The Tools Of One-Handed Zen : Hakuin Ekaku's Technological And Artistic Charisma., Brandon James Harwood 1982- May 2015

The Tools Of One-Handed Zen : Hakuin Ekaku's Technological And Artistic Charisma., Brandon James Harwood 1982-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

When people think of a Zen kōan, they probably think of Hakuin’s “What is the sound of one hand clapping?” This is appropriate as Hakuin’s ministry has become such an important part of Rinzai Zen that all current masters trace their lineage to him. In this paper, I hope to illuminate one of the reasons that Hakuin became so influential in his time and in the history of Japanese Zen. I argue that Hakuin was a charismatic teacher that used the technological innovations of woodblock printing and the wealth of some of his students to duplicate and disseminate his paintings …

Of Dogs And Disciples: Gentiles And The Discourse Of Identity In The Gospel Of Matthew, Angela D. Ingram May 2015

Of Dogs And Disciples: Gentiles And The Discourse Of Identity In The Gospel Of Matthew, Angela D. Ingram

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

This thesis examines some of the ways that the narrative of the Gospel of Matthew functions rhetorically, within the context of a broader first-century Jewish-Christian discourse of identity, to construct insider identity—i.e., to construct disciples—in relation to non-Jews. The focus, in particular, is on two key tensions regarding non-Jews in the narrative context of the gospel: 1) the tension between the negative stereotypical "Gentiles" of Jesus discourse and the very positive portrayal of some Gentile characters in the narrative; and 2) the tension between the two commissions of Jesus to his disciples, between his first command to "go nowhere among …

Counting The Blades Of Grass: Series, Punctum, And The Averted Gaze In W. G. Sebald's The Emigrants, Lane Glisson May 2015

Counting The Blades Of Grass: Series, Punctum, And The Averted Gaze In W. G. Sebald's The Emigrants, Lane Glisson

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

W. G. Sebald's novel The Emigrants presents an oblique view of the suppressed history of the Nazi era, through the lives of four emigrants from Germany. Sebald's unique manner of weaving biographical material, evidence, and photographs into his fiction, creates a misty world, neither fact nor fiction, in which the reader is never certain what is true or counterfeit. A series of recurring motifs and visual themes run through all the stories. This work examines how new forms of understanding arise in the spaces between The Emigrants' themes, punctuated by recurring imagery. It examines the nineteenth and twentieth century …

The Mystical Union Of Infant Baptism: How Baptists Contributed To The Idea Of Race By Their Rejection Of Infant Baptism, Isaiah E. Jones May 2015

The Mystical Union Of Infant Baptism: How Baptists Contributed To The Idea Of Race By Their Rejection Of Infant Baptism, Isaiah E. Jones

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In the first three centuries CE, the sacrament of baptism proved to be a universal tool which united people beyond age, race, or ethnicity as we understand it today. To put it simply, the theological meaning of baptism was reinforced by the sacrament of infant baptism. That is to say that the Christian faith was for all, irrespective of one’s race, age, or social-status. This openness to Christianity changed in the early modern period. In the seventeenth century the Baptists rejected infant baptism, for a more rational faith based on Enlightenment and Romantic assumptions. What the Baptists did not realize …

An Online Wear State Monitoring Methodology For Off-The-Shelf Embedded Processors, Srinath Arunachalam May 2015

An Online Wear State Monitoring Methodology For Off-The-Shelf Embedded Processors, Srinath Arunachalam

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Every year transistors are becoming smaller and smaller. The continued trend of transistors becoming smaller has led to double amount of transistors being placed in the same area of space from its previous generation. This has led to an exponential increase in the amount of power per unit volume on-chip, which has resulted in increasing temperature. In turn, the increase in temperature directly leads to the increase in the rate of wear of a processor. Negative-bias temperature instability (NBTI) is one of the most dominant integrated circuit (IC) failure mechanisms [5, 13] that strongly depends on temperature. NBTI manifests in …

Characteristics Of Stem Success: A Survival Analysis Model Of Factors Influencing Time To Graduation Among Undergraduate Stem Majors, Riley K. Acton Apr 2015

Characteristics Of Stem Success: A Survival Analysis Model Of Factors Influencing Time To Graduation Among Undergraduate Stem Majors, Riley K. Acton

Business and Economics Honors Papers

Producing more graduates in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), as well as ensuring students complete college in a timely manner are both areas of national public policy interest. In order to improve these two outcomes, it is imperative to understand what factors lead undergraduate students to persist in, and ultimately graduate with STEM degrees. This paper uses data from the Beginning Postsecondary Students Longitudinal Study, provided by The National Center of Education Statistics, to model the time to baccalaureate degree among STEM majors using a Cox proportional hazard model.

Reweaving The History Of Two Late Antique Egyptian Textiles: An Analysis On Textile Fragments From The Institute Of Egyptian Art And Archaeology At The University Of Memphis (2004.1.4) And The Victoria And Albert Museum, London (294-1887), Katlyn Anne Greiner Apr 2015

Reweaving The History Of Two Late Antique Egyptian Textiles: An Analysis On Textile Fragments From The Institute Of Egyptian Art And Archaeology At The University Of Memphis (2004.1.4) And The Victoria And Albert Museum, London (294-1887), Katlyn Anne Greiner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

My thesis focuses on the analysis of two Late Antique Egyptian textiles: Institute of Egyptian Art and Archaeology UM/IEAA 2004.1.4 and Victoria and Albert Museum, London 294-1887. Using stylistic, iconographic, and technical analyses, I was able to match these two fragments, in addition to identifying theirprobable location of manufacture and date. The IEAA textile contains three separate pieces, a neckband and two clavi, sewn together. Observations revealed that these decorative elements were recycled from earlier garments and were reused together based on pomegranate imagery. The IEAA clavi employ anunusual motif, which I identified as a composite representation of the pomegranate …

Have You Paid Your Rent? Servant Leadership In Correctional Education, Alana Jeaniece Simmons, Latosha M. Branch

Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)

This article makes the case for servant leadership as a model and as a philosophy to guide correctional educationalists on how to interact with their students. This article begins with an introduction to identify the gap in the literature with regards to the relationship between servant leadership and adult and correctional education. It continues with a summary of the 10 characteristics of servant leadership that parallel some of the characteristics that educators exhibit in the prison classroom, and explores how those characteristics impact the student population. We conclude by providing a framework by which further research should explore the link …

St. Jerome's Narnia: Transformation And Asceticism In The Desert And Beyond The Wardrobe, John Gavin

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Compares “two exercises in Christian myth-making”—C.S. Lewis’s Narniad and The Life of Paul the Hermit, the earliest work of the ascetic St. Jerome. Both are entertaining, and even whimsical at times, and feature communication with intelligent animals and a restoration of Paradise. Both also feature characters who model the value of asceticism and the solitary contemplative life.
