Evaluating The Mental Health Of Newly Graduated Nurses In Transition From Undergraduate Training To Professional Practice, Victor Louis C. Alinas Iv
Nursing | Student Research Posters
Background: There is an increasing demand for nurses worldwide as healthcare systems slowly recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. Simultaneously, there is a high turnover of registered nurses and an even higher turnover in the demographic of newly graduated nurses. Newly graduated nurses (NGNs) are constantly faced with high levels of stress upon starting out in the professional environment and as a result of mental burnout and inadequate preparation, there is a notably high turnover of newly graduated nurses within their first year of employment. Purpose: This research aims to use existing information on the transition from undergraduate training to professional …

Expansion And Ineffectiveness: The Evolution Of The Mexican Healthcare System, Leslie Bejaran Solorio
Expansion And Ineffectiveness: The Evolution Of The Mexican Healthcare System, Leslie Bejaran Solorio
History and Political Science | Senior Theses
In the 1917 Mexican Constitution, Article 123 Section Number 14, health became an occupational right in which the employer paid for sickness and injuries, a right advocated in the Mexican Revolution. Despite this, it was not until 1943, with the creation of Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (Mexican Social Security Institute), that it became a reality. Following the creation of social security, other programs were established for federal workers (the Institute for Social Security and Services for State Workers), oil workers (Mexican Petroleum Company), and the armed forces (Ministry of National Defense and Secretariat of the Navy). Even then, the …
Trauma Informed Theology: A Framework For Developing A Culturally Competent African American Intimate Partner Violence Curriculum For The Pentecostal Clergy, Bridget P. Robinson
Trauma Informed Theology: A Framework For Developing A Culturally Competent African American Intimate Partner Violence Curriculum For The Pentecostal Clergy, Bridget P. Robinson
Doctor of Ministry
The objective of this dissertation study is to increase the awareness of intimate partner violence (IPV) among Pentecostal clergy. African American women experience higher rates of intimate partner violence in the United States. There are unique risk factors for IPV in the African American community, considering the social and cultural context of the African American experience during colonization and post-colonization. Throughout these experiences, the Black church has consistently served as a steadfast source of hope for the community. However, considering the concerning prevalence of IPV among the African American community, church leaders may not be aware of the profound effects …
How Does The Transition From A Subject-Based Allocation Fund Structure To A One-Pot Allocation Fund Structure Impact Librarian Spending And Attitudes Toward Spending?: One Libraries' Experience With A One-Pot Allocation Approach For One-Time Acquisitions Spending, Anne Larrivee
University Libraries Faculty Publications
Every fiscal year, academic libraries must decide how to fairly allocate funds for their collection of one-time materials. A common approach is to divide these one-time funds between subject areas based on historic, quantitative, or expressed needs. A less mainstream approach is to combine all these funds into a single source of funds for one-time purchases. This article examines librarian response after transitioning from a subject-based allocation to a one-pot allocation approach for its one-time acquisitions. Methods of expenditure analysis and semi-structured interviews were used to assess the approach's effectiveness and librarian attitudes. The results of this study provide a …

Revues de littérature, synthèses de connaissances
With the overall objective of providing implication for clinical and research practices regarding the identification and measurement of modifiable predicting factors for return to work (RTW) in people with musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) and common mental disorders (CMDs), this study 1) systematically examined and synthetized the research evidence available in the literature on the topic, and 2) critically evaluated the tools used to measure each identified factor. A systematic search of prognostic studies was conducted, considering four groups of Keywords: 1) population (i.e., MSDs or CMDs), 2) study design (prospective), 3) modifiable factors, 4) outcomes of interest (i.e., RTW). Studies showing …

Trauma-Informed Digital Health Interventions: A Scoping Review, Amelea Lowery
Public Health Theses
Background: Trauma exposure is a pervasive issue around the world and the impacts of trauma can be long lasting and detrimental to individual and population health outcomes. Trauma responses can influence and determine an individual or community’s approach in seeking supportive resources. Given the critical role of supportive resources and the prevalent use of technology and internet use, it is essential to understand how digital health interventions contribute to addressing trauma explicitly. This scoping review aims to explore the landscape of trauma-informed digital health interventions for adults, assess their outcomes, and identify their measurable impacts across various settings. Methods: A scoping …
Community Health Workers To Strengthen Hiv Care Continuum And Prep Delivery In The Us/Hics: A Scoping Review, Vanessa Abigail Nunez
Community Health Workers To Strengthen Hiv Care Continuum And Prep Delivery In The Us/Hics: A Scoping Review, Vanessa Abigail Nunez
Public Health Theses
Introduction: With the ongoing global HIV/AIDS burden, community-based service delivery models are increasingly recognized, with community health workers (CHWs) at the forefront. In high-income countries (HICs) like the United States, CHWs have long served marginalized communities, gaining recent legislative attention. Despite this, there's still a need for comprehensive evidence on CHW integration in healthcare delivery.
Methodology: We conducted a scoping review to gather available evidence on community health workers (CHWs) and their impact on HIV outcomes in HICs, and to identify evidence gaps in the use of community-based HIV/PrEP services in HICs. Using the American Public Health Association’s definition of …

Sepsis Screening And Bundle Adherence: Staff Education As An Intervention To Increase Knowledge In A Medical Surgical Clinical Microsystem, Nicole Elise Maheu
Master's Theses and Capstones
Background: Sepsis-related deaths outnumber those caused by opioids, breast cancer, and prostate cancer combined (Nguyen, 2020). Sepsis places a significant health burden and cost burden on both an individual and a systemic level, emphasizing the need for proper care of the sepsis patient in all inpatient settings.
Local Problem: Within a medical-surgical microsystem, it was found that care of the sepsis patient was inadequate. A pre-intervention survey was conducted which demonstrated a lack in knowledge of the inpatient sepsis workflow, including use of the sepsis best practice advisory (BPA) within EPIC® and the sepsis bundle of care. Additionally, according to …

Empowering Parents As Partners In Learning: Practices For Developing A Robust Home Learning Environment, Jennifer L. Bencivengo
Empowering Parents As Partners In Learning: Practices For Developing A Robust Home Learning Environment, Jennifer L. Bencivengo
Doctor of Education (Ed.D.)
Parents are often considered a child’s first teacher. However, not all parents are equipped with adequate strategies or have access to equitable resources to provide a rich home learning environment for their children. Bodies of research consistently identify discrepancies in kindergarten readiness from a social, emotional, and academic learning vantage point when discussing foundational literacy skills, the overreliance on technology, and developmentally appropriate executive functioning skills (Bassok & Reardon, 2013a; Jung, 2016; Reardon & Portilla, 2016a; Wolf & McCoy, 2019a). In an attempt to address the inequities in school readiness has more recently been examined with focus on community based …

Upstream Lawyering: A Framework For Poverty Law, Kate Mitchell
Faculty Publications & Other Works
This Article introduces an upstream lawyering framework within the context of the history of poverty law and impact lawyering. While there have been several theories promoting systems change work, the upstream framework, stemming from public health theories and championed by medical-legal partnerships, offers a model for promoting and informing systemic policy. Using the public health concept of upstreaming, this Article explores lawyering practices that can be utilized to address the root causes of social and legal drivers of health inequity, poverty, and oppression. Part I of this Article provides a refreshed overview of the history of poverty law and civil …

Guideline For Creating A Support Group For Adults With Down Syndrome Who Suffer With Prolonged Grief, Brandon Chace Warman
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects - Archive
Adults with Down syndrome process and express their grief differently from the general population. There are a multitude of support groups and organizations for individuals grieving a loss and experiencing prolonged grief but there are none that exist for people with Down syndrome. This project develops a guideline for creating support groups aimed at adults with Down syndrome who experience prolonged grief. Fifty-one pieces of literature from all over the world were reviewed to formulate recommendations that were graded by seven stakeholders. These recommendations were then used to develop a guideline for creating support groups for this population. Analysis of …
Sticks And Stones: A Look At The Effects Of Microinsults And Stereotype Threat On Sustainable Career Outcomes, Shona G. Smith
Sticks And Stones: A Look At The Effects Of Microinsults And Stereotype Threat On Sustainable Career Outcomes, Shona G. Smith
Management Dissertations - Archive
Subtle forms of workplace discrimination have many adverse consequences for employees and organizations (Jones et al., 2016). Microinsults – a type of microaggression “characterized by interpersonal or environmental communications that convey stereotypes, rudeness, and insensitivity and that demean a person’s racial, gender, or sexual orientation, heritage, or identity” (Sue, 2010, p. 31) – are one form of subtle discrimination that may be pervasive in organizations. As they are invisible and ambiguous (Sue et al., 2008), some research suggests that microinsults are more taxing than overt forms of discrimination because they involve guesswork and sensemaking for the target to process their …
Posttraumatic Stress And Drug Use: Ethnic-Racial Identity As A Moderator For Women Of Color Enduring Partner Violence, Jewelia J. Ferguson
Posttraumatic Stress And Drug Use: Ethnic-Racial Identity As A Moderator For Women Of Color Enduring Partner Violence, Jewelia J. Ferguson
Open Access Master's Theses
Intimate partner violence is highly prevalent, with approximately 1 in 2 women reporting experiences of intimate partner violence (IPV) at some point in their lifetime. Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is etiologically tied to trauma -- including experiences of IPV --and is associated with drug use-related harm. Women of color experience higher rates of IPV, PTSD, and drug use-related harm compared to their white counterparts; however, a dearth of research has been conducted on the relation between PTSD symptoms and drug use-related harm among women of color experiencing IPV. Moreover, a dearth of research has identified factors that may ameliorate the …

What’S Harm Reduction Got To Do With It? A Study Of The Implementation Of Substance Use Management Practices Among A Sample Of U.S. Domestic Violence Programs, Stephanie H. Ratliff
Theses and Dissertations--Social Work
Domestic violence programs are essential resources for survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV). Programs offer services that go beyond providing safety and shelter. To improve outcomes, program staff have expanded services to meet the needs of survivors. One population of survivors that has gained attention in the peer-reviewed literature is survivors who use substances (SWUS). These survivors have unique needs and are at increased risk of IPV due to substance misuse. Research about the support available to SWUS after they access shelter is scarce. Using cross-sectional data from a national sample of 97 U.S. domestic violence programs, this study describes …
Fathers’ Perspectives On The Role Of Spirituality In Substance Misuse Disorder Treatment And Engaging With Their Children, Kendra Michelle Eubank
Fathers’ Perspectives On The Role Of Spirituality In Substance Misuse Disorder Treatment And Engaging With Their Children, Kendra Michelle Eubank
Theses and Dissertations--Social Work
The father's role and the extent of involvement with his children have shifted over the past several decades. As a result, researchers have made considerable advances in understanding paternal influences on child development and families. However, one under-researched topic is how fathers' substance misuse, and the recovery process may influence father involvement and effective co-parenting, and specifically, how spirituality plays a role in that. In this qualitative study, fourteen participants participated in semi-structured interviews. The data revealed two main themes: 1) pillars of a spiritual awakening and 2) applying spirituality to healthy fatherhood engagement.
These findings led to four interpretations: …
Links Between Perceived Mother-Adolescent And Father-Adolescent Conflict And Low Self-Control: A Cross-National Comparative Study, Tory Thomas
Theses and Dissertations--Family Sciences
The influence of parent-adolescent relationships and adolescent adjustment have been well-documented. Self-control has emerged as a key probabilistic construct in understanding adjustment, well-being, and life success. The present study tests the links between adolescent perceptions of maternal and paternal conflict and self-control. In addition, to understand the extent to which cultural developmental context impacts these associations, the study will employ a cross-cultural comparative lens to test whether cultural context moderates these links. Self-report data were collected from N = 4,924 adolescents (Mage = 16.97 years, 54.08% female) across four countries (China, Czech Republic, Turkey, and the United States). In by …
Malleability Of Abortion Attitudes, Allison Leip
Malleability Of Abortion Attitudes, Allison Leip
Theses and Dissertations--Family Sciences
Although abortion attitudes have been thoroughly investigated and population-level attitudes have not changed much over the past half-century, polls and research inquiring about abortion attitudes tend to ask isolated questions about if, and in what circumstances, abortion should be legal. The purpose of this study was to examine the extent to which abortion attitudes both varied and changed according to several contextual factors. A multiple-segment factorial vignette was conducted with 530 respondents in the state of Kentucky. Overall, most respondents held strong attitudes on access to abortion, both before the rationale was provided and regardless of the rationale provided. However, …

Vicarious Trauma And Doctoral Graduate Trainees: The Physiological Impact Of High-Acuity Patient Care, Alicia M. Mann
Vicarious Trauma And Doctoral Graduate Trainees: The Physiological Impact Of High-Acuity Patient Care, Alicia M. Mann
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
There is comprehensive literature regarding vicarious traumatization in mental health providers. Previous research identifies underlying mental health conditions and limited clinical exposure as increased risk factors for vicarious traumatization. Graduate student mental health has recently been described as a significant public health problem. Although some research exists on the impact of high-acuity clinical work on psychology graduate students, there has been limited attention on the physical impact of vicarious traumatization. The current study assessed the relationship between graduate trainees’ subjective anxiety levels and heart rate variability in response to high-acuity client work. Results indicated that doctoral trainees with high levels …
Evaluating Professional Clinical Competency Development In Doctor Of Psychology Students Using Multiple Methods Of Evaluation: Peer, Supervisor, And Self-Assessment, Jodi Lynn Brents

Reliability Analysis Of The Basc-3 Srp-A Content Scales With American Indian/Alaska Native Adolescents, Ryan Johnson
Reliability Analysis Of The Basc-3 Srp-A Content Scales With American Indian/Alaska Native Adolescents, Ryan Johnson
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
Historical trauma and context are necessary to comprehend and properly assess present-day issues faced by American Indian/Alaska Native communities. Historically, psychology research has not included minoritized and marginalized populations. A literature review pinpointed early assessment and intervention as critical for adolescents Although psychologists are increasingly aware of the importance of utilizing culturally-informed constructs, there is a lag in the update of assessment instruments. The BASC-3 is complex multidimensional assessment tool with potential to identify early-life issues for targeted intervention. Research on the reliability and validity of the BASC-3 is limited and sparse (Yetter & Foutch, 2017; Higa 2022), noting particular …
The Effectiveness Of Group Treatments For Veterans: A Meta-Analysis, Janine S. Hazel
The Effectiveness Of Group Treatments For Veterans: A Meta-Analysis, Janine S. Hazel
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
Transitioning into civilian life after serving in the military can be a huge adjustment for many military members. The military lifestyle and culture are unique structures that become a large part of military members’ identity and belief systems. For decades, veterans have struggled with several mental health issues and other poor outcomes at higher rates than non-military individuals (i.e., depression, PTSD, suicidal ideation, homelessness, financial distress). Often, these poor outcomes can leave veterans feeling alone and misunderstood by their non-military community—impacting their ability to reintegrate into civilian life successfully. Social isolation and a lack of felt interconnectedness negatively affect veterans’ …
