Walking In American History: How Long Distance Foot Travel Shaped Views Of Nature And Society In Early Modern America, Brian Christopher Hurley May 2016

Walking In American History: How Long Distance Foot Travel Shaped Views Of Nature And Society In Early Modern America, Brian Christopher Hurley

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The industrialization of transportation, first with railroads, and then with automobiles, took Americans away from foot transport, changing how Americans interacted with one another and viewed their surroundings. The dissertation traces the walking trips of five central figures in this era of mechanized transport, the personal impact of their experiences while walking through a land they were accustomed to skimming across, and the ways in which these personal revelations led to changes in the national consciousness. Walking upright was central to the development of homo sapiens as a species, and shaped the way they interacted with their environment. Certain aspects …

Investigating Inner Experience While Reading An Erotic Short Story, Leiszle Rae Lapping-Carr

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

An investigation of the phenomenological aspects of sexual response is needed for a more comprehensive understanding of human sexuality. To obtain high fidelity descriptions of inner experience during a sexually oriented task, the current study used Descriptive Experience Sampling (DES) while seven participants read an erotic short story. Participants were trained in DES by sampling during everyday activities. After training, they were sampled while reading two classic short stories on a web-based program. Participants then sampled their experience while reading an erotic short story using the same web-based program. Some of the participants were willing to discuss their inner experience …

Characteristics Of Jesuit Colleges And Universities In The United States: A Reciprocal Interdependence Analysis, Jeffrey Labelle, Daniel Kendall

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

What common values do diverse Jesuit institutions share? In what ways are Jesuit colleges and universities working to maintain mission, identity, and traditions within the context of 21st-century higher education? To ground their response to these questions, the researchers first review the historical and ecclesial developments that have influenced the mission and identity of Catholic institutions of higher education (IHEs). They discuss the resulting changes in the vision of US Jesuit colleges and universities and trace the impact of the theological shift fostered by Vatican II documents and the Land O’Lakes statement on Catholic colleges and universities in general and …

Predicting Factors Of Generosity, Carlo Barth

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

The purpose of this study was to investigate factors (e.g. religiosity, sex, race, income, marital status, and education level) that best predict generosity. The level of a participant’s religiosity was measured with a questionnaire examining different self-reported factors, such as attendance of religious events, personal devotion, prayer and community life and scored on a self-devised scale. Generosity was operationally and separately defined as the actions of financial giving and volunteering. Also recorded were participants’ reactions to various scenarios, to better understand how helpful they are, as an additional measure of generosity. The scenarios exposed them to situations such as encountering …

Graphic Novels And Critical Literacy Theory: Understanding The Immigrant Experience In American Public Schools, Michael Maloy May 2016

Graphic Novels And Critical Literacy Theory: Understanding The Immigrant Experience In American Public Schools, Michael Maloy

Education Doctoral

The purpose of the study was to bring light to a persistent and growing problem in American public schools. There is a fundamental lack of understanding on the part of school personnel and native-born American students about the unique needs and challenges faced by English language learners (ELLs) and immigrant students in American schools. The study investigated if having students read graphic novels, while using critical literacy theory as an analytical lens, helped non-ELL students foster deeper understanding about the unique challenges facing ELL and immigrant children. This qualitative study employed an inductive analysis of data collected from classroom observations …

Yiddish Diction In Singing, Carrie Suzanne Schuster-Wachsberger May 2016

Yiddish Diction In Singing, Carrie Suzanne Schuster-Wachsberger

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The standard for classical singers in the United States to be trained in the singing diction of the German, Italian, and English languages. This sung diction varies from the spoken diction for those languages and is therefore important for singers to study in classes dedicated to singing language pronunciation. Literature is also available for the instruction in the singing diction of numerous other languages including Latin, Spanish, Czech, Russian, and Hebrew. While there is a vast scope of languages represented by vocal diction guides, there is no available singing diction guide for Yiddish songs, despite the spectrum of classical vocal …

"Introduction

John A. Grim and Mary Evelyn Tucker argue that it is the responsibility for religious people and organizations to combat the environmental crises, including global warming. David C. Barker and David H. Bearce, however, describe the end-times belief that some Christians follow which leads many to disregard the current effects of the ecological crises. I will support the views of Grim and Tucker as well as discuss the current responses toward the ecological crises."

The Art Of Devotion: Style, Culture, And Practice In Mid-Nineteenth-Century Kashmir, Nina Cavazos May 2016

The Art Of Devotion: Style, Culture, And Practice In Mid-Nineteenth-Century Kashmir, Nina Cavazos

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Largely produced in the Kashmir Valley during the mid-nineteenth century, gutkas are pocket-sized anthologies of texts, hymns, and prayers that a Hindu would recite in a sacred place in the home, usually near an altar. In the past, these objects have been relegated to the periphery of art historical discourse due to scholarly discriminations against their unrefined, "folk" characteristics. However, despite the lack of academic interest, a critical study of gutka culture provides the ideal viewpoint from which to explore South Asian art history, cultural history, and historical Hindu practices. Although these objects were often left unsigned by their illiterate …

Religious Coping Mechanisms Among Death Row Inmates, David Lynch May 2016

Religious Coping Mechanisms Among Death Row Inmates, David Lynch

Sociology

During their stay on death row, inmates have an abundance of free time with which they need to fill. Many inmates will turn to religion in order to preoccupy themselves. This research project set out to analyze the nature of religious coping among death row inmates. I propose that an inmate who is actively involved with their religion while coping will be able to cope with the social setting of death row better than an inmate who is falling out with their religion. Following a content analysis of scholarly research from a variety of academic disciplines, this project found that …

In this paper, we will present some Hungarian religious leaders’ opinions and statements based on online resources posted in the Hungarian language.

Hoc Est Corpus Meum: The Eucharist In Twelfth-Century Literature, Lindsey Zachary Panxhi May 2016

Hoc Est Corpus Meum: The Eucharist In Twelfth-Century Literature, Lindsey Zachary Panxhi

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In “Hoc Est Corpus Meum: The Eucharist in Twelfth-Century Literature,” I analyze the appearance of the Eucharist as a sacred motif in secular lais, romances, and chronicles. The Eucharist became one of the most controversial intellectual topics of the High Middle Ages. While medieval historians and religious scholars have long recognized that the twelfth century was a critical period in which many eucharistic doctrines were debated and affirmed, literary scholars have given very little attention to the concurrent emergence of eucharistic themes in twelfth-century literature. This is unfortunate, since the Eucharist emerges as an intriguing motif, appearing in fantastic encounters …

The Leadership Challenge: Preparing And Developing Catholic School Principals, Michael J. Boyle, Alicia Haller, Erika Hunt May 2016

The Leadership Challenge: Preparing And Developing Catholic School Principals, Michael J. Boyle, Alicia Haller, Erika Hunt

Education: School of Education Faculty Publications and Other Works

The increasing emphasis on the myriad of leadership preparation standards have caused university principal preparation programs to necessarily focus on the more secular aspect of leading schools. For the Catholic school principal, this has left little focus on the development of critical strategies to lead for Catholic Identity and faith formation. This article suggests using the National Standards and Benchmarks for Effective Catholic Schools as a framework for Catholic principal preparation programs to address this issues. Additional suggests for program development are also offered.

I got up close with wild sharks, eels, jellyfish, and a variety of tropical fish. I joined the co-ed soccer and disc team. Most importantly, I became friends with amazing people from all over the world.

Mozi: Universal Love And Human Agency, Yuxi (Candice) Wang Apr 2016

Mozi: Universal Love And Human Agency, Yuxi (Candice) Wang

2016 Claremont Colleges Library Undergraduate Research Award

Mozi (c. 480-390 B.C.E.) was a Chinese philosopher from the Warring States period in early Chinese history whose utilitarianism contrasted with Confucian and Daoist thought. Through reading the Mohist text in translation, I examined the relationship between two central principles in Mozi’s philosophy: Heaven’s standard universal love and human action. Mozi builds his arguments in the framework of a sociopolitical hierarchy that incorporates utilitarian analyses of customs, morality, and beliefs in ghosts and spirits. By comparing secondary sources in English and Chinese, reading different translations, and learning from graphical analysis of the text’s key terms’ original Chinese ideographs, I concluded …

Beyond The Process God: A Defense Of The Classical Divine Attributes, Steven J. Young Apr 2016

Beyond The Process God: A Defense Of The Classical Divine Attributes, Steven J. Young

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Because of the work of process philosophers Alfred North Whitehead and Charles Hartshorne, a view of God has emerged as being in a constant state of flux. The power and knowledge of the process God are much more restricted than the power and knowledge of the classical God, but such diminutions supposedly safeguard divine goodness from tyrannical implications. In this paper, I defend the classical divine attributes against process philosophers. More specifically, I argue that God’s omnipotence does not diminish divine goodness and that a deity with such restricted power would not function as a proper object of worship. In …
