Frontmatter, Quaker Religious Thought, No. 134, Jon R. Kershner

Quaker Religious Thought

Welcome to the Spring issue of Quaker Religious Thought! In November, the Quaker Theological Discussion Group (QTDG) convened in San Diego, CA, along with the American Academy of Religion. Papers from one of the two QTDG sessions, “Quakers Reading Scripture,” are printed in this issue. As the name suggests, the panel reflected on the ways Quakers have read the Bible. Michael Birkel’s article on Margaret Fell shows how early Friends practiced an associative form of reading the Bible that informed the symbols and images so important to their spiritual experiences. Paul Anderson continued the investigation of early Quaker practices by …

“Souls Aren’T Saved Just In Church Buildings”: Defining “Religious Exercise” Under The Religious Land Use And Institutionalized Persons Act, Taylor Luckey Brennan

Duke Law Journal

Throughout its First Amendment jurisprudence, the Supreme Court has acknowledged the difficulty inherent in determining the scope of the multivalent term “religion.” The Court has repeatedly struggled to articulate workable definitions of religion, religious belief, and religious exercise. And the struggle is ongoing. The Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act (“RLUIPA”) protects “religious exercise” in the land-use context. If a claimant can prove that its religious exercise is substantially burdened by a land ordinance or zoning regulation, it may receive an exemption.

Although RLUIPA offers a definition of “religious exercise,” it remains unclear just what types of land uses …

Developing Communities Of Practical Wisdom: An Exercise In The Synthesis Of Memory, Religion And Pragmatism In Religious Studies, Holly Nelson-Becker Feb 2020

Developing Communities Of Practical Wisdom: An Exercise In The Synthesis Of Memory, Religion And Pragmatism In Religious Studies, Holly Nelson-Becker

Social Work: School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Other Works

There is an ancient tension between the values of being and doing, with, at various times, doing garnering the more important position. In truth, both are important and matter. There are reciprocity and rhythm in the cycle of being, learning, doing, and reflection where all dimensions inform the next. Hans Georg Gadamer (1982) wrote similarly that understanding, interpretation, and application were in relationship such that the individual components could not be separated. Religious Studies stands as a discipline at the juncture of both being and doing: awareness and appreciation for diverse cultural, spiritual, and value dimensions. It also poses …

Creating An Ethics Of Love: Encountering Nonduality Through Buddhism And Phenomenology, Dakota Parmley Feb 2020

Creating An Ethics Of Love: Encountering Nonduality Through Buddhism And Phenomenology, Dakota Parmley

University Honors Theses

Sustained ethical action is needed now more than ever, and the attitude that Western phenomenology and Buddhist meditation practices employ in investigating experience is important for creating such action. Through investigation, one can experience a nondual Reality, which in turn can lead to embodied ethical action in light of that experience. By focusing on how there is an “arc of practice” through which one encounters Reality and transforms their action, the importance of investigating experience can be seen. The two investigative practices used in this thesis are helpful for reconnecting the practitioner to their true-nature, which is loving and virtuous, …

Anglican Experiences Of Mary: An English Perspective, Ruth Dowson (Rev.) Feb 2020

Anglican Experiences Of Mary: An English Perspective, Ruth Dowson (Rev.)

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

This paper will explore the different traditions within the Church of England and their relationship with and attitudes towards the Blessed Virgin Mary. An autoethnographic element will narrate the author’s personal journey from charismatic evangelical sceptic, through ordination formation at an Anglo-Catholic monastery in West Yorkshire, to recent lived experiences at a small Italian village church festival.

The range of influences that shape the Church of England’s different traditions are perhaps unique compared to other denominations across the wider Christian faith, as the Anglican Church provides a home where happy-clappy, arm-waving charismatics and conservative bible-carrying evangelicals live alongside incense-brandishing Anglo-Catholics …

Legitimizing Violence: Functional Similarities Of The Religious And The Secular Violence, Tahir Topal Feb 2020

Legitimizing Violence: Functional Similarities Of The Religious And The Secular Violence, Tahir Topal

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

As a consequence of the separation between religion and politics, known as secularism, the discussion about violence has also been divided into two main categories –Religious Violence and Non-Religious Violence– in the modern Western academia. The tendency of the leading scholarly work in the discourse of "religious violence" is that "religion" is inclined to be violent more than secular institutions for several reasons. Therefore, the state's violence, as being secular, steps in to bring peace. And the foundational cause of the theories relies heavily on the essential differences of "religion" and the secular. With counter-arguments, William T. Cavanaugh and Talal …

Mormon Women And Art, Christine Elyse Blythe Feb 2020

Mormon Women And Art, Christine Elyse Blythe

Intermountain West Journal of Religious Studies

Some of the earliest artistic depictions of Latter-day saint women appear in mid to late 19th century satirical illustrations. Mormon women were commonly portrayed as oppressed by their male counterparts and pawns in Brigham Young's sexual and political exploits. As argued by scholars Davis Bitton and Gary L. Bunker in The Mormon Graphic Image, 1834-1914, early anti-Mormon cartoons regularly featured women as battered, destitute, subservient, uncivilized, uneducated, homely, and lascivious. In 1872, these women sought to respond to popular stereotyping by publishing The Woman's Exponent—the first periodical written and published by Mormon women.
