This paper serves as a teaching report examining an interdisciplinary, co-taught course at a rural, regional state university designed to promote ethics, justice, and grassroots leadership through community-engaged learning (CEL). Faculty from criminal justice, philosophy, and leadership studies co-developed and taught the course using Socratic dialogue and reflective journaling to help students analyze community challenges from multiple disciplinary angles. Students also engaged in training on positionality, power dynamics, and cultural humility, incorporating their reflections into final reports to deepen ethical engagement. Regular faculty collaboration aligned teaching strategies across disciplines, while a case study presentation and analysis allowed community partners to …

Understanding And Experiencing American Identity During A Single-Semester Study Abroad Program In London, Polly Penter Aug 2025

Understanding And Experiencing American Identity During A Single-Semester Study Abroad Program In London, Polly Penter

Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education

The United States government is actively promoting and seeking to increase the number of Americans who study abroad. While institutions promise students intercultural development, Dolby (2007) asserts that “critical reflection on national identity is both obtainable and an important step toward global citizenship” (p. 141). An understanding of how students understand and experience their national (American) identity is therefore imperative for Study Abroad providers to develop effective programming. This qualitative study, using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, attempts to gain such an understanding. Drawing on Mezirow’s theory of Transformative Learning, it finds that those who experience Mezirow’s “disorienting dilemma” are not necessarily …

The Art Of Saying No: Empowering Nurses To Set Boundaries For Well-Being, Sara Kaylor, Abby Horton, Haley Townsend, Meridith Rice, Susan Prevost Aug 2025

The Art Of Saying No: Empowering Nurses To Set Boundaries For Well-Being, Sara Kaylor, Abby Horton, Haley Townsend, Meridith Rice, Susan Prevost

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

The nursing profession, long dominated by women, is shaped by societal norms that encourage selflessness and compliance, leading nurses to prioritize others over their own well-being. This expectation to always say yes, coupled with the demands of various practice settings, contributes to burnout and stress. This presentation advocates for a feminist approach to boundary-setting, offering strategies to help nurses confidently say no, establish healthy boundaries, and maintain a balanced career.

Exploring The Service-Learning Volunteer Experience Of African American Male Educators In Urban Schools, Gia N. Paige Aug 2025

Exploring The Service-Learning Volunteer Experience Of African American Male Educators In Urban Schools, Gia N. Paige

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Educators who self-identify as African American male educators are underrepresented in educational leadership and scholarship on service learning, despite the significant roles they play in shaping urban educational spaces. In this qualitative phenomenological study, the lived service experiences of five African American male educators who engaged in service-learning and volunteerism in urban schools were explored. The purpose was to examine how these educators narrated their service experiences and how those experiences intersected with their identity as African American males. African American male theory was used to frame the study, emphasizing cultural heritage, resistance to deficit perspectives, and the affirmation of …

Building Resiliency In Senior Nursing And Health Profession Students, Diane K. Brown Aug 2025

Building Resiliency In Senior Nursing And Health Profession Students, Diane K. Brown

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Nurses and students report high stress and burnout associated with front line care. Nursing curriculum and other health professions dedicate little instruction regarding resiliency or handling professional stress. This lack of training may account for the high rate of job and professional turnover in the first year of practice. Stress in the health professions begins as students who arguably work harder than many other students in other majors to meet the high demands of challenging curriculum and clinical practice hours.

The purpose of this presentation is to describe a resiliency training workshop and the effect on student participants regarding feelings …

“Me Dancing”: An Intrinsic Case Study Of Primary School Boys’ Understandings Of Movement And Dance Through Their Drawings, Rosemary G. Bennett Ms, Jane Southcott

The Qualitative Report

In this research we explore the place of creative embodiment through movement and dance from the understandings of a group of 8-10-year-old elementary school boys. Children can be asked to speak or write about their movement experiences, but for younger cohorts it may easier for them to reveal their ideas via their own drawings. In this qualitative study using drawings as a research method, two classes (a total of 31) of Year 3-4 boys in a suburban elementary school in Melbourne, Australia were asked to produce a drawing of “me dancing” in an empty frame. Each child was then asked …

Exploring Leadership, Culture, And The Dynamics Of Collective Empathy: A Nonprofit Case Study, David L. Harkins, Deborah A. O'Neil

Management Faculty Publications

This case study explores the formation, embedding, and sustainability of collective empathy at [Healing Arts for Children; HAC], a pseudonym for small arts-focused nonprofit serving pediatric patients. The 20-year-old organization utilizes art and music to alleviate anxiety and enhance positive health care experiences for critically and chronically ill children and their families. While the existing literature primarily focuses on individual-level empathy in the workplace, this study focuses on the underexplored aspects of systemlevel empathy applications, which may be essential to determining how empathy forms, embeds, and sustains within an organization. Collective empathy, the shared capacity of organization members to recognize, …

Astrocytes Expressing Mutant Hnrnpa1 Induce Non-Cell-Autonomous Motor Neuron Death, Qinxue Wu, Xionghao Liu, Tingting Zhang, Shiquan Cui, Bo Huang, Cao Huang, Qilin Cao, Xu-Gang Xia, Hongxia Zhou Aug 2025

Astrocytes Expressing Mutant Hnrnpa1 Induce Non-Cell-Autonomous Motor Neuron Death, Qinxue Wu, Xionghao Liu, Tingting Zhang, Shiquan Cui, Bo Huang, Cao Huang, Qilin Cao, Xu-Gang Xia, Hongxia Zhou

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Pathogenic mutation of heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein A1 (hnRNPA1) is causative to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Neuron death resulting from pathogenic hnRNPA1 may not require its presence across all pertinent cells types, including neurons, glia, and muscles. Rather, the exclusive presence of pathogenic hnRNPA1 in a specific cell type, such as astrocytes, may suffice to substantially alter cellular functions. Consequently, this alteration initiates abnormal interaction within intricate neuron-glia networks, culminating in non-cell-autonomous motor neuron death. To investigate the pivotal role of non-cell-autonomous neuron death in hnRNPA1-associated ALS, we developed transgenic rats overexpressing mutant hnRNPA1 in specifically astrocytes. The confined overexpression of …

Is There An Association Between Food Literacy And Diet Quality In Young Adult College Men?, Morgan Claire Mayeux Aug 2025

Is There An Association Between Food Literacy And Diet Quality In Young Adult College Men?, Morgan Claire Mayeux

Master's Theses

Food literacy skills can improve dietary intake in young adults as it provides them with the tools they need to make healthier food-related decisions. The benefits of improving food literacy includes the reduction in the risk of prevalent, preventable dietrelated diseases such as obesity, T2DM, heart disease, and other chronic diseases that plague the Unites States today. Previous literature reports primarily on college female samples. Because a large proportion of the samples in the available studies are female, the current literature may not reflect young adult men’s food literacy and its comparison to their overall diet quality. The purpose of …

“My Body Was Never Mine”: An Arts-Based Phenomenological Analysis Of Queer And Trans Adolescent Involuntary Psychiatric Hospitalization Experiences, Megan Doyle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Involuntary psychiatric hospitalization has life-saving and crisis-stabilizing intentions for queer and trans adolescents experiencing mental health crises; however, there are significant concerns about the adverse effects of this practice. This study employed two interwoven qualitative methods, interpretative phenomenological analysis and arts-based research, to gain a deeper understanding of queer and trans individuals’ adolescent experiences of involuntary psychiatric hospitalization. The theory of abolition was applied to examine the carcerality and identity-based oppression embedded within this procedure. Participant narratives and artwork revealed how involuntary psychiatric hospitalization is non-affirming for queer and trans young people in crisis, and the impacts of experiencing coercion, …

Milkfish (Chanos Chanos) Bones As A Biosorbent For Mercury (Ii) Contamination In Water, Seth Uriel K. Neri, Ethan Kyle Mangao, Christian Kevin F. Redoblado, Anthony Cesar Y. Ponce, Roby Boy P. Riego, Jupiter O. Yap

Sinaya: A Philippine Journal for Senior High School Teachers and Students

Heavy metals, such as mercury contamination in water sources are a major environmental and public health issue in many countries. Traditional methods for removing heavy metals from water are effective but often costly and unsustainable and may produce secondary waste. Recent trends favor more sustainable alternatives, such as biosorbents in treating water with heavy metals. Milkfish (Chanos chanos), a common fish in the Philippines, contains hydroxyapatite in the bones that can bind with heavy metals through physical and chemical adsorption mechanisms. This study aims to evaluate the mercury (II) reduction capacity of biosorbent derived from milkfish bones in water, specifically …
