Rehabilitation For Enduring Change: Toward Evidence-Based Corrections, Michael Rocque
Rehabilitation For Enduring Change: Toward Evidence-Based Corrections, Michael Rocque
All Faculty Scholarship
Since Robert Martinson’s famous declaration that there was little evidence on the effectiveness of rehabilitation, correctional research on what works to reduce recidivism has proliferated. There is a vast body of literature indicating that programs and interventions, when applied appropriately in prison or in the community, can be effective. Intervention approaches with relatively strong evidence include (1) educational/vocational, (2) cognitive-behavioral therapy, (3) substance use/abuse, and some evidence for (4) sex offender programs. However, there is a large amount of variability in the results of evaluations, and the sources of that variability need to be interrogated. While there is increasingly good …

Identifying Barriers To Mental Health Services Utilization For Black Youth In The United States: A Qualitative Study, Emily Stein, Matthew Hutnyan, Neely Myers
SMU Journal of Undergraduate Research
Mental health in Black communities and racial/ethnic disparities in mental health service utilization remain growing concerns. Evidence suggests that psychotic disorders may be more prevalent among Black individuals than white individuals and the Black community faces barriers to care that can negatively influence outcomes. To better understand these barriers, we interviewed mental healthcare providers (n = 11) and Black young adults with first-person experience of psychosis (n = 13) about the experiences of minority young adults with mental health treatment. We analyzed interview transcripts and, consistent with constructivist grounded theory methods, identified iterative patterns across individuals about barriers to care. …

The Qualitative Report
This autoethnographic study examines how music learning is influenced by teachers and socio-cultural environments and how this influences not only our musical journeys but the way we view our lives, of the progress we have made, the goals in which we hope to achieve, and the way we perceive we will achieve them. This study explores how my musical background, understanding, learning, music-making abilities, and skills have shaped my present beliefs, attitudes and identity as a musician, educator, and researcher. Focusing on teacher pedagogy and practice, the study reveals how prevailing teacher-centred and didactic approaches to teaching impact the perspectives …

Integrating Health Equity Into Implementation Science To Advance Chronic Disease Prevention And Control, Callie Walsh-Bailey
Brown School Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Marginalized populations are inequitably burdened by chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and cancer. The goal of health equity work is to ensure all people have a fair and just opportunity to achieve optimal health. Implementation science has made health equity a greater focus and priority in recent years. There has been a proliferation of guidance on what implementation science needs to do to advance equity. However, the field currently lacks specific, actionable guidance on how to integrate equity. The overarching goal of this dissertation is to synthesize conceptual and theoretical underpinnings regarding health equity and bring them …

Information Sciences Letters
In this study, we investigate the role of behavioral economics in assisting small and medium enterprise (SME) owners in overcoming the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. By understanding the psychological factors that influence decision-making, behavioral economics provides insights into biases and heuristics that can cloud judgment during times of uncertainty and stress. This understanding helps SME owners make more rational choices and offers practical strategies to promote positive behaviors and mitigate the negative impact of the pandemic. Clear and timely communication is essential, enabling SME owners to access vital information about government support programs, safety protocols, and financial assistance. …

“So, Do Not Fear”: Religion And The Prevalence, Persistence, And Severity Of Anxiety Disorders Among Black Americans, Ann W. Nguyen, Nichole Cobb, Kedong Ding
Faculty Scholarship
Background: There is a dearth of scholarship that explicates the effects of religious participation on anxiety disorders among Black Americans. A better understanding of the links between religious participation, a coping resource, and anxiety disorders among Black Americans remains essential, given Black Americans are less likely than their white counterparts to seek professional treatment for mental health problems, leading to greater unmet mental health needs. The aim of this study was to investigate whether religious participation is associated with the prevalence, persistence, and severity of anxiety disorders among Black adults. Methods: We used a national sample of Black adults (N …

Aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase (AADC) deficiency is a rare genetic disorder of monoamine neurotransmitter synthesis that presents with a range of symptoms, including motor dysfunction and limited attainment of developmental motor milestones. The approval of eladocagene exuparvovec, a gene therapy for AADC deficiency with demonstrated efficacy for motor improvements, now expands the range of motor outcomes possible for patients with this disorder. However, recommendations and guidelines for therapy following treatment with gene therapy are lacking. To ensure patients can reach their full potential following treatment with gene therapy, it is essential they receive rehabilitation therapies designed specifically with their impairments …
