For decades, the concept of enjoyment has been used to measure the psychological benefits of activities and has been shown to determine future behavior toward activities and objects of interest. However, there has been little consensus on the definition and dimensionality of enjoyment. This study introduced a new measure of enjoyment with scale development and validation reported. CFA and EFA findings from 1466 participants across 739 different activities were reported. The instrument developed measured enjoyment across activities, with demonstrated content validity, internal consistency, discriminant and convergent validity. The final 25-item version of the ENJOY scale is composed of 5 factors: …

Kathy Palmer, Oral History Interview, 2022, Matt Jones

Oral Histories

In 2021, Eastern Michigan University Archives lecturer Matt Jones began documenting the story of Ypsilanti’s Human Rights Ordinance #1279 in an effort to explore the ways in which local queer activism has evolved multi-generationally in Ypsilanti. What began as a refusal of service by a local print shop to a small EMU student group quickly turned into a years-long battle over who was deserving of basic human rights. To the LGBTQ activists and community members documented here, they had always been present in the community: working, paying taxes, painting their houses, mowing their lawns, attending council meetings, and even serving …

A Comparative Approach To Promotional Methods For Seasonal Influenza Immunizations To Dorm Dwelling College Freshmen, Gina Aalgaard Kelly, Carolyn Townsend

Great Plains Sociologist

Introduction: Comparing tailored e-mail messaging to mailed postcards promoting seasonal influenza immunizations for dorm dwelling college freshmen is important for early health prevention and promotion. Dorm dwelling college students are particularly at risk of viral diseases due to the close proximity of their living conditions. Understanding influences with health care decisions and practices is therefore also important with the college dorm dwelling population. Method: A convenience sample was used to collect data from influenza clinic participants on a Midwest college campus over three seasonal flu periods. A Health-E card was sent in 2010 via university issued student e-mail accounts informing …

Quality Of Life In Nursing Homes: A Theoretical And Empirical Review, Gina Aalgaard Kelly Feb 2022

Quality Of Life In Nursing Homes: A Theoretical And Empirical Review, Gina Aalgaard Kelly

Great Plains Sociologist

Quality of life is a complex and multi-dimensional notion which individuals and their families try to attain. This paper provides an overview of quality of life literature guided by Lawton’s (1983: 351) “Four Sectors of the Good Life”.” This model of organization demonstrates a multidimensional conceptual view of quality of life in which theoretical and empirical domains were recognized in the literature. Parameters used to understand quality of life and how it is studied provide the framework of the review, specifically in the nursing home setting. Quality of life is of growing importance because people are living longer and population …

Using Client And Supervision Feedback To Improve Supervision In Health Care, Daryl Mahon Ba, Ma Feb 2022

Using Client And Supervision Feedback To Improve Supervision In Health Care, Daryl Mahon Ba, Ma

Counseling and Family Therapy Scholarship Review

This paper seeks to establish a conceptual model of client and supervisee feedback that can be used to improve supervision processes and outcomes in health and social care settings. Supervision is a beneficial practice development endeavor that practitioners find rewarding for various reasons. However, the impact of supervision on client outcomes in health and social care settings is scant and not all supervision is helpful; indeed, harmful and inadequate supervision is also prevalent. Using supervisory measures of the alliance between supervisor and supervisee may be one method to help improve processes and outcomes. In addition, providing client feedback to practitioners …

Definición De La Dinámica De Problemas, Clarissa Gaona Romero, Katherine Curi-Quinto, Laura Guzmán Abello, Carmen Quinteros-Reyes, Paraskevi Seferidi, Antonio Bernabe-Ortiz, Lindsey Pawlowski, Ellis Ballard

Social System Design Lab

Online Gmb: Challenges, Opportunities, And Barriers, Lucy Chin, Allie Farrell, Min Hu, Lindsey Pawlowski, Ellis Ballard

Social System Design Lab

The COVID-19 pandemic ushered in the new reality of remote working and learning, forcing group model building practitioners to make an abrupt shift to online workshops. Like our peers, the Social System Design Lab (SSDL) at Washington University in St. Louis confronted this challenge by exploring what tools existed for adaptation and continued collaboration. The shift has not been easy, but it has revealed new insights that suggest areas to leverage the strengths of online GMB long after the pandemic comes to an end.

The purpose of this brief is to provide some general points of comparison between in-person and …

Social System Design Lab

Iceberg Del Pensamiento Sistémico: Buceando Bajo La Superficie, Clarissa Gaona Romero, Laura Guzmán Abello, Carmen Quinteros-Reyes, Paraskevi Seferidi, Antonio Bernabe-Ortiz, Lindsey Pawlowski, Ellis Ballard Feb 2022

Iceberg Del Pensamiento Sistémico: Buceando Bajo La Superficie, Clarissa Gaona Romero, Laura Guzmán Abello, Carmen Quinteros-Reyes, Paraskevi Seferidi, Antonio Bernabe-Ortiz, Lindsey Pawlowski, Ellis Ballard

Social System Design Lab

Modelos Mentales, Clarissa Gaona Romero, Katherine Curi-Quinto, Laura Guzmán Abello, Carmen Quinteros-Reyes, Paraskevi Seferidi, Antonio Bernabe-Ortiz, Lindsey Pawlowski, Ellis Ballard

Social System Design Lab

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the meeting was held online over 2 days, with virtual presentations, discussions, mentoring sessions, and posters. The Latino population in the United States is projected to have the steepest increase in Alzheimer's disease (AD) in the next 40 years, compared to other ethnic groups. Latinos have increased risk for AD and other dementias, limited access to quality care, and are severely underrepresented in AD and dementia research and clinical trials. The symposium highlighted developments in AD research with Latino populations, including advances …

Church Satisfaction Among Rural Minnesota Protestant Lay Leaders, Terry E. Huffman Feb 2022

Church Satisfaction Among Rural Minnesota Protestant Lay Leaders, Terry E. Huffman

Great Plains Sociologist

This paper reports on general church satisfaction among a sample of rural Minnesota Protestant lay leaders. The author examined the relationship between the dependent variable general church satisfaction with eight independent variables divided into three dimensions of church life. Prominent findings indicate that the vitality of churches is associated with higher levels of church satisfaction among the lay leaders. Additionally, older lay leaders reported greater general satisfaction with their church than did younger lay leaders. However, church contentment is not significantly connected to the mere size of the congregation, type of denomination, gender of the lay leader, or status of …

Nations Within Nations: The Heterogeneity Of Mexican Transnationals Of Indigenous Descent From Anzalduan Lenses, David Martinez-Prieto

Bilingual and Literacy Studies Faculty Publications

This chapter analyzes the significance and limitations of utilizing Gloria Anzaldúa’s framework when examining Mexican transnational communities of Mesoamerican ancestry after they return to Mexico. In this way, this chapter calls for a better understanding of the historical and political factors that impact the identities of Mexican transnationals of Indigenous origin. Based on data collected during three investigations with transnational (pre)service teachers from Indigenous communities in the Mexican states of Puebla (2017), Tlaxcala (2017), and Oaxaca (2018), the author analyzes the pertinence of Anzaldua’s framework in understanding the subjugation and internal differences of Indigenous transnational populations. A Pandemic Road Map: Creating Social Work Student Wellness Plans In Field Placement, Susan Reay

Social Work Faculty Publications

During the unprecedented early stages of COVID-19, few protocols were established to support overall student wellness in social work field placements. In response to the overwhelming need for a contextual framework to promote wellness and determine the next steps in mitigating health risks, faculty developed a unique solution in a dynamic situation. Rooted in the university-sponsored dimensions of wellness, BSW and MSW students developed wellness plans that were integrated into the field placement course. These plans were intended to enhance students' ability to evaluate their well-being and encourage them to plan wellness activities. The wellness plan was critical in determining …
