Mentorship Program Components That Influence Beginning Teacher Retention, Rebecca Carlson Jan 2023

Mentorship Program Components That Influence Beginning Teacher Retention, Rebecca Carlson

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates the relationship between new teachers' retention in the first five years of teaching and mentorship support given to teachers. The teacher shortage in the United States is a documented problem and continues to grow. The inability of the education system to attract and retain quality teachers is a significant problem in the current teacher shortage. As schools deal with unfilled teaching positions, teachers are overworked trying to fill these positions, and students receive lower quality education from teachers who have not received sufficient preparation. This study analyzed the effects that mentoring, including time spent with mentor and …

Life Skills Intervention For Formerly Incarcerated Individuals At Maricopa Reentry Center, Dalenna Bellum Jan 2023

Life Skills Intervention For Formerly Incarcerated Individuals At Maricopa Reentry Center, Dalenna Bellum

OT Student Capstones

The rates of incarceration quickly rose in the United States in the late 1900’s in response to change in legislation in favor of more tough on crime movements and policy. In addition to these movements and other social, environmental, and demographic factors, certain groups of individuals faced increased risk for incarceration and increased challenges before, during, and after incarceration. The purpose of this doctoral capstone experience and report is to explore challenges during community reentry after incarceration that can lead to re-arrest, or recidivism. This is a crucial time because without the appropriate tools, resources, and supports, the individual is …

The Idea Of Unconscionability In Equitable Adjudication And Its Variegated Manifestations In The Louisiana Territory, Pre-1900, Edad Mercier

Theses and Dissertations

The history of American law in the nineteenth century reveals how antislavery activism, Westward expansionism, labor, and women’s rights activism tested the boundaries, strength, and authority of the federal government over states and individuals. At the turn of the nineteenth century, as people resisted against their social position during one of the most turbulent periods in American history prior to the Civil War, American law simultaneously evolved to recognize and delineate the private and public rights of individuals and communities. My dissertation explains how informal and formal socio-legal customs were used to resolve major ethical, social, and contractual disputes arising …

Improving the process through which mental health professionals are trained in evidence-based practices (EBPs) represents an important opportunity for extending the implementation of EBPs in community settings. In this study, we used a qualitative approach to examine the specific training elements that were beneficial to clinicians’ experiences learning an evidence-based intervention. Individual, semi-structured interviews were conducted with mental health professionals completing training in the GenerationPMTO parenting intervention. Data were analyzed using the tenets of thematic analysis. Overall, participants reported positive experiences in the training and growth in their attitudes, knowledge, and confidence in GenerationPMTO. The qualitative findings also suggested seven …

Understanding Student Experiences Of Renewable And Traditional Assignments, Virginia Clinton-Lisell, Lindsey Gwozdz

Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications

Renewable assignments are student created artifacts that have value outside of courses. However, more empirical inquiry in renewable assignments grounded in theoretical frameworks is necessary. In this study, students (N = 69) engaged in renewable assignments and were asked to report on their perceptions based on the self-determination theory of motivation and social justice principles. Overall, students reported higher levels of motivation as well as more opportunity to represent their identities for renewable assignments than traditional assignments. Students who opted to publicly share reported higher levels of competence and relatedness than did students who did not opt to publicly share.

Stepping In The Right Direction? Exploring Mental Health Providers’ Beliefs About, Training In, And Use Of Stepped-Care Practices, Caroline Lucy Jan 2023

Stepping In The Right Direction? Exploring Mental Health Providers’ Beliefs About, Training In, And Use Of Stepped-Care Practices, Caroline Lucy

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Interventions that can be efficiently and effectively delivered to a larger number of people are needed to address the large, unmet need for mental health services. Stepped-care models have the potential to address this need and provide benefit to a significant number of patients while managing provider burden. The present study sought to clarify providers’ current use of, beliefs about, and training in stepped care practices, as well as barriers to its use. Providers generally agreed with the model and believed in the effectiveness of lower intensity methods. While the majority endorsed engaging in multiple stepped practices, few reported explicitly …

Scope Of Open Education: A New Framework For Research, Virginia Elizabeth Clinton-Lisell, Jasmine Roberts-Crews, Lindsey Gwozdz

Library Faculty Publications

The field of open education and research on the topic has notably expanded since the introduction of the term 20 years ago. Given these developments, a framework to structure research inquiry is necessary to ground and organize findings in open education. We propose the SCOPE framework for open education research: social justice, cost, outcomes, perceptions, and engagement. In this article, we explain how this framework emphasizes the need for social justice at the forefront of open education research. In addition, we incorporate existing theories in social justice, motivation, cognition, pedagogy, and engagement into each of the components to propose theoretical …

Ineffective Aggregation Of Filipino-American Health Assessment Data & It's Effect On Individualized Healthcare, Marrian Gutierrez, Anthony Rain Macoy Jan 2023

Ineffective Aggregation Of Filipino-American Health Assessment Data & It's Effect On Individualized Healthcare, Marrian Gutierrez, Anthony Rain Macoy

Nursing | Senior Theses

Background

Filipino-Americans and their health care data seem to be difficult to find individually, and this is due to the continual grouping of this population with other Asian subgroups into the Asian-American population. The needs of the Filipino-American population are distinctly different from other Asian-American subgroups, and the underrepresentation leads to inadequate health care, lack of education within the community, and in some cases, disproportional deaths of Filipino-Americans.

Objective

To highlight the importance of adequate aggregation of health assessment data of a specific population on individualized care, in this paper, Filipino-Americans.

Summary of Findings

In the review of literature, it …
