Creating And Sustaining Positive School Climate During Covid-19 Pandemic, Corinne Brion, Bilgen Kiral

Educational Leadership Faculty Publications

The researchers used a qualitative design with a descriptive phenomenological approach to examine the experiences of 10 principals in creating and sustaining a positive school climate during COVID-19. The researchers conducted interviews over Zoom from October to December in 2021. The principals have worked in two American states, one Midwestern state and one in the South region of the country. Findings indicated that although the principals knew about school climate, they did not have a complete understanding of the concept. In the present study, it was concluded that a positive school climate is created and sustained with specific leadership skills …

Considerations For Partnering With Ryan White Case Managers To Create Equitable Opportunities For People With Hiv To Participate In Research, Elizabeth Lockhart, Deanne Turner, Jerome T. Galea, Stephanie L. Marhefka Oct 2022

Considerations For Partnering With Ryan White Case Managers To Create Equitable Opportunities For People With Hiv To Participate In Research, Elizabeth Lockhart, Deanne Turner, Jerome T. Galea, Stephanie L. Marhefka

Center for Health Policy and Health Services Research Articles

Many research studies focus on recruitment from one or few HIV clinics or internet-engaged populations, but this may result in inequitable representation of people with HIV (PWH), across the rural/urban/suburban continuum. Ryan White Case Managers (RWCM) meet regularly with PWH, potentially positioning them as partners in gathering research-related data from diverse groups of low-income, marginalized, PWH. Yet, data collection in partnership with RWCM, particularly over large geographic areas, has been under-explored. We partnered with RWCM and their organizations throughout Florida to administer a 10-item technology use and willingness survey to clients living with HIV; RWCMs provided process-oriented feedback. Among 382 …

Covid, Climate Change, And Transformative Social Justice: A Critical Legal Research Exploration, Nicholas F. Stump Oct 2022

Covid, Climate Change, And Transformative Social Justice: A Critical Legal Research Exploration, Nicholas F. Stump

William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review

This Article explores intertwined contemporary crises via the Critical Legal Research framework (“CLR”), as initially developed by the critical legal scholars Richard Delgado and Jean Stefancic. CLR as conceived of in this Article entails a truly radical approach to the legal research and analysis regime. While the traditional research regime—as taught in law schools and utilized in practice—functions to homogenize research outcomes towards hegemonic ends, a critically “reconstructed” approach to legal and broader socio-legal research permits more transformative futures. Specifically, CLR as deployed within such modes as radical cause lawyering can help engender genuine systemic “re-formations” of the ecological political …

The Impact Of Crisis Intervention Team Training On Correctional Officer Burnout In A Southeastern State Prison, Jennifer L. Boyd Oct 2022

The Impact Of Crisis Intervention Team Training On Correctional Officer Burnout In A Southeastern State Prison, Jennifer L. Boyd

Doctor of Education (Ed.D)

This dissertation sought to ascertain whether or not Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training could lower burnout in correctional officers (CO) in a Southeastern state prison system. Using an experimental learning theory in a quantitative, quasi-experimental approach, the researcher administered the pre-test and post-test assessments using Maslach Burnout Inventory to CO before CIT and 4-weeks after they completed CIT. The researcher concluded that CIT lowered burnout on CO in all areas of the MBI but was statistically significantly lower for emotional exhaustion and depersonalization.

Measuring And Assessing The Impact Of Race And Culture Assessments In Sentencing, Alexia Bystrzycki Oct 2022

Measuring And Assessing The Impact Of Race And Culture Assessments In Sentencing, Alexia Bystrzycki

LLM Theses

In recent years, the use of Impact of Race and Culture Assessments (“IRCA”) emerged in sentencing across Canada, especially in Nova Scotia and Ontario. Sentencing judges recognized that IRCAs “have the potential to provide a bridge between an accused’s experience with racial discrimination and the problem of over-incarceration” (R v Jackson, 2018 ONSC 2527). Consequently, IRCAs are helpful in achieving fit and proportional sentences. Using a mixed-methods approach, this thesis seeks to assess the impact of IRCAs on sentencing decisions. First, this thesis examines how judges apply IRCAs in crafting sentences by way of content analysis. Second, this thesis attempts …

Mediating Effects Of Positive Thinking On Compassion Fatigue, Compassion Satisfaction, And Resilience In Nurse Leaders, Jay Randall Gottschalk Oct 2022

Mediating Effects Of Positive Thinking On Compassion Fatigue, Compassion Satisfaction, And Resilience In Nurse Leaders, Jay Randall Gottschalk

Dissertations (1934 -)

Nurses in leadership positions are encountering increasing psychological stressors both due to the nature of their work and the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic on health care. Using the lens of the Metatheory of Resilience and Resiliency, some of these stressors (burnout and secondary traumatic stress) and protective factors (compassion satisfaction and resilience) were explored. This exploration involved the use of a Bayesian structural equation model that was evaluated to determine the nature of the relationships between these stressors and protective factors in nurse leaders. In addition, the mediating effects of positive thinking on these relationships was also evaluated. Reaching …

A Simulation Training To Prepare Camp Counselors For Working With Children At Camp Hope America, Angela Pharris, Julie Miller-Cribbs, Jedediah Bragg, Bonni Goodwin

Journal of Youth Development

Camp has proven to be an effective positive youth development strategy for children and youth who experience trauma and adversity. However, training camp counselors who are prepared to meet the needs of trauma-exposed youth in these settings are less understood. This pilot evaluation study provides the results of a social simulation-based training for counselors who will work with children who have witnessed family violence through Camp HOPE America. Survey data (N = 76) and content analysis from video recorded training sessions in simulation that used standardized actors and scenarios from the 1st year (n = 37) were conducted. Repeated measures …

An Exploration Of Volunteering As A Path To Healthy Youth Development, Rehan Devanjith Meemaduma, Kartini Booso Oct 2022

An Exploration Of Volunteering As A Path To Healthy Youth Development, Rehan Devanjith Meemaduma, Kartini Booso

Journal of Youth Development

Volunteering is commonly observed from the standpoint of the service recipient, and the effect it has on a volunteer’s growth and development is often overlooked. Though quantitative studies, mixed method research, and surveys have explored the impact of volunteerism, very few look into its connection with healthy youth development. Furthermore, it has not received the academic attention it deserves in Sri Lanka, given that the country is globally ranked 1st in volunteer engagement. This qualitative study sought a psychosocial approach to explore and gain insight into the effects of volunteerism on the personal and social development of volunteers. Data collection …

Market Feminism In Morocco, Claire Madsen Oct 2022

Market Feminism In Morocco, Claire Madsen

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Despite widespread views of “Moroccan Exceptionalism,” Morocco continues to rank poorly on international evaluations of gender equality. This project seeks to understand the extent of the influence neoliberal economic forces in Morocco have had on the feminist landscape. Analysis of Moroccan political history, Foucauldian theories of power relations, and relevant literature on state feminism set the groundwork for the evaluation of the extent state feminism in Morocco can be understood as market-based, in accordance with the definition from From State Feminism to Market Feminsim (2012) by Kantola and Squires. Through interviews of three experts, three meetings with women’s empowerment NGOs, …

The Rinpoche Sent Me A Friend Request: The Roles And Perceptions Of Social Media In Buddhist Religious Life, Solveigh Barney

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

When I first heard about His Eminence the 8th Chokyong Palga Rinpoche, I didn’t expect to find an Instagram page consisting of gym pics and sunglass selfies. As I kept scrolling through Instagram, I soon found out that Palga Rinpoche is not alone in this influencer-like social media façade; he is a part of a younger generation of Buddhist monastics who are trying to be what some call monkfluencers. These monastics are growing up in the digital world of social media, making it more accessible to share with the outside world the #monklife. My goal is to investigate the relationship …

Faux-Flipping A Supportive Housing Training: Lessons From Pandemic Adaptations, Shelley K. Buchbinder, Emilie R. Banz Oct 2022

Faux-Flipping A Supportive Housing Training: Lessons From Pandemic Adaptations, Shelley K. Buchbinder, Emilie R. Banz

Journal of Human Services: Training, Research, and Practice

Following March 2020 coronavirus closures, the Community Support Services training initiative for supportive housing providers transitioned to fully remote learning. Training remotely, the trainers developed a faux-flipped model of midtraining interactive video lectures alongside videoconferencing with time for active learning through interactions and activities. There were benefits to training remotely using a faux-flipped model, including increased participation, training retention, and self-evaluated knowledge. After improved training results, the faux-flipped recorded video lectures will remain in future training. The coauthors suggest additional research to elaborate the faux-flipped model and assess its impact on learning and engagement.
