Meeting The Challenge Of Burnout, Christina Maslach Phd
Meeting The Challenge Of Burnout, Christina Maslach Phd
Symposium Presentations Archives
There is growing evidence of the challenge that burnout poses for everyone in health care. But what is the evidence about the causes of burnout, and how can that be translated into effective solutions? Innovative answers to this challenge need to focus more on how to change critical sources of burnout within the job context, rather than simply helping people cope with the negative effects. These proposed solutions must be implemented and evaluated systematically, in order to establish what are truly the best practices for beating burnout. Such an approach will lead to a better vision of healthy workplaces for …

Equine-Facilitated Therapy And Trauma: Current Knowledge, Future Needs., Marlys Staudt, Donna J. Cherry
ETSU Faculty Works
Equine-facilitated therapy (EFT) is a relatively new treatment for trauma and PTSD. EFT as well as animal assisted interventions in general have been introduced and implemented in mental health treatment for children and adults, though the research in support of these interventions has not kept up with practice. The purpose of this review is to examine the use of EFT for clients suffering from trauma/PTSD. Studies were included if PTSD/trauma was assessed and/or was measured as an outcome. A search of relevant databases resulted in nine peer-reviewed studies that met criteria. Studies are summarized and implications for future research are …

Integrating A Trauma-Informed Care Perspective In Baccalaureate Social Work Education: Guiding Principles, Matthew L. Vasquez, Shamra Boel-Studt
Faculty Publications
Over the past decade, there has been substantial growth in empirical evidence supporting that proper assessment and treatment of trauma using evidence-based practices can effectively reduce a wide range of symptoms in both children and adults. Given the complex nature of trauma treatment, trauma-based educational programming in social work is most commonly found at the graduate level. Yet, to date, there has been little discussion calling for the inclusion of trauma content in BSW education. In this paper, we examine the current state of trauma-content inclusion in social work education, and offer a guiding framework for integrating core trauma content …

You Learn What You Live: Prevalence Of Childhood Adversity In The Lives Of Juveniles Arrested For Sexual Offenses, Jill S. Levenson, Michael Baglivio, Kevin T. Wolff, Nathan Epps, William Royall, Katherine C. Gomez, Dahlia Kaplan
Publications and Research
Social workers often find themselves working with children or adolescents who have been victims of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), including youths who have ended up in the juvenile justice system. Childhood trauma has been linked to negative health, mental health, and behavioral outcomes across the lifespan. The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence rates of child maltreatment and household dysfunction in the lives of juveniles who have been arrested for sexual offenses (JSO; n = 6,549). ACE prevalence rates for JSOs were compared by gender to juveniles arrested for other crimes, to adults arrested for sexual offenses, …

Religion And Esotericism Among Students: A Crosscultural Comparative Study, Franz Höllinger, Timothy B. Smith
Religion And Esotericism Among Students: A Crosscultural Comparative Study, Franz Höllinger, Timothy B. Smith
Faculty Publications
Analyzing the results of a study on religious and esoteric beliefs and practice among university students from five European and five American countries, we found that the level of religiousness of students depends very much on their cultural environment: the level of religiosity and esoteric beliefs is significantly higher among North- and South-American students than among European students. On the other hand, Asian spiritual techniques and esoteric methods of healing are practiced more frequently by students in North-Western European countries. In the second part of the paper, we examine the relationship between academic discipline and religious worldviews. According to our …

Our Interprofessional Partnership: The Psychiatric Hospitalization Of An Lvad (Left Ventricular Assist Device) Patient, Cathy Peters
Biennial Convention (CONV)
Our interprofessional partnership in caring for an LVAD patient was a historic event in our university hospital. The severity of our patient's mental health issues was such that he could not be safely managed on a cardiac unit. A transfer to inpatient psychiatry ensued, which resulted in successful outcomes.

Sociology
This chapter presents the experiences of undergraduate students at Jesuit colleges and universities in the United States based on interviews with twenty-five enrolled students at six of the twenty-eight private, nonprofit Jesuit colleges and universities in the U.S. who were undocumented at the time of the interview. The six schools include two in the western region of the U.S., two in the Midwest, and two in the East. Together, the six institutions represent the breadth and diversity of Jesuit institutions, from a research university with undergraduate and graduate programs, a law school, and a medical school, to an undergraduate focused …
