Black On Ice, Precious R. Jackson Jan 2023

Black On Ice, Precious R. Jackson

Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects

The purpose of this project was to gain perspective into the lived experiences of Black female athletes on the axis of marginalized intersecting identities. Based on the framework of Black Feminist Thought, this project explores how Black women face issues of race while simultaneously battling obstacles related to their gender. Research shows that being situated in this unique position makes it difficult for Black female athletes to focus on playing sports compared to their counterparts. Previous literature indicates that Black female athletes who attend predominantly White institutions (PWIs) have different experiences than Black female athletes who attend historically Black colleges …

Applying An Anti-Racist Pedagogy To Develop And Deliver A Racial Microaggressions Workshop For Occupational Therapy Students, Shannon Giannitsopoulou, Jane A. Davis, Bismah Khalid, Ruheena Sangrar Jan 2023

Applying An Anti-Racist Pedagogy To Develop And Deliver A Racial Microaggressions Workshop For Occupational Therapy Students, Shannon Giannitsopoulou, Jane A. Davis, Bismah Khalid, Ruheena Sangrar

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

Many workshops about identifying, understanding, and responding to microaggressions have been designed and delivered to learners within health education. However, few workshops implement an anti-racist pedagogical approach, and none presented in the literature have been created specifically for occupational therapy students. Anti-racist pedagogical approaches explicitly link interpersonal and institutional/structural oppressions to ensure that the impacts of microaggressions are not minimized by focusing solely on interpersonal interactions. A specific workshop is needed to address the noted persistence of racial microaggressions directed at clients, families, students, and practitioners within occupational therapy contexts and due to the embeddedness of practitioners in clients’ daily …

An Intentional Wholeness Focus And The Association With Burnout In Graduate Students, Stacey B. Cunningham, Susanne B. Montgomery, Brian J. Distelberg, Qais Alemi

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

Rates of stress, anxiety, depression, and burnout for university students are concerning. As in other competitive professional fields, graduate students in occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech language pathology face many performance pressures. Creating supportive learning and wholeness climates along with individual grit, resilience, and healthy spirituality have the potential to positively impact these pressures. The study’s purpose was to examine factors related to burnout within an institution committed to creating supportive learning and wholeness environments. Three hundred and fifty-three graduate students from occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech language pathology graduate programs were recruited to participate in a cross-sectional …

Experiential Learning Through Als Caregiver Learning Labs: Occupational Therapy Student Outcomes, Susan Hoey, Jessica Henaughan

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

Occupational therapy (OT) educators strive to design learning experiences to enhance OT students’ clinical reasoning and promote preparedness for the complexities of clinical practice. Occupational therapy programs have collaborated with the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Association and taken a novel approach to the development of interprofessional experiential learning through student-led ALS Caregiver Learning Labs (CLLs). A retrospective pre-test post-test study was completed to identify outcomes related to participation in three different ALS CLLs embedded into a master’s level OT curriculum. A 6-point rating scale questionnaire was used to assess students’ perception of their clinical reasoning, clinical skills, and comfort level. …

Concept Mapping As An Instructional Method To Support Critical Thinking In Occupational Therapy Students: A Pilot Study, Alissa R. Baker, Cassandra C. Ginn

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

In occupational therapy practice, critical thinking is a foundational skill for the delivery of effective care; however, there is limited evidence on the development of critical thinking skills in occupational therapy education. The purpose of this study was to explore the effects and student perceptions of concept mapping on critical thinking skills in occupational therapy education. This study used a quasi-experimental design with a retrospective pre-post assessment after two teaching conditions: (a) traditional lecture and (b) concept mapping. The same convenience sample of students was used for each condition. Additional outcome measures included assessment of student concept maps using a …

Feeling Connected: Examining The Importance Of Human Connection On The Personal Outlook Of Social Service Providers Working With The Homeless During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Darci M. Graves, Ines W. Jindra, Nicholas Evans

Journal of Human Services: Training, Research, and Practice

Abstract

This research study explores the lived experiences of social workers and social service providers (collectively referred to as ‘providers’) working with the homeless and homeless-adjacent populations in the early phases of the COVID-19 pandemic. We examine how the pandemic changed the work providers do, and how providers coped with and adapted to these changes. This research utilizes traditional qualitative interviews with a total of twenty providers located in the North-Western United States (NW-US). Key findings from this research indicate providers' outcomes were influenced by the extent of their social connections to community, clients, and coworkers throughout the pandemic. This …

Understanding The Impact Of Illinois’ Evidence-Based Funding Law: An Examination Of Spending For The First Three Years, Christopher T. Johnson Jan 2023

Understanding The Impact Of Illinois’ Evidence-Based Funding Law: An Examination Of Spending For The First Three Years, Christopher T. Johnson

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation comprises an examination of how school districts have allocated the resources they received as a result of the Illinois Evidenced-Based Funding (EBF) for Student Success law. The law was passed in 2017 with the rationale of providing additional resources to school districts based on evidenced-based approaches, with the vast majority of the funds to be allocated to districts in financial need. A brief history of school funding is extrapolated from the literature. An overview of the law and the resources that it brought to districts is then provided, followed by an analysis of how those resources were spent. …

The Altavoces Project: A Digital Narrative Approach To Anti-Oppressive Social Work Research With Latino Youth, Jenn M. Lilly

Social Service Faculty Publications

Although digital narrative methods lend themselves well to participatory, action-oriented inquiry, these relatively new methods also raise questions about potential risks involved in using digital technologies to engage marginalized groups in social work research. This article examines the feasibility, challenges, and opportunities of using digital narrative methods in anti-oppressive social work research (AOSWR) by providing empirical insights from the AltaVoces project—an AOSWR project that used digital narrative methods to engage Latino youth. This case study demonstrates the compatibility and feasibility of digital narrative methods in AOSWR by examining to what extent the AltaVoces project: (1) used methods that center the …

Lilly, Jessica L. Liddell, Hannah Knipp, Tamela Autumn Solomon, Nikki Comby, Harold Comby, Patricia Haynes, Kathleen Ferris, Maple Goldberg

Social Service Faculty Publications

Family prevention programs that enhance mental health, wellness, and resilience—while simultaneously addressing violence and alcohol and other drug (AOD) abuse—among Indigenous families are scarce. This gap in culturally grounded and community-based programs creates a critical need to develop and evaluate the efficacy of such prevention programs. This article fills this gap, with the purpose of describing the structure and content of the Weaving Healthy Families (WHF) program, a culturally grounded and community-based program aimed at preventing violence and AOD use while promoting mental health, resilience, and wellness in Indigenous families. The focus then turns to how to approach this process …

“Putting My Life Into A Story”: A Preliminary Evaluation Of A Digital Narrative Intervention Combining Participatory Video And Narrative Therapy, Jenn M. Lilly

Social Service Faculty Publications

This article describes the development, implementation, and evaluation of a digital narrative intervention that combined participatory video (PV) and narrative therapy practices to engage Latinx immigrant young people in processes of personal and societal change. Drawing on ethnographic field notes, process recordings, audio recordings of intervention implementation, and focus group data, this program evaluation offers empirical evidence of the impacts of this innovative, digital narrative intervention on Latinx immigrant young people (ages 18-24) in New Orleans. A constructivist grounded theory approach to data analysis resulted in three main themes: critical self-awareness, Latinx and immigrant pride, and media literacy. This study …

“Born Again:” Narrating The Mental Health Journeys Of Religious Exiters, Fio Haire Jan 2023

“Born Again:” Narrating The Mental Health Journeys Of Religious Exiters, Fio Haire

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Religious exit–also known as disaffiliation, deconversion, or apostasy–is a growing phenomenon in the United States with significant individual and social consequences. In this review, I consult existing literature to clarify the relationship between the process of religious exit and the mental health of exiters I organize this literature using Ebaugh’s (1988) role-exit model to frame exiting religion as a multi-stage process of role-identity disruption, exit, anomie, and reestablishment. I situate each stage as characterized by changes in mental health, in alignment with psychological theories of the impact of self-construction and self-concept on mental health symptoms. The literature suggests that, beginning …

Purpose: The aim of this qualitative instrumental case study was to obtain a better understanding of how informal caregivers of persons with ADRD experience stress and which supports helped mitigate the effect of these stressors in their role as a caregiver.

Theoretical Framework: The Model of Human Occupation focuses on therapy helping persons to engage in occupational behaviors that maintain, restore, reorganize, …

The Impact Of Brief Mindfulness Training On Occupational Therapy (Ot) Students' Perceived Level Of Stress, Emily K. Masters Jan 2023

The Impact Of Brief Mindfulness Training On Occupational Therapy (Ot) Students' Perceived Level Of Stress, Emily K. Masters

Occupational Therapy Doctorate Capstone Projects

Background: Mental health issues and burnout are becoming more common among students in healthcare programs (Dyrbye et al., 2014). As demands placed on healthcare professions continue to increase, there has been an increased interest in researching the practice of mindfulness to promote self-care (Irving et al., 2009). Mindfulness has been defined as “the awareness that emerges through paying attention on purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally to the unfolding of experience moment by moment” (Kabat-Zinn, 2003, p. 145). Mindfulness has been shown to decrease stress and anxiety among pre-healthcare college students (Burgstahler & Stenson, 2020). Little research has investigated …

Exploring The Impact Of Covid-19 On Adults With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities In The United States, Sarah Lineberry Jan 2023

Exploring The Impact Of Covid-19 On Adults With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities In The United States, Sarah Lineberry

Theses and Dissertations

Like most disasters, the COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately impacted people from historically marginalized communities. People with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) have faced higher rates of infection, hospitalization, and death compared to people without disabilities, as well as significant disruptions to the services that support them to participate in the community. A relative lack of research about the experiences of people with IDD may have contributed to this risk and continues to limit our understanding of the impacts of COVID-19. This three-paper dissertation is guided by the theory of epistemic injustice (Fricker, 2007) to understand the impacts of COVID-19 on …

Implementation Of A Suicide Prevention Program In A Rural School, Mackenzie Wieser

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Practice Innovation Projects

Introduction: Suicide is a leading cause of death among today's youth. One in six youth have seriously considered attempting suicide, and one in 13 have attempted suicide at least once. Timely identification of those at risk and connection with appropriate help are critical. Elementary, middle, and high school teachers are ideally positioned to act as gatekeepers through early recognition of students in psychological distress and timely response and referral when appropriate.
Evidence Summary: Teachers report a sense of responsibility for providing indirect mental health services to youth but have a lack of sufficient training and preparedness. Kognito online simulations have …

Towards A New Definition Of Trust For Teaching In Higher Education, Ziqian Zhou Dr Jan 2023

Towards A New Definition Of Trust For Teaching In Higher Education, Ziqian Zhou Dr

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Questions about trust between tutors in tertiary education and their students have not received much treatment in comparison to those of institutional trustworthiness or trust in the public education system. This reflective paper reviews and critically evaluates existing literature from the fields of SoTL, education and other relevant research domains in order to understand the nature of trust in higher education teaching; for, an understanding of the nature of trust allows tertiary educators and administrators to foster such trust, which has been shown to be a crucial ingredient for teaching effectiveness. The second half of this paper raises a set …
