  • However, other research indicates that poorly maintained or isolated green spaces may provide opportunities for criminal activity.
  • Understanding these patterns is essential for designing safer cities.

Californians’ Perceptions Of The Causes Of Homelessness And Potential Policy Solutions, Sophie G. Srivastava, Benjamin D. Rosenberg, Vincent Berardi

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

Introduction

This study examines whether residents’ perceptions of the causes of homelessness and preferred policy solutions are associated with homeless-related behaviors and opinions, and whether such perceptions are attributed to internal or external factors.

Methods

California residents (N = 371) completed a survey and an exploratory factor analysis was conducted, which identified subscales of the perceived causes, preferred policy solutions, opinions, and behaviors. We used MANCOVA to examine which sociodemographic characteristics were associated with each subscale, and multiple regressions to assess relationships among subscales.

Results

As predicted by attribution theory, internal causes (e.g. lack of ambition) were positively associated …

Co-Designing A Web-Based And Tablet App To Evaluate Clinical Outcomes Of Early Psychosis Service Users In A Learning Health Care Network: User-Centered Design Workshop And Pilot Study, Kathleen E Burch, Adam B Wilcox, Et Al. Apr 2025

Co-Designing A Web-Based And Tablet App To Evaluate Clinical Outcomes Of Early Psychosis Service Users In A Learning Health Care Network: User-Centered Design Workshop And Pilot Study, Kathleen E Burch, Adam B Wilcox, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND: The Early Psychosis Intervention Network of California project, a learning health care network of California early psychosis intervention (EPI) programs, prioritized incorporation of community partner feedback while designing its eHealth app, Beehive. Though eHealth apps can support learning health care network data collection aims, low user acceptance or adoption can pose barriers to successful implementation. Adopting user-centered design (UCD) approaches, such as incorporation of user feedback, prototyping, iterative design, and continuous evaluation, can mitigate these potential barriers.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to use UCD during development of a data collection and data visualization web-based and tablet app, Beehive, to promote …

This was a great opportunity to work in the community and to learn how to better work with younger kids. For this past school year I worked for an after-school program at Summit Elementary doing a variety of educational activities. We were able to invite several different organizations to help introduce the kids to new technologies such as drones and coded remote-control cars. This helps kids to think creatively and give them opportunities to find their passion for a potential future career.

Access To Special Education Support For Rural Areas, Annamarie Mallory, Zayne Smith, Sam Rohrssen

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

Across the globe, students need more individualized education. 750 of the 1.1 million learners in compulsory schools in Sweden attend state-run special schools, and 14,400 attend compulsory schools for learners with intellectual disabilities. Special education, on top of many other issues, is a significant reason for rural schools’ struggling to provide quality education for their students who have learning disabilities. Special Education in the United States and Sweden is often overlooked. In the United States, the number of unqualified teachers in rural areas equals 35%, with 11.4% being special educators. This paper will discuss the most appropriate interventions that provide …

Prison Environment And Conditions Affect Recidivism Rates — Norway And South Africa, Hayes Breitbach, Abby Horstmann, Gus Beirman

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

Harsh prison conditions and lack of rehabilitation and reintegration programs in South African prisons reflect the high recidivism rates in the country. South African prisoners are subject to inhumane conditions such as overcrowding and health concerns, violations of human rights, and are stripped of their dignity. Paired with social stigma against those who have been incarcerated, these inhumane conditions lead to poor reintegration and higher recidivism rates. This research project advocates for prison reform focusing on rehabilitation, reintegration, and improved facility conditions. There are multiple examples of competent and humane prisons in the world, such as Norway’s correctional institutions, which …

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

Globally, 1 in every 3 women has experienced intimate partner violence (IPV), and the impact of this prevalent issue extends beyond the boundaries of developed and underdeveloped nations. In the United States, 22% of women have endured IPV, while in New Zealand, this figure stands at 24%. Despite the availability of national resources, frameworks adopted by developed countries are presumed to provide effective interventions through their judicial systems and policies. However, judicial injustices frequently allow perpetrators to persist in their violent behaviors without facing substantial consequences. Measures such as restraining orders or no-contact orders often fail to deter offenders effectively. …

"Anything And Everything:" An Analysis Of Role Ambiguity In Pennsylvania School Social Work, Jennifer L. Hoffa Apr 2025

"Anything And Everything:" An Analysis Of Role Ambiguity In Pennsylvania School Social Work, Jennifer L. Hoffa

Social Work Doctoral Dissertations

For the past 100 years, since the inception of school social work, a comprehensive list of the duties of social workers in schools has remained intangible; thus, the professional identity of school social workers (SSWs) has not been well-defined. An ambiguous professional identity gives rise to a lack of legitimacy, role confusion, and inconsistency in responsibilities faced by current SSWs employed in a public-school setting. A comprehensive understanding of how SSWs function, both in theory and in practice, is essential to producing social workers who are qualified, competent, and equipped to support students. This study utilizes quantitative methods to investigate …
