The Association Between Food Insecurity And Physical Activity In Adults With Serious Mental Illness Living In Supportive Housing, Amy Taylor Cunningham, Lara Carson Weinstein, Ana Stefancic, Alexis Silverio, Leopoldo J. Cabassa
Department of Family & Community Medicine Faculty Papers
Rates of food insecurity are high among adults with serious mental illness (SMI); this population also engages in less physical activity than the general population. However, the relationship between food insecurity and physical activity in this group has not been explored. We examined food insecurity prevalence and its association with physical activity in 314 adults with SMI living in supportive housing in New York City and Philadelphia and enrolled in an institutional review board-approved randomized controlled trial of a Peer Group Lifestyle Balance (PGLB) program. We analyzed 2014 baseline survey data, including demographic data and self-reported food security, and four …

Social Worker Decision-Making In Court, Dale Abbotts, Alyson Norman
School of Psychology
The current study aimed to explore the factors that influence how social workers make decisions and develop their decision-making skills in care proceedings, and to identify effective support and intervention to develop social worker decision-making skills. The study employed a mixed thematic approach across two phases of study: an initial inductive thematic analysis of responses to an online qualitative questionnaire and then a mixed thematic analysis of follow-up focus groups and interviews with social workers working in various social work roles within England and Northern Ireland. The findings identified a number of themes that help to understand the decision-making skills …

International Journal of Physical Activity and Health
Past research has identified that individuals from BAME communities face health inequalities and report poorer outcomes from numerous health interventions. This study will explore some of the reasons with a focus on the perceptions towards physical activity in the lifestyle prevention of diseases. It will also seek to elicit a range of facilitators and barriers towards improving physical activity lifestyle choices amongst UK BAME adults, including but not limited to those in the individual, structural, environmental and social domains. Furthermore, it will consider the role of ethnicity and culture in the forming of physical activity lifestyle choices. This study was …

Self-Care With Self-Compassion (Sc2): A Program To Foster Well-Being In Graduate Speech-Language Pathology Students, Laura R. Chapman, Karalee Cole
Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders
This article describes elements of Self-Care with Self-Compassion (SC2), a novel program designed to foster well-being in graduate speech-language-pathology (SLP) students. Graduate SLP students experience elevated levels of perceived stress, which can ultimately impact their professional competence. University programs, faculty, and staff are uniquely positioned to help students learn to cope with stress. Self-care and self-compassion may buffer some of the effects of stress, and at the same time foster qualities in students that facilitate learning and promote healthy clinical practice. Twenty-five incoming SLP graduate students participated in SC2, a required, two-part workshop. Levels of perceived …

“The Hierarchy Is Your Constraint:” A Qualitative Investigation Of Social Workers’ Moral Distress Across A U.S. Health System, Sophia Fantus, Rebecca Cole, Lataya Hawkins
School of Social Work Faculty Publications
This paper reports findings from a qualitative study on the triggers of hospital social workers’ moral distress at a large southern U.S. health system. Moral distress occurs when ethical conflict cannot be resolved in a way that aligns with an individual’s personal and professional values and ethics. Participants indicated that moral distress derives from both individual interactions and the culture and climate of health systems. For example, participants expressed how sources of moral distress derived from client-centered decisions, such as end-of-life care and patient autonomy; interpersonal dynamics, including team or supervisory conflict; structural issues, such as insurance barriers or internal …
Examining Associations Between Servant Leadership, Job Burnout, And Job Satisfaction In The Iowa Probation And Parole Job Profession, Alfredo Rodriguez Ordaz
Examining Associations Between Servant Leadership, Job Burnout, And Job Satisfaction In The Iowa Probation And Parole Job Profession, Alfredo Rodriguez Ordaz
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The following research paper investigated the associations between servant leadership, job burnout, and job satisfaction in the Iowa probation and parole profession. There is extensive literature examining job burnout and job satisfaction in many disciplines, including the field of corrections. Leadership literature examining the servant leadership model remains limited. The leadership literature suggests that probation and parole agencies operate through a traditional paramilitary command and control hierarchy of strict adherence to rules, policies, and procedures. The importance and significance of this study are that it examined the extent to which probation and parole leaders practiced and engaged in servant leadership …

Trauma-Informed Supervision Experiences: A Preliminary Phenomenological Study, Gina Martin, Gideon Litherland, David K. Duys
The Qualitative Report
Trauma is pervasive in the clinical world of counseling. The current literature indicates adverse effects for survivors of a traumatic event and the counselors listening to the details of traumatic events, but there is a gap in research on the adverse effects trauma in counseling has on supervisors. This study aims to understand the lived experiences of supervisors who have dealt with traumatic experiences in clinical work through interviews with current supervisors of those who work with trauma. The results indicate trauma-informed supervision consists of trauma taking many forms, supervisors (and counselors) using the self in their work, supervisors knowing …

Improvement Of Meaningful Referrals Following Nursing Assessment Of Oncology Patient Distress, Genesis Sullivan
M. S. in Nursing Health Care Leadership
The purpose of this project was to transition a current paper-based assessment into the electronic medical record chart and develop automated referrals to trigger off the responses. I selected this project because delays in searching for the scanned paper assessment and manual referral entry could negatively impact the patient’s treatment journey. Methods used included bringing a multidisciplinary team together and reviewing multiple nursing and medical journeys for best practices on electronic assessments. Collaboration with the formed team including the Information Technology department was necessary and the development of new nursing workflows. Education to nursing colleagues was required before implementation. The …

Chapter 07. Message Design For Healthcare Simulation, Maria Satre
Chapter 07. Message Design For Healthcare Simulation, Maria Satre
Instructional Message Design, Volume 2
Simulation is a teaching method that motivates and engages learners (Ifenthaler et al. 2020; Martin & Betrus, 2019), can provide better student performance outcomes compared to traditional classroom education (Chernikova et al. 2020; D’Angleo et al., 2014; Di Natale et al., 2020; Gralnick & Levy, 2011; Pellas et al., 2019), and can even replace some real-world learning experiences (Alexander et al., 2015). Instructional designers who develop healthcare simulations should use relevant learning theory and instructional message design to ensure that the simulation is learner-centered and based in evidence-based practice to maximize the potential for the learning experience.

Implementing A Novel Self-Care Clock Strategy As Part Of A Trauma Awareness Intervention In A University Setting, Julie E. Bertram, Umit Tokac, Allison Brauch, Anne F. Fish
Nursing Faculty Works
Purpose: This study compared post- and preintervention trauma-informed care attitudes, explored relationships among outcomes, and identified self-care behavior changes participants are willing to make. Design and Methods: A quasi-experimental study with content analysis was conducted with 96 adults that took part in a Trauma Awareness Intervention including a novel self-care clock. Conclusions: Participants' trauma-informed care attitudes improved (p ≤ 0.05) compared to baseline and were positively related to their post-intervention compassion scores (p < 0.05). Qualitative analyses revealed self-awareness, self-care, empathy, applying a trauma lens, changing the narrative, and student-centeredness as the main themes in participants' responses. Practical Implications: This university-based initiative had a positive impact on attitudes toward trauma and should be explored in other settings, as there is an unmet need for trauma-informed care strategies at the community level.

Objective: Assessing the diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) climate of emergency departments (EDs) can inform organizational change to provide equitable, inclusive, and high-quality care to their diverse patient populations. The purpose of this project was to investigate patient perspectives on the climate of DEI in an urban ED.
Methods: This was a cross-sectional survey study conducted in a large-volume, urban ED in Detroit, MI, from November 2018 to January 2019. The survey was developed by an experienced ED DEI committee via an iterative process and broad consensus.
Results: During their care in the ED, 849 patients completed an anonymous survey …
Building The Bridge To Healing And Learning Website Leading To Creating A Therapeutic School Experience For Students With Adverse Childhood Experiences, Developmental Trauma, And Mental Illness, Linda Miller
IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects
TeachTheraBridge is the domain name for the website I created called Bridge to Healing and Learning. The purpose of the website is to share my big idea about creating a therapeutic school experience for children and youth with adverse childhood experiences, developmental trauma, and mental illness”.
I have asked the question, “What would happen if we combined school and therapy using a Reggio Emilia approach in specialized local classrooms and/or in a comprehensive day treatment center?” The website explores this question and goes into depth about the Reggio approach and about therapies to integrate into the school day. The website …

Reflections On Pedagogical Practice And Development Through Multidisciplinary Triadic Peer Mentorship, Nicole Charles, Nathalie Moon, Andrew P. Dicks
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
This article presents a critical reflection on the experiences of three university instructors (two teaching stream and one tenure stream) within a 6-month peer-to-peer mentoring for teaching community of practice (P2P CoP). As part of the P2P CoP, the authors (who were previously unknown to one another) formed a “teaching triad” at a tri-campus, research-intensive Canadian university. They regularly met in person for 1 hour on a weekly basis throughout the Winter 2019 semester to discuss teaching-related matters, undertook classroom visits to observe one another teach, and participated in pedagogical workshops with other P2P CoP members. In this article, the …
Societal Perceptions Surrounding Child Maltreatment And Mental Health, Olivia K. Smith
Societal Perceptions Surrounding Child Maltreatment And Mental Health, Olivia K. Smith
Selected Honors Theses
Child maltreatment, mental illness, and criminal behavior are all commonly known topics and a wide variety of research has been conducted to investigate the implications of all three concepts. Even though there is quality research on each of these topics, the awareness of important facts and theories in these areas may not be known to the general public. This study surveyed university students on their knowledge of the characteristics and risk factors of victims of child maltreatment, in addition to their perceptions of people with mental illness. Items included in the study were comprised of items from Taylor and Dear’s …
