Hospitalization: Perceptions Of Psychiatric Facility Providers, Paige Radtke Aug 2024

Community Reintegration After A Psychiatric Hospitalization: Perceptions Of Psychiatric Facility Providers, Paige Radtke

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Reintegrating into the community after a psychiatric hospitalization can be a daunting task, and one that patients with serious and persistent mental illness (SPMI) may experience multiple times throughout their lifetime. While research has been conducted demonstrating the barriers to successful community reintegration after a psychiatric hospitalization, a better understanding of the lived experiences of inpatient social workers regarding the discharge process is necessary to continue to decrease the risk of re-hospitalization. The purpose of the study was to identify the perceived elements necessary to establish successful discharge plans such that patients with SPMI are less likely to experience subsequent …

First-Year Experiences Of Lgbtq+ Students: Belongingness, Resilience, And Utilization Of Resources On Campus, Sarina Sauceda

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Entering college brings independence; however, it also presents new challenges. Navigating young adulthood, with academic/social pressures, makes the first-year increasingly difficult (Alessi et al., 2017). LGBTQ+ students are at heightened risk of negative mental health outcomes (e.g., increased depression/anxiety levels; Alessi et al., 2017; Thacker Darrow et al., 2022). For LGBTQ+ students, the first-year of college poses additional issues, such as discrimination or lack of belonging (Thacker Darrow et al., 2022; Hood et al., 2018). Overall, there is little research of this population, and less is known about specifically the first-year. It is important to understand those experiences, so that …

Informed Consent Document Delivery: Effects On Appalachian Caregivers' Comprehension, Trust In Researchers, And Willingness To Participate, Tess A. Simpson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether altering an informed consent document (ICD), in ways that either promote or inhibit accessibility, would affect potential participants’ willingness to participate in a child development laboratory-based study. Specifically, I was interested in assessing the willingness to participate of historically underrepresented groups, especially Appalachian caregiver-child dyads. I altered three parameters of a previously approved and employed ICD to explore whether these parameters impacted Appalachian caregivers’ comprehension of the study, willingness to participate, and trust in the researchers. The manipulated parameters included reading level, utilization of illustrative pictures, and inclusion of text-to-speech …

The Lived Experiences Of African Canadian Custodial Caregivers Of Minors With A Diagnosis Of Autism Spectrum Disorder In Alberta, Canada, Angelina Abong Atsimbom

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) encompasses a broad range of symptoms, skills, impairments, or disability. It is characterized by a persistent deficit in group communication and social interaction, limited behaviors such as walking, and less interest in interacting with others and participating in social events. Existing studies suggest that there are many unique challenges associated with caring for a child with ASD. Despite growing evidence of an increase in diagnosis and greater awareness of the challenges associated with caring for children on the autism spectrum, there remains a gap in the research about the unique experiences of custodial caregivers of minors …

The Educational, Living, And Social Conditions Of Farmworker Families Residing In A California Migrant Housing Center, Anna Santana

Social Justice in Educational Leadership EdD Dissertations

Every year, thousands of agricultural workers and their families migrate across states and countries, playing a vital role in global food production, especially in California, home to the largest population of farmworkers in the U.S. Historically, migrant families lived in inadequate housing, but today the state offers 24 seasonal rental housing centers with approximately 1,883 units across 15 counties. However, this type of subsidized housing requires that families live outside a 50-mile radius from these centers for at least three months during the off-season, often forcing children to change schools multiple times a year, disrupting their education. This study explores …

Mind-Body Bridging (Mbb) Techniques And Emotional Regulation In Political Discourse And Confidence In Political Talk, Joseph Ofori Acheampong

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

In today's politically divided landscape, conversations across political lines can often provoke intense feelings of anger and anxiety, making productive dialogue difficult. This polarization not only dampens the quality of public discourse but also affects individual emotional well-being and the broader societal cohesion. This study explores a novel approach to alleviating the negative emotional effects caused by political polarization, using Mind-Body Bridging (MBB) techniques. It specifically targets emotional regulation- how we control and manage our feelings- during political discussions, without attempting to change participants' political beliefs. The study involved participants from Utah State University setting who engaged in MBB training. …

The Invisible Co-Afflicted: Caregivers Of Rectal Cancer Survivors, Qi Chen Aug 2024

The Invisible Co-Afflicted: Caregivers Of Rectal Cancer Survivors, Qi Chen

Publications and Research

Formal survivorship care after successful rectal cancer treatment is lacking, and this burden falls to caregivers. Caregivers, many of whom have no healthcare training, are asked to take on management of bowel function difficulties, ostomy care, while providing tangible, emotional, and financial support for rectal cancer survivors. The rise of young-onset rectal cancer also adds new survivorship care needs, such as family planning and returning to workplace, which compounds existing caregiver responsibilities and burdens.
