The Interaction Between Parenting Styles, College Adjustment, And Decision Making In Undergraduate Freshman And Sophomores, Taylor Phillips
The Interaction Between Parenting Styles, College Adjustment, And Decision Making In Undergraduate Freshman And Sophomores, Taylor Phillips
Honors Theses
Although considerable research has investigated how parenting styles impact child development, little is known about how parenting styles correlate with young adults’ adjustment to college. Parenting styles children are raised with may impact the development of skills such as resilience, problem-solving, and emotional regulation that influence how they react to difficult life transitions. Parenting styles may also impact a person’s decision making, including in situations involving self-control. Thus, the goal of this study was to investigate the relationship between parenting style, college adjustment, and self-control. This study used the Parenting Style and Dimension Questionnaire- Short Version, the Student Adaption to …

Promoting Social Inclusion Through Sport: A Case Study Of Uyghur Youth In China, Hongxin Li, Yunchao Bai, John Nauright
Faculty Publications
This study examines the role of sports as a means of promoting social inclusion among Uyghur youth in China, drawing upon social inclusion theory. Utilizing a qualitative case study methodology, we explored the perspectives of Uyghur youth athletes to gain insight into the challenges they face in achieving social inclusion without feeling “othered” or excluded. Data analysis followed an inductive grounded theory approach, identifying first‐order concepts, second‐order themes, and aggregate theoretical dimensions. Our findings reveal that social inclusion of Uyghur youth through sports participation is influenced by multiple factors, including language barriers, stereotypes, cultural differences, high expectations, and government policies. …

Central Habits Of Highly Effective Tutors: Hospitable Practice, Rhetorical Listening, And Emotional Validation In The Writing Center, Edward A. English
The Writing Center Journal
This article explores hospitality as a theoretical framework for valuing emotional engagement and rhetorical listening in writing center consultations, challenging traditional views that prioritize rationality and detachment. Anchored in a university writing center, the study investigates how writing tutors engage with writers, adopting hospitality as a core principle. Semi-structured postconsultation interviews and a focus group allowed tutors to reflect collaboratively on their application of the hospitality framework. Thematic analysis with in vivo coding ensured participants’ voices remained central to the findings. By examining the lived experiences of tutors, the study highlights the dynamic relationship between emotional and rational responses in …
Differences In Reported Mental Health For Schools Which Either Ban Or Allow Smartphones, Krista Moyer
Differences In Reported Mental Health For Schools Which Either Ban Or Allow Smartphones, Krista Moyer
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
Since approximately 2012, multiple international studies have found that rates of adolescent mental illness are increasing, with smartphone use proposed as one potential cause. Smartphone and social media use has been found to be associated with increased rates of mental illness. Few studies have examined the impact of smartphone policies in schools alongside the variable of mental health. This study examined the mental health items of the Pennsylvania Youth Survey (PAYS) in order to compare the mental health of students who were in schools which banned or allowed smartphones. Schools were grouped by policy based on a survey of administrators …
Developing Independent Living Skills In People With Intellectual Or Developmental Disabilities: A Guide For Direct Support Professionals, Nigel Yeo Mr.
Student Capstone Papers
Over one percent of the world has intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD). Many of these people lack the living skills needed to live independently. Direct support professionals (DSPs) are people who provide daily assistance, care, and support to improve the wellbeing and quality of life among people with IDD. DSPs often have minimal training to perform their role, especially in support of the development of independent living skills. Independent living skills are adaptive behavioral competencies related to self-sufficiency, with focus on conceptual skills such as language abilities, social skills including interpersonal and social problem-solving, and practical skills that relate to …
The Leading Causes Of Homelessness In Two Southeastern Counties Of Pennsylvania, Lucia Christine Spargo
The Leading Causes Of Homelessness In Two Southeastern Counties Of Pennsylvania, Lucia Christine Spargo
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Homelessness is a complex and multifaceted leading social issue in the United States. Society tends to focus on the individual as the cause of their own homelessness, blaming the victim rather than larger social and/or economic factors. There is an excess amount of data surrounding why/how an individual becomes homeless, but there is very little research examining the leading causes of homelessness in smaller geographic areas, such as counties. This study provides a better understanding and analysis of the leading causes of homelessness in two suburban counties in Southeastern Pennsylvania using binary logistic regression. Using ArcGIS, the study identified potential …

A Review Of Complimentary Theoretical Lens: Managing Supply Chain Of Material Drugs In Sub-Saharan Africa, Pross Oluka Nagitta, Godwin Kwemarira, Joseph Bufwambu, Luke Sewante, Bridget Nambuiru
African Social Science Review
The study examines supply chain coordination of the distribution of Artemisinin-based Combination Therapies (ACTs)intended for the treatment of malaria in Africa. Uganda, like most countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, lacks effective coordination structures to facilitate the delivery of ACTs. Thus, the researchers attempt to explain supply chain coordination using the activity domain, resource dependency, and coordination theories. This study builds upon previous studies that have used complexity theory and transaction cost economies perspectives to inform supply chain coordination. The article answers the following questions: What theories can be used to understand supply chain coordination in Sub-Saharan Africa? What opportunities does this …

The Effect Of Group Racial Make-Up And Instructions On White Students' Agreement With Social And Academic Norms During Race Talk, Camryn O'Conner
Student Theses and Dissertations
Discussions surrounding racism and Whiteness, although challenging are indispensable for gaining insights into the intricacies of today’s racial dynamics (Maxwell & Chesler, 2022). The literature, particularly the works of Sue (2013), delineates specific academic and social norms prevalent in classroom settings, such as the Academic, Politeness, and Color-Blind Protocols, each playing a distinct role in shaping conversations about race. In the current study, we explored two primary factors that could impact White college students’ alignment with the Academic, Color-Blind, and Politeness Protocols: the racial composition of the hypothetical conversation group and the presence, or absence, of instruction during the conversation. …
Complementary Self-Care Therapies To Self-Manage Endometriosis In Association With Health-Related Quality Of Life, Sarah Cummins
Complementary Self-Care Therapies To Self-Manage Endometriosis In Association With Health-Related Quality Of Life, Sarah Cummins
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
There is a lack of understanding within the psychological and medical communities on the extent to which endometriosis impacts the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of people with endometriosis (PWE). This population is understudied in relation to the effects of endometriosis on HRQoL, the various methods used to treat and cope with endometriosis-related symptoms, the influence of self-managing endometriosis on PWE’s HRQoL, or the HRQoL outcomes associated with using nontraditional methods to self-manage endometriosis. As such, there is a lack of knowledge on the extent to which the use of various types of complementary self-care therapies to self-manage endometriosis is …
Zine-Making As Site Of Research Brave Space: From Ethical Challenges To Transformative Opportunities In The Study Of Digital Sexual Intimacies, Rachele Reschiglian, Cosimo Marco Scarcelli
Zine-Making As Site Of Research Brave Space: From Ethical Challenges To Transformative Opportunities In The Study Of Digital Sexual Intimacies, Rachele Reschiglian, Cosimo Marco Scarcelli
The Qualitative Report
This paper presents zine-making workshops as sites of Research Brave Spaces (RBS), a methodological posture for scholars within transformative worldviews. Positioned within queer research methodologies, the paper argues that zine-making offers a creative and multimodal method that enhances participant engagement and reflexivity, challenging some limitations of traditional research methods. By framing research as a “brave space,” the paper shifts from the notion of “safe spaces,” emphasising the importance of embracing discomfort, vulnerability, and critical reflection throughout the research process in all the subjects involved. The methodology incorporates elements of care, collaboration, and adaptability, addressing the specific needs of marginalised participants, …

The Impact Of Prison Education On Prison Misconduct, Kelli Brooke Garrett
The Impact Of Prison Education On Prison Misconduct, Kelli Brooke Garrett
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Prison education programs can be found in nearly every carceral institution and are the cornerstone of rehabilitative efforts. Prison education, ranging from basic adult education to college-in-prison programs, provides numerous transformative educational opportunities that can lead to successful desistance. While the benefits of participation in prison education programs are evident, including reduced recidivism, increased employment, and family impact, the impact on reducing prison misconduct is less clear. This study aimed to determine the association between prison education and misconduct while controlling for the demographic, educational, and social factors that impact participation in prison education programs. A secondary analysis was conducted …
Citizenship Education For Trans Inclusion, Jac Bastian, Hans Svennevig
Citizenship Education For Trans Inclusion, Jac Bastian, Hans Svennevig
International Journal of Human Rights Education
Amidst a backdrop of rising hate crimes and hostility towards the trans community, educational institutions have emerged as an area of contestation. How can educators navigate this to create rights respecting classrooms that empower active citizens who advocate for trans equality? This piece provides a community-based commentary that considers the legal responsibilities and duties of teachers to safeguard children and young people. It informs us on opportunities for the consideration of educators’ duties through the lens of Yogyakarta Principles+10 and the UNCRC.
Queer Youth Futures Now! Education And Research As A Transformative Praxis For Queer Youth Globally, Cody Freeman
Queer Youth Futures Now! Education And Research As A Transformative Praxis For Queer Youth Globally, Cody Freeman
International Journal of Human Rights Education
Despite growing movements, queer youth find themselves in the spotlight of intense backlash. While anti-queer activism becomes increasingly visible, queer youth activists engage in worldmaking practices through their educational activism. This narrative literature review examines how scholarly literature discusses education and research as a transformative praxis to further queer youths’ envisioned ways of being and their activism in the future. Employing the concept of queer futurity, this article highlights how queer youth move through time and space, co-create knowledge through participatory research, and engage in activism within and beyond school settings. It also underscores the need for critically reflexive, relational …
