Nursing Health Care Leadership Strategies To Reduce Homeless Patient 30-Day Readmission Rates, Shavonda L. Greene
Nursing Health Care Leadership Strategies To Reduce Homeless Patient 30-Day Readmission Rates, Shavonda L. Greene
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractAdult homeless patient 30-day readmission is a concern for nursing healthcare leaders who still have problems in providing effective strategies for revisit reduction in various acute care settings across the United States. The purpose of this quantitative comparative study was to examine the association between nursing healthcare leadership strategies, 30-day homeless patient readmission rates, and hospital discharge rates at hospitals in California. The theoretical foundation for the research study was Pender’s health promotion model theory, which identifies preventative health measures and describes the critical function of nurses in helping patients to prevent illness by self-care and bold alternatives. Research questions …
Hysterectomy And Self-Esteem Among African American Women, Gibson T. Green
Hysterectomy And Self-Esteem Among African American Women, Gibson T. Green
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractOver 600,000 hysterectomies are performed each year in the United States. Studies have shown that African American women are disproportionately impacted by hysterectomy and that most African American women treated with hysterectomy are young and of childbearing age. As a result, some African American women’s spouses have negative perceptions about the surgery. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of hysterectomy on self-esteem or satisfaction among African American women and feelings of partner rejection after a hysterectomy. Sociometer theory (the study of self-esteem) was used to examine an association between hysterectomy and self-esteem or satisfaction. The study …

Effects Of Foster Care Trauma On Foster Care Alumni’S Mental Health In Adulthood, Adrian W. Green
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Child welfare system involvement leads to foster care more for racial minority children than White children, and after exiting foster care racial minority alumni face disparate outcomes. The purpose of this generic qualitative study was to explore the effects of trauma experienced in foster care on racial minority foster care alumni’s mental health in adulthood. Trauma theory and information processing theory provided the frameworks for the study. Data were collected from semistructured interviews with eight racial minority foster care alumni age 18 and older. Findings from coding analysis indicated three themes and two subthemes. The adult mental health effects of …
Health-Related Quality Of Life For Veterans Transitioned Into Civilian Life, Vicki Ann Guerra
Health-Related Quality Of Life For Veterans Transitioned Into Civilian Life, Vicki Ann Guerra
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Texas veterans transitioning to civilian life have experienced health issues after discharge. There are processes to follow before seeking treatment or diagnosis for any health issue prior to military discharge. Given the gaps in the literature on veteran health, quality of life and transition to civilian life, scholars lack understanding of the transitional events that take place. Veteran health issues are impacted by medical appointment wait-times, day to day life events, and this can lead to decreased quality of life. The purpose of this mixed-methods study (N=36) was to evaluate veterans’ health related quality of life who had transitioned from …
The Lived Experiences And Perceptions Of Young Adults Who Have Transitioned Out Of State Or Other Care, Linda Rose Ross
The Lived Experiences And Perceptions Of Young Adults Who Have Transitioned Out Of State Or Other Care, Linda Rose Ross
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractOver 20,000 young adults are released from state care annually and 100,000 young adults are released from justice centers. Past studies have revealed that young adults 18-24 years of age transitioning out of care are not prepared for independent living and may face many adversities. The problem is that young adults have difficulties finding permanent housing once emancipated from state care, their biological homes, or juvenile justice centers. The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions and experiences of young adults 18-24 years of age and how their experiences and life skills helped on their journey to acquire …
Empathy-Based Strain Among Social Workers Working With Couples Experiencing Infidelity, Jared And Rachel Taylor
Empathy-Based Strain Among Social Workers Working With Couples Experiencing Infidelity, Jared And Rachel Taylor
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) social workers engaged in the practice of couples therapy often work with the issue of infidelity, which can be traumatizing to clients. EFT relies heavily on empathy-based interventions that allow the therapist to experience the pain of clients in the process of facilitating the repair of a couple's attachment bond. Yet the nature of EFT with infidelity can increase social workers’ risk of developing empathy-based strain (EBS), which can lead to personal and professional detriment and practice that harm clients. The purpose of this study was to identify and describe how social workers who practice EFT …
Cultural Responsiveness In Policing, Stacy Berry Workman
Cultural Responsiveness In Policing, Stacy Berry Workman
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Over the last decade, headlines have highlighted police-citizen conflicts. With the continuing change in communities to an increasingly diverse population, communication and interactions between officers and citizens must progress towards fairness and transparency. The delivery of culturally competent public safety services facilitates more favorable client outcomes, more effective interpersonal communication, and increased service satisfaction from clients. Although this is heavily stressed in public safety agencies and can decrease the possibility of tort liability for failing to provide adequate services or appropriate treatment, the emphasis varies. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the policies and influences of law …
Child Welfare Workers’ Development Of Cultural Competency For Clients In Poverty, Rachel Armstead
Child Welfare Workers’ Development Of Cultural Competency For Clients In Poverty, Rachel Armstead
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Children of families living in poverty are at a higher risk of being victims of child maltreatment than children of families not living in poverty. Many families involved in the child welfare system live in poverty and have low socioeconomic status. The National Association of Social Workers requires all social workers to have a level of cultural awareness, knowledge, and skill to engage clients from diverse cultures. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore child welfare workers’ understanding of cultural competence and their implementation of culturally sensitive practices as they engage clients living in poverty. Bacote’s cultural competence …

Mentoring Underrepresented Black Male Students In Science, Technology, Engineering, And Math, Keith A. Carter
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractUnderrepresented Black men entering the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) career fields are expected to receive fewer than 6% of all bachelor’s degrees awarded in these fields. In addition, a lack of attention has been given to social capital as a function related to increased self-efficacy obtained through minority mentoring and enrichment programs. This phenomenological study aimed to show the lived experiences of Black male undergraduate students who used STEM mentoring and enrichment programs to increase their self-efficacy and development of social capital. The theoretical framework for this study was Bandura’s theory of self-efficacy and Putman’s theory of social …

African American Youth Decline To Extend Foster Care Despite Their Needs, Rhonda Flowers-Corpening
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractIn the United States, African American children are disproportionately placed in foster care and experience a myriad of problems, including physical and emotional abuse. As a result, negative post-discharge outcomes are revealed in existing literature, such as substance abuse, unemployment, homelessness, sexual promiscuity, and mental health issues. The purpose of this generic qualitative inquiry was to explore the foster care experience from the perspective of African American foster care alumni. The goal was to understand why the decision is made not to extend foster care services, despite their ongoing needs for support and lack of preparation for adulthood. Ecological Systems …

North Carolina Cps Social Worker Self-Efficacy With Legal Aspects, Michelle E. Bates
North Carolina Cps Social Worker Self-Efficacy With Legal Aspects, Michelle E. Bates
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
North Carolina has the infrastructure to investigate the allegations of child abuse and neglect. However, the problem is that during the investigation, not all children have risk and safety evaluated. Assessing for risk and safety determines the child’s immediate or future need for legal interventions. The purpose of this basic qualitative inquiry was to explore CPS social workers’ self-efficacy with legal aspects when completing abuse and neglect investigations in rural counties in North Carolina. Albert Bandura’s theory of self-efficacy was the theoretical framework used to explain the phenomenon in this study. The research questions were: (a) What are the perceptions …

The Lived Experiences Of Group Practice Ownership By Female Licensed Professional Counselors, Ashley Garrett
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The U.S. counseling profession is mostly female, with many practitioners interested in starting their own business. However, little is known about women’s lived experiences of owning a group counseling practice. An interpretative phenomenological analysis approach was used to explore the lived experiences of six female licensed professional counselors who have owned a group counseling practice for at least 5 years. Phenomenology and feminist theory provided a framework for the study. Eight themes emerged from the study: (a) factors associated with the decision to create a group practice, (b) a continuum of preparatory engagement for group practice ownership, (c) the influence …
Vicarious Trauma Experienced By Human Trafficking Victim Service Providers, V'Hesspa Glenn
Vicarious Trauma Experienced By Human Trafficking Victim Service Providers, V'Hesspa Glenn
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Human trafficking involves the commercial exploitation of others for labor or sexual purposes and is underreported, underdetected, and underprosecuted. Vicarious trauma is described as negative reactions to working with individuals experiencing complex trauma and includes changes in helping professionals’ self and disruptions in cognitive schemas, identities, memories, and belief systems about others and the world. Many researchers have explored various aspects of human trafficking and secondary trauma in trauma-exposed helping professionals, but there is a dearth of qualitative literature that explored vicarious trauma in human trafficking victim service providers. The research question and purpose of this qualitative, interpretative phenomenological study …

Why Franchisors Recruit Franchisees From The Ranks Of Their Employees, Peter Balsarini, Claire Lambert, Maria M. Ryan
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
A shortage of suitable franchisees has long plagued the Australian franchise industry impacting franchisors’ capacity to grow their chains. This exploratory research identifies, defines and examines an unresearched category of franchisees that of internally recruited franchisees, who prior to their franchise recruitment were employees of the franchisor. This category has previously been ignored by the literature even though estimates of some chains place the proportion of internally recruited franchisees at over 40 per cent. Employing qualitative interviews with key franchisor decision makers this research begins to address this gap. This study investigates what factors drive franchisors to recruit franchisees from …

In this study we investigated the use of team-based learning (TBL) in a reading methods course as a framework for improving student learning outcomes. TBL is an instructional approach that has been used across a variety of fields in higher education but has only recently made its way into teacher preparation programs. Using mixed methods, we compared TBL to the traditional lecture to explore whether participation in TBL affected preservice elementary teachers’ level of preparation for class, achievement …
Drugs, Ethnic Profiling, And The American Perception Of Colombian Immigrants, 1979-1990, Laurisa Sastoque
Drugs, Ethnic Profiling, And The American Perception Of Colombian Immigrants, 1979-1990, Laurisa Sastoque
Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History
This paper analyzes how the media’s portrayal of Colombian drug trafficking turned into a stigma that affected the Colombian community in the United States. By reviewing periodical sources between the years 1979-1990, this paper argues that the formation of the drug trafficking stigma stems from the media's almost exclusive portrayal of Colombians as drug traffickers, within a context of U.S.-Colombia relations that encompassed tensions regarding responsibility for the growing transnational drug problem. Ultimately, this study proves that the drug trafficking stigma for Colombian immigrants is inherently tied to how American society viewed the Colombian government’s actions in the war on …

Does U.S. Federal Employment Law Now Cover Caste Discrimination Based On Untouchability?: If All Else Fails There Is The Possible Application Of Bostock V. Clayton County, Kevin D. Brown, Lalit Khandare, Annapurna Waughray, Kenneth G. Dau-Schmidt, Theodore M. Shaw
Articles by Maurer Faculty
This article discusses the issue of whether a victim of caste discrimination based on untouchability can assert a claim of intentional employment discrimination under Title VII or Section 1981. This article contends that there are legitimate arguments that this form of discrimination is a form of religious discrimination under Title VII. The question of whether caste discrimination is a form of race or national origin discrimination under Title VII or Section 1981 depends upon how the courts apply these definitions to caste discrimination based on untouchability. There are legitimate arguments that this form of discrimination is recognized within the concept …
