"Women and the Law Highlighted at Form"

Issues like pay equity for women, pensions and child care took center stage on the Memphis State campus in October, at a forum on "Women and the Law: Liberty and Justice for All?" Rep. Mary Rose Oakar (D-Ohio) was the forum's keynote speaker, discussing "The Federal Case—Women's Issues in the U.S. Congress." The forum was sponsored by MSU's National Alumni Association and the Economic Justice for Women Coalition, an organization of 26 Memphis women's political, religious, professional and civic groups.

Cover Story, "Buyer's Market: Brand-New Approach to Higher Education" by Susan Crawford

With enrollments leveling off, nationally, and some financially hard-pressed state governments cutting appropriations, higher education can no longer relax in its ivory tower and force the public to play according to its rules. If higher education has become a buyer's market, then perhaps the university community should employ some of the fundamentals of advertising to attract customers, and the first rule of effective advertising is to know your client. In the case of higher education, the client is the student

Cover Story, "25 years a University"

The beginning of Memphis State University's first 25 years as a university was marked on July 1, 1957, when the Tennessee Legislature's university status-granting resolution went into effect. The story of how Memphis State College became Memphis State University is worth telling this summer as we celebrate our silver anniversary as a university. Alumni who were students at the time may well remember the campaign but not know of some of the 'back room' politicking that went on. Others may learn a little more about the history behind this school.

Research To Consider While Effectively Re-Designing Child Welfare Services: A Response To Commentaries, Jill Duerr Berrick, Richard P. Barth, Antonio R. Garcia, Brett Drake, Melissa Jonson-Reid, John Gyourko, Johanna K. P. Greeson

Department of Social Work - Faculty Scholarship

Barth et al. (2021) published an article in this journal identifying ten topics in the field of child welfare that are frequently discussed among professionals, advocates, and researchers in an effort to shape discussions of practice and policy reform. Concerned that these discussions are often poorly informed by the research evidence, Barth et al. intended to offer a corrective to these common, erroneous narratives. The Editor-in-Chief, Bruce Thyer, asked for suggestions for commentators and then invited some number of respondents to offer their perspectives on the original article. Here, we respond to each of the submitted papers, highlighting areas of …

Department of Social Work - Faculty Scholarship

As a marginalized, under-resourced population, older youth with foster care experience are acutely vulnerable to the economic and social harms wrought by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This study summarizes findings from an online survey deployed in April 2020 to learn about the experiences of current and former foster youth (ages 18 to 23) during one month of the COVID-19 crisis. Using purposive sampling and a cross-sectional design, the survey yielded a final analysis sample of 281 respondents from 32 states and 192 cities or districts. Findings underscore the pervasive negative impacts of COVID-19 on respondents’ housing/living situations, food security, employment, …

Examining The Proximal Relationship Between Religious Coping And Depression Among Trauma-Exposed Adults, Emmanuel D. Thomas Jan 2022

Examining The Proximal Relationship Between Religious Coping And Depression Among Trauma-Exposed Adults, Emmanuel D. Thomas

Open Access Master's Theses

Depression is a common outcome of trauma exposure. As such, it is imperative to investigate factors that may mitigate this association. Although religious coping has been previously studied within the context of trauma, there is a dearth of research examining the potential reciprocal relationships between religious coping and depression among trauma-exposed individuals at the daily level. The current study addresses this gap in the literature by exploring the bidirectional daily relations between religious coping and depression symptoms in a community sample of trauma-exposed adults. Participants were 84 individuals with a history of sexual assault who self-identified as being religious (Mage …

Meaning Of Interpersonal Interaction And Content Mastery In Online Adult Education, Barbara Green Mcwhite Jan 2022

Meaning Of Interpersonal Interaction And Content Mastery In Online Adult Education, Barbara Green Mcwhite

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Working adult students may have difficulty mastering complex concepts when taking courses online. Researchers have argued there is a need for in-person, peer-teacher interaction available in traditional classrooms that is lacking online. The purpose of this dual-focus phenomenological study was to explore the meaning of purposeful interpersonal interaction and the experience of content mastery among undergraduate working students taking online psychology courses. Constructivism and adult learning theory guided the study. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 working adults with experience taking online psychology courses within the last 2 years. Data were analyzed using Moustakas’s guidelines. Results indicated that participants experienced …

Broadband Development In Lexington: A Study Of Access And Equity, Alex Sergent

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

Broadband equity is at the forefront of today’s issues. Those that have the ability to access the internet regularly from home are given an opportunity to participate in countless social, work, and learning opportunities that those without access must forgo. It is difficult to determine where broadband infrastructure fails. Through this study of Lexington-Fayette Urban County, it was found that connection within Urban Service Boundaries is on par with national goals, while rural areas are left out. This paper contains a descriptive analysis of the overall broadband access equity of Lexington-Fayette county.

Resistance Is Not Futile: Challenging Aapi Hate, Peter H. Huang

Publications

This Article analyzes how to challenge AAPI (Asian American Pacific Islander) hate—defined as explicit negative bias in racial beliefs towards AAPIs. In economics, beliefs are subjective probabilities over possible outcomes. Traditional neoclassical economics view beliefs as inputs to making decisions with more accurate beliefs having indirect, instrumental value by improving decision-making. This Article utilizes novel economic theories about belief-based utility, which economically captures the intuitive notion that people can derive pleasure and pain directly from their and other people's beliefs. Even false beliefs can offer comfort and reassurance to people. This Article also draws on interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary theories about …

Teaching Constitutional Law, Administrative Law, And Health Law As Presidential Administrations Change, Renée M. Landers Jan 2022

Teaching Constitutional Law, Administrative Law, And Health Law As Presidential Administrations Change, Renée M. Landers

Saint Louis University Law Journal

When elections bring about changes in the political party of the president, the shifts frequently involve a change in the philosophies that inform the approach to governing. In teaching constitutional law, administrative law, and health law, this author cautions students to consider the political content of agency actions underlying the judicial opinions studied. Examining the political and discretionary judgment government officials exercise may provide an explanation for the results or an analysis when the law does not seem to account for the agency action or court decision. This Article examines the opportunities available to an incoming administration to undo the …
