Sustainability In Business: Adapting To New Trends, Derek Decastro Apr 2017

Sustainability In Business: Adapting To New Trends, Derek Decastro

Honors Senior Capstone Projects

Environmental sustainability is a concept that businesses should incorporate in order to maximize production, increase competitiveness in their respective markets, and enhance their longevity. To address and incorporate environmental and sustainability concerns into business practice, a concept call the triple bottom line was developed by John Elkington. As Timothy Slaper and Tanya Hall explain for the Indiana Business Review (2011), Elkington contrived the idea of the triple bottom line to include three primary factors: economic, environmental, and social, commonly referred to as the “three P’s” as profit, planet, and people (p. 4). Businesses that emphasize these three factors equally instead …

Nightmares In The Kitchen: Personal Experience Narratives About Cooking And Food, Sarah T. Shultz

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This thesis explores personal experience narratives about making mistakes in the preparation and serving of food. In order to understand when these narratives, referred to in the text as “kitchen nightmares,” are told, to whom, in what form, and why, one-onone and group ethnographic interviews were conducted. In total, 13 interviews were conducted with 25 individuals (men and women) ranging in age from 19 to 70. Six major themes of kitchen nightmare narratives are identified in Chapter One. Chapter Two explores one of these themes, resistance, in the context of the kitchen nightmare stories of heterosexual married women. Chapter Three …

Examining The Relationship Between Medical Concerns And Overall Mental Health Rating, Sarah M. Wilson Apr 2017

Examining The Relationship Between Medical Concerns And Overall Mental Health Rating, Sarah M. Wilson

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

It is widely supported that there are significant, positive relationships between the occurrence of some mental health symptoms and physical illnesses. Research indicates that the burden experienced by those with a physical and mental illness are magnified compared to individuals who do not experience an illness. More specifically, one of the burdens experienced by individuals is the monetary burden of affording the necessary health services to properly manage their illness.

This study attempts to reveal a difference between mental health symptom count for individuals who do and do not experience difficulty affording health care for their physical problems. The first …

Therapy With Mental Health Providers: A Study Of Self-Stigma And Help Seeking Behaviors, Katrina Records Apr 2017

Therapy With Mental Health Providers: A Study Of Self-Stigma And Help Seeking Behaviors, Katrina Records

Thinking Matters Symposium Archive

We live in a society where stigma against people with mental illness exists. To make matters more complicated, our society devalues people who ask for help, labeling them as unstable or insecure. Those who do ask for help often face the most stigma related discrimination within the health care setting. In fact, some studies have shown that mental health providers frequently judge people chronic mental illness negatively. As a result, many people with mental illness chose to not seek help. For mental health providers, therapy is often seen as a desirable learning experience at the beginning of their careers, to …

Examining Psychological And Social Factors Of Grandparent Kinship Providers, Arsenio Santamaria Apr 2017

Examining Psychological And Social Factors Of Grandparent Kinship Providers, Arsenio Santamaria

Thinking Matters Symposium Archive

According to the 2003 U.S Census approximately 2.4 million children are being raised solely by their Grandparents(Bunch, Eastman, & Griffin, 2007). With this number steadily increasing it is imperative that a greater understanding be developed to understand the social and psychological factors that lead grandparents to become kinship providers. This study examined the psychological and social factors that grandparent kinship providers experience impacting their lives on multiple levels. The Adoptive Foster Families of Maine and the Kinship Program was contacted and allowed the researcher to reach out to grandparent kinship providers who were interested in the study to conduct semi-structured …

Locked Up Then Locked Out: Reentry Programming And Women’S Post-Carceral Success, Mary Reising 17 Apr 2017

Locked Up Then Locked Out: Reentry Programming And Women’S Post-Carceral Success, Mary Reising 17

Honor Scholar Theses

Women represent one of the fastest growing populations in the American criminal justice system today, with rates of female incarceration increasing 700% from 1980 to 2014. In a criminal justice system built by and for men, however, women’s narratives often go unheard and their needs unmet, especially in the tenuous period post-incarceration. This paper focuses on women’s experiences of reentry, the period in which women are transitioning back to their communities after incarceration. Specifically, this paper will assess whether current reentry programming is equipped to adequately attend to and advocate for women’s post-carceral needs. I situate women’s needs upon reentry …

Working With Refugees In The U.S.: Trauma-Informed And Structurally Competent Social Work Approaches, Jason Ostrander, Alysse Melville, S. Megan Berthold Apr 2017

Working With Refugees In The U.S.: Trauma-Informed And Structurally Competent Social Work Approaches, Jason Ostrander, Alysse Melville, S. Megan Berthold

School of Social Work Faculty Publications

Social workers, government, and non-governmental organizations in the United States have been inadequately prepared to address the impact of trauma faced by refugees fleeing persecution. Compounding their initial trauma experiences, refugees often undergo further traumatic migration experiences and challenges after resettlement that can have long-lasting effects on their health and mental health. Micro and macro social work practitioners must understand the impact of these experiences in order to promote policies, social work training, and clinical practice that further the health and well-being of refugees and society. Social workers are in a unique position to provide multi-dimensional, structurally competent care and …

Engaging Lbgtq Issues: It’S Still Complicated, Gary F. Sehorn Dr.

Faculty Publications - College of Education

Public school administrators deal with a range of culture war conflicts on a regular basis, and LBGTQ issues are particularly challenging. When I joined my Christian university’s faculty after a long career working as an Evangelical administrator in public schools, I looked forward to shifting from experiencing these conflicts as a public school administrator to equipping others to handle them. Instead, the challenges have become even more complicated.

Freedom And Unity: Examining The Individualized, Community-Based Process Of Restorative Justice In Vermont And What It Can Teach Other States, Through A Trainer's Lens, Megan Grove

Capstone Collection

How can communities and law enforcement embrace a cultural shift to address conflict in a way that restores relationships and makes amends instead of one that punishes and criminalizes certain behaviors and individuals? How can we create spaces where those who commit harm, those who are impacted by harm, and other affected parties can come together with equal voice, have their needs met, and communicate in healthy ways? This Course-Linked Capstone in Training, situated in Brattleboro, Vermont, looks at the power of restorative justice and restorative processes to heal relationships and empower communities to care for one another and address …

Developing Citizenship Through Honors, Jacob Andrew Hester, Kari Lynn Besing Apr 2017

Developing Citizenship Through Honors, Jacob Andrew Hester, Kari Lynn Besing

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

For decades, research has shown that higher levels of education correspond to increased interest in politics and civic engagement. Despite the vast amount of scholarly attention, why this link exists is still disputed. One theory about the connection is the civic education hypothesis, which claims that the causal link between education and civic engagement depends not only on the amount of education a person receives but also on the type of curriculum studied. For example, Hillygus argues that “some courses are more likely than others to develop the skills fundamental to political participation” (31). Similarly, Condon argues that the development …

Violence In Jamaica’S High Schools, Lorna Grant

African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies

This research determines the presence of crime, the disciplinary policies and procedures, and security measures on high school campuses in Jamaica. Data was collected from 27 randomly selected public high schools in the parishes of Kingston, St Andrew and St. Catherine through the administration of interviews, self-reported questionnaires and focus group discussions. School administrators (principals), teachers, guidance counselors and resource officers were engaged in face to face interviews. Male students (n=405), ages 12 to 17 years old who were classified as disruptive students, were randomly selected from lists provided by principals and school guidance counselors to participate in the research. …
