The Necessity Of Divine Hiddenness, Daniel Riggins Apr 2020

The Necessity Of Divine Hiddenness, Daniel Riggins

Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)

Divine silence – or how many perceive it, divine hiddenness – is the source of one of the most important and broadly discussed objections for belief in God. Dr. Michael Rea, philosophy of religion professor at the University of Notre Dame, made the claim that divine silence is one of the most important sources of doubt and spiritual distress not solely for those contemplating belief, but also for those who already believe in the existence of God. For some believers, the silence of God can be reconciled while for others it is only evidence of either a God who lacks …

Religion 102 Magic Archive, Yvonne Patricia Chireau

Digital Humanities Curricular Development

The purpose of this project is for you to learn to use digital humanities tools and methods, to generate new research, and to curate relevant subject materials for a zone of innovation in Religious Studies. For this assignment you will explore the intersections between Magic-Religion categories and identify primary sources on the same; you will sort and catalog selected items; format visual materials for presentation; collect sources and documents, images, videos, audio, and other types of files; provide research on the origins, sources, and use of these materials by practitioners and institutions.

Magic: Theory And Practice (Relg 102) Syllabus, Yvonne Patricia Chireau Apr 2020

Magic: Theory And Practice (Relg 102) Syllabus, Yvonne Patricia Chireau

Digital Humanities Curricular Development

Religion historian Owen Davies defines Magic as “the everyday employment of Religion for reasons other than spiritual enlightenment or salvation.” In this course we examine the history, theory, and meaning of Magic as a category of belief and practice intersecting with religious forms, institutions, and material cultures. Focusing on the arts of American Magic - what we will call Conjure Americana, we will look at the rise of Magic in the early modern era, from its initial formations in post Reformation European popular religion, to its expressions in English Christianity, and in colonial encounters with indigenous religions. This seminar centers …

A Biopsychosocial Interpretation Of The Function Of Religion Evolutionary Perspectives, Jamesian Principles, And Consequential Effects, Austin Avison Apr 2020

A Biopsychosocial Interpretation Of The Function Of Religion Evolutionary Perspectives, Jamesian Principles, And Consequential Effects, Austin Avison

Student Scholars Day Oral Presentations

This article seeks to assess the psychological role in which religion plays within human emotion, behavior, and mental processes. The aims of this research are to provide a psychological oriented basis for interpreting the function of religion within human operation and interaction. First, by incorporating contributions that have been made within the subfield of evolutionary psychology in assessing the evolutionary and adaptive basis in which religious cognition and experience emerged. Further, by addressing the theoretical contributions made within Terror Management Theory in accounting for a psychological function that religion serves. Third, by incorporating the ideas of William James in providing …

Minimum Capacity, Sandra Reed Apr 2020

Minimum Capacity, Sandra Reed

Art & Design Student Research

Students in this project were inspired to create an exhibition for which the exhibition venue would be filled to maximum capacity on the night of the reception in April. However, by the time that the students returned from their trip to NYC, it became clear that the COVID-19 pandemic would make that exhibition impossible. In response, while retaining “maximum capacity” as the motivating prompt, the students pivoted and created new work for this zine rather than for a traditional exhibition. By definition, the zine is small yet the students’ work addresses important topics such as infrastructure, possessions, technology, femininity, stereotypes, …

Convents And Novices In Early Modern English Dramatic Works: In Medias Res, Vanessa L. Rapatz Apr 2020

Convents And Novices In Early Modern English Dramatic Works: In Medias Res, Vanessa L. Rapatz

Late Tudor and Stuart Drama

Convents and Novices in Early Modern English Dramatic Texts: In Medias Res attends to the religious, social, and material changes in England during the century following the Reformation, specifically examining how the English came to terms with the meanings of convents and novices even after they disappeared from the physical and social landscape. In five chapters, it traces convents and novices across a range of dramatic texts that refuse easy generic classification: problem plays such as Shakespeare's Measure for Measure; Marlowe's comic tragedy The Jew of Malta; Margaret Cavendish's closet dramas The Convent of Pleasure and The Religious …

The Catholic Spirit: Music, Media, Miracles And The Brazilian Catholic Charismatic Renewal, Samir Knego Apr 2020

The Catholic Spirit: Music, Media, Miracles And The Brazilian Catholic Charismatic Renewal, Samir Knego

Religious Studies Honors Projects

This project examines the Brazilian Catholic Charismatic Renewal (CCR) and its ambivalent relationship with power. The CCR movement is visible and well-known in Brazil and has connections with Brazilian pop culture, liberation theology groups, and Pentecostalism. Despite this popular presence, it remains excluded from formal avenues of Catholic power like Church meetings and institutional representation. Around 27% of Brazilian Catholics identify as Charismatics, but 56% of Brazilian Catholic churchgoers report occasionally seeing Charismatic practices in church, which speaks to the way that, as I argue, the CCR is bringing about changes in what is considered mainstream or acceptable Catholic expression …

Social Issues In San Francisco: Perspectives From Global Buddhisms, John K. Nelson Apr 2020

Social Issues In San Francisco: Perspectives From Global Buddhisms, John K. Nelson

Theology & Religious Studies

A project of the students in the course "Buddhist Paths in Asia and North America", this wonderfully insightful collection of course papers combines research into San Francisco's urban problems with perspectives from Buddhist Studies.

The class was divided into twelve writing teams who then chose topics from a grid of ideas, firstcome- first-served. If one looks at the topics in this essay coming from Buddhist studies, you'll quickly see they are fairly fundamental and are found in almost any introductory course. What makes them special and relevant to our moment is in their creative application to the social problems and …

The Political Thought Of Irenaeus Of Lyons, Awet Andemicael Apr 2020

The Political Thought Of Irenaeus Of Lyons, Awet Andemicael

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Until relatively recently, Irenaeus of Lyons’ socio-political profile consisted primarily in his reputation as one of the more peaceable of the early Christian theologians. His comments on political topics, and use of political terms and themes, appear throughout both of this extant works, Adversus Haereses and the Epideixis, most notably in Adversus Haereses 5.24.1-3. This dissertation presents some of the key political topics Irenaeus addresses, considered in the context of his overarching theological concerns about the unity of God, the unity of Christ, and the one economy in which the one God has acted to create, liberate, and glorify humanity. …

“I Want To Love Islam, I Really Do, But . . . ”: Islamophilic Classrooms In Islamophobic Times, Nermeen Mouftah

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

This essay reflects on a critical incident that occurred during a seminar discussion about the age of Aishah at the time of her marriage to the prophet Muhammed. I take students’ discomfort with the material and their expression of emotions—especially their desire to love Islam—as an opening to think about the opportunities and challenges of working with students’ emotions in the classroom. I begin by problematizing love (or the want of it) as an Islamophilic response to students’ awareness of the dangers of Islamophobia. I then go on to entertain the possibility of embracing love as a ‘productive’ emotion that …

It's About Time: Open Educational Resources And The Arts, Ian Mcdermott

Publications and Research

The price of textbooks and other learning materials hinder students’ ability to pursue higher education. Open educational resources (OER) provide one answer to this problem. Though well established in STEM disciplines, OER are less common in art history and other arts courses. The College Art Association (CAA) and the Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA) hosted panels on OER at their 2019 annual conferences. This article summarizes those panels and analyzes the speakers’ experiences within the context of OER initiatives in higher education.

The Indigenous As Orthodox: Religious Evolution In Tana Toraja, Charles Perry Lange Apr 2020

The Indigenous As Orthodox: Religious Evolution In Tana Toraja, Charles Perry Lange

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Within the last century, the Toraja regency in South Sulawesi has seen an unprecedented amount of social change. From their beginnings as hierarchical feudalistic culture at the turn of the 20th century to operating one of the largest tourist attractions in Indonesia, their way of life has been turned on its head. Most notably, these changes begin as religious and expand to impact cultural, political and economic life as well. This paper examines those changes from the regions blossoming of the Aluk To Dolo indigenous tradition to the incorporation of Christianity and finally the consolidation and preservation of indigenous beliefs …

Vaccinate Her? I Hardly Know Her!: Understanding Vaccine Hesitancy, Zachary M. Marcum Apr 2020

Vaccinate Her? I Hardly Know Her!: Understanding Vaccine Hesitancy, Zachary M. Marcum

Honors Theses

Vaccines are a first defense against highly communicable diseases such as measles. For vaccines to protect the population, a vast majority must be vaccinated to maintain herd immunity. Vaccine hesitancy is delaying vaccination from the suggested schedule or refusing vaccination outright. The hesitance is commonly portrayed as a lack of knowledge or scientific literacy. But highly educated people are still just as likely to be hesitant. The basis of hesitance is likely ethically similar to that of vaccination. Understanding the methods of the vaccine hesitant will better inform attempts to persuade them. Individuals have an obligation to the community to …

“Our Heaven Begun Below”: A Contemporary Theology Of Eucharistic Sacrifice In The Wesleyan Tradition, Geoffrey C. Moore Apr 2020

“Our Heaven Begun Below”: A Contemporary Theology Of Eucharistic Sacrifice In The Wesleyan Tradition, Geoffrey C. Moore

Religious Studies Theses and Dissertations

In 1984, The United Methodist Church adopted a new eucharistic rite which asserts that Christians “offer ourselves…as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ’s offering for us.” The language of sacrifice employed here is much stronger than that of any of the previous rites used by the Church, or any of its successors, as far back as the first English rite written by Thomas Cranmer. While the Cranmerian rite calls for a sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, the new rite calls for the communicant to offer themselves as a “holy and living sacrifice,” a change which calls for …

Measures Of Ethnicity: Competing Concepts In Search Of Clarity, Daniel R. Jones Apr 2020

Measures Of Ethnicity: Competing Concepts In Search Of Clarity, Daniel R. Jones

Student Publications

Why have many researchers historically relied on combined measures and explanations for the scholarship on ethnic polarization and ethnic fractionalization? In this article, I argue for the adoption of a new research mechanism that differentiates between both variables in order to test them independently vis à vis their relationships to civil war severity. The presence of a more ethnically polarized state seems to make it more difficult for the opposition groups to coordinate and to mount an effective attack/opposition against the government, thus limiting overall casualties. This also increases the difficultly for the government forces to identify the group(s) that …

Development Of The Greek Catholic Church In Independent Ukraine: Persons, Historical Heritage, And New Trends, Mykhailo Kobryn, Olena Lyovkina, Hennadii Khrystokin

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

The article analyzes historical features and tendencies of the development of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (the UGCC) in the period of independence of Ukraine. It considers the prerequisites in which this church has begun its revival in the early 1990s after the official ban on church activity in the Soviet Union. Three stages of the development of the UGCC have been identified which correspond to the times of the various church leaders’ management. The first stage in the development of Greek Catholics corresponds to the time when the community was governed by Ivan-Myroslav Lyubachivsky. The main tasks of that …
