What Can We Do? An Exploratory Study On Undergraduate Student Climate Change Perceptions, Walker J. Skeeter, Jacob R. Reed, Jordan R. Cissell, Riffat Islam, David J. Keellings
The Geographical Bulletin
A survey was conducted to evaluate the perceptions of undergraduate students enrolled in an introductory atmospheric processes course towards various climate change related topics, such as the validity of, and the scientific consensus surrounding climate change. Further questions sought information regarding student knowledge of climate change, such as when they were first exposed to the science, and their methods of seeking out information regarding climate change. This study additionally seeks to identify sectors of the human and natural world that students feel climate change negatively affects. Results indicate that students desire information about mitigation strategies, regardless of whether they believe …

Can An Equine-Assisted Learning Course Improve Emotional Intelligence In Undergraduate Students?, Danielle Y. Clark, Julia M. Mack, Kenneth G. Mccurdy
People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice
Background: Emotional intelligence, a construct that many experts consider an essential component of life success, is moving in a concerning direction among American college students. Equine-assisted interventions may be an innovative modality for influencing these skills. Purpose: This study explores the effectiveness of a 15-week equine-assisted experiential learning course on emotional intelligence among undergraduate college students. Methodology/Approach: The intervention group consisted of 18 students who participated in a three-credit psychology course entitled Horses for Interpersonal Skills, which involved classroom instruction and an equine-assisted learning (EAL) component. This group was compared to a no intervention sample of 26 students enrolled in …

Abstract
Background: In the United States, 10-20% of pregnant women reported using drugs during pregnancy. Current recommendations are to screen for drug use in all patients and provide a brief intervention and referral to treatment. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to evaluate the impact of implementing a standardized screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment (SBIRT) protocol for first-trimester pregnant patients who are seen in the obstetrical department.
Methods: The Tobacco, Alcohol, Prescription Medication, and Other Substance Use (TAPS) screening tool was administered to first-trimester pregnant women, 13-45 years of age, seen in the obstetrical department from …
Employee Retention In Child Welfare, Stormie Hayes
Employee Retention In Child Welfare, Stormie Hayes
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Low employee retention rates have been a persistent issue in a county department within a government agency located in the upstate of South Carolina. The State of South Carolina attempted to alleviate the turnover rate within the state’s social service offices by increasing case managers’ annual salaries. Although the increase in salary was an incentive, it failed to address the root of the low retention problem. The purpose of the study was to learn strategies that a child welfare office can utilize to retain child welfare staff. The issue-based strategic model was utilized as the conceptual framework which allows the …

Child Protective Services Workers' Decision Making And Risk Management, Heath Nicholas Landress
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The role of those who work in child protective services (CPS) is to ensure children's safety and well-being. This study explored eight CPS professionals’ perceptions of risk assessment in child protection cases and their ideas of barriers and facilitators they encountered in their decision-making in the field. Through a force field analysis, using Lewin's change theory, content analysis of narrative data collected using open ended surveys revealed child welfare professionals’ experiences with the driving and restraining forces in child risk assessment. Findings highlighted continuing needs in the areas of training, cultural contexts, and ways for better collaboration and information to …
The Economic Contributions Of Awqāf In Türkiye, Ozan Maraşlı, Monzer Kahf
The Economic Contributions Of Awqāf In Türkiye, Ozan Maraşlı, Monzer Kahf
Journal of King Abdulaziz University: Islamic Economics
Waqf holds profound significance, extending beyond its economic role, rooted in the concept of qurbah—seeking closeness to Allah Ta’ālā. It embodies perpetual worship ('ibādah) dedicated to serving the needy and virtuous causes while maintaining a vital nexus with the economy as a charitable endeavor for producing added value. This study descriptively explores this nexus by analyzing the Turkish awqāf sector and its economic contributions. In Türkiye, the awqāf SECTOR comprises fused (mazbût), annexed (mülhak), new (yeni), community (cemaat), and state awqāf, along with corporate awqāf, waqf universities, and waqf healthcare institutions. Fused and annexed awqāf represent the Ottoman waqf tradition, …

Reflecting On Reflexivity In Realist Evaluation: A Call To Action, John Downey, Sarah Rybczynska-Bunt
Reflecting On Reflexivity In Realist Evaluation: A Call To Action, John Downey, Sarah Rybczynska-Bunt
School of Nursing and Midwifery
Realist evaluation is increasingly utilised across disciplines due to the value of identifying which mechanisms may explain how, and why, particular outcomes are generated in specific contexts. In theory, realist evaluation provides a tangible way to analyse the inherent complexity in many pressing societal challenges. Realist evaluation encourages a mixed methods approach and choosing a suite of methods that are most relevant within a specific project. Yet, navigating a plurality of methods with abstract philosophical concepts brings operational challenges such that, further methodological guidance is needed. Research processes can be opaque and although the relativist epistemology in realist evaluation is …

Detachment from nature is contributing to the environmental crisis and reversing this trend requires detailed monitoring and targeted interventions to reconnect people to nature. Most tools measuring nature exposure and attachment were developed in high-income countries and little is known about their robustness across national and linguistic groups. Therefore, we used data from the Body Image in Nature Survey to assess measurement invariance of the Nature Exposure Scale (NES) and the Connectedness to Nature Scale (CNS) across 65 nations, 40 languages, gender identities, and age groups (N = 56,968). While multi-group confirmatory factor analysis (MG-CFA) of the NES supported …

Political Articulation Of Gus Mus’ Asceticism In Strengthening The Role Of Nu As A Moral Force In National Politics, Khoiron Khoiron, Hirshi Anadza, Abdul Wahid M
Jurnal Wacana Politik
This study reveals the practice of articulation of ascetic politics carried out by Gus Mus amidst the strong democratic regime that dictated the process of contestation of power at the NU Congress in 2015 in Jombang. The practice of articulation of asceticism is political, because he always changes his identity. As a subject, Gus Mus often changes positions, such as a kiai and a cultural figure. This position is called the subject position. This study explores the creation of a new identity in contemporary politics using Laclau’s articulation theory within a post-structuralist case study research design. Therefore, the main argument …
The Effects Of Social Isolation On People With Dementia And The Use Of Arts As Connection, Emily Olive
The Effects Of Social Isolation On People With Dementia And The Use Of Arts As Connection, Emily Olive
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
During the COVID-19 pandemic, many states issued quarantines and social isolation policies. While this impacted the well-being and mental health of everyone, it had an increased effect on the elderly population and, more specifically, those living with dementia. Social isolation has been shown to cause a quicker progression of dementia symptoms, increase anxiety and depressive symptoms, and worsen chronic health issues. Before the pandemic, research has agreed that a way to combat the progression of dementia and lower the symptoms is through socialization. A critical review of the literature found that the arts may be used to form connections between …

Monologue Writing And Psychodramatic Techniques With Adolescents Experiencing Suicidality, Justine Rea
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
The United States continues to face an ongoing youth mental health epidemic among children and adolescents, coinciding with an increase of suicidal behaviors among this developmental age group. Accessibility to culturally competent mental health support, addressing social barriers, and an increase in research to identify and respond to youth mental health needs are among recommendations provided by the Surgeon General. Currently, there is limited clarity on standards and best practices for treating suicidality across mental health sectors. As such, it’s necessary to explore additional means of support for adolescents experiencing suicidality within the individual therapy model. Thwarted belonging and sense …

Embracing The Courage To Teach: Undoing The Grade, J. C. Sheen, Gavin Munson, Julie Stevens, Sarah Tulane, Kevin Young
Empowering Teaching Excellence Conference
In the spirit of "The Courage to Teach," our panel will discuss our experiences with alternative approaches to student assessment that challenge the standard grading practices and their impact on learning environments. We will explore our reasons behind "undoing the grade" and our approaches to student assessment that empower both educators and learners. By undoing the traditional grading paradigm, we aim to cultivate a culture of authentic learning, where students are motivated by curiosity and growth rather than fear of evaluation.
Behind The Curtain: Recommendations For Neurodiversity Research, Andree Koehler
Behind The Curtain: Recommendations For Neurodiversity Research, Andree Koehler
The Qualitative Report
Researchers have explored neurodiversity in terms of gender, gender identity and expression, masking, and more, yet the focus is often on neurodiversity as synonymous with autism. There remains a challenge to expand the body of neurodiversity research that is broader than autism. In my article, neurodiversity will be discussed as an element of the broad human condition, rather than a singular state or condition of impairment isolated to a portion of the population to delineate the paradigm based on neurological variations from medical and social models. This paper was designed to offer a “how to” for conducting research into neurodiversity …

A Framework For Enterprise Resource Planning Systems In Non-Governmental Organisations In Zimbabwe, Florence Fungisai Sikweche, Theo Tsokota, Colletor Tendeukai Chipfumbu, Lucy Charity Sakala
African Conference on Information Systems and Technology
The fastest and most effective way for Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) to manage resources efficiently is to transform through introducing information systems (IS). However, it has been argued by several authors that Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems do not usually fit the requirements of organizations in developing countries because of the different business practices, and legal and government regulations. Hence, this study sought to establish a framework for ERP integration in NGOs in Zimbabwe. Interviews and observations were used for data collection. A sample of 15 employees was chosen, using purposeful sampling, from 13 NGOs located in Harare. Results showed that …

The Nexus Of Resistance And Neoliberalism In Social Work And Social Welfare: A Scoping Review, Kevin Cherry, Sandra Leotti
School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations
This study intervenes in a growing scholarly dialogue about neoliberalism in social work and social welfare by addressing the undertheorized concept of resistance. We conduct a scoping review of 54 articles published from 2008–2023 to answer two questions: how is resistance discussed in relation to neoliberalism, and what are the practice elements of resistance? Findings highlight resistance as a diverse phenomenon enacted in relation to context-specific manifestations of neoliberalism. A range of actors engage in resistance, including individual practitioners, social service organizations and collective action entities, among others. Resistance occurs across all scales of practice and takes many forms, from …

Returnees’ Perspectives Of The Adverse Impact Of Forced Displacement On Children, Itunu O. Ilesanmi, Jasmine D. Haynes, Florence O. Ogundimu
Returnees’ Perspectives Of The Adverse Impact Of Forced Displacement On Children, Itunu O. Ilesanmi, Jasmine D. Haynes, Florence O. Ogundimu
Faculty Publications
Conflict-related forced displacement, characterized by the experiences of witnessing violent acts, bombing, torture, separation, and the execution of family members, can severely and negatively impact a child’s social determinants of health (SDOH). These experiences are both direct and indirect forms of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), and urgent attention is needed to understand the impact of forced displacement on children, who are a vulnerable group, and to develop interventions for all systems that influence the child. This phenomenological qualitative study involved in-depth interviews based on the experiences of returnees (n = 20), who are parents of children who experienced forced displacement. …

Assessing Impacts Of A Hybrid Orientation On Counseling Students’ Self-Efficacy, Candice R. Clark, Arien K. Muzacz, April Lague
Journal of Technology in Counselor Education and Supervision
This manuscript presents results from a quantitative exploratory study of how a faculty-led hybrid orientation impacted the self-efficacy and readiness to engage in hybrid learning of incoming master’s students in a nationally-accredited counseling program in the U.S. Median difference analyses did not indicate that participants’ post-orientation scores differed significantly on the measures used to assess self-efficacy (i.e., CSES, PEU, LMSE). While participants’ self-efficacy ratings did not change significantly as a result of orientation activities, scores for 89% of participants increased or stayed the same. Implications for future research and for the preparation of graduate students in pre-professional programs with a …

Examining The Adjustment And Coping Trajectories In Healthy Siblings Of Children With Life-Threatening Conditions, Joanne Tay
Dissertations
Siblings of children with life-threatening conditions are often referred to as "forgotten" mourners as focus tends to be on the ill child and parents. With limited knowledge about siblings' experience, it is challenging to provide appropriate supports.
The purpose of this dissertation was to examine and expand current evidence about siblings' experiences to guide research and clinical practice.
