A Jewish Voice In The Public Square, Gerard V. Bradley Jan 1994

A Jewish Voice In The Public Square, Gerard V. Bradley

Journal Articles

David Novak: Jewish Social Ethics. (New York: Oxford University Press, 1992. Pp. xii, 252. $45.00.)

Jewish participation in American public life has been either genuinely or constructively de-Judaized. (Admittedly, many orthodox Jews - the Hasidim among them - have steered clear altogether of the public square.) "Genuinely" de-Judaized Jews are simply those like Frankfurter who have a thoroughly secular outlook. "Constructively" de-Judaized Jews include the orthodox, observant Pfeffer. For them religious conviction (and practice) are private matters, checked at the entrance to the "naked public square." Quite obviously, Jews had good reason, especially in 1947, to prefer a secular …

The Circumplex Model: A Method Of Discovering Church Typologies, Eric Lynnon Cupp May 1993

The Circumplex Model: A Method Of Discovering Church Typologies, Eric Lynnon Cupp

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the amount of cohesion and the level of adaptability present among members of the Eastern Hills Church of Christ. Given this information, the members of the congregation were asked a single question to gauge their level of satisfaction with the church. The Eastern Hills Church of Christ is a diverse group, comprised from two churches in Athens, Texas, plus many people who have moved in from metropolitan areas. The objective of this project is to empirically test the factors of cohesion and adaptability and to use that information to find the typology of the congregation. The typological …

The Persistence Of Ethnicity In African American Popular Music: A Theology Of Rap Music, Angela M. S. Nelson Jan 1992

The Persistence Of Ethnicity In African American Popular Music: A Theology Of Rap Music, Angela M. S. Nelson

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

The racial oppression of black people in many ways has fueled and shaped black musical forms in America. One example is the blues which originated in the rural South among poor, nonliterate, agrarian African Americans.[1] In the North the music became more formalized, and singers such as Gertrude "Ma" Rainey, Bessie Smith, Mamie Smith, Ida Cox, and Sarah Martin became known as the queens of the "classic blues." Another musical genre is jazz, which was largely based on the twelve-bar blues harmonic structure and phrasing. It was more "polished" than the earlier New Orleans jazz at the turn of the …

A Comparative Study Of 'People' In The Old Testament And The Minjung Concept, Hyun Sup Um May 1991

A Comparative Study Of 'People' In The Old Testament And The Minjung Concept, Hyun Sup Um

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of this study is to find out whether or not the concept of עִס in the Old Testament is the same as it is used in Minjung theology. Therefore the first part of this thesis will deal with outside influences, such as secular theology, the theology of hope, liberation theology, process theology, and theology of history on Minjung theologians, specifically on these three: Jung Choon Kim, Hee Suh Moon, and Joon Suh Park. All three insist that the origin of Israel was the Habiru. Therefore the origin of עִס (Israel) in the Old Testament will also be treated. …

Arbitration And The U.S. Supreme Court: A Plea For Statutory Reform, Thomas E. Carbonneau Jan 1990

Arbitration And The U.S. Supreme Court: A Plea For Statutory Reform, Thomas E. Carbonneau

Faculty Scholarship

This Article argues for stabilizing and preserving arbitration's necessary and valuable vocation in dispute resolution. It outlines the basic stages in the evolution of the American law of arbitration and studies the underlying motivation of each of its historical phases. It attributes vital significance to the legislative and decisional law developments that led to an early rehabilitation of arbitration in American law, beginning with the enactment of the United States Arbitration Act (FAA) in 1925 and continuing with the ratification of the New York Arbitration Convention and the elaboration of a "hospitable" federal caselaw. Eventually, these developments gave rise to …

The Concept Of Contextualization And Its Implications For The Seventh-Day Adventist Theological Education In India, Melchizedek M. Ponniah Jan 1986

The Concept Of Contextualization And Its Implications For The Seventh-Day Adventist Theological Education In India, Melchizedek M. Ponniah

Dissertations

Problem

The Seventh-day Adventist chruch in India operates in a rapidly changing pluralistic context and a predominantly Hindu culture. Response to the emerging opportunities and demands suggest the reconstruction of theological education in more contextual terms. It is imperative that the institutions and practice of ministry be shaped and evaluated in terms of the manifold functions to be performed in the varegated and highly differentiated cultures within which the Adventist church functions.

Method

This study utilized the historical and descriptive methods. Literature was reviewed to gather concepts related to the concept of contextualization and contextualization of theological education.

Legal Scholarship And Legal Education, Graham Parker Oct 1985

Legal Scholarship And Legal Education, Graham Parker

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

Legal scholarship must be related to legal education, so that teaching does not reflect only one aspect of legal training, whether it be black-letter law, clinical training, or feeble attempts to graft on bits of other disciplines. Instead, students must be exposed to a true synthesis of law and other disciplines and areas of learning. This will require a serious reconsideration of teaching methods, preparation of teaching materials, and ways of testing law students. Academic law should not be merely reflexive. Some attempt must be made, if possible, to avoid the intellectual lag of the law. It may be necessary …

History, Action And Identity In "Upon Appleton House": Andrew Marvell And The New Historicism, Theodore Chen Jan 1985

History, Action And Identity In "Upon Appleton House": Andrew Marvell And The New Historicism, Theodore Chen

Honors Papers

The present study on Marvell's "Upon Appleton House" has its genesis in an earlier explication of the 'Horatian Ode,' I was then fascinated by Marvell's isolation of the individual within the larger picture of the historical process and planned, when the opportunity arose, to explore this concern within the context of seventeenth-century historiography and political theory. Although the topic was solid enough on a practical level, it proved difficult to treat both individual texts and subjects as only products of their times on a theoretical level. My reservations were due not so much to any growing allegiance to a formalist …

An Examination Of Personal Salvation In The Theology Of North American Evangelicalism: On The Road To A Theology Of Social Justice, Robert F.J. Gmeindl Jan 1980

An Examination Of Personal Salvation In The Theology Of North American Evangelicalism: On The Road To A Theology Of Social Justice, Robert F.J. Gmeindl

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The question under consideration is the effect of the belief in personal salvation on the theology of North American Evangelicalism, for the purpose of developing a theology of social justice.

This study is a preliminary investigation of the history of Evangelical individualism and the potential influence that individualism might have on Evangelical theology. Certain trends toward isolation and separation, as well as a tendency to neglect what I have called systemic evil, are examined to see how they may result from the Evangelical stress on individualism. Also presented in a skeletal outline of Marcuse’s analysis of one-dimensional society in order …

Religion And Right In The Philosophia Christriana Of Erasmus From Rotterdam, Erik Wolf Jan 1978

Religion And Right In The Philosophia Christriana Of Erasmus From Rotterdam, Erik Wolf

UC Law Journal

Although the works of the great humanist, Erasmus, have had a profound effect upon modern discussions of social questions, his attempt to formulate a Christian theory of justice has been almost completely ignored. In this Article, the author examines Erasmus's Philosophia Christiana and discusses the elements of legal theology which it contains.

Hope: A General Meaning Analysis, Peter L. Lavalley Jan 1973

Hope: A General Meaning Analysis, Peter L. Lavalley

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Talk of hope and the future is in the air and very much a part of the world of twentieth-century man. At the same time there is the awareness that the actions of men today often belie the expression of their hopes for a better way of life. The resolution of this conflict is no simple matter, but may be assisted through a more complete understanding of the meaning of human hope. It may then be possible to translate that meaning into individual, social, and national realities. This paper will attend primarily to the former question—that of attaining a fuller …
