Epidemiology And Criminology: Managing Youth Firearm Homicide Violence In Urban Areas, Joseph A. Mcmillan Mar 2023

Epidemiology And Criminology: Managing Youth Firearm Homicide Violence In Urban Areas, Joseph A. Mcmillan

Journal of Sustainable Social Impact

Violence is considered a public health problem in the United States, yet little is known about the benefit of using a combined epidemiology and criminology (EpiCrim) approach to focus on urban youth gun violence. The purpose of this general qualitative study was to determine in what ways Akers and Lanier’s EpiCrim approach, in tandem with Benet’s polarities of democracy approach, is explanatory of gun homicides by youth in U.S. urban areas and if the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System adequately addresses gun abatement measures. I collected data through semi-structured interviews with 16 criminal justice practitioners and medical professionals with experience …

Connecting Higher Education To Workplace Activities And Earnings, Hung Chau, Sarah H. Bana, Baptiste Bouvier, Morgan R. Frank

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

Higher education is a source of skill acquisition for many middle- and high-skilled jobs. But what specific skills do universities impart on students to prepare them for desirable careers? In this study, we analyze a large novel corpora of over one million syllabi from over eight hundred bachelors’ granting US educational institutions to connect material taught in higher education to the detailed work activities in the US economy as reported by the US Department of Labor. First, we show how differences in taught skills both within and between college majors correspond to earnings differences of recent graduates. Further, we use …

Treating Criminal Justice-Involved Serious Mental Illness (Smi) Clients In The Community, Brittany Hood Mar 2023

Treating Criminal Justice-Involved Serious Mental Illness (Smi) Clients In The Community, Brittany Hood

Qualitative Criminology (QC)

With criminal justice-involved individuals with serious mental illness (SMI) at an all-time high in the criminal justice system, research on community mental health centers (CMHCs) demonstrates a lack of treatment for justice-involved persons. Scholars have argued that providing appropriate treatment to criminal justice-involved individuals with SMI could alleviate symptoms. Therefore improving the effectiveness of mental health treatment to reduce recidivism in this population is paramount. The current study used a qualitative approach to examine how community service providers perceived organizational-level variables and legal constraints to influence treatment decisions for justice-involved individuals with SMI. Findings suggest three critical implications for policy …

A Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion Audit Of The American Families Of Faith Project: Exploring Lifespan Spiritual Development In Religiously And Racially Diverse Families, David C. Dollahite, Justin J. Hendricks, Loren D. Marks Mar 2023

A Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion Audit Of The American Families Of Faith Project: Exploring Lifespan Spiritual Development In Religiously And Racially Diverse Families, David C. Dollahite, Justin J. Hendricks, Loren D. Marks

Faculty Publications

Social science and religious studies scholars should endeavor to broaden theories, methods, and samples to be more inclusive. Therefore, we have conducted an “equity audit” of the American Families of Faith (AFF) project. We evaluated the diversity, equity, and inclusion of the AFF project’s (a) research team, (b) products, and (c) samples. We then discuss the reasoning behind the decisions that resulted in the existing strengths and limitations of the project, the fruits of this and previous evaluations (including a presentation of some narrative accounts from parents and youths across several religious-ethnic communities across the US), opportunities for growth, and …

The Unconscious Never Lies, Judah Brass Mar 2023

The Unconscious Never Lies, Judah Brass

Student Research

My paper examines the novel "The Picture of Dorian Grey" by Oscar Wilde from a psychoanalysis lens, exploring the complexity of human emotions and the riveting effects of trauma, repression and human interaction. There is an emphasis on different ways expression of the unconscious or processes of emotions can be benefited through an appropriate mode of processing. This research purpose is to educate on applying a criticism to literature, advocate for mental health awareness, and emphasize the importance of processing emotions in a productive and safe way.

Dorian Grey’s past trauma (lack of father figure) seen through his progressive behavior …

Race/Ism In Field Education: Narratives Of Bipoc Field Instructors, Gita Mehrotra, Anita Gooding, Olivia K. Bormann Mar 2023

Race/Ism In Field Education: Narratives Of Bipoc Field Instructors, Gita Mehrotra, Anita Gooding, Olivia K. Bormann

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Field instructors are critical to enacting social work’s signature pedagogy as they are tasked with providing agency-based learning opportunities and supervision for students. It has been well-documented that field supervisors are instrumental in students’ learning and that the supervisory relationship is central to success in field education. However, there is a dearth of research regarding issues of identity, difference, race, and/or racism in these relationships, particularly from the perspective of field instructors of color. To date, we found no published literature that focuses specifically on the experiences and perspectives of Black, Indigenous, or People of Color (BIPOC) social work field …

Teaching Note: Bridging Contemplative Social Work Education And Emerging Technologies, Juan Rios Mar 2023

Teaching Note: Bridging Contemplative Social Work Education And Emerging Technologies, Juan Rios

Journal of Contemplative Inquiry

This paper will describe Dr. Anthony Nicotera’s theory of the Circle of Insight and apply it to emerging technology, such as virtual reality and explore why special attention must be paid in this context to integrating immersive contemplative practices with the experience of racialized Black and Brown people in the virtual space. Evidence shows that virtual reality as a tool can increase empathy through virtual body transference and could be an effective teaching tool (Cogburn, 2018). It is theorized herein that if the Circle of Insight is applied accordingly with and through virtual reality, participants may gain a better understanding …

Teaching About Race, Racism, And Social Justice With Mindfulness: A Pedagogical Tool That Keeps Us All Engaged, Marisela B. Gomez Mar 2023

Teaching About Race, Racism, And Social Justice With Mindfulness: A Pedagogical Tool That Keeps Us All Engaged, Marisela B. Gomez

Journal of Contemplative Inquiry

Teaching about race, racism, and social justice requires both instructor and student or participant to stay engaged. A public health pedagogy that includes mindfulness can help to ensure this engagement. This reflective piece will highlight the effects of mindfulness in general and specifically in helping to remain calm during education on potentially activating material. A description of the use of nature slides as bells of mindfulness to remind teacher and participants, especially Black, Indigenous, and People of Color/Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic, to pause and become aware of the breath, relax, and renew themselves will be discussed. This calm is …

Rising Up Rooted: Black Wisdom As Emancipatory Contemplative Practice For Resilience, Healing, And Liberation, Shelly P. Harrell Mar 2023

Rising Up Rooted: Black Wisdom As Emancipatory Contemplative Practice For Resilience, Healing, And Liberation, Shelly P. Harrell

Journal of Contemplative Inquiry

Black wisdom is offered as a transformative, liberatory, and healing resource with particular applications for disrupting the five dynamics of oppression—dehumanization, disconnection, destruction, delusion, and disempowerment. Cultural wisdom is a key element of emancipatory contemplative practice which intentionally centers strategies for decolonizing inner life. The integration of Black wisdom into contemplative practices can provide an ancestral and experiential connection to a sense of belonging and “home,” as well as establish an empowering foundation from which personal and collective liberation can flourish. Black wisdom can be incorporated into contemplative practice through cultural expressions (music, African proverbs and symbols), applications that utilize …

Ode To Woman On The Train And My Sistahs: Healing And Reimagining Loving Relationships With Black, Indigenous, And Women Of Color (Biwoc), Ericka Echavarria

Journal of Contemplative Inquiry

In March 2019, I was assaulted on a busy NYC train during an early morning commute by a Black woman who appeared to be mentally ill. The incident left an indelible impact on my heart, body, and soul, and created a somatic opening to experience oneness and healing with my attacker, a Black woman, as well as with other Black, Indigenous, and Women of Color who have harmed me, and who I have also harmed. This article will discuss how I used contemplative practices to unpack the complexity of emotions I experienced in the processing of the incident and other …

Heeding The Signs: Using Contemplative Practice For Sustainability As Black Racial Equity Facilitators, Ericka Echavarria, Ovita F. Williams

Journal of Contemplative Inquiry

As women of color working in partnership and individually as Black Racial Equity Facilitators (BREFs) of critical dialogues, we recognize the tremendous difficulty and demand in holding people’s uncertainty, anguish, revelations, and awakenings. We expect that white people will bring their tears, anger, denial of racism and collective whiteness. When the pain emanates from Black indigenous people of color (BIPOC), this can take an additional toll on the livelihood of BREFs. The collective emotions in these conversations are heavy and require preparation, centering and co-leadership that will provide space for healing and sustainability for BREFs. Building awareness of the particular …

Mindfulness And Indigenous Knowledge: Shared Narratives About Reconciliation And Decolonization In Teacher Education, Karen Ragoonaden, Tina Fraser, Ross Hoffman, Brenda Hebert

Journal of Contemplative Inquiry

This article discusses how shared narratives about mindfulness practices and Indigenous knowledge advance the reconciliation and the decolonization of Teacher Education curricula. We, the authors, experienced the beneficial impact of our personal mindfulness practices in nurturing and cultivating the harmonious balance of the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual dimensions of the self. Within the context of the Truth and Reconciliation’s Calls to Action (2015), we observed the connections between mindfulness practices and local and place-based teachings of First Nation and Métis First Peoples in Northern British Columbia and in the Interior of British Columbia, Canada. Our experiences are informed by …

Money Matters: Time For Prevention And Early Intervention To Address Family Economic Circumstances, Nick Axford, Vashti Berry Mar 2023

Money Matters: Time For Prevention And Early Intervention To Address Family Economic Circumstances, Nick Axford, Vashti Berry

Peninsula Medical School

Child poverty is associated with poorer physical and mental health, negative educational outcomes and adverse long-term social and psychological consequences, all of which impact on service demand and expenditure. Until now, however, prevention and early intervention practice has tended to focus on enhancing inter-parental relationships and parenting skills (e.g., via relationship skills education, home visiting, parenting programs, family therapy) or child language, social-emotional and life skills (e.g., early childhood education, school-based programs, youth mentoring). Programs often target low-income neighborhoods or families but rarely address poverty directly. While there is substantial evidence for the effectiveness of such interventions in improving child …

The Perception Of Stigma As A Barrier To Help-Seeking Among Immigrant Populations, Zuha Qadeer Mar 2023

The Perception Of Stigma As A Barrier To Help-Seeking Among Immigrant Populations, Zuha Qadeer

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

Immigrants receive mental health services less than their U.S.-born counterparts, even after accounting for the lower rate of mental health difficulties often found among these populations. Stigma is one such barrier that is significant in reducing mental health service utilization among immigrant populations. This study explores how immigrants perceive stigma as a barrier to seeking help for trauma-related mental health concerns. Using qualitative data from a study on an adaptation of Written Exposure Therapy in Latinx immigrants (Andrews et. al, 2022), I examined the role of stigma in participants’ perceived barriers to care and their proposed strategies for reducing them. …

What Factors Motivated Female And Minority Students To Pursue A Career In Healthcare, Ken Smith

Theses and Dissertations

KEN SMITH125 Pages This research study was conducted to determine what motivational factors influenced females and minority students to pursue a career in healthcare. Using Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs theory, this quantitative study suggests that there are three distinct motivational factors influencing minority students to pursue a healthcare as their future profession. This study surveyed current undergraduate students at four-year public institutions. These students completed an online survey known as the Portrait Value Questionnaire (PVQ), which is comprised of a series of questions based on the ten domains of values theory. Each individual portrait or item provides a description of …

High-Risk Sexual Behavior In Nebraska Adolescents; History, Risk Factors, And Mediation, Kiya Hudson

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

High-risk sexual behavior is a public health crisis that impacts adolescents at staggering rates. In Nebraska, rates of sexually transmitted infection (STI) and sexually transmitted disease (STD) cases have been on the rise over the last four years. The problem this paper addresses is the need to fill in the gaps in knowledge surrounding high-risk sexual behavior in Nebraska adolescents. It is important to address these gaps in knowledge because currently, we are failing our adolescents when it comes to providing them with all of the necessary skills, information, and tools to lead a healthy life. When we know how …
