Factors Determining Attraction Of Neurodivergent Applicants To Organizations, Barri Levitt May 2022

Factors Determining Attraction Of Neurodivergent Applicants To Organizations, Barri Levitt

Senior Honors Papers / Undergraduate Theses

Neurodivergence is used to describe a broad range of neurodevelopmental differences that result in a distinct set of challenges for individuals in interacting with the world around them. Within Diversity, Equity and Inclusion campaigns, neurodiversity is the term used to describe the composition of a space to include neurodivergent and neurotypical individuals. The unique perspectives that come from workplace neurodiversity are a valuable tool, yet companies are routinely missing out on the addition of neurodivergent individuals because of current hiring practices. This study was developed using the theoretical bases of person-organization fit, which emphasizes value congruence between organizations and employees, …

I, Object, Shanee Gordon May 2022

I, Object, Shanee Gordon

Theses

I, Object is a 3D animated film which dives into the difference between intrinsic value and perceived value, both by an individual and by society, through an anthropomorphized world where household objects must do what they can to survive the onslaught of a depressed, do-it-yourself, divorcee. Following the mockumentary format, these objects are interviewed about the situation they find themselves in. The different personalities and dynamics between the characters brings a comedic element to an otherwise serious encounter. Opening with how the situation has progressed until the moment the filming crew arrived, the film jumps between characters but sticks to …

The Effects Of Access To Safe Abortion Methods On Women’S Health And Employment, Azka Imran May 2022

The Effects Of Access To Safe Abortion Methods On Women’S Health And Employment, Azka Imran

Theses and Dissertations

Abortion remains highly legally restricted in many developing countries, constraining women to unsafe providers. As of 2019, 23,000 women die each year due to unsafe abortions in low- and middle-income countries. These deaths are almost entirely preventable with universal access to safer abortion methods. In 2006, some regions in Peru, a country that legally restricts abortion except to preserve the mother’s life, adopted a harm-reduction approach to address this health issue within their legal framework. The model works by providing information on safely terminating a pregnancy using misoprostol, a drug generally prescribed by a gastroenterologist but available to women on …

A Qualitative Descriptive Study Of The Experiences Of Nurse Educators In Developing And Implementing Concurrent Enrollment Adn-Bsn Programs, Janice E. Hawkins

Dissertations

Nursing leaders have called for more bachelor-of-science-in-nursing-(BSN)-prepared nurses to meet workforce demands. There is limited capacity in BSN programs to meet the projected demand. Currently, associate degree in nursing (ADN) programs produce the majority of registered nurses. To increase the number of BSN graduates, nurse educators recommend innovative educational models for seamless progression from the ADN to the BSN. Concurrent enrollment ADN-BSN programs offer one potential model to produce more BSN graduates. The purpose of this study was to describe the process of developing and implementing concurrent enrollment ADN-BSN programs. The research question was as follows: What is the experience …

The Case For Oer As The Advancement Of Knowledge/Creative Expression, Amber Dierking, Matt Ruen, Steven Schlicker

Library Reports and Communication

The nature of scholarly and creative activity, at Grand Valley State University and across the higher education sector, is rapidly evolving. Amidst this ongoing transformation, the characteristics of OER – free access plus permission for adaptation – empower Grand Valley’s teacher-scholars to share their expertise with a global audience and simultaneously remove barriers to education for Lakers.

This memo, submitted for consideration by the University Academic Senate at GVSU, argues that the creation of OER can demonstrate several of the forms of scholarly activity described by Boyer (1990) as well as the criteria established for the Advancement of Knowledge or …

Health care professionals are at risk for developing compassion fatigue and burnout, which creates a decrease in productivity, increases the risk for medication and medical errors, and decreases the overall morale. The World Health Organization recognizes burnout to be an occupational phenomenon that results from exposure to chronic workplace stress and is a significant concern for employee and patient outcomes. The aim of this quality improvement project is to utilize mindfulness through guided imagery to reduce burnout and compassion fatigue.

Easter 1945: A Call For Christian Intellectualism, Patrick Otto, Janet George May 2022

Easter 1945: A Call For Christian Intellectualism, Patrick Otto, Janet George

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

There is an urgent need for Christian intellectualism to find its voice again. Institutions of higher education in America today are facing the onslaught of conflicting worldviews. In 1945 C.S. Lewis warned the Church about watering down the faith. In a postmodern world that is trying to be ‘good without God’, for the sake of their students and the Church, Christian educators must hold firm to scripture. There are several cultural challenges that inhibit the progress of Christian intellectualism, but if Christians learn to ‘think Christianly,’ and are “unafraid to articulate their own faith assumptions…(thereby allowing) the academic enterprise to …

Factors For Success Of International Female Doctoral Students In Science In The United States, Maria Patricia Cantu

Theses & Dissertations

Factors for Success of International Female Doctoral Students in Science in the United States

Many international doctoral female students in the sciences in the United States do not obtain a degree despite their large investment in time, effort, and financial resources. The loss of highly prepared and credentialed international female doctoral students, who have a genuine interest in science but who choose not to pursue their studies to graduation or switch careers due to real or perceived barriers, signifies such a loss not just for the women themselves and their families but for their countries of origin, their hosts universities, …

The Graduation Pipeline: Investigating The Effects Of Juvenile Justice System Contact On High School Graduation Rates, Em Sandman May 2022

The Graduation Pipeline: Investigating The Effects Of Juvenile Justice System Contact On High School Graduation Rates, Em Sandman

Master’s Theses and Projects

Contact with the juvenile justice system can seriously impact life chances for youth. System contact can lead to significant challenges by disrupting paths to traditional life attainments. Research overwhelmingly points to negative projections from juvenile system exposure. Labeling theory has been used to determine poor educational outcomes, but little work has been done to directly gauge why contact affects the graduating for system-involved students. Further, concepts of strain theory have yet to be sufficiently applied to the prospect of completing high school. Given the systematic similarities between school and the juvenile justice system, the likelihood of reaching academic expectations required …

Youth Empowerment In The Context Of Achieving The Objectives Of Sustainable Development In Egypt, Sherif Gamal, Hesham Makhlouf, Mona Khalifa

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

Although young people in Egypt (15-29) represent about 27% of the total population (Central Authority for Public Mobilization and Statistics, 2017), many studies have shown that so far this enormous human potential has not been taken advantage of and serious and effective steps have not yet been taken towards empowering young people, and until sustainable development is achieved - the post-2015 agenda associated with the empowerment of young people in Egypt, there must be young people who can and will be able to change. During the development of a national strategy for youth empowerment and activation, one of the most …

Trauma-Informed Teaching Practices Post-Covid: A Classroom Action Project, Jillian Weemaes May 2022

Trauma-Informed Teaching Practices Post-Covid: A Classroom Action Project, Jillian Weemaes

MA TESOL Collection

Out of recognition of experienced trauma, trauma-informed practices have existed in schools and classrooms long before the start of the pandemic and will continue to exist and evolve after. Programs need to evolve due to the changing nature of the pandemic such as the possibility of teachers experiencing trauma alongside their students, and distance learning complicating the ability of students to make connections with peers, teachers, and administrators. Limited literature currently exists in the field showcasing how teachers have changed and updated their practices since the start of the pandemic. The objective of this action research is to add to …

The Impacts Of Cooperative Learning In Classrooms On Student Social Skills, Joseph Larson May 2022

The Impacts Of Cooperative Learning In Classrooms On Student Social Skills, Joseph Larson

Master's Theses

This mixed-methods action research study investigates potential effects of cooperative learning strategies on observed and self-reported student social skills in a fourth grade classroom. Baseline data is collected at a time when the classroom is predominantly whole-group and is then compared to ensuing data collected during and after cooperative learning interventions. Opportunities for students to work in interdependent partnerships and small groups ramps up gradually and culminates in a 3-week period which includes 3 different jigsaw-style lesson activities. Data suggests that students who are unaccustomed to working with peers may struggle to exhibit required social skills that make cooperative learning …
