Utilizing Evidence Based Practice To Reduce Hemoglobin A1c Levels In Primary Care By Increasing Frequency Of Office Visits, Mary Smith Williams
DNP and Student Works
Diabetes Mellitus is one of the leading chronic diseases in the United States as well as in the world. It is a disease that becomes progressively more difficult to manage as time goes by with each patient. It costs the patient as well as the public. It costs in terms of health as well as monetary expenses. Studies have shown that better preventive care can decrease complications and help the patient live a longer, healthier life. Providers should consider more frequent office visits for patients with elevated HbA1c levels as this offers not only an opportunity for the provider to …

Using Insider Action Research In The Study Of Digital Entrepreneurial Processes: A Pragmatic Design Choice?, Kisito Futonge
Using Insider Action Research In The Study Of Digital Entrepreneurial Processes: A Pragmatic Design Choice?, Kisito Futonge
Conference papers
This paper proposes that insider action research (IAR), with its iterative and emergent form of inquiry, presents a pragmatic design choice for understanding the nature of uncertainty surrounding the digital entrepreneurial process. Since entrepreneurship in the digital context is a highly dynamic and fluid process, IAR appears well-suited for use in researching it. Yet, the paucity of application in entrepreneurship research in general, and less so in the emerging digital space, is rather puzzling. Thus, using a ‘live’ case study in the e-learning domain, this paper contributes by shining light on how this design choice might be set up and …

Recruiting Undergraduate Students: Creating A Path To The Counseling Profession, Jake J. Protivnak, Jennifer F. Yensel
Recruiting Undergraduate Students: Creating A Path To The Counseling Profession, Jake J. Protivnak, Jennifer F. Yensel
Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
Counselor educators must find ways to encourage undergraduate students to choose to pursue a graduate degree in counseling. Related helping professions (e.g., psychology, social work) may have a recruitment advantage. Faculty in disciplines with both undergraduate and graduate programs can encourage high achieving undergraduate students to continue into graduate programs within their discipline. Due to the lack of a discipline specific academic pathway and an undergraduate advising system directing students into counseling graduate programs, counselor educators must find innovative ways to recruit undergraduate students. The authors will discuss the issues involved in recruiting undergraduate students, present a framework for sharing …

A Survey Of Students’ Knowledge About Child Sexual Abuse And Perceived Readiness To Provide Counseling Services, Jennifer Marie Foster
A Survey Of Students’ Knowledge About Child Sexual Abuse And Perceived Readiness To Provide Counseling Services, Jennifer Marie Foster
Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
Master's level students in counselor education and counseling psychology (N = 304) were surveyed to explore their knowledge about child sexual abuse (CSA) and perceived readiness to provide related counseling services. While students demonstrated general knowledge about sexual abuse, preparedness to counsel was rated much lower with 69% of students indicating low levels of competency. Data was analyzed to explore demographic characteristics that led to increased readiness scores. Indicators of statistically significant higher readiness scores included: prior work or volunteer experience with victims of sexual abuse, participation in CSA trainings, and supervised field experience. Implications for student training and recommendations …

Gatekeeping Practices Of Counselor Educators In Master's Level Counseling Programs, Vanessa B. Teixeira
Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
Counseling students often present with problems of professional competence (PPC) in counselor education programs. The purpose of this study is to determine differences in the gatekeeping practices of counselor educators with students identified with PPC in CACREP-accredited and non-CACREP accredited counselor education programs in the United States. A survey instrument with scenarios related to students presenting with PPC was given to counselor educators. Results found no significant differences in gatekeeping practices between CACREP-accredited and non-CACREP accredited programs.

Embracing Evidence Based Collecting In The Health And Behavioral Sciences, Carolyn Schubert, Michael Mungin
Embracing Evidence Based Collecting In The Health And Behavioral Sciences, Carolyn Schubert, Michael Mungin
Libraries
Objective: Evidence based collection development requires combining multiple sources of information, such as usage data, subject librarian expertise, user values and preferences, and external evidence from librarianship research. Through triangulation, librarians can build a collection that is responsive, balanced, and relevant to address both established and emerging curricular trends. In the field of health and behavioral studies, growth in interprofessional education supports collaborative collecting practices. In 2014-2015, health and behavioral studies librarians at James Madison University (JMU) piloted a collapsed monographic selection project to facilitate better interdisciplinary collecting. This project discusses an evidence-based approach to evaluating and updating approval profiles …
Achieving Clinical Learning Outcomes In A Community/Public Health Nursing Course Through An International Immersion Experience, Brandy E. Strahan
Achieving Clinical Learning Outcomes In A Community/Public Health Nursing Course Through An International Immersion Experience, Brandy E. Strahan
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
International clinical immersion experiences are valuable in that students are exposed to diverse cultures and ways of living, but these experiences can also provide an unconventional setting for clinical learning and the opportunity for culturally congruent care. Research has shown international immersion experiences to be beneficial in providing students comparison of U.S. health care systems to international systems, collaborate and form symbiotic partnerships with other institutions and providers, and share knowledge related to specific healthcare disparities. These experiences also enhance professional and personal development, enrich the understanding of healthcare concepts, and validate global citizenship. Clearly, international immersion experiences offer valid …

Meeting The Bereavement Needs Of Older Adults With Cognitive Challenges, Terry Glendinning
Counseling
Approximately 5.5 million people in the United States are living with cognitive challenges such as Alzheimer's and other dementias. People with cognitive challenges, following the death of a loved one, often experience unacknowledged grief. This paper first describes grief as it occurs in older adults who are not cognitively challenged. This is followed by a review of literature focusing on the grief of older adults with cognitive challenges. The project looks at methods for accommodating the cognitive and communication needs of this population as they work through their grief process.

Disarticulating ‘Fatness’: Design Activism And The Counter-Hegemonic Practices Of Co-Designing Clothing With Plus-Size Women, Chad Story, Ben Barry, Sandra Tullio-Pow, Sam Abel, Kirsten Schaefer
Nordes Conference Series
This paper provides analysis from a participatory design project wherein an intersectional group of women co-designed clothing intended to meet the aesthetic, functional, emotional, and symbolic needs of plus-size bodies (20+). The work of the collective is as much an exercise in fashion co-design as it is a defiant act of activism intended to dissolve, displace, and contest normative categories used to articulate some bodies as beautiful, desirable, and accepted, and others as failed, ugly, and/or sick. We build upon the concept of articu-lation to consider how co-design, in the spirit of activism, might be taken up as a counter-hegemonic …
Architect/ Designer As ‘Urban Agent’: A Case Of Mediating Temporary Use In Cities, Hella Hernberg, Ramia Mazé
Architect/ Designer As ‘Urban Agent’: A Case Of Mediating Temporary Use In Cities, Hella Hernberg, Ramia Mazé
Nordes Conference Series
In recent years, urban transformations have required new work approaches and roles for architects and designers. These expand beyond the design of physical objects, buildings or urban plans, to include the mediation of more complex and controversial processes and collaborations. Negotiation among various kinds of actors has become central, and this challenges traditional expert roles and power relations in architecture and design. This paper draws upon two cases of professional experience and ‘research through design’ to elaborate the role and work of architects/ designers in mediating the temporary use of space. Temporary use is becoming a central and strategic component …
Why Does ”Participatory” Make Me Shiver? Proposing A Decolonial Practice For Participatory Work, Marika Hedemyr
Why Does ”Participatory” Make Me Shiver? Proposing A Decolonial Practice For Participatory Work, Marika Hedemyr
Nordes Conference Series
Colonial practices often come unnoticed with participatory projects that involve people, places and economics. There are complex power structures involved, and nuances of ethics at play. But how to address this complexity in a constructive manner? By explicitly drawing on a convergence between the challenges addressed by participatory art and participatory design, I propose a postcolonial perspective as a valuable critical practice for understanding the dynamic power structures in participatory projects. In order to decolonise a participatory project I suggest a set of concrete questions that can be asked regularly. To be the killjoy that points to the less flattering …
Indiscipline: A Manifesto For Opening Graphic Design Futures, Inês Veiga
Indiscipline: A Manifesto For Opening Graphic Design Futures, Inês Veiga
Nordes Conference Series
“Indiscipline” is a manifesto to pry open the everyday and imaginary of graphic designers. An invitation to free explorations and performative transformations of visual designs and acts of designing beyond the visual. Through the happenings of four case study experiments, this paper reflects on the issues raised by a crucial manifesto in the history of graphic design. The “First Things First” manifesto published in 1964 and later revisited in 2000, serve as medium and material for an open-ended discussion on practices of communication and activism by design in the changing landscape of design research and industry relations, production and culture.

The Cross-Cultural Experiences Of Saudi Sojourners In The United States: A Study Of Intrapersonal Identity Conflict, Ahmed M. Asfahani Ph.D.
Journal of Interdisciplinary Conflict Science
What are the cross-cultural experiences of Saudi sojourners studying in the United States that lead to intrapersonal identity conflict? Sojourner identity conflict is a foundational issue in culture shock and can promote or limit positive relationships between Saudi and American students. It is important to study Saudi sojourners’ cultural backgrounds and the factors that inhibit or promote assimilation into their host culture to ensure the success of cultural exchange through providing data needed to learn how to best ameliorate the dissonance caused by identity conflict. By employing a phenomenological approach, this research provides findings relating to acculturation strategies of sojourners …

Role Of Civil Society Organizations In Conflict Resolution And Peacebuilding In Ghana, Abdul Karim Issifu Mr
Journal of Interdisciplinary Conflict Science
Ghana is both locally and internationally described as an oasis of peace and stability on a continent circumvented by conflicts. The country has not experienced any form of large-scale violence or civil war since independence in March 1957. Nevertheless, it is faced with pockets of relative violence, including chieftaincy conflict and land dispute, killing several people and destroying many properties. In an effort to help resolve these conflicts, the Ghanaian government ends up prolonging it due to its position in some of the conflicts. However, the review of secondary data revealed that many of the conflicts in Ghana have often …

“They Teach You How To Weather The Storm, But They Don’T Teach You How To Dance In The Rain:” Veterans’ Perspectives On The Pathways To Criminal Justice Involvement, Kelli E. Canada, Clark Peters
Qualitative Criminology (QC)
"Some veterans face elevated risk of mental illness, alcohol, and drug use, and difficulty adjusting post-deployment, which can increase the risk of homelessness and contact with the criminal justice system (Elbogen et al., 2012). This study adds to the limited and mixed findings regarding factors associated with criminal offending among veterans. It explores, from veterans’ perspectives, what contributes to their criminal justice involvement. In-depth interviews with 28 U.S. Veterans on probation or parole explored their military service, mental health, and the events surrounding arrests. Findings indicate that substance use was a significant contributor to arrests. Alcohol and drugs were used …

Key Influence Factors For Ocean Freight Forwarders Selecting Container Shipping Lines Using The Revised Dematel Approach, Tien-Chun Ho, Rong-Her Chiu, Cheng-Chi Chung, Hsuan-Shih Lee
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
More than 80% of container traffic in the global container shipping market in recent years is derived from ocean freight forwarders (OFFs). It raises concern about the OFFs' role in coordinating the services between container shipping lines (CSLs) and shippers. Most previous studies did not distinguish the identity of shippers among OFFs, direct shippers, and routing order exporters. There have been some studies examining the factors for OFFs selecting CSLs by the method of decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory analysis (DEMATEL), but the initial direct relationship matrix may not have convergence to zero in the original version of DEMATEL. Moreover, …
