Addressing health disparities through community engagement and interprofessional partnerships is increasingly critical. However, learner-led approaches that integrate medical students, resident physicians, and social work students are not well-studied. We designed a learner-led, interprofessional, public health campaign for a majority Hispanic community, with the goals of building interprofessional leadership skills, engaging learners to address COVID-19 inequities, and disseminating lessons learned. Faculty and students from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Schools of Medicine and Social Work partnered with community leaders to pilot an interprofessional project supported by the American Association of Medical Colleges’ Nurturing Experiences for Tomorrow’s Community Leaders (AAMC …

Understanding The Barriers Of General Education Teachers Implementing Inclusive Practices, Sonya Garrette Woodfork
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The inclusion of students with disabilities has become more prevalent in general education classrooms advocating for children to be educated in the least restrictive environment. This participatory action research aimed to investigate the effects of general education teachers’ lack of sufficient preservice training and attitudes on learning outcomes for children with special needs placed in inclusive learning environments. The participatory action research took place on one elementary and one early childhood campus. Data collection methods took place via triangulation using data from interviews, journals, and surveys. There are many barriers to successfully implementing inclusion in general education classrooms. This study …

'Higher' Education: Incorporating Cannabis As Interdisciplinary Curricula, John W. Lipford, A. Scott Rood
'Higher' Education: Incorporating Cannabis As Interdisciplinary Curricula, John W. Lipford, A. Scott Rood
Journal of Tourism Insights
This paper details successful efforts undertaken, at a Midwest (U.S.) university to address the significant lack of cannabis-centered academics within U.S. higher education. The foci of this paper for interdisciplinary cannabis curricula at the subject university is three-fold: student-centered, industry-centered, and community-centered. The curricular innovation was designed, presented, and now implemented, in a form of stackable credentialling; through which students develop fundamental knowledge about cannabis (badge in ‘cannabis operations’), apply that knowledge in a holistic way to local regions (certificate in ‘cannabis & community planning’), and culminate their learning experience with advanced topics and experiential learning components via an academic …
Effectively Addressing Hospital-Acquired Pressure Injuries With A Multidisciplinary Approach, Nicki Roderman, Shandlie Wilcox, Andrew Beal
Effectively Addressing Hospital-Acquired Pressure Injuries With A Multidisciplinary Approach, Nicki Roderman, Shandlie Wilcox, Andrew Beal
HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine
Background
Hospital-acquired pressure injuries (HAPIs) result in patient harm, discomfort, and even death, with an estimated 2.5 million HAPIs occurring annually in the United States. These pressure injuries from prolonged pressure on the skin and deeper tissues cause reduced blood flow and the breakdown of skin and tissues, resulting in wounds. Additionally, these injuries contribute to longer hospital stays and increased health care costs. Hospitals have programs aimed at reducing HAPIs as well as ongoing surveillance to identify new trends early on. This ongoing monitoring revealed a trend early at our institution that HAPIs were 66% higher than the national …
Covid-19 And Access To Healthcare At The Crossing Of Race, Poverty, And Rurality, Shavonnie R. Carthens
Covid-19 And Access To Healthcare At The Crossing Of Race, Poverty, And Rurality, Shavonnie R. Carthens
Journal of Law and Health
Black Americans make up 7.7 percent of the rural population in the United States. During the COVID-19 pandemic many in this population found themselves at a unique intersection of inequity - being Black, poor, and residing in a rural area. Poverty is a known contributor to negative health outcomes and is a risk factor for death from coronavirus infection. The association between race and poverty, when examining infectivity and mortality rates of COVID-19, have disproportionately devastated Black Americans and other minorities. Further, research indicates the presence of a general “rural mortality penalty” wherein rural Black communities have higher death rates …

Forgiveness And Social Support As Protective Factors Of Post-Traumatic Stress Symptoms Among Women Victims Of Ipv, Gloryka Ednadita, Monika Danastri, Christina Ardelia, Kamelia Ramandha, Mellia Christia
Psychological Research on Urban Society
In Indonesia, most cases of violence against women occur as domestic and dating violence, that is, intimate partner violence or IPV. Such cases report relatively more prevalent, severe posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), but studies on protective factors are limited. Therefore, this study examined whether forgiveness and perceived social support among young women who have experienced IPV by former partners negatively predicted PTSS. We used the Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Checklist-5, the Heartland Forgiveness Scale, and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support. The study analyzed data from 60 young women (Mage= 22.4) who had experienced IPV that lasted an average of …

Visions in Leisure and Business
A critical review of selected sources helped develop a better perspective about successful models and points the direction to the needed future of technology for older adults. The diversity of selected approaches was identified in the different literature sources. There is not a consistent position on technology, but there is agreement that it must be individualized and progressively applied through pedagogical friendly approaches. This will greatly aid any technology now and in the future.

Preparing Students With Intellectual Disability For Science, Technology, Engineering, And Math Careers, Yewon Lee, Mariya T. Davis, Eric J. Lopez, Gulnoza Yakubova, Ingrid Cumming
All Faculty Scholarship (Archived)
Research indicates that outcomes for individuals with intellectual disability in post-secondary education (PSE), employment, and independent living lag in comparison to the general population. Students with disabilities, particularly those with intellectual disability, are underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers and face barriers in accessing STEM courses and career opportunities. Furthermore, students with intellectual disability are disproportionately affected by the impact of unemployment and underemployment and overall quality of life. Providing students with intellectual disability with opportunities for STEM instruction and access to STEM careers could help them with employment in the field. Therefore, the call exists for …

The study aims to evaluate the regulatory framework’s effectiveness in building trust, focusing on three key aspects: the potential recipients of altruistically shared data, the possibility of commercial use of such data, and the transparency of data processing activities. The findings suggest …

The Experience Of Young Adult Caregivers Of Patients With Left Ventricular Assist Devices (Lvads), Amy Emmarco
The Experience Of Young Adult Caregivers Of Patients With Left Ventricular Assist Devices (Lvads), Amy Emmarco
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Advanced heart failure is a serious diagnosis that is associated with limited options at the end stage of the disease. Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVADs) are mechanical circulatory support systems that can be used for patients with end stage heart failure. These devices are complex and require specialized training to manage. Visiting home care services are unable to provide support and the management responsibility falls solely on the patient and their designated caregiver. Young adults serve in this caregiving role and very little is known about their specific journey. The aim of the study was to understand the experience of …

Home And Community-Based Case Manager Job Satisfaction During The Covid-19 Public Health Emergency, Timothy Frederick Conroy
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
There is limited information on the impact on Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) case managers’ job satisfaction as COVID-19 policies altered the way their jobs were performed. Many HCBS case managers in the United States experience high levels of turnover and burnout, resulting in difficulty maintaining appropriate service levels. Public health emergency (PHE) policies used to limit exposure of high-risk community-based individuals to COVID-19 resulted in various adjustments to traditional job responsibilities. The purpose of this research was to qualitatively study the impact of HCBS policy changes on the job satisfaction of HCBS case managers prior to and throughout the …
