A Typology Of Foster Home Quality Elements In Relation To Foster Youth Mental Health, Paul Sorenson
A Typology Of Foster Home Quality Elements In Relation To Foster Youth Mental Health, Paul Sorenson
Dissertations and Theses
Foster care has been one of the primary interventions in society's efforts to address child maltreatment. The foster parents and foster homes follow a process of certification intended to ensure that maltreated children be placed in substitute care that supports and encourages positive outcomes. One of the outcomes of principle concern is mental health. Few studies have been conducted that explore the makeup of certified foster homes with respect to the cumulative impact of multiple indicators of quality on mental health outcomes of foster youth.
This study sought to identify a typology of foster homes based on theorized indicators of …
How Domestic Violence Affects Incarcerated Women, Michelle Ryman
How Domestic Violence Affects Incarcerated Women, Michelle Ryman
University Honors Theses
The incarceration of women has grown seven times since the 1980s, with up to 90% of incarcerated women being survivors of domestic violence. Women are five times more likely to be abused by an intimate partner. Intimate partner violence leads to unhealthy coping mechanisms like drug abuse and violence against perpetrators. While coercion in IPV can contribute to violent retaliation and drug abuse, it can also lead to criminal behavior prompted by the perpetrator. Whether IPV shows itself as violent attacks, sexual assault, coercion, financial withholding, threats, isolation, psychological abuse, or any other behavior that allows one person to control …

Foreword: Mapping Critical Geographies In Virtual Space, Shelley Cavalieri, Saru M. Matambanadzo, Lua Kamal Yuille
Denver Law Review
In this Foreword to the LatCrit Symposium, the authors introduce the work of the 2021 LatCrit Biennial Meeting. They frame the movement as one of critical and liberatory theorizing in a time of retrenchment of opposition to the antisubordination project, highlighting the many strands of Critical Legal Studies that find home in the big tent of the LatCrit community. They introduce and contextualize within the broader critical theory literature four Articles written by members of the LatCrit community. Finally, they assert their own challenge to the movement, calling on critical legal scholars to question more seriously the meritocratic and productivist …
Defining Regenerative Business Through The Context Of Place: A Case Study West Michigan Businesses, Aislinn Teachout, Aislinn Teachout
Defining Regenerative Business Through The Context Of Place: A Case Study West Michigan Businesses, Aislinn Teachout, Aislinn Teachout
Masters Theses
This study builds upon existing scholarly literature on regenerative design and regenerative sustainability by relating the framework to existing West Michigan businesses and their place-specific practices. Applying concepts from those more developed fields to business sustainability, this paper contributes to the still emerging field of regenerative business by proposing a comprehensive definition of regenerative business. The definition is then applied to three businesses in a case study format to highlight regenerative business practices. While none of the businesses highlighted claim to be regenerative, all have examples of practices that demonstrate regenerative action and enhance the West Michigan community.

Pathways From Exposure To Community Violence To Bullying Victimization Among African American Adolescents In Chicago’S Southside, Dexter R. Voisin
Pathways From Exposure To Community Violence To Bullying Victimization Among African American Adolescents In Chicago’S Southside, Dexter R. Voisin
Faculty Scholarship
The present study proposes and examines the pathways from exposure to community violence to bullying victimization through the influences of depression, exposure to peer delinquency, and drug use among 638 African American adolescents (aged 12–22) from low-resourced neighborhoods in Chicago’s Southside. The study found that African American adolescents who were exposed to community violence were likely at risk of bullying victimization, depression, exposure to peer delinquency, and drug use. Depression can heighten the risk of bullying victimization. These findings have implications for future research.

Improving Trauma-Informed Education And Parenting For Resource Parents At A Foster Care Agency., Courtney Albers
Improving Trauma-Informed Education And Parenting For Resource Parents At A Foster Care Agency., Courtney Albers
Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers
675,000 children nationwide were involved with the foster care system in 2019, and nearly all children within the foster care system are actively suffering from the effects of trauma. Resource parent trauma-informed trainings, such as Resource Parenting Curriculum (RPC) developed by The National Child Traumatic Stress Network, are associated with improved parental perceptions towards trauma-informed care, improved child outcomes, and placement stability. Foster care agencies have trauma-informed state-based curriculum, but it does not meet the needs of resource parents, specifically those caring for children with developmental delays or disorders. The project was implemented at a therapeutic foster care agency for …

Journal of Health Ethics
According to the 2021 report from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, 82.4 million people were forcibly displaced because of violence, wars, or persecution and over 26.4 million are currently living with refugee status. Displacement and resettlement trauma are associated with chronic disease onset and poor cognitive, physical, and mental health outcomes for refugee populations. To mitigate some of the deleterious effects of resettlement trauma, we propose a community-based rehabilitation program (CBRP) framework that is culturally sensitive, trauma-informed and focused on the vulnerabilities of women. The purpose of this novel CBRP framework is to address health inequities among a …

Development And Evaluation Of The Atheist Identity Concealment Scale (Aics), Paul E. Yeatts, Dena M. Abbott, Debra Mollen
Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications
The Atheist Identity Concealment Scale (AICS) was developed as a tool to assess the degree to which atheists conceal their atheist identity from others. Drawing on concealable stigmatized identity (CSI) theory, the aim of this study was to provide researchers with a valid means to effectively assess atheist identity concealment. Using three separate samples of more than 500 adults in the USA, exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted which ultimately resulted in a short, robust measure that comprised eight items. Additional validity evidence was provided by examining the relationship between the AICS and several previously validated tools (i.e., outness, …

Veterinary Reporting And Immunity Laws In The United States: How This Model Law Could Positively Impact National Veterinary Practices And International Animal Law, Rachel Al-Alami
Global Business Law Review
This Note highlights the importance of animal law, including its impact on human violence and international businesses involving animals. The issues in veterinary reporting of suspected animal abuse must be addressed, as it has a direct effect on exposing the link between animal violence and human violence. Each state is encouraged to adopt the legislation proposed by this Note; it aims to reform the laws surrounding veterinary reporting of suspected animal abuse, and it provides veterinary professionals with immunity for reporting in good faith. This Note discusses the background of animal law, including the current state of affairs for both …

What Is The State Of The Literature About Robotic Animal Use Among Older Adults Receiving Hospice Or Palliative Care?, Allyson Miles
Social Work Theses - Archive
Objective: This review aims to assess the extent of the literature on robotic pet use among older adults receivinghospice or palliative care. Introduction: In 2015, in the U.S, an estimated 1,426,00 individuals received hospice; among this population, 94.6% were aged 65 or older (National Center for Health Statistics,2019). According to the literature, a social robot is defined as something that interacts with individuals socio-emotionally during the intervention (Hudson et al., 2020). Social robots, including robotic pets, are promising technological interventions that can benefit the psychosocial health of older adults and people with dementia. Although there are previous reviews on robotic …
The Effects Of Digital Civic Engagement Training On The Political Knowledge And Internal Political Efficacy Of Social Work Students, Christian Andrew Mason
The Effects Of Digital Civic Engagement Training On The Political Knowledge And Internal Political Efficacy Of Social Work Students, Christian Andrew Mason
Social Work Theses - Archive
It is an ethical obligation for social workers to be civically engaged because the issues central to the profession, like poverty, are public issues. One widely used method to examine civic engagement is the civic voluntarism model developed by Verba et al. (1995). Furthermore, an emerging arena for civic involvement is the digital environment and its potential use as a training ground. This study was a pilot study to determine if a brief training in digital civic engagement for social work students could lead to an increase in the internal political efficacy and political knowledge of social work students. While …
‘Race’ And Academic Performance In International Higher Education: Black Africans In The U.K., Solomon Zewolde
‘Race’ And Academic Performance In International Higher Education: Black Africans In The U.K., Solomon Zewolde
Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education
U.K. higher education research routinely pinpoints the racialized nature of academic performance, but it often fails to even consider if racism contributes to such a pervasive racial or ethnic disparity. While research in the area often focuses on comparing the attainment of home white and ethnic minority students, little attention is given to the experiences of black African international students (BAIS), particularly in U.K. higher education. Using semi-structured qualitative interviews, this study documents how “race” shapes academic performance and achievement by exploring the experiences of 21 BAIS undergraduates studying in ten universities in England. Factors identified, inter alia, include racism …

The A-Word: Destigmatizing Abortion In American Culture., Kathryn Lafferty Danner
The A-Word: Destigmatizing Abortion In American Culture., Kathryn Lafferty Danner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation uses an interdisciplinary perspective and explores the topic of abortion through legal, medical, philosophical, and cultural perspectives, providing alternative ways to talk about abortion. In some states, especially since the overturning of Roe, abortion has become almost impossible to access, particularly in the South and Midwest. Abortion as a medical procedure is highly stigmatized and although it is a common procedure, it is taboo to discuss in American culture. Exploring how different media work to destigmatize abortion in the United States can lead to a deeper, more nuanced understanding of an overly politicized topic. The introduction is a …
“…You Can't Unknow It, It's A New Reality": A Case Study Exploring A Social Justice Public Health Intervention's Impact On Critical Consciousness Development In Youth., Monique Williams
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Even though public health purports to be rooted in social justice, it is not clear how social justice frameworks are integrated in public health research and intervention. The discipline focuses on groups/populations on the margins, without integrating the social and political factors that cause marginalization into the intervention. Seeing communities, and individuals, as assets and experts in their own experiences is key to population-level health improvement. Particularly for public health youth intervention, how youth are labeled and engaged in social change is critical to their healthy development. While public health lags in practically applying asset-based approaches to youth intervention, research …
Pediatric Oncology Social Work Job Analysis., Alyssa Ashlyn Middleton
Pediatric Oncology Social Work Job Analysis., Alyssa Ashlyn Middleton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is an examination of the tasks most important to the pediatric oncology social work role. It begins with an argument that pediatric oncology social work is a blend of four social work specialties: generalist medical social work, oncology social work, pediatric social work, and hospice and palliative care social work. Studies report pediatric oncology social workers feel unprepared for numerous tasks related to their role. Despite calls for increased education and training opportunities, few are available. Until now, there has been no study evaluating the tasks that pediatric oncology social workers deem most important to their role, nor …

The Online Environments Of Sexual And Gender Minority Youth: Contexts Of Risk And Resilience, Alexa Martin-Storey, Alicia A. Lapointe, Alice Girouard, Marie-Michèle Paquette, Sophie Bergeron
Journal of Family Strengths
Adolescents, in general, are spending more time in online environments, and understanding how youth navigate these contexts may be particularly important for addressing and improving outcomes among sexual and gender minority youth. Taking a developmental perspective, this review discusses online environments as contexts of both risk and resilience for youth in gender and sexual minority communities. In particular, we review literature highlighting how online environments provide a context for many salient aspects of adolescent development, including the promotion of identity development and the exploration of intimate, romantic and sexual behavior. The potential for online environments to serve as contexts for …
