This study investigates and analyses the positive and negative effects of social media on students’ academic and social lives. With the adoption of survey methodology, 204 students from University of Ghana and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology were randomly selected to participate in this study. The results of this study indicate that the positive effects of social media outweigh its negative counterpart hence, students should not be entirely discouraged from visiting social media sites.

Generally, attitudes in the United States towards lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) persons have become more favorable in recent years. Obviously, examining the politics of LGBTI persons and attitudes towards them is important considering that this demographic may account for 10% of the U.S. population; but a more inconspicuous reason it that examinations provide insight into the political landscape of how political minorities address various issues and interests. However, in studying public opinion towards gays and lesbians it is discovered that racial minorities, particularly African-Americans, generally possess negative attitudes to LGBTI persons and possess higher percentages of homophobic …

Generational Change In Parenting Styles Among Vietnamese In Nebraska, Paulina Nguyen
UCARE: Research Products
This study is part of a larger research project that examines the experiences and beliefs of parents from five Asian population in Nebraska, namely, Filipino, Korean, Chinese, Vietnamese, and Indian. There is a need for research on Vietnamese American families, more so because of its increasing population in the state. The goal of the study is to describe the ways in which Vietnamese American parents differ across generations in terms of their child-rearing practices. Parents are either authoritarian or authoritative. Nguyen and Cheung (2009) stated that research specifically on Vietnamese parents is limited. Thus, past literature has generalized all Asian …
Contextual Determinants Of Mathematics Achievement: A Closer Look At The Influence Of Principals' Instructional Leadership, Teachers' Preferred Instructional Approaches, And Academic Optimism, Tremayne White
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to ascertain whether certain contextual factors pertaining to principals and teachers influenced U.S. eighth grade students’ math achievement. More specifically, the study comparatively examined the direct and mediating predictive influence of teacher instructional approaches (i.e., teacher-directed, constructivism), academic optimism (i.e., academic emphasis, collective efficacy, faculty trust in parents/students), teacher self-efficacy, and principal instructional leadership (i.e., define school mission, manage instructional program, promote positive learning climate) between the first (lowest achieving) and fourth (highest achieving) quartiles by controlling for SES and students’ attitudes toward math. The study employed a causal comparative design utilizing data from …

Similarities And Differences In The Influence Of Paternal And Maternal Depression On Adolescent Well-Being, Kevin Shafer, Brandon Fielding, Douglas Wendt

Depressed parents may negatively influence the well-being and outcomes of their children. However, prior research has mostly addressed mother's depression and early childhood outcomes, whereas fathers and adolescents have been largely ignored in the literature. Using data from the sixth grade and age 15 waves of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development's Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development, this study addresses similarities and differences in the influence of paternal and maternal depression on adolescent behavior. Results from structural equation models showed that paternal depression had direct effects on both internalizing and externalizing …

Student Loans, Financial Stress, And College Student Retention, Sonya L. Britt, David Allen Ammerman, Sarah F. Barrett, Scott Jones
Journal of Student Financial Aid
This study examined a sample of 2,475 undergraduate students to determine the influence of financial stress, debt loads, and financial counseling on retention rates. Results indicate, among other findings, that financial stress contributes to an increased likelihood of discontinuing college. Self-reported student loan debt contributes to an increased likelihood of discontinuing college, although students with the highest amount of university-reported student loan debt have a decreased likelihood of discontinuing college one year later as compared to students with no student loan debt. Interestingly, in this study students who sought financial counseling were more likely to discontinue college within the next …
