Experiences Of Former Foster Youths With Learning Disabilities Who Transitioned Into Adulthood, Phyllis J. Phillips
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Foster youths with learning disabilities face numerous challenges as they transition out of care, including housing instability, unemployment, and mental health issues. Despite these barriers, research focusing on this specific population is limited. Guided by Taormina’s adult personal resilience theory, this qualitative case study explored the experiences and perceptions of former foster youths with learning disabilities to inform interventions and improve service delivery and policy improvements. The research questions addressed the experiences of former foster youths with learning disabilities transitioning out of care, the unique challenges associated with transitioning out of foster care as experienced by former foster youths with …

Blue Momma, Why Are You So Blue: A Trauma-Informed Theological Approach To Systematically Oppressed Black Mothers In Memphis, Tennessee, Valerie Houston
Doctor of Ministry
This dissertation discusses the effects of systemic oppression on the well-being of Black mothers in Memphis, Tennessee. It posits that systemic oppression causes trauma that negatively affects Black motherhood and familial stability. Research shows that maternal mental illness may negatively affect child development, behavior, and cognitive and socio-emotional development.3 Black literary history has revealed the importance of Black mothers for family development.4 It has shown how Black mothers used religion to support themselves emotionally, psychologically, and spiritually during times of travail.5 This work theorizes that a trauma-informed theological approach will liberate Black mothers in Memphis, Tennessee, from …

Navigating Gender Dynamics And Identity Formation In Online Mutual Support Communities: Insights From Participant Experiences, Naishuo Sun
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
The COVID-19 pandemic has driven individuals to seek support through online mutual support groups, which provide spaces for knowledge exchange, social support, and crisis management. While these groups are known to benefit mental health, little is understood about how gender shapes interactions and identity formation within them. This study explores gender dynamics, communication styles, and identity formation in online support groups during the pandemic, focusing on their role in challenging traditional gender norms and fostering inclusivity.

Discrimination is a social adversity that is linked to several age-related outcomes. However, the molecular drivers of these observations are poorly understood. Social adverse factors are associated with proinflammatory and interferon gene expression, but little is known about whether additional genes are associated with discrimination among both African American and White adults. In this study, we examined how perceived discrimination in African American and White adults was associated with genome-wide transcriptome differences using RNA sequencing. Perceived discrimination was measured based on responses to self-reported lifetime discrimination and racial discrimination. Differential gene expression and pathway analysis were conducted in a cohort …

Parallel Journeys: Supporting Wounded Healers In Counselor Education, Susannah C. Coaston
Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
Much has been written about the motivations for wounded healers to pursue work in the helping professions. Those with painful life experiences can have a unique ability to understand the pain of others, and through their recovery, they may gain insight and understanding to benefit others. The counselor development process can be fraught with challenges that may have a detrimental impact on wounded healers. As such, counselor educators can benefit from amending their approaches to ensure that wounded healers gain the skills necessary to support their mental health and well-being, effectiveness, and personal and professional development. This article introduces a …

Trauma-Informed Bilingual Counselor Education: Factors To Guide Professional Mental Health Training With Spanish-Speaking Students, Fernando Estrada, Miguel A. Arana
Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
Latine immigrants confront various forms of violence that increases their risk for traumatic stress and post-traumatic stress disorder. There is a need to advance the training of counselors who can work with Spanish-speaking clients exposed to trauma. The goal of this study was to articulate a literature-based conceptualization of trauma-informed bilingual counselor education. The results of a content analysis facilitated a synthesis of the relevant scholarship that highlighted four main facets: (i) integrative translanguage pedagogy, (ii) immigrant trauma exposure and reaction, (iii) culturally responsive socio-emotional interventions, and (iv) bilingual supervisory alliance. These factors can help guide professional graduate training. Implications …

Screening, Brief Intervention, And Referral To Treatment (Sbirt) Model In Counselor Preparation, Everette Coffman, Jacqueline Swank, Sondra Smith
Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
As rates of substance abuse rise in the U.S., a treatment gap persists in the provision of prevention and intervention counseling services. Improving training in substance use treatment for counselors-in-preparation who provide early prevention and intervention across school and clinical settings may help fill the void in access to services. To meet this need, we developed an online multidisciplinary SBIRT curriculum for our university’s counselor education program, including mental health counselors, marriage and family therapists, and school counselors. The five-module training prepares graduate students at a basic competency level through an integrative approach involving online instructional pedagogy. This manuscript outlines …

Overcoming Barriers And Infusing Inclusive Teaching Practices In Counseling Programs, Ash Pitts, Kassie R. Terrell, Lena Salpietro, Hanadi Y. Hamadi
Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
Counselor educators are responsible for promoting inclusive practices within educational institutions and the counseling field. Inclusive teaching promotes equity in education through a commitment to social justice in the classroom. However, many professional organizations fail to define inclusive andragogy and provide little guidance for counselor educators on how to implement these practices within their training programs. Thus, many educators struggle with personal and institutional barriers, as well as limited guidance on effectively implementing inclusive teaching practices. This quantitative study (N=129) explores barriers counselor educators face in infusing inclusive teaching practices, highlights ways to overcome those barriers, and provides …

OBJECTIVE: Transportation barriers can lead to delays in care and suboptimal treatment. Our objective was to assess the utilization of a novel transportation pilot intervention in gynecologic oncology.
METHODS: Since May 2022, we have provided donor-funded transportation to patients receiving gynecologic cancer treatment at 5 University of Pennsylvania practices. Patients are screened for transportation barriers at first visit and re-screened during care. Patients who screen positive are referred to the intervention, a HIPAA-compliant ride-sharing service. There are no income or insurance restrictions; distance was limited to 25 miles. We report descriptive statistics on ride completion, distance traveled, and cost.

Lived Experiences Of Police Use Of Force In Western Utah, Kenny Augustin
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The use of force by police officers toward African Americans has been a tense subject in the United States Although statutory law grants the police officers the right to use force, the level and the type of force used by police officers can be seen as problematic. In this study, the lived experiences of African Americans and police officers’ use of force were explored. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore whether the lived experiences of African Americans differ from police officers concerning the use of force in Utah and how fear, trust, and confidence influenced behaviors. Relationship Between Self-Silencing And Self-Neglect Behaviors And Disordered Eating And Stigma Toward Seeking Behavioral Health Support Among Black Women Who Adopt The Superwoman Schema, Veanda Hemphill
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Self-silencing and self-neglect behaviors, key dimensions of the superwoman schema (SWS), function as protective coping mechanisms in response to psychosocial stressors. However, these behaviors often perpetuate self-sacrifice, leading to an increased risk of physical and mental health decline. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine the relationship between self-silencing and self-neglect behaviors (independent variables) and disordered eating and stigma toward seeking support from behavioral health services (dependent variables) among Black women who adopt the SWS. The theoretical and conceptual frameworks of silencing the self and intersectionality guided this study. The 78 participants who self-identified as Black and …

Staff Education To Increase Substance Use Screening And Treatment For Adolescents In An Outpatient Primary Care Mental Health Facility, Surekha Gorantla
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This quality improvement staff education DNP project addressed the practice issue relating to adolescent substance abuse in the project mental health facility. The facility does not have a uniform process for addressing this problem. Follow-up care for adolescents treated in the clinic is a challenge because each provider uses a screening tool of their preference, creating inconsistencies in care and missed care opportunities. Therefore, identifying, reducing, and preventing the negative consequences related to adolescent substance abuse in this clinical setting is vital and needs to be prioritized. I developed and implemented a staff education program using screening, brief intervention, and …

Assessing Psychologists’ Clinical Knowledge Of Geriatric Depression: A Validation Study Of The Later Life Depression Knowledge Questionnaire, Abigail J. Laine
Assessing Psychologists’ Clinical Knowledge Of Geriatric Depression: A Validation Study Of The Later Life Depression Knowledge Questionnaire, Abigail J. Laine
Dissertations
Because the US population is rapidly aging, generalist clinicians will increasingly be called upon to provide mental health services to older adults. Unfortunately, most generalist clinicians do not possess the specialized knowledge to provide clinical services to this population and will require training. Professional training efforts are currently hindered by the lack of psychometrically supported scales of clinical disorders specific to aging. Without such scales, it is difficult to evaluate the impact of continuing education programs. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the psychometric properties and scale dimensionality of the Later Life Depression Knowledge Questionnaire (LLD-KQ), a …

Inclusive Leadership Ideology In Crisis Management: A Case Study Analysis On Serving The Homeless During Covid-19, Hee Soun Jang, Yu Shi, Lisa Dicke, Laura Keyes
Journal of Ideology
A core value and ethical tenet of public administration is to ensure the protection and care of the most vulnerable in the community. This research shows that inclusive leadership ideology among public managers can actively engage them in using responsive strategies that respect marginalized groups' diverse cultures, languages, identities, and special needs. Using interviews of homeless-serving nonprofit leaders during the early part of the COVID-19 pandemic, our research demonstrates how leaders navigated critical decision-making in response to the unique service needs of those who were unsheltered and experiencing homelessness. The D-A-I-C model (Shi et al., 2020) serves as a framework …
