Does Lady Justice Need A Sword? Indictment: The Criminal Justice System On Trial By Benjamin Perrin, Noel Semple Jul 2025

Does Lady Justice Need A Sword? Indictment: The Criminal Justice System On Trial By Benjamin Perrin, Noel Semple

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

LADY JUSTICE CAN OFTEN BE FOUND, in statue form, in or near courthouses. This symbol of the Western justice system is blindfolded to show neutrality. She carries a scale to weigh facts and arguments fairly. Sometimes, she also holds an olive leaf to symbolize mercy and healing. A sword is the other accessory that Lady Justice invariably carries. The sword is a ubiquitous part of this symbol because most people believe that justice in general, and criminal justice in particular, necessarily involves inflicting pain upon wrongdoers.

Varieties And Domains: A Syncretic Synthesis Of Law And Justice In India ( Including A Special Emphasis On Alternate Dispute Resolution), Amrith Bhargav B

Theses and Dissertations

From the abstract idea of Dharma that enabled the practice and sustenance of local custom and usage, law was defined without verbiage but in meanings and understandings. In the colonial age, law was constantly being defined and codified not just textually, but through projects of economies of politics, knowledge and power in a way that their transactional metrics produced social and cultural genres that changed India forever. In that state of play, lawyers and their associated players contributed to the emerging culture of power and dominance with their tool of making the law through cases and mainstreamed the colonial legal …

Prenatal Psychosocial Distress Screening For Individuals Experiencing Pregnancies Complicated By Fetal Anomalies., Kara Hansen, Lisa Mische Lawson, Abigail Wilpers

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Pregnant individuals who receive a fetal anomaly diagnosis experience significantly elevated rates of depression, anxiety, and traumatic stress-up to four to six times higher than those for individuals with low-risk pregnancies. In low-risk pregnancies, perinatal mental health conditions are the leading cause of maternal mortality and are associated with adverse birth outcomes, including preterm birth and low birth weight. These risks are likely compounded in pregnancies involving fetal anomalies due to the intersecting psychological and social burdens that complicate maternal well-being and access to care. However, there is a critical gap in understanding how these mental health symptoms translate into …

Counseling Faculty Publications

Migrants often face severe trauma before and during their journey, leading to mental health challenges such as post-traumatic stress disorder and acute stress. This study explores the Flash Technique (FT) as a one-time intervention for newly arrived migrants. Twelve healthcare professionals and 11 student interns trained in FT provided interventions to 55 migrants, who showed substantial improvements in subjective units of distress scores. The findings highlight the efficacy of a low-intensity intervention in a humanitarian context, which can serve to mitigate the long-term psychological impact of trauma.

Correctional Psychology And Training Implications: A Mixed Analysis Of Trainee Knowledge And Application Of Ethical Dilemmas In Corrections, And A Closer Look At The Experience Of Support From Generalist Training, Alyssa A. Hoyt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Correctional psychology, a subfield of psychology, has long been comprised of its own distinct purpose, focus, and competencies. Yet correctional psychology remains unrecognized today as a formal American Psychology Association (APA) specialization. Unlike forensic psychology, without an APA specialization, and subsequent structured training standards, scholars have argued that correctional mental health professionals may be ill-prepared to navigate unique ethical dilemmas inherent to the correctional environment. The present mixed analysis study aimed to contribute to this discussion by assessing psychology trainees’ ability to respond to hypothetical ethical dilemmas in a manner consistent with correctional environments, and whether prior correctional experience/ exposure …
