Some Contradictions Of The Welfare State: Revisited, Chris O'Ralaigh Jan 2025

Some Contradictions Of The Welfare State: Revisited, Chris O'Ralaigh

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

It is now 40 years since the publication of Claus Offe's classical paper, Some Contradictions of the Modern Welfare State. Much change has occurred to the form and content of welfare states over the intervening years, yet in addition to change, continuities are very much evident, and it is this constellation of developments – alongside anniversarial convenience – which has motivated a re-examination of Offe's seminal work on the contradictions of welfare states. This anniversary article re-introduces and provides a critique of the original paper before moving on to a historical comparison of the major political economic and societal differences …

Performance Methodologies In Suicide Prevention Research: Queerness, Colonization, And Co-Performative Witnessing In Indigenous Community, Antonia R. G. Alvarez

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Performance methodologies take many forms—performative writing, poetic transcription, and co-performative witnessing, to name only a few—and can be both process and product, differentiating and unifying a group between and across differences. As a social work researcher committed to decolonial, liberatory methodologies that make and bring meaning to the communities I work with, performance methodologies fill a gap that other qualitative research methods can only begin to approach. This project is an exploration in performance methodologies and Critical Suicidology through the lens of social work research, with a case study derived from a performance documenting suicide prevention research with Native Hawaiians. …

Providential Rescuers Or Collaborationist Traitors? Depictions Of Romania’S Jewish Center (Centrala Evreilor) And Its Leaders In Jewish Diaries, 1942-1944, Stefan Cristian Ionescu

History Faculty Books and Book Chapters

"During the Second World War, Nazi authorities appointed 'Jewish Councils' (Judenräte) to help with the administration of the non- ghettoized and ghettoized Jewish communities in regions occupied by Germany or in the German sphere of influence. Ghettoization was envisaged as an intermediary (and convenient) stage before the implementation of a 'final solution' to the so-called Jewish Question. During and especially after the war, many Jews criticized members of the Judenräte, the ghetto police, and prisoner functionaries as Nazi collaborators and traitors. After the defeat of Nazism, some of the surviving “Jewish Council” members were attacked, marginalized, or …

The Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS) is a widely used self-report measure of subjective well-being, but studies of its measurement invariance across a large number of nations remain limited. Here, we utilised the Body Image in Nature (BINS) dataset–with data collected between 2020 and 2022 –to assess measurement invariance of the SWLS across 65 nations, 40 languages, gender identities, and age groups (N = 56,968). All participants completed the SWLS under largely uniform conditions. Multi-group confirmatory factor analysis indicated that configural and metric invariance was upheld across all nations, languages, gender identities, and age groups, suggesting that the unidimensional …

Considering What Counts: Inside United States Child Maltreatment Statistics, Keith R. Johnson, Joel Best Jan 2025

Considering What Counts: Inside United States Child Maltreatment Statistics, Keith R. Johnson, Joel Best

Numeracy

The counting process which produces statistics is a human enterprise that reflects the needs and interests of the counters. This is clear in the case of the social problem of child abuse. Many different social groups and subprofessions are located in government bureaucracies organized to protect children and preserve families. Official statistics about how many children are abused (officially “maltreated”) vary markedly among the different states. The magnitude of the disparities among jurisdictions cannot be explained without changing one’s perspective about the nature of official counts. They come less from measuring child maltreatment than measuring the divergent ways that state …

A Spiritual Pilgrimage To A Celtic Homeland: Searching And Internalising In Grief From Stone To Sea. A Collaborative Autoethnography, Laura Lewis, Eunice Gorman Jan 2025

A Spiritual Pilgrimage To A Celtic Homeland: Searching And Internalising In Grief From Stone To Sea. A Collaborative Autoethnography, Laura Lewis, Eunice Gorman

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

This collaborative autoethnography poses the research question; How does one’s experience of grief and anticipatory grief mobilise pilgrimage journeys to ancestral homelands? Two theoretical constructs found in the academic literature related to grief and loss are explored for their influence on both authors’ respective pilgrimage journeys to the Celtic ancestral homeland of their deceased and ‘vanishing’ fathers in Wales and Ireland. The theoretical constructs explored through an extensive review of paternal personal documents of one author (Laura), revealed thematic ideas that could be best understood through an elaboration of the academic literature(s) that inform understandings of grief and bereavement. These …

Hold Fast The Rope Of God: Space, Authority, And Speech In Muslim Prison Narratives, Basit Kareem Iqbal, Walaa Quisay Jan 2025

Hold Fast The Rope Of God: Space, Authority, And Speech In Muslim Prison Narratives, Basit Kareem Iqbal, Walaa Quisay

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Scholarship about Muslims in prison has been overwhelmingly dominated by security studies’ radicalization thesis and by a superficial reading of incarcerated Muslims’ “religious resilience.” Such approaches caricature the force of Islam in prison and indeed in Muslim prison narratives. This essay draws on interviews with survivors of prisons in Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, and Syria in order to develop other terms for analysis. Across our textual and ethnographic engagements, we read for varied permutations of carceral space, formations of religious authority, and an intimate (witnessing) relation between speech and violence. Muslim prison narratives see a broad emphasis on the …

Examining Nationality, First Generation Status And Academic Identity Status As A Lens Into Student Achievement, Jennette Allen-Mccombs

Journal of Educational Research and Practice

This study investigates the relationship between academic identity statuses and academic achievement at a U.S. northeastern college where 55% of the population is first-generation students. Using Was and Isaacson’s (2008) Academic Identity Measure, I assessed four identity statuses (achieved, foreclosed, diffused, and moratorium) among 424 students. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that achieved identity status had the strongest positive effect on grade-point average (GPA), while diffused identity status showed the most significant negative impact. Additionally, birthplace and mother’s educational status emerged as significant demographic predictors of academic achievement. The findings suggest that students with foreclosed or diffused identities struggle with …

Beginning with the arrival of the first Protestant missionaries in the late 19th century, the study delves into their impact on Korean society by establishing schools and hospitals that introduced Western education and healthcare practices, challenging traditional Confucian norms and fostering a new intellectual and ideological landscape. These institutions became centers of modernity and nationalist ideologies, cultivating a generation of Korean leaders who played significant roles in the independence …

Occupational Hazard Of Policing: A Phenomenological Study Of Moral Injury Among Law Enforcement Officers, Harley J. Lenart

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The concept of moral injury is relatively new, and most of the attention has been aimed at military veterans. Moral injury is perpetrating, failing to prevent, bearing witness to, or learning about acts that transgress deeply held moral beliefs and expectations. While awareness has increased in recent years, research on moral injury among law enforcement officers is limited. On average, during a 20-year career, police officers are exposed to 700 critical incidents, while average citizens may witness two. Law enforcement officers struggle with job burnout, depression, and suicide. Most law enforcement mental health studies focus on Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), …
