Educating Occupational Therapists In The Use Of Theory And Evidence To Enhance Supervision Practice, Melanie J. Roberts, Deborah Fitzgerald, Matthew Molineux
Educating Occupational Therapists In The Use Of Theory And Evidence To Enhance Supervision Practice, Melanie J. Roberts, Deborah Fitzgerald, Matthew Molineux
The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy
This paper describes the implementation of a unique learning experience aimed at enhancing the quality of supervision practice in occupational therapy at the Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service. The package was designed by experienced occupational therapy educators based on adult, blended, and flipped learning approaches with content developed following administration of a standardized tool and semi-structured interviews. The learning package focused particularly on the logistics of supervision and the use of occupational therapy theory and evidence with supervision. The training for supervising therapists included a workshop and pre and post workshop learning activities. This collaborative research approach to designing …
Master’S Of Occupational Therapy Student Perceptions Of Creative Thinking Across The Academic Program, Angela K. Boisselle, Mary F. Baxter
Master’S Of Occupational Therapy Student Perceptions Of Creative Thinking Across The Academic Program, Angela K. Boisselle, Mary F. Baxter
The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy
This study was part of a larger study to describe how master’s of occupational therapy (MOT) students define and perceive their own creative thinking across the academic program. This study involved a cross-sectional quantitative study based on the self-reflective creative thinking surveys completed by the MOT students at Texas Woman’s University (N = 136). Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to reduce a large number of variables by finding which variables are redundant and measuring the same construct. The PCA resulted in three new components accounting for 68% of the variance. Three ANOVAs were conducted to explore possible differences in …

Psychometric Properties Of The Make My Day Tool To Assess Perceived Performance Of Children’S Daily Activities, Liron Or, Tsameret Ricon
The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy
Background: No instrument with strong psychometric qualities exists to measure occupational performance in young children through child-reporting. We investigated the reliability and validity of the Make My Day (MMD) tool for children aged 4 to 7 years and their parents.
Method: We administered a demographic questionnaire, the MMD, and two other tools having similar objectives to a sample of 75 typically-developing Jewish-Israeli children aged 4 to 7 years and their parents. For internal consistency, we pooled the data with those from our earlier study involving 62 typically-developing Arab-Israeli children.
Results: The MMD exhibited acceptable to good internal …

Perceptions Of Macro Social Work Education: An Exploratory Study Of Educators And Practitioners, Katharine M. Hill, Christina Erickson, Linda Plitt Donaldson, Sondra J. Fogel, Sarah M. Ferguson
Faculty Authored Articles
Social work graduate education is responsive to and reflective of larger environmental forces, including economic and job market trends, regulations by diverse organizations, and student interests. A national online survey of macro social work educators (n=208) and macro social work practitioners (n=383) explored their perceptions of the intersections between these forces and graduate social work education. Findings indicate that while there remains a consistent level of support for and inclusion of macro social work within MSW programs from both groups, macro practitioners identified a concurrent experience of negative perceptions, attitudes, and experiences toward macro social work education while in their …

Leadership within the social work academic setting is unique and complex. Understanding the way in which faculty members experience the leadership qualities of their academic leaders is a necessary precursor to effective leadership development. This article reports on the quantitative data from a mixed-methods, nationwide survey exploring social work faculty perceptions of the leadership qualities of their academic programs' leaders.

Oldowan Stone Tools And Hominin Cognition, Brittney Highland
Anthropology Undergraduate Senior Theses
The manufacturing of Oldowan stone tools marks a significant first step in human technological adaptation as part of the larger story of human evolution. Stone tools allow manipulation of the environment in a manner not capable by human ancestors’ “tooth and claw,” or biology, and just as importantly stone tool manufacture and use changes selective pressures related to cognition and learning. These cognitive/technological abilities drove the members of the genus Homo to become one of the most flexibly adaptive creatures on the planet. Examination of the evolution of human cognition and pedagogy allows for a more complete understanding of the …

The Importance Of Differentiated Leadership And Leading For Equity In Higher Education: How Higher Education Transformed My Life, Denver J. Fowler
Journal of Contemporary Research in Education
Statistically speaking, I should have become a lot of things I am not. I grew up homeless (low socio-economic status), lived in battered women shelters (witness to domestic abuse), fatherless (single-parent household), was a father at 16 years old (teen pregnancy), attended six different elementary schools in four different states (California, Texas, Ohio, and Tennessee) by the time I was in fifth grade (student mobility), and was the first in my family to graduate from college (first- generation college student). A quick search on research with regards to any one of these demographics or characteristics will yield statistics on who …

Transforming Thinking Transforms Lives, Amy K. Fisher
Transforming Thinking Transforms Lives, Amy K. Fisher
Journal of Contemporary Research in Education
One way that higher education transforms lives is by fostering the development of cognitive complexity in students. This development is demonstrated in many ways in the classroom, and can be explained using the Perry Scheme of Intellectual and Ethical Development. Cognitive complexity is imperative for the helping professions, and students who develop complexity will be better able to facilitate complex changes in clients. Additionally, this kind of development can result in dramatic changes in the students’ own lives, which can lead to transformation at all levels of society.

Bringing About Fullness Of Life With Care And Compassion: Learnings From The Social Enterprise Of The Good Shepherd Sisters, Julius B. Lunar
Bringing About Fullness Of Life With Care And Compassion: Learnings From The Social Enterprise Of The Good Shepherd Sisters, Julius B. Lunar
Center for Business Research and Development
One of the principles of the Church’s social teachings is integral human development. In his encyclical, Populorum Progressio, Pope Paul VI stated that “authentic human development is the development of the whole human being and of all human beings.” The importance of individuals as human beings is also rooted in the conviction of St. Mary Euphrasia Pelletier, foundress of the Good Shepherd Sisters, who kept reminding her daughters that “a person is of more value than the whole world.”
The Integral Human Development Approach guides the business model of the Mountain Maid Training Center (MMTC) in Baguio, which is a …

Giving Credit: How Well Do Librarians Cite And Quote Their Sources?, Peter Genzinger, Deborah Wills
Library Publications
The practice of citing references is integral to scholarship. This paper focuses on three prominent journals for library science: College and Research Libraries, Library Resources and Technical Services, and Reference and User Services Quarterly. Errors in both citations and quotations were found in all three journals, although no statistically significant differences among journals were discovered. Citation errors of less than 10 percent were found for all three journals, while in total, 30.3 percent of quotations were judged to be questionable in some way. The paper includes recommendations for authors, editors and librarians. It also recommends further study of errors in …
