Caregiver Emotional Support Following Child Sexual Abuse: Links With Child Adjustment Problems, Melissa Sitton

Psychology Theses and Dissertations

Emotional support is theorized to be beneficial to youth after experiences of sexual abuse. However, meta-analytic and systematic reviews of the literature indicate inconsistent evidence of relations between caregiver emotional support and youth functioning after sexual abuse. The current study addressed several methodological factors that may have contributed to inconsistent findings in this literature (i.e., small samples, poor measurement of emotional support, collection of data from only one source) and examined relations between caregiver emotional support and youth functioning after sexual abuse. Participants were 460 youth (Mage = 13.78, SD = 1.77) who presented at a child advocacy …

When They Came Home: Common Reintegration Issues And Interventions Of Female Iraq And Afghanistan Veterans, Taryn Ritchie

Honors Theses

With the increasing support of women entering traditionally male occupations, more females are becoming part of the veteran population. Because of the increasing population of women veterans, it is important to investigate the problems and support services exclusive to women. Previous research is limited when looking at the female veteran population and their experiences. This study strives to uncover through a qualitative descriptive research design the common issues that the population from Iraq and Afghanistan face in their process of reintegration into society. Some of these problems include finding community, finding identity, toxic male dominance. This study also evaluates the …

Relational Sanctification, Communal Coping, And Depression Among African American Couples, Antonius D. Skipper, Andrew H. Rose, Noel A. Card, Travis James Moore, Debra Lavender-Bratcher, Cassandra Chaney

Faculty Publications

Despite the common use of religious buffers, African Americans are disproportionately affected by depressive symptoms. Communal coping may serve as one factor in helping religious African American couples alleviate the symptoms of depression. This study examines the association between relational sanctification and depressive symptoms as mediated by the communal coping of 467 African American married and cohabiting couples. Data from the sampled couples were analyzed using a common fate model, and analyses revealed higher scores on the measure of sanctification were associated with more communal coping; more communal coping was associated with fewer depressive symptoms among women and men, and …

Insanity Defense Attitudes: The Impact Of Biological Sex, Mental Illness, And Jury Instruction, Haley Moon, Brooke Mann Oct 2023

Insanity Defense Attitudes: The Impact Of Biological Sex, Mental Illness, And Jury Instruction, Haley Moon, Brooke Mann

Psychology Faculty Publications

Approximately 20% of incarcerated individuals in jails and 15% of those in state prisons have been diagnosed with a serious mental illness, meaning that there are approximately 356,000 incarcerated persons with serious mental illness in jails and prisons alone (Torrey et al., 2014). Today, mental health stigma is widely prevalent amongst society and particularly there is a strong stigma associated with mental illness and criminality (Mossière & Maeder, 2015). Society typically perceives verdicts associated with insanity/mental illness as an alternative for not wanting to take responsibility for one’s actions and as a “loop-hole” to get out of serving time (Hans …

The Importance Of Cultural Competency: Improving Patient-Provider Relationships Improves Hispanic Health, Lizeth Tapia

Honors Theses

Background: Hispanics living in the U.S have poor health compared to Non-Hispanic Whites. Hispanics experience more disease, a higher likelihood of dying from chronic disease such as cancer, heart disease and unintentional injuries. Aside from prevention knowledge and access to healthcare, another factor that can affect Hispanic health is the patient-provider relationships. More specifically, culturally competent healthcare providers are more likely to have better communication and interactions with their patients as they understand their culture and can apply it into the healthcare setting. Therefore, cultural competency is key to improving health outcomes among Hispanic patients and an important skill to …

Analyzing African American College Student Willingness To Participate In Clinical Trials, Caitlin B. Ulmer Oct 2023

Analyzing African American College Student Willingness To Participate In Clinical Trials, Caitlin B. Ulmer

Senior Theses

Previous studies regarding African American participation in clinical trials have found that African Americans participate at a significantly lower rate than other ethnic/racial groups. Scholars argue that this lack of participation in clinical trials is a direct result of historical trauma linked to unethical experiments and African American distrust in the healthcare system. However, there is a gap in the literature because these studies focus on African American individuals above the age of 30. This study aimed to fill the gap by examining clinical trial participation among African American college students within the ages 18 to 23. This study also …

Environmental Loss, Displacement, And Anxiety In Portugal: Analyzing News Articles To Differentiate Manifestations Of Environmental Distress, Robin Greene

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Expressions of environmental distress can take different forms, with different symptoms, causes, and treatments. Existing literature generally identifies three primary categories of environmental distress responses: environmental grief, solastalgia, and eco-anxiety. This paper explores these distinctions and identifies words typically associated with each category in Portuguese news articles using Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA). LDA is a Natural Language Processing (NLP) technique that groups words into topics and identifies connections between those words based on how often those words appear together in sequences. This paper uses a modified LDA algorithm called GuidedLDA to identify additional keywords within topics defined by a list …
