Nephi’S Small Plates: A Rhetorical Analysis, Noel B. Reynolds
Nephi’S Small Plates: A Rhetorical Analysis, Noel B. Reynolds
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
In previous and pending publications I have proposed interpretations of various features of Nephi’s writings. In this paper I undertake a comprehensive discussion of the seven passages in which Nephi and his successor Jacob explain the difference between the large and the small plates and describe the divinely mandated profile for each. While most readers of the Book of Mormon have been satisfied with the simple distinction between the large plates in which the large plates are a comprehensive historical record of the Nephite experience and the small plates are a record of selected spiritual experiences, including revelations and prophecies, …

Mormon-Ish: Negotiating Religious Ambivalence Online, Kristen Tobey
Mormon-Ish: Negotiating Religious Ambivalence Online, Kristen Tobey
2022 Faculty Bibliography
Reporting on responses from a survey of disaffected Mormons who utilize internet resources to manage feelings of distance from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, this article explores the production of religious ambivalence online, arguing that ambivalence is not a default position for those too passive or afraid to leave, nor is it a failure of decisiveness or commitment. Rather, it is a produced religious mode that depends on robust socialization mechanisms to result in a strong sense of personal and collective identity. The online context enables, and indeed requires, an operationalization of religious ambivalence as both a …

A Relational Account Of Structure And Agency Via ‘Lived Ancient Religion’ And The ‘Processing Approach’, With A Case Study Of Circumcision In Ancient Judaism*, Thomas R. Blanton Iv
2022 Faculty Bibliography
Addressing studies of the concepts of structure and agency, in 2008 sociologist François Dépelteau called for a ‘relational approach’ that compared the ‘trans-actions’ of actors, but notably left open the question of how such a study should be conducted. The present article attempts to operationalise Dépelteau’s call, albeit in a manner tailored specifically to meet the needs of researchers in the area of ‘lived ancient religion’. The study of ‘trans-action’ is operationalised here by employing key terms drawn from Staf Hellemans’s ‘processing approach’ to the study of religion, in which agents ‘process’ their environments through selection, modification, assembly, performance, integration, …

What Is Transpersonal Psychology? A Concise Definition Based On 20 Years Of Research, Glenn Hartelius
What Is Transpersonal Psychology? A Concise Definition Based On 20 Years Of Research, Glenn Hartelius
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
Research on definitions of the field of psychology and themes in the literature of the field over a period of 20 years inform this description: Transpersonal psychology is a transformative psychology of the whole person embedded within a diverse, interconnected, and evolving world that pays particular attention to states of consciousness and developmental models reflecting expansion beyond conventional notions of self. Each element of this definition is examined, as well as the four phases of definitional development within the field from its founding in 1968 up to the present.

Islamic Meditation: Mindfulness Apps For Muslims In The Digital Spiritual Marketplace, Megan Adamson Sijapati
Islamic Meditation: Mindfulness Apps For Muslims In The Digital Spiritual Marketplace, Megan Adamson Sijapati
Religious Studies Faculty Publications
This chapter describes and analyzes three digital sites that offer guided meditations curated by and for Muslims: Sakeenah, Sabr, and Halaqah. My analysis offers thick descriptions of these mobile apps, which first appeared in the online “meditation marketplace” in 2020 and 2021, and identifies resonant themes and questions that I believe are fruitful for the study of religion in digital landscapes and for mapping the shifting contours of lived Islam. Today’s industry of online meditation and mindfulness products is highly profitable, as meditation—and, more broadly, “mindfulness”—has in recent decades been embraced and normalized in contemporary, cosmopolitan life as a key …

Scholars map Benin’s (City, kingdom in present-day southern Nigeria) historical contours with its monarchy and royal arts as the subject of rich literature (Paula, G. Ben-Amos 1999, 178; Okpewho, Isidore 1998). Yet, the trajectory to advance Benin’s cultural history and arts is at the expense of the less acknowledged, under-represented, and under-studied aspect of the Benin people who live beyond the capital. This scholarly neglect does not promote the understanding and appreciation of the people’s religious tradition. Fascinatingly, these people constitute and share in the (city) kingdom’s language (dialect), culture, and religion. This qualitative research is interdisciplinary and primarily descriptive, …
Gentiles In The Book Of Mormon, John Hilton Iii, Ryan Sharp, Brad Wilcox, Jaron Hansen
Gentiles In The Book Of Mormon, John Hilton Iii, Ryan Sharp, Brad Wilcox, Jaron Hansen
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
The word Gentiles appears 141 times in the Book of Mormon (the singular Gentile appears only five times.) It appears more frequently than key words such as baptize, resurrection, Zion, and truth. The word Gentiles does not appear with equal frequency throughout the Book of Mormon; in fact, it appears in only five of its fifteen books: 1 Nephi, 2 Nephi, 3 Nephi, Mormon, and Ether. Additionally, Book of Mormon speakers did not say Gentiles evenly. Some speakers said the word much less often than we might expect while others used it much more. Nephi1 used Gentiles the most (43 …

“The Messenger Of Salvation”: The Messenger-Message Christology Of D&C 93:8 And Its Implications For Latter-Day Saint Missionary Work And Temple Worship, Matthew L. Bowen
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Several of the Prophet Joseph Smith’s earliest revelations, beginning with Moroni’s appearance in 1823, quote the prophecy of Malachi 3:1 with the Lord “suddenly com[ing] to his temple” as “messenger of the covenant.” Malachi 3:1 and its quoted iterations in 3 Nephi 24:1; Doctrine and Covenants 36:8; 42:36; 133:2 not only impressed upon Joseph and early Church members the urgency of building a temple to which the Lord could come, but also presented him as the messenger of the Father’s restored covenant. Malachi’s prophecy concords with the restored portion of the “fulness of the record of John” and its “messenger” …

An Elegant Book On Gifts, Gifting, And Remembering, Louis Midgley
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
David Holland, the youngest son of Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, is the John Bartlett Professor of New England Church History at Harvard Divinity School. Consistent with his training and focus, Holland has approached Moroni as an historian. Hence, despite the subtitle to this series about books in the Book of Mormon, Holland has done neither systematic nor dogmatic theology in his contribution.

“Can You Suppose That The Lord Will Spare You?”: Moroni’S Charged Rhetoric In Alma 60:30–32, Matthew L. Bowen
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Under the duress of a lengthy war, and prompted by recent Lamanite military successes, as well as incensed at the government’s failure to resupply Helaman’s armies with provisions and to send men to reinforce the city Nephihah, Moroni sent a second scathing letter to the leaders of the Nephite nation in the Nephite capital city Zarahemla. As other scholars have noted, the name Zarahemla likely denotes “seed of compassion” or “seed of sparing.” In this article, I propose that Moroni’s rhetoric in the letter includes an acerbic word-irony involving the meaning of Zarahemla perhaps achieved in terms of the Hebrew …

Lehi, Joseph, And The Kingdom Of Israel, Richley Crapo
Lehi, Joseph, And The Kingdom Of Israel, Richley Crapo
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
I present evidence of two priesthoods in the Jewish Bible: an Aaronite priesthood, held by Aaron and passed down through his descendants; and a higher Mushite priesthood, held not only by Moses and his descendants but also by other worthy individuals, such as Joshua, an Ephraimite. The Mushite priests were centered in Shiloh, where Joshua settled the Ark of the Covenant, while the Aaronites became dominant in the Jerusalem temple. Like Joshua, the prophet Lehi, a descendant of the northern tribe of Manasseh, held the higher priesthood. His ministry, as recounted in the Book of Mormon, demonstrates four characteristics that …

The Joseph Smith Papers Project Stumbles, John Gee
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Volume 4 of the Revelations and Translations series of the Joseph Smith Papers does not live up to the standards set in previous volumes. While the production values are still top notch, the actual content is substandard. Problems fill the volume, including misplaced photographs and numerous questionable transcriptions beyond the more than two hundred places where the editors admitted they could not read the documents. For this particular volume, producing it incorrectly is arguably worse than not producing it at all.
Overwriting Ether: Moroni’S Transfiguration Of Jaredite Scripture, David J. Larsen
Overwriting Ether: Moroni’S Transfiguration Of Jaredite Scripture, David J. Larsen
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
The Book of Ether is a sometimes-overlooked gem of a text within the Book of Mormon, a history within a history that deserves careful and innovative investigation. Rosalynde Frandsen Welch offers such with a novel perspective in her entry in the Maxwell Institute’s series of “brief theological introductions” to the books within the Book of Mormon. The principal focus of Welch’s analysis is on issues concerning Moroni’s editorial purposes, how he interacts with his source text, and the ethics of his agenda for his abridgment of the Jaredite record. She critiques what she sees as Moroni’s lack of interest in …
Seeking Transcendence: An Argument For The Ritual Use Of Psychedelics Among The Spiritual But Not Religious, Jackson Bove
Seeking Transcendence: An Argument For The Ritual Use Of Psychedelics Among The Spiritual But Not Religious, Jackson Bove
Theses & ETDs
Currently, the movement of “spiritual but not religious” people represents a growing population in the United States. This spiritual but not religious category, primarily characterized by the rejection of institutional religion and desire for firsthand spiritual experiences, overlaps with the concurrent resurgence of psychedelic research and culture. Psychedelics indeed may elicit those spiritually meaningful experiences without the need for hierarchies and churches to mediate them. However, there is a critical need to structure the use of psychedelics. This thesis thus argues to retain the ritual and ceremonial contexts which hallucinogenic drugs have traditionally been used in as we integrate psychedelics …
Confessional Style Of The Ukrainian Language, Kostiantyn Kampen, Svitlana Romanchuk, Daniil Palij
Confessional Style Of The Ukrainian Language, Kostiantyn Kampen, Svitlana Romanchuk, Daniil Palij
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
The scientific work presents the practical possibilities of stylistics in the development of the confessional variety of the Ukrainian language, covering its diachronic and synchronic planes of study. The authors raise the question of the classification of the confessional style, outline its problems, and to demonstrate the patterns of speech that highlight the characteristic features of this stylistic variety. The areas of use, the dynamics of development, the limits of influence, and the popularity of the style are considered; lexico-stylistic units are listed as an illustrative example. The temporal dimension encompassed by the style begins during paganism in the Ukrainian …
Building Zion: Sacred Space, The United Order, And Mormon Successor Groups, Stephen Cameron
Building Zion: Sacred Space, The United Order, And Mormon Successor Groups, Stephen Cameron
CGU Theses & Dissertations
Building Zion, for Mormonism, is a crucial element in both temporal and spiritual matters. Joseph Smith established the foundation upon which the religion would build decades after his death. Three successor groups, each claiming to be the true inheritor of Smith's prophetic mantle, from Brigham Young and the Utah Pioneers to the early Short Creek fundamentalists and lastly, the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, took on the challenge of creating Zion on earth through the creation of sacred spaces and sacred communities. By using Mircea Eliade and Mary Douglas to frame the discussion, this study will …

Ecofeminist Theology In Islam: The Process And Application Of Synthesizing Rosemary Radford Ruether’S Insights, Islamic Feminist Aspirations, And Ecological Concerns, Nayawiyyah U. Muhammad
CGU Theses & Dissertations
The focal point of this dissertation is theoretical and applicatory in scope; it incorporates three distinct areas of scholarship, the ecofeminist theology of Rosemary Radford Ruether, Islamic feminism, and Islamic environmentalism towards the primary goal of making a case for the construction of an ecofeminist theology in Islam. Specifically, I seek to consolidate Islamic feminists and environmental theories and approaches while utilizing and bringing to bear the insights and critiques of Ruether. This is accomplished through a process of synthesis and application. The intersection of environmental destruction and gender disparity is the hallmark claim of ecofeminism and thus, I begin …

Coase And Accommodation: A Reply, Frederick Mark Gedicks
Emory Law Journal
Many years ago, when I was a fresh-faced appointments candidate hoping to teach constitutional law, my dean at USC recommended some reading to ease me into the scholarly flow. One suggestion—which I took—was The Constitution, the Courts, and Human Rights.[1] I never imagined its author would become a mentor, colleague, and friend.
Several years into my first appointment at a law school in the rural South, I received a note from Michael (whom I had not yet met) telling me that, in a recent speech, he’d quoted something I’d published—a small but characteristically generous gesture that meant everything to …
