Stevens-Johnson Syndrome/Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (SJS/TEN) is a predominantly drug-induced disease, with a mortality rate of 15-20%, that engages the expertise of multiple disciplines: dermatology, allergy, immunology, clinical pharmacology, burn surgery, ophthalmology, urogynecology, and psychiatry. SJS/TEN has an incidence of 1-5/million persons per year in the United States, with even higher rates globally. One of the challenges of SJS/TEN has been developing the research infrastructure and coordination to answer questions capable of transforming clinical care and leading to improved patient outcomes. SJS/TEN 2021, the third research meeting of its kind, was held as a virtual meeting on August 28-29, 2021. The …

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications
The present study investigates whether less computer access is associated with an increase or decrease in cyberbullying and face-to-face bullying victimization. Data were derived from the 2009–2010 Health Behavior in School-Aged Children U.S. Study, consisting of 12,642 adolescents aged 11, 13, and 15 years (Mage = 12.95). We found that less computer usage was negatively associated with cyberbullying victimization and face-to-face bullying victimization. The findings from the study have implications for research and practice.

Social Annotation: What Are Students’ Perceptions And How Does Social Annotation Relate To Grades?, Virginia Clinton-Lisell
Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications
Social annotation is a teaching and learning technique in which students post comments on electronic course materials in a shared space. The purpose of this study is to examine students’ perceptions of social annotation in the context of motivation and social justice. In addition, the connections between social annotation and course grades were examined. Students in a face-to-face course engaged in social annotation on their course textbook and completed a questionnaire on their perceptions (N = 41). Based on the findings, students had higher overall motivation for social annotation compared with quizzes. In contrast, comparisons of motivation between social …

In a post-pandemic learning era, student academic well-being emerges to the attention of educational researchers. Referring to students’ thoughts and behaviors that contribute to doing well in an educational context and their academic life satisfaction, student academic well-being has a significant influence on their recruitment and retention, learning experience, academic achievement, and competence development. However, while academic well-being has been regarded as an important indicator of student persistence in their current study and learning outcomes, limited studies have explored engineering students’ academic well-being and other supportive factors in engineering education. While several studies have examined how well-being is constituted and …
Northeast Tennessee Educators’ Perceptions Of Academic Outcomes Of High School Students Who Completed A Community-Based, Resilience-Informed Course Presented At School, Carla Whiles
Ed.D. Dissertations
Adverse childhood experiences negatively affected the mental and physical health of adults and children and were linked to cognitive difficulties and decreased academic outcomes at all levels of education. Resilience, the ability for one to bounce back from adversity, was widely accepted to mitigate the negative effects of adversities and resilience intervention programs were becoming more common in schools. The purpose of this qualitative interpretive study was to examine northeast Tennessee educators’ perceptions of the academic outcomes of high school students who completed a community-based, resilience-informed course presented at school. After conducting semi-structured interviews with 11 participants, I discovered the …

Food insecurity is a national issue that disproportionately impacts Louisiana citizens, contributing to the state’s poor health outcomes. We know that the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and food pantries improve access to food, but we have limited data on what interventions improve food insecurity. The Geaux Get Healthy Clinical Program at Our Lady of the Lake (GGHOLOL) is a clinic-based community program that leverages community partnerships and a clinical setting to provide education and access to resources for individuals with food insecurity. This prospective study examines the impact of GGHOLOL on food insecurity as a pre-post survey evaluation over …

Vignettes Expose Undergraduates’ Perceptions Of Consent And Sexual Assault: Implications For Sexual Assault Education, April N. Terry, Mackenzie Orchard Esq., Vivian Aranda-Hughes
Academic Leadership Journal in Student Research
Under Title IX and the 2011 Dear Colleague Letter, universities were reminded of their obligation to educate, prevent, and respond to sexual assaults and other forms of gender-based violence. The current study used a survey packet including a Rape Myth Acceptance scale, questions about related education, and a scale rating participants’ level of confidence on seven vignettes. The sample indicated participants were more likely to recognize whether consent was given than they were to recognize whether the vignette met legal standards for sexual assault. The results can provide universities with information to better individualize their sexual assault prevention efforts.

Public service organizations (PSOs) link on the one hand the government and the law, and on the other hand citizens, via the delivery of public services. Based on the state of the art of standards, principles and processes of human/user-centered service design, we analyze the practices in Dutch PSOs. The basis for this are practices documented on a weblog by a practitioner-researcher reporting and reflecting on four projects over five years. Based on this online journal we identified five themes that influence human/user-centered service design in PSO-practices. 1) Tension between collective and individual needs, 2) Public services should be inclusive …

The paper explores relevant themes for design research that arose from research works proposed for IASDR2023 and developed by doctoral candidates and recent master's degree graduates. Particular attention has been paid to research investigations that reflect on the theme of Life-Changing Design, specifically examining how design is responding to the transformations occurring in the contemporary period. Reflections on the soft impact of technologies, in particular digital technologies, on daily life are accompanied by an analysis of innovations and challenges faced by healthcare systems, products, and services. This is followed by an examination of social innovation themes and practices, and the …

Textile Autobiographies: Crafting Shifting Identities With Refugee Communities, Francesco Mazzarella, Seher Mirza
IASDR Conference Series
With the rising mass displacement of people, rethinking and addressing the needs and aspirations of refugee communities and honouring their diverse cultures is needed. Historically, the textile heritage of minorities has often been subjected to cultural appropriation practices or systematically undervalued and ‘othered’ as ‘non-fashion’. Designers are often ‘parachuted’ into marginalised or disadvantaged communities premised on bringing their own knowledge and expertise to solve other people’s problems. However, there is growing recognition of the need to ‘decolonise’ such dominant approaches in collaborative design practice. Instead of re-enacting dominant power narratives, London-based refugees and asylum seekers were engaged in storytelling sessions …

Designing Collective Racial Healing Spaces, Angelica Sibrian, Nekita Thomas, Terresa Moses, Lisa Elzey Mercer
IASDR Conference Series
Spaces for collective racial healing within predominantly White institutions are meant to support the path to collective liberation for Black, Indigenous, and students of color. It is imperative that we intentionally create racial healing spaces that support the identities and experiences of students of color on a predominantly White institution. We assert that physical spaces support empowerment and create access to opportunities for students of color through protection, healing, and community. The question that guides this work is, how might people with an agency within institutions of higher learning build sustainable, inclusive, and supportive spaces for and with Black, Indigenous, …

Changing The Narrative: Co-Designing Awareness About Environmental Sustainability With Children In Denmark, Canan Akoglu, Marie Kremer, Craig Native
IASDR Conference Series
The world is facing pressing environmental challenges calling for urgent actions in different levels. In this type of a picture, the earlier the actions are taken, the better future for next generations could be created. In the context of sustainable innovation, by codesigning activities that promote sustainability, young minds can become much conscious about environmental sustainability in a joyful and interactive way. This paper investigates how design can trigger sustainable behavioural change in people with a specific focus on engaging with children. The investigation is done through 3 cases which were created during a first-year master’s course in collaboration with …

Participatory Design Of Service Innovation To Support People And Their Carers In Moray, Jay Bradley, Sonya Lizbeth Joseph, Linda Shore, Marlene Harkis
IASDR Conference Series
This paper describes the findings of a participatory-design project focused on the use of modern, digital technologies to support people and their carers. In particular, to improve access to services, better co-ordinate services and to make support packages more resilient (more likely to reduce a crisis situation and more likely to last longer before needing changes). The design activities were: a focus group and three participatory design workshops, all with health and care professionals, and several interviews with unpaid carers. The work all took place in Moray, Scotland. The findings are presented as designed concepts and insights that should help …
Relational Design Practices In Design For Social Innovation: A Place-Centred Approach, Annalinda De Rosa, Marco Andrea Finardi, Valentina Auricchio
Relational Design Practices In Design For Social Innovation: A Place-Centred Approach, Annalinda De Rosa, Marco Andrea Finardi, Valentina Auricchio
IASDR Conference Series
This paper reflects on how relational art can contribute to participatory approaches in design for social innovation research and practices applied in community engagement processes towards the regeneration of commons in rural contexts. Inland areas, small towns far from large urban centres, today face urgent challenges to counter the process of abandonment and devaluation. The loss of primary services such as schools and the exodus to the cities increase their fragility. In the wake of the pandemic, many reflections on the role of public space have emerged: the recovery of a renewed human scale dimension and the need to manage …
