Cultural Definitions Of Health Care: A Case Study Of Burmese Refugees In Indianapolis, Marielena White

Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences

As a result of ongoing civil war and civil unrest in the Southeast Asian country of Myanmar, every year, the United States accepts increasing numbers of refugees from Burma, of which there is a population of significance within the greater Indianapolis area. When considering options for health care, Burmese refugees may opt for self care instead of care from a health care professional as a result of clashing cultural factors or fears of the unknown.

This study aims to uncover how members of the Chin ethnic group have been challenged or confronted by the social, cultural, and political institutions surrounding …

Locking Up Families Is Inhumane—And Unconstitutional, Lynnette Arnold, Miranda Cady Hallett Mar 2017

Locking Up Families Is Inhumane—And Unconstitutional, Lynnette Arnold, Miranda Cady Hallett

Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work Faculty Publications

From the fear of asylum-seekers in Western Europe to the panic around “illegals” in the United States, there is a global backlash against immigrants. These sentiments are increasingly accompanied by a crackdown in enforcement. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement placed 352,882 people in detention facilities during fiscal year 2016, a sharp increase from the 193,951 detained in 2015.

U.S. President Donald Trump promises to lock up exponentially more, having made the fight against “illegal immigration” a central plank of his campaign platform. But who are the people incarcerated in these immigration prisons? What are they …

Blending Large Scale Syllabi Text Analysis With Qualitative Instructor Preferences Data To Help Inform Directions For Media Collections Development And Outreach, Scott Spicer Mar 2017

Blending Large Scale Syllabi Text Analysis With Qualitative Instructor Preferences Data To Help Inform Directions For Media Collections Development And Outreach, Scott Spicer

Library Technology Conference

A primary challenge of effectively promoting the instructional use of library materials and determining investments in collection development is gaining a deep understanding of how these resources are used within disciplinary and course contexts. This presentation will describe an ongoing pilot project in UMN Library Media Services that blends the mining of large corpora of departmental syllabi (using NVIVO text analysis software) coupled with instructor survey and correspondence data sources to better understand contextualized media resource use (and integration of student media projects). Though this pilot has been limited to a few select media intensive disciplines, these reviews have already …

The Evansville Home For The Friendless And The Problems Of Female Reform, Brianna Mclaughlin Mar 2017

The Evansville Home For The Friendless And The Problems Of Female Reform, Brianna Mclaughlin

Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences

The 19th century was an era of social reform, particularly in regard to women. Religious middle- to upper-class women joined forces in an effort to end prostitution and immoral crimes. In an attempt to “heal” prostitutes and other delinquents, reformers founded institutions including maternity homes. The Evansville Home for the Friendless was one such maternity home, established in 1870 and operating for almost 100 years. The Home for the Friendless housed unmarried mothers and wrote logbook entries detailing the lives of others whom the women judged to be morally felonious. The matrons in charge of the Home for the Friendless …

Leaders Of The Pack: Women And The Future Of Veterinary Medicine, Julie Kumble, Donald Smith Mar 2017

Leaders Of The Pack: Women And The Future Of Veterinary Medicine, Julie Kumble, Donald Smith

New Directions in the Human-Animal Bond

Veterinary medicine has undergone sweeping changes in the last few decades. Women now account for 55 percent of the active veterinarians in the field, and nearly 80 percent of veterinary students are women. However, average salaries have dropped as this shift has occurred, and even with women in the vast majority, only 25 percent of leadership roles are held by women. These trends point to gender-based inequality that veterinary medicine, a profession that tilts so heavily toward women, is struggling to address. How will the profession respond? What will this mean for our students and schools? What will it mean …

Tracing Virtual Advocacy Approaches For Welfare Policy Over Two Decades, Teresa Reinders, Samantha Church, Anne Statham Mar 2017

Tracing Virtual Advocacy Approaches For Welfare Policy Over Two Decades, Teresa Reinders, Samantha Church, Anne Statham

Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences

This paper focuses on the virtual efforts of several nonprofits to preserve “safety net” programs in the struggle with groups that view these programs as unnecessary or as dependency forming. E-mail messages received by the third author fell into 20 broad categories, of which four are analyzed here, messages often revolving around such programs as unemployment insurance, medical care and insurance, Food Stamp and other nutrition programs, and the Violence Against Women Act. The tone and content of the messages often varied with presidential administrations, the structure of Congress, and economic events, such as the crash of 2008. In all …

Consistency In Aggregation Of Gdp Indexes And Uniqueness Of Quantity And Price Effects On Growth Of Gdp And Aggregate Labor Productivity, Jesus C. Dumagan Mar 2017

Consistency In Aggregation Of Gdp Indexes And Uniqueness Of Quantity And Price Effects On Growth Of Gdp And Aggregate Labor Productivity, Jesus C. Dumagan

Angelo King Institute for Economic and Business Studies (AKI)

In traditional decomposition of GDP growth in constant prices, an industry’s contribution consisted only of a quantity effect from GDP growth. Tang and Wang’s (2004, 2014) innovation added a price effect from relative price change. Dumagan (2013a, 2016) showed that Tang and Wang’s quantity and price effects for all industries exactly add up to growth of GDP either in chained or in constant prices, that is, regardless of the GDP index. However, this paper shows that it is only when GDP is in chained prices and the GDP index is consistent-in-aggregation (CIA) that quantity and price effects are invariant with …

Age Of First Arrest, Sex, And Drug Use As Correlates Of Adult Risk Behaviors Among Rural Women In Jails, Martha Tillson, Justin C. Strickland, Michele Staton Mar 2017

Age Of First Arrest, Sex, And Drug Use As Correlates Of Adult Risk Behaviors Among Rural Women In Jails, Martha Tillson, Justin C. Strickland, Michele Staton

Center on Drug and Alcohol Research Faculty Publications

Incarcerated women frequently report initiation of substance use and sexual encounters at an early age, and often engage in high-risk drug use and sexual behaviors as adults. This study examined the timing of first sex, drug use, and arrest, as well as their unique influences on specific risky behaviors in adulthood, among a high-risk population of rural women recruited from jails. Ages of initiation were all positively and significantly correlated, and each independently increased the likelihood of several risky behaviors in adulthood. Implications are discussed for screening, intervention, and treatment targeting high-risk women and girls in rural areas, particularly within …

An Exploration Of The Relationship Between Child Welfare Workers’ Ambivalent Sexism And Beliefs About Father Involvement, Katrina Lee Brewsaugh Mar 2017

An Exploration Of The Relationship Between Child Welfare Workers’ Ambivalent Sexism And Beliefs About Father Involvement, Katrina Lee Brewsaugh

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Research over the last few decades has consistently found that fathers are not routinely included in the provision of child welfare services. The current study examined whether ambivalent sexism on the part of child welfare workers was related to their beliefs about involving fathers. Ambivalent sexism theory posits that gender stereotypes include subjectively positive beliefs in addition to hostile beliefs that both serve to perpetuate patriarchal systems. Participants (N = 490) were currently front-line child welfare workers in the United States who completed an online survey assessing ambivalent sexism and beliefs about father involvement in child welfare cases. Ambivalent sexism …

Screening, Brief Intervention And Referral To Treatment Implementation In The Emergency Department, Arvind Venkat Md, Gary Shank Phd, Sherry Rickard-Aasen, Janice Pringle Phd, William Johnjulio Md

The Qualitative Report

We sought to qualitatively evaluate impediments in implementing a novel Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) protocol into normal emergency department (ED) workflow for patients with at-risk drug/alcohol behavior. From 2010, administrative and nursing champions trained nurses at a single ED (census: 50,000 visits/yr) in SBIRT and incorporated SBIRT into normal ED nursing workflow in 2012. To qualitatively analyze impediments in SBIRT implementation, we created a semi-structured questionnaire for protocol champions with subsequent follow-up. Investigators analyzed responses using qualitative methodology based on a modified grounded theory framework. In 2012, 47693 visits by 31525 patients met SBIRT protocol initiation …

P20. The Intersection Of Medical Assistance In Dying And Social Work Practice, Amanda M. Cramm Mar 2017

P20. The Intersection Of Medical Assistance In Dying And Social Work Practice, Amanda M. Cramm

Western Research Forum

In June 2016, Parliament amended the Criminal Code to create exemptions from the offences of culpable homicide, aiding suicide, and administering a noxious thing, in order to permit medical practitioners and nurse practitioners to provide medical assistance in dying (“MAiD”). The amendment permits social workers to assist in the process. However, the role of the social worker in this context remains unclear and has left many professional social workers uncertain as to how their practice may be affected by the new MAiD law.

The objectives of this research are to identify the role of social workers within the context of …
