Enhancing The Career Planning Self-Determination Of Young Adults With Mental Health Challenges, Jo-Ann Sowers, Paul R. Swank Apr 2017

Enhancing The Career Planning Self-Determination Of Young Adults With Mental Health Challenges, Jo-Ann Sowers, Paul R. Swank

Regional Research Institute for Human Services

The impact of an intervention on the self-determination and career planning engagement of young adults with mental health challenges was studied. Sixty-seven young adults, 20 to 30 years of age, with mental health diagnoses (e.g., depression, bipolar disorder) were randomly assigned to intervention and control groups. Statistically significant greater increases were made by the intervention group versus the control group for self-determination and career planning engagement, and self-determination at least partially mediated increases in career planning engagement. With career planning self-determination interventions, young adults with mental health challenges might be able to achieve better career and life outcomes than is …

Methodology: Data were obtained from a field sample of 417 healthcare workers in two psychiatric hospitals. Hypotheses were tested using moderated multiple regression analyses.

The (Non) Use Of Repositories: A Case Study, Kimberly D. Pendell

Online Northwest

Research is key for professionals in fields such as social work to improve practice; however, most articles are unavailable outside the academic sphere, locked behind expensive paywalls. Repositories could help overcome this barrier, but are authors depositing their work? This presentation presents the results of examining over 600 citations from high impact social work journals for access via repositories and other platforms. Due to the recentness of data collection, the study also documents authors’ use of the ResearchGate platform to share research. The presentation will prompt discussion regarding repositories, discoverability outside of the academy, and copyright awareness among faculty.

Merging Ahead, Increase Speed: A Pilot Of Funder-Driven Nonprofit Restructuring, Robert L. Fischer, Claudia J. Coulton

Faculty Scholarship

Nonprofit agencies face increasing competition for scarce funding resources. Many agencies are considering ways to restructure themselves, often via mergers and acquisitions, as a way to become more effective and competitive. This case study examines a pilot initiative in Cleveland, Ohio, in which philanthropic funders invited and supported nonprofits in the pursuit of significant restructuring efforts. Health and human service nonprofits were recruited into a three-phase facilitated pilot that assisted the agency executive directors and boards in determining what type of restructuring was feasible and desirable. Overall, 75 nonprofits participated in some part of the pilot, 17 of which formally …

Full Issue: Journal On Empowering Teaching Excellence, Volume 1, Issue 1

Journal on Empowering Teaching Excellence

For our inaugural issue, we reviewed the feedback from our 2016 ETE faculty conference—an event for USU faculty hosted every August on the USU main campus. We identified several of the presenters who received high marks in post-session surveys and invited them to submit a proceedings paper for their presentation. Many responded, and their papers now comprise the majority of this issue. Because most of the articles began as stand-up presentations for a conference, several adopt a first-person narrative style in which the authors share examples of things they have tried in their teaching that have worked. In the process …

Toolkit Development For A Community-Based Palliative Care Program, Tanya A. Rowerdink Mar 2017

Toolkit Development For A Community-Based Palliative Care Program, Tanya A. Rowerdink

Doctoral Projects

The quality of care in the U.S. at the end of life is poor, yet comes with a high price. Since the Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) report Approaching Death in 1997, inpatient palliative care programs in hospitals with 50 beds or more have grown by 165%. In 2015, the IOM had a follow up report, Dying in America that indicates the need for community-based palliative care programs to increase access of care for individuals who are homebound or live in rural communities. In January 2016, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) initiated the Medicare Care Choices Model (MCCM) …

Analysis Of Worcester's Youth Employment Sector, Laurie Ross Phd, Ramon Borges-Mendez Phd, Alex Rothfelder

Mosakowski Institute for Public Enterprise

Overall, the employment rate for Worcester youth has improved since 2000; yet mirroring the nation, Worcester continues to have a smaller share of youth 16-24 employed. This situation is intensified for youth of color and young people facing barriers such as homelessness, exiting foster care, juvenile justice involvement, and limited English proficiency. Mass, Inc. estimates that in Worcester there are 3400 disconnected youth—756 are between 16-19 and 2644 are between 20-24. From the youth employment program inventory, we learned that the city’s programs offer many opportunities for “first job” experiences; has some exemplary programs that integrate youth development and workforce …
