Making Room For Roses: The 1911 Relocation Of The Multnomah County Poor Farm, Kira Helene Lesley
Making Room For Roses: The 1911 Relocation Of The Multnomah County Poor Farm, Kira Helene Lesley
Dissertations and Theses
From 1868 to 1911, the Multnomah County Poor Farm off Canyon Road in the Tualatin Hills housed indigent and sick residents of Portland and surrounding areas. In 1911, county officials relocated the Poor Farm from the West Hills flanking Portland to the far eastern portion of the county. Subsequently, the site hosted a municipal golf course and is currently home to the Oregon Zoo and Hoyt Arboretum. With no physical presence left, the original Poor Farm was quickly forgotten, and the reasons for its relocation have been obscured by the passage of time. Occasional references to the farm in newspapers …
The Cost And Value Of Your Education, T. Perry Hildreth
The Cost And Value Of Your Education, T. Perry Hildreth
Journal of Counseling and Psychology
This brief address explores the issue of the dominance of the economical way of valuing education over a more traditional idea of education as moral formation. An education in a Christian liberal arts university uniquely gives priority to the idea that education should shape the student's moral understanding and consequent actions. The address is an invitation to consider how one, professionally and personally, might serve members of a culture shaped largely by the idea that human meaning and purpose are reducible to economic value as merely producers and consumers.

‘Has Anyone Here Seen Amos?’ – Re-Establishing ‘Prophetic Imagination’ At The Centre Of Religious Education And Formation, Peter Mudge, Daniel J. Fleming
eJournal of Catholic Education in Australasia
In 1989 Australian author and illustrator Bob Graham published a children’s book entitled Has anyone here seen William? This article seeks to construct a parallel narrative in relation to the category of the prophet, with a particular focus on the need to engage in prophetic imagination within the twin contexts of religious education (hereafter R.E.) and formation. In doing so it also makes reference to one of the archetypical biblical prophets - Amos. The article’s primary interlocutor is scripture scholar Walter Brueggemann (1982, 2002a, 2002b) who has written on topics as diverse as scripture exegesis and the theology of pain …

Feminism And The Black Church: A Qualitative Analysis Of Feminism Among Black Women In A Southern Baptist Church, Brianne Alexandra Painia
Feminism And The Black Church: A Qualitative Analysis Of Feminism Among Black Women In A Southern Baptist Church, Brianne Alexandra Painia
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Black women’s religious faith has been found to be integral to their survival (Harris-Perry 2011) in a world that many times chooses to marginalize them due to a host of factors, including their race, gender, and expressions of sexuality (Collins 1996; Morgan 2000) meaning that for black women religion is more than a simple denominational label (such as Lutheran, Catholic, or Baptist). Black women’s involvement in the Black Church has been covered from a variety of angles with researchers noting the importance of African American women to the success of many black churches (Evans 2001), the benefits such faith practice …

"Come Unto Me" As A Technical Gospel Term, Noel B. Reynolds
"Come Unto Me" As A Technical Gospel Term, Noel B. Reynolds
Faculty Publications
In this paper I have reconciled the well established six-element gospel of salvation taught by Christ and his prophets throughout the Book of Mormon with the recurring invitation to come unto Christ and be saved. Once we can understand that most statements of the gospel in the Book of Mormon are formulated meristically—that where only a few or even just two of the gospel elements are mentioned explicitly, the full set of six is implied—the door is opened for a more precise account for the invitation to come unto him. In this detailed survey, I have shown that in almost …

Paralinguistic Ramification Of Language Performance In Islamic Ritual, Michael Frishkopf
Paralinguistic Ramification Of Language Performance In Islamic Ritual, Michael Frishkopf
Yale Journal of Music & Religion
Across time and space, Islamic ritual practices maintain certain fixed features while adapting to local environments, thereby developing a branching or ramified structure—though political, economic, ideological, or technological factors may cause certain local forms to globalize as well. Such ramification offers a means of interpreting the past as well as a window into religious meaning and the ritual process itself. How does such adaptation take place, what drives it, what is its social-spiritual meaning and impact, what can such a ramified variety across history and place tell us, and where does the essence of such ritual lie? In this paper …

Warrantless Drone Surveillance: Constitutionally Permissible Or Prohibited?, Brett Raffish
Paideia
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), also known as remotely piloted aerial vehicles (RPAVs) or drones, have been a tool for military reconnaissance and surveillance since the early 1900s. They are one of many emerging technologies that have broken onto the consumer market. In addition to their appeal on the private market, drone technology serves a practical purpose for law enforcement agencies looking to adopt new and innovative methods of conducting aerial surveillance. However, the use of drones for surveillance has raised questions pertaining to compliance and consistency with federal search and seizure law as outlined by precedent and the Fourth Amendment. …

The Contemplative-Prophetic Spirituality Of Thomas Merton: Its Relevance For The Consecrated Life In India, Fabian Jose
The Contemplative-Prophetic Spirituality Of Thomas Merton: Its Relevance For The Consecrated Life In India, Fabian Jose
Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations
Consecrated life in the Catholic Church is a vital and healing presence in Indian society. Religious men and women make an integral contribution to the society through their institutions in the fields of education, spirituality, medical care, social services, and other charitable activities. In the present context of India, however, consecrated men and women can experience challenges of relevance and identity in their vocations. These concerns have their basis in the fundamental need for a renewal of religious life itself in India, one which is imbued with a Christ-centered spirituality and reflects the prophetic charism that marks apostolic religious life. …
