Women In Academia: Representation, Tenure, And Publication Patterns In The Stem And Social Sciences Fields, Jennifer M. Krebsbach
Women In Academia: Representation, Tenure, And Publication Patterns In The Stem And Social Sciences Fields, Jennifer M. Krebsbach
Journal of International Women's Studies
Women in the workplace experience inequity in their professional career options and in their upward mobility. One place this occurs frequently is in higher education. Whether it be their representation at various levels of professorship (wherein male full professors far outweigh the number of female full professors), the interactions with others on campus (especially regarding student expectations of professors), or the expectations that are placed upon them for success (over recruitment for teaching and service to the university; under recruitment for research opportunities and grants), women in academia are finding barriers that are preventing them from succeeding at a similar …
Employee Fit, Sarah Stepanek, Megan Paul
Employee Fit, Sarah Stepanek, Megan Paul
Umbrella Summaries
What is employee fit?
Broadly defined, fit is said to be the “compatibility between individuals and organizations” (Kristof, 1996, p. 3). Early theories of fit proposed that alignment between individuals’ personalities and their environment would lead to greater personal success and happiness; for example, those with social personalities would find the greatest fulfillment in work roles involving helping people, such as a social worker or nurse (Holland, 1985). Since then, the idea of fit has been expanded to include not just alignment of personality, but also attitudes, values, preferences, needs, goals, knowledge, skills, and abilities (Kristof-Brown et al., 2005). Fit …

Despite widespread support for coordinated responses to child maltreatment, little research examines the successes and barriers faced by child advocacy centers (CACs). The current study examines perspectives on program operations within a large CAC in the Midwest across 14 focus groups, including both internal CAC staff (N =32) and external agency partners (N = 37). Universal successes and barriers were identified across all service areas. Still, the findings indicate a need to also consider the unique factors affecting each service area. The importance of these findings is discussed for those working in arenas that provide services to youth and families …

Purpose: This study aims to evaluate the perceptions of clinical social workers compared to other mental health professionals (OMHPs). Methods: This exploratory survey research evaluates the perceptions of clinical licensure from social workers (N = 519) and OMHPs (N = 624) in a midwestern state. Results: The results indicate that most respondents believe that universities should be evaluated based on whether students pass licensing exams, and that faculty should be licensed. Many social workers feel ill-prepared to take a licensing exam. There are significant differences between social workers and OMHP in several areas. Additionally, differences are distinct between …

Specialised sexual health clinics (SHCs) play an important role in addressing the staggering rates of STIs seen in many high-income nations. Despite increasing healthcare coverage in the US and nationalised health care in some countries, there is a continued need for SHCs to meet the needs of patients and the community, especially for high-priority populations: those at high risk of STI acquisition and/or groups historically marginalised and underserved in the traditional healthcare system. We need to mobilise resources to support a stronger clinical infrastructure in specialised SHCs. This review describes the importance of SHCs, their future role, and some of …

Exploring The Dimensional Structure Of A Measure Of Supervision Competence And Its Prediction Of Trainee Development, Jacqueline Davis
Exploring The Dimensional Structure Of A Measure Of Supervision Competence And Its Prediction Of Trainee Development, Jacqueline Davis
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Clinical supervision is one of the most important components of a health service psychologist’s training. Supervisors ensure the integrity of the supervisee’s services to protect the public and act as gatekeepers to the profession. Despite the importance of this professional practice, supervision training and evaluation received minimal attention until the early 2000s. There is little high-quality research on what makes supervision effective, in part due to few measures assessing supervision competence. A culture shift to competency-based training and education in health service psychology both allows for and requires improved evaluation of supervision. The current study aimed to (a) elucidate the …

Caste Matters In Public Policy: Issues And Perspectives, N Jayaram, Rahul Choragudi, Sony Pellissery
Books
Caste in India, despite its historical resilience, has been undergoing transformation since independence. If caste as a system of rigid stratification has been on the decline, castes as autonomous interest-serving groups have been on ascendance. This book critically engages with the changing notions of caste and its intersection with public policy in India. It discusses key issues such as social security, internal reservation, the idea of Most Backward Classes, caste issues among non-Hindu religious communities, caste in census, caste in market, and service castes and urban planning. Drawing on in-depth case studies from states including Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Karnataka, Punjab, …

Advancements in communication and environmental technology may mark the end of aviation as we know it. Numerous people who were forced to remain at home during the pandemic have gotten a taste of a life in which they spend more time with their immediate families and are just as productive at work. Many meetings that individuals used to travel across the nation to attend are now more commonly streamed online for their convenience. Not only that, but the ability to communicate with loved ones who live far away via Facetime and other video-calling technologies has made it possible for us …

Challenges Of Transitioning Back To School From Hospitalization: The Role Of Child Life Specialists In Schools, Kelsey Bannen
Honors Program Theses and Projects
When students return to school after hospitalization, many aspects of their development are impacted. During the transition back to school after hospitalization students often face social, emotional, and academic challenges. Child life specialists typically work in hospital settings to support the social-emotional well-being of pediatric patients. Child life specialists are highly equipped to support students returning to school after hospitalization and would be a valuable asset to all school systems. Research for this study was conducted through literature reviews, an interview with a child life specialist who is currently working within a school, and surveys of school nurses and child …

Advancing Treatment For Opioid Use Disorder In A Rural Emergency Department, Jill M. Wabbel
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Background: The opioid epidemic escalated in the United States due to the availability of prescription opioids, heroin, and synthetic opioids like fentanyl. Unfortunately, access to treatment is not always accessible, especially in rural communities with limited resources.
Local Problem: Tehama County is a rural county in northern California with limited access to treatment for opioid use disorder. The local Emergency Department (ED) and primary care-based Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) clinic collaborated to increase access. However, services remain under-actualized due to limited understanding of MAT best practices, stigma related to substance use within the ED culture, and poor articulation between the ED …

Northern Vistas: A Retrospective Of The Rural Alaskan Volunteers In Service To America Program 1965-1971, Carol Fuiten Hoefler
Arctic and Northern Studies
This thesis examines the Volunteers in Service to America program as it operated in rural Alaska from 1965 to 1971. Oral histories, correspondence from the volunteers, trainers and stakeholders offer a rich historical perspective of the program's successes and failures. Remote and underdeveloped village conditions presented daunting operational challenges to the program and its volunteers. During the study period, rural Alaska underwent dramatic social and political changes as recent statehood and looming resource development necessitated resolution of Native land claims. A series of new federal anti-poverty initiatives and the transfer of existing agencies to state and local oversight presented opportunities …

Global Advances in Business Communication
Verna Myers (2016) advocated that “Diversity is being invited to the party, but inclusion is being asked to dance.” Cultural competence demands a strategic understanding of the importance of harnessing the power of diversity and inclusion in every action in organizations, communities, and nations throughout the world. Today’s work world cannot undervalue the importance of having diverse and inclusive representation in all areas of the organization, especially including international communication. By creating an environment that continually asks questions, values and embraces diversity - then collaborates and reconciles potential solutions to create positive outcomes - creates an inclusive environment in which …

Patent foramen ovale (PFO) is a congenital cardiac variant caused by failure of the closure of a passage in the atrial septum. It is quite common, occurring in as much as 27% of the population based on autopsy studies. Most cases of PFOs are incidentally discovered or found during work-up of cryptogenic strokes as a potential cause of the stroke.1 New research is being conducted on the role PFOs play in hypoxia from intracardiac right-to-left shunting, including in patients with co-existent cardiovascular and pulmonary disease
