Social Work: School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Other Works

Concern about spatial access to food retailers and its relationship to household food security has increased in recent years, placing greater importance on understanding how proximity to food retailers is related to household food consumption. Using data from the Michigan Recession and Recovery Study (MRRS), a panel survey of working‐age adults in the Detroit Metropolitan Area, this article explores whether access to the food retailers is associated with food insecurity. We use unique data about food retailers in metropolitan Detroit to develop an array of food retailer access measures that account for distance to nearest retailer, density of retailers, commute …

"Staying Alive" - The Plight Of Our Older Homeless In Syracuse, New York, Yuying Wei Aug 2017

"Staying Alive" - The Plight Of Our Older Homeless In Syracuse, New York, Yuying Wei

Theses - ALL

The purpose of this project is to explore the services needed by elders

who first became homeless in later life. The U.S. Census Bureau projects

the elderly homeless population will increase by 33 percent by 2020.

Compared with younger counterparts, older homeless people are more

isolated and refuse to use traditional services. Findings from surveys,

observations and interviews suggest mobile outreach is an efficient

strategy to reach out to homeless people. For my design, I focused on

creating a mobile service system to help later life older homeless persons

to connect to the housing and services and then assisting them …

How Could We Transform Eating Alone Into More Of A Social Experience?, Ran Jing Aug 2017

How Could We Transform Eating Alone Into More Of A Social Experience?, Ran Jing

Theses - ALL

Studies have revealed that living alone and eating alone lead to negative psy- chological impacts on older adults such

as feeling of loneliness, and nutrition problems such as apathy about the food and decreases in food consumption. I am studying the behavior of elders’ to- ward food by comparing their behavior while eating alone vs eating in groups. Elders living alone in an independent housing facility were interviewed and four of them completed surveys on food choice, dietary patterns and food related activities. Research results have shown that elders are less motivated to embrace food activities when they eat alone. …

State Reform And Respect For The Rights Of The Disabled People: A Reflection On The Olmstead Decision The Case Of New York State, Roseanne L. Flores

Publications and Research

Individuals with serious mental illness are often forced to live in institutional settings which limit their freedom and rights to become fully integrated into the community. The Olmstead v. L.C., 527 U.S. 581 (1999) decision ruled that states must provide individuals with disabilities the opportunity to live in the most integrated settings based on their needs. Since that time several lawsuits have been filed on behalf of individuals with disabilities against states for failing to comply with the Olmstead decision. New York State is one such state. The purpose of this paper is to describe the lawsuit which was brought …

Informal Advocacy As A Way To Deep Learning: Brief Survey Of Two Undergraduate Classroom Activities, Dean D. Vondras Aug 2017

Informal Advocacy As A Way To Deep Learning: Brief Survey Of Two Undergraduate Classroom Activities, Dean D. Vondras

Perspectives In Learning

To enhance engagement and deepen learning in undergraduate courses that focus on adult development and aging, two informal advocacy classroom activities were created and surveyed. The surveys were brief empirical assessments of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) activities, and contained closed- and open-ended questions. The first study investigated a PBL activity that addressed public policy and health care issues encountered by older adults and their families, and required students to create a detailed advocacy position supporting either the perspective of college students and young adults, or of a special group of older adults (e.g., cognitively impaired, chronically ill, etc). Results from Study …

Psychological Well-Being’S Link With Cardiovascular Health In Older Adults, Julia K. Boehm, Jackie Soo, Ying Chen, Emily S. Zevon, Rosalba Hernandez, Donald Lloyd-Jones, Laura D. Kubzansky Aug 2017

Psychological Well-Being’S Link With Cardiovascular Health In Older Adults, Julia K. Boehm, Jackie Soo, Ying Chen, Emily S. Zevon, Rosalba Hernandez, Donald Lloyd-Jones, Laura D. Kubzansky

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

Introduction

Favorable cardiovascular health (FCH) is associated with healthy longevity and reduced cardiovascular mortality risk. However, limited work has investigated the distribution of FCH in older age or considered the antecedents of FCH. Based on prior work linking psychological well-being with cardiovascular endpoints, higher psychological well-being was hypothesized to be associated with increased likelihood of maintaining FCH over time.

Methods

Data were from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing. The first study wave (2002–2003) included men and women aged ≥50 years. The analytic sample (N=4,925) was restricted to individuals without baseline cardiovascular disease and with clinical data from three follow-ups …

Strategies To Improve Interdisciplinary Communication In An Acute Care Inpatient Pediatric Unit, Sarah Thompson, Haley Pelletier, Barbara Bush Children's Hospital-Inpatient, Maine Medical Center, Suneela Nayak, Ruth Hanselman, Stephen Tyzik Aug 2017

Strategies To Improve Interdisciplinary Communication In An Acute Care Inpatient Pediatric Unit, Sarah Thompson, Haley Pelletier, Barbara Bush Children's Hospital-Inpatient, Maine Medical Center, Suneela Nayak, Ruth Hanselman, Stephen Tyzik

MaineHealth Maine Medical Center

Interdisciplinary patient rounding has been shown to improve patient and family satisfaction as well as reduce patient length of stay and readmission rates. In an acute care inpatient pediatric unit, baseline metrics demonstrated that 100% of the time, nursing was not included in these rounds thus resulting in sub optimal communication.

The goal of this performance improvement project was to attain increased nursing participation. Data collection demonstrated several reasons for lack of participation and corrective actions were instituted. After undertaking this KPI goal and utilizing operational excellence, 95% of the time, nurses were called to morning rounds with the medical …

Tying It All Together With High Impact Learning Through Interdisciplinary Healthcare Simulation, Elizabeth Sloan Davidson, Jeffrey K. Carmack, Sara K. Fruechting, Leigh Snead Aug 2017

Tying It All Together With High Impact Learning Through Interdisciplinary Healthcare Simulation, Elizabeth Sloan Davidson, Jeffrey K. Carmack, Sara K. Fruechting, Leigh Snead

General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)

There is a gap of knowledge on what is best practice for conducting large-scale simulation for interdisciplinary education. Currently, bringing multiple disciplines together to learn how to work in a collaborative manner in order to achieve the best outcomes for patients has been initiated in the healthcare world, but this modality is still relatively new to education, particularly in undergraduate disciplines. Best practice should involve undergraduate and graduate education in the healthcare disciplines learning to work together prior to these healthcare practitioners going into the workforce. Patient safety is the top priority for all healthcare disciplines, so a proactive approach …

Delirium Reduction Strategies For The Critically Ill, June Chaves, Sam Canonico, Will Cheney, Tammy Corey, Gil Fraser, Alex Kowalewski, Jen Low, Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, Haley Pelletier, Cathy Palleschi, Stephen Tyzik, Suneela Nayak, Ruth Hanselman

MaineHealth Maine Medical Center

Delirium, an acute and fluctuating disturbance of consciousness and cognition, is a common manifestation of acute brain dysfunction in critically ill patients. Patients with delirium have longer hospital stays and a lower 6-month survival rate than do patients without delirium. Preliminary research suggests that delirium may be associated with cognitive impairment that persists months to years after discharge.

In a large acute care hospital, the cardiac intensive care staff became interested in mitigating their unit’s high delirium rate of ventilated patients. At baseline, many members of the healthcare team did not believe that delirium could be prevented and the predominant …
